good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us on this monday. i'm betty nguyen. so right now, we are bracing for impact. a possible historic life-threatening blizzard is set to nail the northeast. watches around warnings are already up. millions will face crippling snow and winds. we do want to start with meteorologist bill karins and really get a look at the timing of this. >> we need to protect lives at this point. we want to make it as easy as possible. we don't want people trapped in their cars on highways like in past situations and we want to make people prepared to be in

their home for up to 60 hours, with no power and that means a very cold house. be prepared for that too. so it's a time to get the flashlights done and all preparations needed to be stuck in your home. 29 million people, it's coastal maine all the way down to coastal new jersey including all the big cities in between providence, hartford new york. up to bangor mainly a tuesday afternoon and all day wednesday event for you. so here's my latest thinking with the snowfall totals. bull's-eye will be somewhere the possibility two to three feet. the worcester hills down to the providence area. i think boston and new york a chance of getting a foot and a half to nearly two feet of snow. portland, maine, same for you. hart ford, 16 to 20. a pretty steep cutoff on the back side of this. the gust potential is very high down to philadelphia. baltimore only looks like three to six for you. philly, eight to 12. now, the storm right now is over the southern and central appalachians. we have light snow out ahead of it so it's snowing in many areas

this morning from pittsburgh. you may see some light snow near new york city this morning. only one to two inches during the daylight hours. not until we get until 8:00 p.m. this is light stuff today. 8:00 p.m. is my cutoff time to be off the highways in southern new england, long island expressway and the jersey turnpike and the garden state. stay there at your destination and a lot of the roads will be closed anyways. as far as midnight this is when the blizzard will begin. midnight tonight to about noon tuesday is when the peak of the storm will be. that's when the most wind damage will be done. that's when the coastal flooding will occur. it's not about until wednesday morning that we'll be finally able to really get outside and start to access how much damage. >> that's a long period of time. >> a lot of people stuck in their houses and the windchills are near zero. you don't want to be outside shoveling tuesday. >> so from tracking this monster storm to preparing for it. a live look at finals square, check it out. this is the calm before the

blizzard. boy, is this going to change. new york city bracing for a paralyzing two feet and more of snow. >> this literally could be one of the top two or three largest storms in the history of this city. a message to all new yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before. >> you heard it right there. okay, so on the roads, 2,100 plows are ready to roll out. the concern the roads can turn treacherous very quickly. city schools they are open today, but after-school activities, they have been cancelled. at grocery stores the lines are very long as you can imagine. al roker tweeted out this picture, new yorkers grabbing up what they can. and in boston grocery store shelves have been cleared out in hours in fact. 18 to 22 inches of snow is forecasted and on the roads the state is ready. more than 4,000 plows and 300,000 tons of salt.

>> and they're talking -- throwing words around like historical, monstrous. so we are preparing for the worst. >> and philadelphia more than a foot of snow could fall. the storm jitters closing schools early. students will be sent home by noon today. and at airports pack some patience because the monster storm is affecting travel. over 3,000 flights cancelled monday and tuesday. some waiving flight change fees. the united nations security council will hold emergency meetings later today concerning both yemen and ukraine. in southeastern ukraine a shelling was caught on camera over the weekend. at least 30 were killed and more than a hundred were injured from rocket fire just like this. the attacks ka ima day after pro russian -- came a day after the pro russian separatists rejected a peace deal. right now, the president is in india. they're making progress on a number of issues, the president said. tracie potts is live in washington for us. good morning to you.

so what's the latest with the president's overseas trip? >> reporter: well, the president has actually talked about yemen and ukraine on this trip. but today that focus is trade. a few moments ago we were listening to administration officials traveling with the president about how they hope to bring the two countries together more closely. this is new video overnight of president and mrs. obama greeted by tens of thousands. at india's republic day parade marking the day india became a democracy. mr. obama is the honored guest on day two of his three-day trip. india's prime minister is rolling out the red carpet. >> what he's saying he wants this relationship to go to the next level. >> our relationship stands at the new level today. >> india's cultural flair was on display last night. >> to our great nations and the friendships between our peoples.

>> reporter: today, mr. obama meets indian lawmakers. there have been discussions about climate change. about terror and trade. the white house brought in american ceos for a round table and business summit later today. >> and the last few years, trade between our two countries has increased by some 60% toward the record $100 billion. we want to trade even more. >> reporter: there were protests ahead of the president's visit, security is tight. 40,000 officers are in place, plus extra security near the border with pakistan. and also this morning, we heard administration officials talking about why they're cutting this trip short. the president's going to make a stop through saudi arabia, not only to pay his respects to king abdullah who died last week but to meet with saudi arabia's new leader. >> thank you for that report. overnight we want to report four lucky people were rescued after crash landing in the waters between the hawaiian islands. the coast toward says their

