2:30 am
good morning. nice quiet 72 hours ahead for me. thomas roberts did a great job last night. it's monday january 26, welcome to "way too early," the show with perfect timing and a meteorologist filling in for your anchor because paralyzing monstrous, historic some of the words describing this winter storm set to pound the northeast. tomorrow, the region will get crushed with snow. an estimated 29 million people will have to deal with the blizzard now in less than 18 hours and for new york, this has the potential to partialise -- paralyze the city. here's where things stand right now. we're dealing with the storm in about 18 hours from now and the worst will be happening from midnight tonight all the way through tomorrow morning.
2:31 am
that is kind of the bottom line. i'm going to tell everyone from southern new england, new york city, eastern portions of new jersey and all coast, stay off the roads starting by about 6:00 p.m. today. some of the roads will start getting closed, be prepared for that. bridges, tunnels, they want people off the roads. we don't want people getting stuck and having snowmobiler rescues out in the worst of the storm. we have to think of the elderly and people by themselves. people have to be prepared for 60 hours in their houses snowed in with a possibility of no power and a very cold house. people you worry about, 29 million people under the blizzard warnings. you have to figure at least a couple hundred of women have to be pregnant near full term who are nervous about this situation. unfortunately, like a lot of the major storms we'll have people stuck in their houses dealing with situations like that. so here's the warnings. the actual areas of greatest
2:32 am
concern are the blizzard warnings. that's this area in blue from the tip of maine all the way back down to the jersey shore. this is where we'll see feet of snow and also the likelihood of 70 mile per hour wind gusts and we'll deal with storm surge flooding in cape cod and the power will be knocked out from long island and cape cod and eastern portions of mass. this is my snowfall forecast. i updated this this morning. we had many different opinions obviously with big, huge storm like this. the national weather service in new york city was at one point saying 24 to 36 inches. they have come down a little bit now. and so they're right around the foot and a half to two feet in new york city like i am. i think that worcester area to providence has the best chance of seeing two feet of snow. as we go throughout tuesday morning especially that's where we have the best chance of getting thunder snow. literally thunderstorms. you will hear claps of thunder in the sky. maybe some flashes of lightning. that's when we'll see the
2:33 am
highest snowfall rates out there. late tonight into this time tomorrow. hartford, i have you at 16 to 20. philadelphia to baltimore, the snow really tapers off the further you head back to the east and the south. that's why i have you lower. but there's big bust potential in areas. my confidence in the philadelphia and new york city forecast are the lowest. hartford, boston bangor areas you're locked in your with your forecast. the storm is exiting the appalachians, it will make its way towards the norfolk/virginia beach area. that's when it will begin to explode. there's some had hazards for driving from pittsburgh to the turnpike. across 81, down into west virginia and virginia, some snowy weather. this is light stuff. this is nuisance type one to two to three inches you'll be driving in today. it's not until we get about until 8:00 p.m. tonight. it starts to throw back the moisture. you see it in the blue here. as we go through about midnight this is when the band really sets up.
2:34 am
it will be a huge band. this is when we could get that thunder snow starting from boston to new york. all the way through areas of long island and cape cod. that continues over for 12 hours. snowfall rates two to three inches an hour. you can do the math there. that's why we're talking about two to three feet in some areas. it's not until we get to wednesday morning that the storm ends. and that would be right about 8:00 a.m. that's kind of the timing of the storm and my latest thinking of, you know, be prepared to stay in your houses in this area of the country. probably until maybe thursday morning. wednesday is the day when the crews will be out there trying to get the snow cleared. they'll probably to stay off the roads until thursday a.m. before you can drive around and get to your destinations. more on the storm as we go throughout the day. people are obviously preparing to be inside, grocery stores were packed over the weekend. many shoppers found empty shelves. the national guard to the state police are going over their
2:35 am
present races. >> we usually prepare worst case scenario. and we literally got off a phone call with the national weather service and they're throwing words around like historical, monstrous. so from that perspective, yeah, we are preparing for the worst. >> and of course the storm is also throwing off travel plans across the nation. according to the website flight aware, airlines have cancelled more than 1,800 flights for today. more than 1,600 for tomorrow. that's about 3,000. today amtrak says it plans to operate on the normal schedule. salt trucks and snowplows are ready for the roads but people are warned to stay inside if at all possible. we'll track it on "way too early" and on "morning joe." the breaking news from the weekend and overnight from the white house where officials confirm a suspicious device has been found on the grounds. first responders were seen around the grounds but officials say the device doesn't pose a
2:36 am
serious threat. here's the white house press secretary early this morning. >> there is a device that has been recovered by the secret service at the white house. the early indications are that it does not pose any sort of on going threat right now to anybody at the white house. but as the secret service has more information about their investigation about what they have been able to learn about this, they'll share more information on this. >> well, president obama is in india right now talking trade, nuclear energy and defense. but this is the latest in the series of high profile security concerns. in september of last year, an intruder made it over the fence and tone the white house itself. and someone fired shots at vice president biden's home. following the state of the union address, people are wondering does he have enough political capital to pull it off? the two top men in congress on "60 minutes" answered no. everything in everything from raises taxes on the rich to free
