you can make kids believe they matter you can change the world, because life is not about where you start it's where you end up and where you end up starts with where you believe you can go. thanks for watching, i'm al sharpton. "hardball" starts right now. \s . attack on fort hillary. let's play "hardball." ♪ good evening. i'm cris matthews in washington. all of a sudden it's open season on hillary clinton. the attacks on her are becoming more common. no wonder she's decided to put off her campaign start as the republicans sharpen their assault, she's decided to take more time to sharpen her weapons. last night mitt romney spoke at
4:01 pm
mississippi state university and used the stage to take aim at the likely democratic nominee hillary clinton. he's just the latest gop white house hopeful to target his shots directly at secretary clinton, quote -- how can she provide opportunity for all if she doesn't know where the jobs come from in the first place? he was referring to what she herself said on the campaign trail last fall. >> don't let anybody tell you that, um you know53 it's corporations and businesses that create jobs. you know that old theory trickle down economics. that has been tried, that has failed it has failed rather spectacularly. >> well romney went after that comment and attacked her former record on foreign affairs, calling the administration tim mid, and cluelessly perezed a
4:02 pm
reset button for russia which smiled and then invaded ukraine. the middle east, and much of north africa is also in chaos. ron fournier is senior political columnist, and ann geren is with "the washington post," and amy is a political report with the great "new york times." thank you, we have the heavywaits here tonight. first of all, is this the new macho test like at a carnival you have to bring the hammer down? you have to hit the presumed democratic nominee to show you've got it? >> and it's the easiest thing for the republicans to do, is to go after the presumed nominee. the problem is that's not all they should do. they also have to show they have a governing philosophy and inspirational message. if all they do is attack hillary clinton, she'll be the next president. >> wasn't governor romney familiar with the fact that already we had a reset button, we were trying to open things up with russia, maybe put ago smile
4:03 pm
on it? but at least hillary clinton didn't do what w did. he said i looked into putin's soul and found, what, god? i would be careful of that russian -- that future look at russia if i were a republican. >> i was the one who asked the question where bush said i looked into his soul. as bush way saying it i couldn't hear him. i was looking at putin's eyes like you're not getting out of this country, young man. it was the scariest thing. >> burn saw something different. >> i saw something different. >> the gender comes into this always, you never know -- we've seen debates between a male and female. george bush taking on ferrara and joe biden taking on sarah palin. how will it go? can you make direct shots, bakley saying you're no gip >> hillary clinton is none of those people, right? she's a completely a creature apart. there's no other equivalent of
4:04 pm
that combines all the former things she's been plus her celebrity status, plus her inevitability twice now as a candidate. so attacking her is totally fair but you may not want to use it with words like tim mid and clueless, which have some sexist conostations and happen to be very wrong. >> certainly in the example you used hillary clinton was anything but tim mid on russia during her tenure as secretary of state. she had a pretty clear-eyed view of exactly what was happening there and tried to make it a very transactional relationship. >> i would go for the left on her and say you wanted to go interestr into libya, syria a bit serious there for being haushish. >> and she tried to figure out whether russia could help -- >> they did help. >> they helped on afghanistan frankly. they allowed a land route for
4:05 pm
resupply which was hugely important during the years that the afghanistan war was heating up. she credits them with that but she also now is saying very tough things about putin. just last week in canada she had this odd moment where she mimicked him but your point her point was you can't trust this guy. >> i think one of the most effective things in politics ronald reagan was schooled in it called the attack from the defensive position semi ) your opponent looks like they're coming too strong and you do something like there, go again and you win the election. it seems she must be getting ready i assume for all these arrows, and is going to set up an sdi system your thoughts? >> 100% i would say she's the most effective when on the defense.