single engine cessna sent a distress call before running out of fuel. the three adults and a child are now safe. hours earlier another rescue near hawaiian islands. this time it was for a pilot flying one of these. cirrus cr 22. that pilot also ran out of fuel and he's in good condition. then of course we want to tell you about this midair scare for passengers on board three separate commercial flights. first, delta flight traveling from los angeles to orlando was diverted after an unspecified security concern. an airline passenger said that the pilot at one point said there was a bomb threat made on twitter. the fbi is investigating and does confirm that delta received an internet-based threat. then at seattle's airport a sky west and a jetblue flight were both delayed as a result of bomb threats. thankfully all three flights were cleared and continued on their trips. less than a week to the super bowl and over the weekend

welcome back. let's dive into what some of the computer models are telling me is going to happen with this forecast. i'll let you know why i came down with the models. the model is saying that a foot to two feet of snow from the hudson valley to northern new jersey all the way through all

of new england. the bull's-eye being a possibility of two feet there. anywhere from central mass to north. this kind of event is rare, but this is our adonis model. this follows the american models pretty closely. notice it only has four inches in albany and new york. so the bust factor is high for hudson valley, northern jersey and philadelphia. still a big question of how much of that moisture the heavy snow comes inland off the ocean. we know for sure, betty, eastern new england and southern new england and long island is going to get crushed but how far inland does that go? >> thank you very much, bill. we have breaking news overnight. >> there is a device that's been recovered by the secret service at the white house. it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat right now to anybody at the white house. but as the secret service has more information about what they have been able to learn about this, they'll share more information on this. >> all right. so what is he talking about? we have just learned in fact that the secret service is

investigating a device found on the white house grounds. the secret service as you heard is investigating and we will keep on top of that and bring you the latest as soon as we know it. but in the meantime, look at that. yes. keep an eye on that car what you saw right there in the middle. it just barely escapes in time as that billboard came crashing down. this happened in southern california during a heavy wind storm. as you can see, the two other cars were simply crushed. but thankfully no one was hurt. we do want to give a shout-out to miss usa. she came so close to winning the pageant. the crown went to miss colombia. the other finalists were ms. jamaica and the ukraines. well, the state department is frozen out. and which band literally hates governor scott walker. scrambled politics is next.

all right. to a presnowstorm edition of scrambled politics. chris christie takes another step towards a presidential bid. he's created a political action committee called leadership matters for america and this will allow him to raise money for a potential campaign. scott walker might be a fan of the irish punk rock band the drop kick murphys. he used one of their songs as an entrance music during iowa's freedom summit. the band doesn't seem to be a fan of his, tweeting, governor walker, please stop using our

music in any way. we literally hate you. love drop kick murphys. sarah palin was one of the many speakers at the freedom summit and she gave a speech many called confusing. sheaf talked about everything -- she talked about everything from the president to her family energy, the film "american sniper" and so much more. so much so that the new york daily news called it a bizarre, improvised rant. the democratic national committee had a simple response following her speech -- thank you. speaker of the house, john boehner was on "60 minutes" last night. to sit behind the president knowing that 30 million americans are watching you for an hour, do you practice that scowl? >> no. i stare at the back of the president's head and my goal is to make no news. >> the state department is hoping to use "frozen" to teach kids about climate change.

the u.s. special representative to the arctic met with a disney executive to discuss using the characters. disney though declined, telling him that the company likes to quote, tell stories that project optimism and have happy endings. and that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. i'm joined now by msnbc reporter jane tim. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> well the gop hopefuls spent the weekend in iowa. looks like chris christie is one step closer to possibly running in 2016. >> yeah. i mean, christie's pac is a really, really sure sign that he's heading this way. now this pac, there's a limit on donations, about $5,000. that sort of indicates this is less about fund-raising though i'm sure they'll bring in some funds and about nailing down his campaign staff. he'll find his campaign manager and they'll be in roles in this pac for a head of his eventual declaration. >> and there are a lot of speeches, sarah palin was one of them. plenty of others as well. how do they try to differentiate

themselves, these gop hopefuls for 2016? at least we think maybe hopefuls. how do they differentiate themselves from each other? >> so iowa is real deep red territory and this is the unofficial kickoff of this campaign. there's people there trying to prove something. christie was one of those peoples. he comes from a blue state, he's more moderate, he was seen talking about his anti-abortion views in hopes of shouldering up that conservative base he is conservative enough to run as they would say. other people were there trying who are farther to the right of him, trying to shore up the support they have. there were two past caucus winners. the iowa caucus winners, santorum and huckabee. and they're definitely looking at this. >> jeb bush and mitt romney wasn't there. what does that tell you? >> that they're running farther to the left than say of santorum. which is no surprise. mitt romney is expected to run slightly to the right of jeb bush. but both of them were there saying, you know, we're not in it yet. we are not going to be as they

good morning. nice quiet 72 hours ahead for me. thomas roberts did a great job last night. it's monday january 26, welcome to "way too early," the show with perfect timing and a meteorologist filling in for your anchor because paralyzing monstrous, historic some of the words describing this winter storm set to pound the northeast. tomorrow, the region will get crushed with snow. an estimated 29 million people will have to deal with the blizzard now in less than 18 hours and for new york, this has the potential to partialise -- paralyze the city. here's where things stand right now. we're dealing with the storm in about 18 hours from now and the worst will be happening from midnight tonight all the way through
