is is "way too early"! ♪ something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call ♪ ♪ ghostbusters ♪ >> hey, everybody, good morning! i'm thomas roberts. it's wednesday, january 28th. welcome to "way too early," the show that believes in ufos, esp, clair voice, spirit tlogify, full-test mediums, the loch ness monster and the theory of atlantis. wasn't that good? sasquatch too? i was trying to quote all of janine annie potts, and i think i did good right there from "ghostbusters." the new cast how they're going to improve on the original if it can be done. we'll have that for you. but we begin this morning in new england, where crews are facing bitterly cold conditions as they begin to clean up from a powerful blizzard. the boston area bore the brunt of the storm and is now trying to get back to normal. some towns are now dealing with up to 3 feet of snow on the ground. one of the hardest hit areas, cape cod.

70-plus-mile-per-hour winds knocked out power to more than 30,000 customers, including virtually all of nantucket. phone and internet service, that was lost making communication difficult on the island. and in marshfield the storm slapped a gaping hole in a 40 to 50-foot section of a sea wall here. just look at these pictures. residents are still coming to grips with the devastation from this storm. >> trashed, demolished. >> what happened? >> the ocean just tore it down. my roof caved in. the roof collapsed, the side wall. >> this is the worst storm i've seen. this place is like a war zone right now. >> so the blizzard also packed a strong punch in connecticut and new hampshire with more than 30 inches of snow in certain towns. and it is a difference of night and day in new york. new york city faring much better than expected with less than a foot of snow but suffolk county, that was hit much harder. towns on the east end of long island are also digging out from more than 2 feet of snow. new york governor andrew cuomo says it will cost millions of dollars for long island to recover. he's sending 100 members of the

national guard and snow plows and dump trucks from new york city and upstate to help out there. flights, they are also starting to resume after more than 7,000 flights were canceled. the u.s. travel association estimates this cancellation issue is going to cost the economy $230 million. so there is also plenty of second-guessing this morning about how officials prepared for this storm. new york city, it was a virtual ghost town after bus and train service had to be suspended and a travel ban ordered for all nonemergency vehicles. mayor bill de blasio says he was only given 30 minutes' notice about governor cuomo's decision to shut down the subways and that he found out from an mta official. but the governor's office says the two were in constant communication. now, at the same time, mayor de blasio says he has no second thoughts about the aggressive steps taken for a storm that failed to live up to the hype. >> would you rather be ahead of the action or behind? would you rather be prepared or unprepared? would you rather be safe or unsafe? my job as a leader is to make

decisions, and i will always err on the side of safety and caution. now, we had consistently, not just for the day of yesterday, but for several days reports talking about 2 feet or more of snow. again, that would have instantly put us into one of the top snowstorms in the history of the city. to me it was a no-brainer. we had to take precautions to keep people safe. >> had to take precautions. but the national weather service's top meteorologist in the region is offering a big apology via twitter. in a series of tweets yesterday, he wrote, "this is a big storm further off our northeast. new york city will still see good amounts of snow and for portions of new england, it will be very high-impact, but for much of new jersey and for the philadelphia metropolitan area this is a big forecast miss. my deepest apologies to many key decision-makers and so many members of the general public. you made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right, and we didn't. once again i'm sorry." well wisconsin governor scott walker is forming a committee, the first step to make his

foray, formal into the presidential race. walker has long been on the short list of the possible candidates for the republican field in 2016 winning three elections in four years, including a recall attempt. walker is best known for his work to curtail unions' influence in wisconsin, but many observers see an opening for him in what's likely to be a pretty crowded field. the move to form a committee comes on the heels of hiring high-profile staffers like former rnc political director rick wiley. walker was just inaugurated about three weeks ago and only a few months ago, in the heat of a re-election slugfest, he said he was focused on finishing out his term as governor. >> my plan is if the voters see fit, is to be governor over the next four years. my economic -- >> are you committed to serving a full term? >> that's my plan. that's my plan laid out and very clearly doesn't talk about a year and a half or two years. it talks about where i want the state to be four years from now. so, my plan is if the voters see fit to elect me on november 4th is to be governor for the next four years.

>> now, if mitt romney runs again, he will try to bring some of the authenticity especially as it pertains to his faith some found lacking in his last two campaigns. in a "washington post" piece, philip rucker reports romney has moved into a massive 6,000-square-foot home that he built in utah, where he spoke openly about his work with the mormon church as a lay pastor. romney is reportedly considering making utah home base if he seeks a third run for president and his son said "if he were to run again, i think he would be much more willing to open up and share who he is not by asking others to learn the doctrines of his faith, but by speaking of the values of love and service that it has taught him." president obama is waking up this morning to encouraging news from the latest gallup poll. the tracking poll now has his approval rating at 50%. it is the first time since june of 2013 he's hit that mark in gallup polling and he reached a term-low approval of 38% back in september, two months before democrats lost control of the senate.

armed with an historic majority in the house and control of the senate republicans sought to come out of the gate strong this legislative session, but already there have been a handful of instances where the party is not in lockstep with each other. the latest round, house leaders were forced to delay a vote on a border security bill. the $10 billion bill is bulking up security along the border and met resistance from conservatives who said it didn't do enough to address undocumented workers already living in america. and last week, leaders were forced to yank a bill on abortion after complaints mounted from female lawmakers about the tone it was setting for the session. >> well listen we wanted to get off to a fast start this year, and as a result taking bills that have passed in the past and put other bills together in spite of the fact that the committees in many cases, have not had their organizational meetings. and so yeah there have been a couple of stumbles all in our effort to show the american people that we're here to listen to their priorities. in a closed-door meeting,

the speaker reportedly also indicated he's moving forward on a house resolution to sue over the president's immigration executive action. senior defense officials tell nbc news the army sergeant accused of walking away from his post in afghanistan in 2009 will likely be charged with desertion. sergeant bowe bergdahl will likely face the lesser charge which the uniform code of military justice describes as leaving a post to avoid duty or shirk an important assignment. the charge carries a maximum five-year sentence but sources tell nbc news the army is considering a deal to avoid prosecution and jail time possibly time served for his five years in captivity and the opportunity to leave the army with a less than honorable discharge. so if accepted bergdahl could be demoted and denied back pay and benefits. pentagon and army officials stress a final decision has not yet been made. it has been a week full of online threats against airplanes with at least 16 incidents disrupting air travel just in the last four days alone.

