8:03 am
expecting more snow it means because we are expecting worse conditions. where the blizzard warning is in effect, that's where we have strong winds, 35 miles per hour or more. and visibility is less than a quarter mile. that will be for three hours persistent for three hours at a time. likelihood of that. that's the criteria of a blizzard, it doesn't have to do with snowfall. but we are looking at big snowfall. 22 to 26 inches. boston, looks like mass pike could be in that three foot jackpot. 16 to 20 in new york. and philadelphia up to a foot. this is just the beginning of it tamron. >> jane ti m, m is at the department of sanitation. hundreds of trucks are being deployed. thousands of workers getting ready for the storm. bill de blasio mayor of new york city, could not have had stronger language regarding preparedness and warning people not to take this lightly.

8:05 am
longer than any of us would like. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, tamron. the snow pack here is going to last for awhile because these temperatures are not supposed to climb in the next several days they're predicting a light and fluffy snow which will be blowing around. that might mean huge snow drifts they're talking not just 20 to 30 inches of snow but really high winds, up to 60 70 miles per hour approaching hurricane force. the governor in massachusetts, charlie baker, has been urging residents to use today to prepare. the bulk of the storm will start to arrive around the evening commute, after the evening commute. he said that people should be using today to gas up cars and generators, go get extra food prepare for worst case scenario which might be having to stay home in the next several days and possibly without power. they're anticipating possible widespread power outages here because of the nature of high winds and heavy snow totals. now, the city is pausing for a

moment in preparations today a short distance from here on the boston common at city hall plaza. there's a super bowl sendoff going on. many are taking that in before they resume preparations. but they're looking at what's called an unprecedented storm. in the last hour or so logan airport announced that flights will cease at around 7:30 tonight and probably won't resume until sometime wednesday. of course with all of the snow coming around the eastern seaboard, it will cause a lot of travel problems not just in new england but around the country. >> going to be an interesting week everywhere. thank you so much. greatly appreciate it. now to reagan national airport. tom costello has the latest on the nationwide travel impact of the massive storm. >> reporter: hi tamron good day. for the most part it has been a rainy, windy morning. it is likely to change going into the afternoon and evening. the impact on travel as you know
8:07 am
will be profound. already, reporting more than 2,000 flight cancellations just for today, and we're expecting already we have 1945 flights cancelled for tomorrow. so we are talking about 4,000 flights already today and tomorrow and the number likely to increase rather dramatically. flight aware tems me the biggest impacts are in new york city area with newark laguardia, and jfk. boston and philly 20% of flights cancelled today. minimal impact on washington but any flight from here to the northeast is likely to be effected, and that's me. i am supposed to be on a flight. we will see if i get to new york. united already having cancelled at the newark hub, that leaves them with 80% cancelled tomorrow. 80% of united flights cancelled tomorrow out of newark. expect other airlines to follow suit as new york is essentially
8:08 am

8:21 am
not, as long as robert craft and roger goodell are taking pictures at their respective homes. he was just at craft's house last week for the afc championship. >> so the patriots and nfl declined to comment on those remarks. coach bill belichick gave what he hoped was his final statement on the matter he reasserted his team's innocence. >> i am embarrassed to talk about the amount of time that i have put into this relative to the other important challenge in front of us. i'm not a scientist. i'm not an expert in footballs. i'm not an expert in football measurements. i'm just telling you what i know. at no time was there any intent whatsoever to try to compromise the integrity of the game or gain an advantage. >> so this afternoon the patriots head to arizona, ahead of a massive winter storm

8:23 am
to do out of his own personal ideas about what the world is and how it should work he is reflecting as what i would argue a majority opinion about how people view the patriots and how they viewed the relationship between the patriots and the nfl offices. >> so give us perspective here. i would imagine that the nfl commissioner would pal around with all of the owners. do they have does the patriots owner have a unique relationship from your reporting and from your observation with the commissioner? >> yes absolutely and it is so interesting that richard sherman makes these comments. and today to give credit where it is due, gq magazine by coincidence has a huge story, massive story, about the relationship between roger goodell and bob craft. every commissioner in every sport always has loyalists, people who are looking to where the next commissioner will come in from. bob craft stands at the top of the roger goodell loy alycealist list.
8:24 am
he defended roger goodell's eye popping $44 million salary something that the reporting shows. and also that bob craft was part of orchestrating roger goodell's rather disastrous defense last fall after videotape was released of ray rice striking his wife. janay. would be draft was orchestrater of that. they're saying are the patriots going to get punished at all. >> the ray rice incident of course we all hopefully saw the immediate seriousness of that beyond that couple, and national conversation on domestic violence. i have to say regarding deflate gate i saw it as entertaining and criticized by people that follow me i thought it was an snl moment that would be yucked up. when you start to discuss issues of conflicting relationships and things that could compromise i

think it does perhaps take it past what myself and others guiltily saw as a story to keep buzz going for the super bowl. >> i am very serious about the simile i am about to make. capone it was tax evasion. critics of richard nixon may say watergate was small on the list of things he did disagreeable. critics was say what bill clinton did with monica lewinsky was little compared to other things. often it is the little string that's pulled that show wider corruption and cronyism. this might be the string on that sweater. >> richard sherman likely will have more to say tomorrow at media day. and i have to say, i cannot wait to hear what i says. he does not hold back. he is the real deal. thank you very much. appreciate it. a look at the national mall in d.c. as the blizzard moves in. check out some headlines from