2:37 am
community college. >> increasing the federal minimum wage. >> bad idea. dead. >> it's a bad idea. i have had kind of a rotten job as you can imagine growing up and getting myself through school. i wouldn't have had a chance at half those jobs if the federal government kept imposing higher minimum wage. you take the bottom rungs off the economic ladder. >> now, the president has talked about raising the wage gap between the wealthiest americans and the middle class, and this blame is at his feet. >> is income inquality a problem in this -- inequality in this country a problem? >> it is. and the president's policies have made income inequality worse. all the regulations that are coming out of washington make it a more difficult for employers to hire more people. chief amongst those is obamacare. >> and when it comes to the frosty relationship between the president and congress speaker boehner said tone is everything. >> it sounded like he was
2:38 am
running for a third term. he seemed to have completely forgotten or chose to ignore the election last november. >> we had a meeting at the white house last week. it was all very cordial, all very straightforward. i don't think -- i don't think that's the issue. you know, the president could have at the state of the union just put out an olive branch. could have taken a different tone that would have indicated to us that there's some interest in working with us. i can tell you, we're interested in working with him. >> well this weekend was also the race for the 2016, it began in earnest. chris christie is starting a presidential pac called leadership matters for america. and last night, the top tier senators who might run, marco rubio, rand paul and ted cruz held a forum hosted by the koch brothers. they sparred on foreign policy
2:39 am
and paul asking the two more hawkish senators if they're ready to send ground troops into iran. marco rubio said at this pace in five years we're going to build the bomb for them. over the weekend, two events underscored the rift on immigration within the party. controversial congressman steve king's summit brought out who's who of the contenders. immigration was front and center and protesters were pulled from the audience after they continuously interrupted the event. something needs to be done about the millions of undocumented workers in america, and jeb bush had a divergent message from other potential candidates. >> we need to find a way, a path to legalized status for those that have come here and have languished in the shadows. there's no way they'll be deported. >> in order to get a guest worker permit, you have to apply for it from outside of america. you can't be here, okay? so because you shouldn't get an
2:40 am
advantage for breaking the law. so you leave -- >> moving on of course we have an update on this story. less than a week away from the super bowl xlix and deflategate controversy, still driving the conversation. in an unscheduled press conference saturday, patriots head coach bill belichick said his team deserves no blame for the underinflated balls in the afc championship game. >> i believe now 100% that i have personally and we as an organization have absolutely followed every rule to the letter. at no time was there any intent whatsoever to try to compromise the integrity of the game or to gain an advantage. quite the opposite. we feel like we followed the rules of the game to the letter in our preparations, in our
2:41 am
procedures. all right? and in the way that we handled every game that we competitively played in. as it relates to this matter. >> now, belichick also discussed an internal study that the patriots conducted that showed the atmosphere conditions that contributed to the low pressure of the game balls. >> we found that once the balls -- the footballs were on the field over an extended period of times, in other words they adjusted to the climatic conditions and also the fact that the ball -- the balls you know reached an equilibrium without the rubbing process, after that had, you know run its course and the footballs had reached the equilibrium that they were down approximately 1 1/2 pounds per square inch. the situation -- the preparation of the ball caused the ball to to -- i would say be
2:42 am
artificially high in psi. >> and that was the equivalent of me trying to explain how to stop the hurry-up offense. wow. bill belichick's scientific explanation drew a quick response from bill nye the science guy. >> i'm not too worried about coach belichick competing with me. what he said didn't make any sense. rubbing the football, i don't think you can change the pressure. to really change the pressure you need one of these -- the inflation needle. i cannot help but say, go seahawks! >> next up, "sesame street" will get into it. richard sherman also spoke out sunday calling into question the patriots' integrity and that of the entire investigation. >> the past is what the past is. their present is what the present is. and will they be punished? probably not. not as long as robert kraft and roger goodell are still taking
2:43 am
pictures at their respective homes, you know? i think he was just at kraft's house last week. you talk about conflict of interest. yes, it was ironic i was the villain last year, seeing i didn't break any rules or do anything despicable. i just play the game. but i guess, you know, in a sense it's irony. but, you know, it depends on who you ask. >> i guess it's good to laugh at a controversy, right? still ahead on "way too early," more on the blizzard conditions on the way shortly for the northeast. what you need to know before you head out the door. and later, thomas he did have fun while hosting the miss universe pageant last night. did miss usa come home with the win? i don't know i didn't see the results. those stories when "way too early" comes back. >> i want you to listen to me. i'm going to stay this again. i did not have sexual relations
2:44 am
with that woman, miss lewinsky. i never told anybody to lie. not a single time. never. these allegations are false. and i need to go back to work for the american people. good job! still running in the morning?