the fbi says a flight from l.a. to chicago landed safely tuesday after receiving an online bomb threat from someone claiming to be from the islamic state. later in the day, more threats were posted on twitter to delta, southwest and american airlines flights. over the weekend, f-16 fighter jets were scrambled to atlanta's airport after bomb threats showed up on twitter. a delta air lines flight en route to florida was grounded in dallas out of security precautions and concerns. and monday threats against southwest airlines flights appeared on twitter. the fbi says it's dealing with these incidents on a case-by-case basis. want to turn our attention now to that small drone that crashed on the white house lawn on monday. and now the explanation for exactly how it wound up there. the government employee who turned himself in told authorities he had been drinking before losing control of the device in bad weather. the man said he was drinking at an apartment just blocks from the white house before testing out his friend's drone. the man then reportedly texted

his friends that he was worried it had gone down on the white house grounds before going to sleep. he didn't realize what had happened until seeing news reports the next morning. he then called his employer and the secret service immediately began to cooperate and spill his guts. the man hasn't been named by secret service or charged with a crime as of yet. the deflategate controversy surrounding the new england patriots may well have its first suspect. nbc sports confirming an earlier report that the nfl is now investigating a patriots locker room attendant and his possible connection to the underinflated balls used in the afc championship game. the report cites unnamed sources and have not been confirmed by nbc news. however, the investigation is reportedly focused on the 90-second bathroom break taken by the attendant before the game. one nfl source is quoted as saying the employee is seen on surveillance tape carrying game balls after they were examined by referees. meanwhile, the press descended on phoenix for super bowl media day. and although there were

rose. the bulls win it 113-111, stunting golden state's home game winning streak at 19. kobe bryant is likely done for the season. the lakers star has opted for surgery today to repair a torn right rotator cup. this could be bryant's third straight season-ending injury. tiger woods, he's making headlines once again. now, remember last week he was photographed with a missing tooth at his girlfriend lindsey vonn's ski race. well, now, tiger was back in front of the cameras yesterday, ahead of the waist management phoenix open, but this time with all of his teeth intact. the golfer sat down with the media and explained how his tooth got knocked out. >> and the dude was one of the video cameras on his shoulder was kneeling right in front of me stood up turned and caught me square in the mouth. so he chipped that one, cracked the other one, and so then you know, i'm trying to keep this thing on so the blood's not all over the place, and luckily, he hit the one that i had the root

even an "a." 22 inches is what we had in portland -- >> uh you can't grade your -- wait a minute. >> i'm going to get to the bottom line. >> okay. >> 22 in portland was the total at the airport there. i was predicting 20 to 24. so, that's great. boston, i was saying 22 to 26. at the airport there, we ended up with 24, so that was the good part of the storm. all of eastern new england, where i thought it would happen it happened. all of the rest, which was a d-minus. philly i said 20812. we only got 2 inches there. the northern jersey forecast lower hudson valley actually wasn't all that bad. we ended up with 10 inches. i was saying 16 to 20 so that's maybe a c-minus. overall, it could have been better, could have been worse. it was a difficult storm. so, and it's finally beginning to end. so, in summary, i guess, i think i'd give myself like a high "c," low "b." >> a 3.0 gpa. 3.0. >> 3.0, that's good. it's lower than that. >> i would have taken that in college.

[ laughter ] >> that's how we ended up where we did. >> correct. >> but as far as this morning goes, we're ending up with a really low windchill values. the cleanup is not fun right now in areas of eastern new england. negative 4 right now in boston and the snow totals as i said the areas that got nailed got really nailed. we had four different states reporting 2 1/2 feet of snow for their max totals. out on long island 30 inches nashua new hampshire, 33. and i have three locations there in massachusetts that all reported 36 inches of snow. and everyone wants to know what's next? a little storm as we go throughout thursday night into friday morning. that's mostly a problem central and northern new england. and then as we go through the next big storm, it's not going to be as bad as the last one, but this one will have impacts. it appears that little, pink stripe starting as early as saturday morning and then going through sunday that one could put down 6 to 12 inches across a big section of the country. >> oh, wow. >> not just a little one like this one did. >> okay bill. thank you very much. we'll check with you on "morning joe" to talk about this. coming up talk about controlling the message.

months ago in manhattan was somehow found during the storm and reunited with its owner. this is fantastic! and a nantucket mom giving birth to a baby boy during the blizzard as the hospital relied on a backup generator. blizzard baby. so, the mormon church has weighed in on antidiscrimination laws in the state of utah. on tuesday, leadership from the church of jesus christ of ladder day saints came out with laws protecting rights of lgbt citizens for employment and housing but also called for fairness for all, including protection for religious freedoms. the church still does not support marriage for gay and lesbian couples, which is now legalized in utah. just when you thought apple couldn't get any bigger the company announced on tuesday it had shattered a previous sales record selling nearly 70 million iphones in the final quarter of 2014. it boosted the company's profits to $18 billion. as for its next big venture, the apple watch, ceo tim cook announcing it would begin shipping coming up in spring