as the city prepares. the city could break records. in 2006 record breaking snowfall paralyzed the city. measurements in central park showed 26.9 inches. in 2012 20 inches hit. and few people in the northeast have forgotten last year's mess. didn't fall all at once, but last winter new york saw more than 55 inches of snowfall. today at least eight states in the northeast could see two to four inches fall per hour. maine, massachusetts, connecticut and new jersey among those bracing. cnbc's morgan brennan is in times square. normally a lot of tourists even this time of year dead of winter. it is one of the few places in new york you may see a spattering of people sticking out there. >> reporter: that's right. and i'll tell you, we had a few tourists come up and ask us for the latest updates, folks stranded for the next couple days looking to fly out. in general throughout the new york metro area officials have been preparing for this

potentially historic snowstorm since the start of the weekend. anywhere from 18 to 36 inches expected. wind gusts as high as 65 miles per hour. whiteout conditions expected in certain areas, and for all those reasons connecticut governor daniel malloy recently holding a press conference in stating a travel ban goes in effect for connecticut residents at 9:00 p.m. tonight. new york governor andrew cuomo and new york mayor urging commuters to stay home work at home if possible today. both of those officials will be holding their own press conferences in the next couple hours as well as the new jersey governor chris christie. as for preparations themselves as i mentioned, government agencies have been preparing around the clock since the weekend. hundreds of thousands of tons of road salt thousands of pieces of snow equipment have been mobilized in anticipation of this storm. as for businesses many businesses we have spoken to say they're still open.
8:32 am
they're playing it by ear now. that could always change once the snow comes down if it starts to accelerate and accumulate, but going back to tourists tamron those folks that are stranded here in the city, they can go check out a broadway show. we hear the theaters are remaining open over the next couple days and the theaters are doing exchanges on tickets as well. so giving new meaning to the term the show must go on. >> absolutely. hopefully they brought extra cash. those shows cost. if you planned your budget weekend, you may be spending a lot more to stay stranded in new york. thank you very much morgan greatly appreciate it. in philadelphia forecasters expect bands of snow will create a divided city some people will see more than a foot accumulation. miles away smaller snow totals. let's go to philly and matt delush a from wcau. i lived there for many years. good in handling large snowfall
8:33 am
and hopefully things go well this time around. >> reporter: a lot of people tamron have been going out for salt and shovels to be prepared for the upcoming storm. we have seen a little snow out here this morning. it is lightly falling at the moment. i am going to step out of the way to see what we have been experiencing. we had accumulations upwards of two inches in some areas. but side streets are still a little slick. road crews are working on it for several hours, especially major roads and highways. we are also outside one of the schools in the city. in about a half hour more than 100,000 philadelphia students are about to be dismissed so they can get home and out of this mess. the decision was made last night to close schools early today. philadelphia is not alone. we have early dismissal through the area today. pennsylvania new jersey, and delaware and at last count, over 400 closings to our station in philadelphia just for today. now the concern is what happens tomorrow. a decision has not yet been
8:34 am
announced for philadelphia schools, but folks here are being told to get prepared for the storm to strengthen overnight. we are also expecting to hear from the city of philadelphia they're expecting to hold a news conference within the hour. we are hoping for more information as the snow continues to fall. >> matt thank you so much. to politics now. this morning we are hearing more about possible hillary clinton presidential run, and when she might make the announcement. sarah palin also getting a lot of attention for what huffington post calls a bizarre speech saturday in des moines. bloomberg called that 35 minute speech painful, petty, incoherent. we are hearing chris christie has taken the firmest step toward running for republican nomination. let's get caught up on headlines. nbc news senior political editor mark murray not outside in the snow like the last two reporters. >> thank you. >> and i am inside too. i can't even give you trash talk. the bottom line a lot of trash
8:35 am
talk seems like coming from sarah palin, mark. let me play a snippet of the speech and find out from you what happened. >> sure. >> change for our government look at it. it isn't too big to fail. it is too big to succeed. it is too big to succeed so we can afford no retreads or nothing will change with the same people and same policies that got us into this status quo. another latin word status quo, and it stands for man, the middle class everyday americans are really getting taken for a ride, that's status quo. and gop leaders, by the way, you know the man can only ride you when your back is bent so strengthen it. >> okay. how did it play to the crowd and talk about the headlines.
8:36 am
>> didn't sound different from her speeches at political events the past three or four years when people haven't taken her seriously as a presidential candidate, beginning of the 2012 circuit. what's interesting is you're hearing back lash from conservative writers, byron york of the washington examiner complaining that sarah palin stole the spotlight from a lot of other republicans who were giving serious speeches. case in point, governor scott walker of wisconsin. and the fear is from some republicans with the open presidential seat we don't need to be focused on donald trumps and sarah palins let's focus on republicans that are running for president. >> let's then focus on republicans that seem to be ready to run. chris christie the developments regarding his positioning. >> yeah. our own nbc's kelly o'donnell reporting that chris christie will have a political action committee. this is not a presidential campaign committee, it allows him to raise money for travel hire some aides, it is not
8:37 am
something you could use to run in a presidential contest. but it is one of those steps you take when exploring a presidential bid. it is going to be important to see if christie decides to take additional next steps. tamron that's what we are going to be watching. >> and it has gotten to percentages. for hillary clinton, according to some within her camp it inched up after the holidays. >> every day that goes by is more indication that she's going to run and not run. if she wasn't going to run, she would have told democrats a long time ago, that would have given time for democrats to groom another possible presidential candidate. and tamron politico ended up reporting her time line is around april. that sounds about right. president obama launched his re-election bid in april of 2011. mitt romney launched his in april of 2011 as well. and that time frame allows you to raise about a billion dollars both obama and mitt romney raised in 2012 and seems to be