4:06 pm
remember the new hampshire primary where obama said she's likable enough. i think that's when voters kind of connect with her and she resonates more. her highest approval ratings ever were during the lewinsky scandal when she looked like a victim. i think that can help her numbers, so republicans have to be careful of that, but i definitely think part of this primary is who can ding hillary clinton the most? just like she made the argument in 2008 she would be better than obama to take on mccain. >> i think two gutsy things she did in a row there, during the whole monica mess she campaigned haired for chuck schumer, established herself as a new york player, and then had the guts to run for senate. >> people like her when she looks like she's down thats for sure. >> i think it's very american generally about the underdog but i mention romneyul4yx is the first 2016 candidate to take on
4:07 pm
hillary. i having filing on hillary for a while, trying to prove she's not beyond reproach and that's their argument. let's watch them. >> when hillary clinton was asked for more security, she turned the ambassador down. i find it a dereliction of duty. her failure to provide our ambassador in his miss with adequate security should preclude hillary clinton from ever holding high office again. >> hillary clinton today apparently says she regrets that four brave americans lost their lives. if she was really sorry, talk is cheap. she needs to stand up and die mand action. >> this week i saw something breathtaking, a former secretary of state who was campaigning in massachusetts where she said that don't let them tell you that businesses create jobs. >> she embodies washington.
4:08 pm
she lives in washington, she worked in washington. you look at everything that people dislike about washington she embodies? >> like hillary clinton, i too have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles around the globe, but unlike her, i have actually accomplished something. >> hillary clinton is certainly used to attacks from a defensive position. here she is back in 2007. >> when you are attacked, you have to deck your opponent. >> ha! deck. go ahead, you respond to that. that is a very evocative verb. >> yeah, and she will clearly be swinging back hard when the time comes. but for now, from her perspective, it makes some sense to stay if not totally out of the fray at least a bit above it because while at the same time republicans are shooting at her, they also will be shooting at one another.
4:09 pm
there's nobody on her side to be shooting that hard, so why not stay quiet? >> amy, back on this thing about the timing. is there a sense of what she has to do as a candidate, get the message sharpened up. get in training in terms of being able to do the back and forth, and how do you put off the campaign? is there a trade-off where you say i could use in sometime in new haven basically getting the show ready, but if i go out there too early, i'm getting in the way of all this republican fighting back and forth. i don't want to distract from 0 b@&h(lc% that. somebody sid, i think it's john braybender, that every day she's not in the numbs is a good day no her. >> gives us less to talk about. >> i know. >> i would say in terms of delaying the announcement because it would make her look political or subject to attacks look at what mitt romney was talking about. she is already being treated
4:10 pm
like she's a candidate, so the wisdom of waiting, she's smart to disappear for a while, fall out of the headlines, but if she waits too long, it just adds to the sense that she's the inevitable anointed nominee -- >> but she is. >> i think that's true. >> i think that image hurt them in 2008. >> how does that hurt if it's true? can she come up with some phony partner, and have hi other her run against her? the hurricane steak fry when she was playing coy -- >> i don't buying that part. >> i heard iowaen saying don't play coy. >> i think the fact that i was kidding with ann in the dress many room. if you delay things, there must be something you're delaying. >> there's no problem with her taking time. >> she's running. >> veers she's running. her problem is not the republicans. the question isn't whether --
4:11 pm
there's two questions to me. can she use the technology to connect intimately with voters, in a way greater than obama did, that shows all americans who -- a real aauthentic, a decent, passionate person. is she be inspirational s not about her, not about clinton, not about washington, and lastly can she convince them that shen,ñ(q would run a government that would begjhsç totally transformational, nimble, transparent, a whole new way of doing things. she's got to run a campaign, and inspire people that she can run government in a way that's not been done before. let the republicans fight for the next year. she has to be the bill clinton of this century. >> i'm waiting to see show he mags to do what people can't ever show who you are in a small group to a larger group. >> that's always been a difficult thing for any
4:12 pm
candidate, but particularly difficult for her, again given all of the things she's been in her life, and the very many experiences that she's had where she feels wronged by going public. >> but don't miss this, it's never been easy to do that because of the new necking to. >> if there's another way to -- when you're with her it's totally different than on tv. with some politicians it's dramatically difficult, and i think sheets the most dramatically different. >> if she could expos that how would she do? >> i think social media might be the trick. maybe she needs you. >> i'm fine where i am. >> i'm sure we'll be talking about this for a while. sarah palin is back on the scene, yes, sir, she's interested in a presidential run. even republicans, a lot of them have grown tired of her act. that's what they think it is. are they embarrassed or afraid of her? i think they're afraid of her being on the debate stage.
