failed championship bids in 2008 and 2012 will about the third time be the charm? maybe for the pats but not for mitt. hi i'm ari mel bur. we'll get into the odds and deflate gate coming up. but first another big rivalry out of massachusetts. mitt romney all but officially pulling his name off the official 2016 roster. it is a while out and anything can happen but he said he has decided to give other people in the party an opportunity to be a nominee. perhaps jeb bush or chris christie or scott walker.
12:01 pm
let's start with senior political reporter perry bacon where this will end with a brand new president. and perry, you've been reporting on this and you said this wasn't a decision that mitt romney made as one that was made for him. >> exactly, ari, the last three weeks, mitt romney reached out to people who helped his campaign last time and thus his supporters did the same thing. and i called the guy who ran his campaign in iowa and i called people in new hampshire and his donors and what i found and something other reporters found as well, there was a lot of mitt romney would be a great president, but -- and it became he ran twice and he lost. and i don't think people will get behind him any more. and if people are telling me and reporters they are communicating that to romney and his family and i know on the phone on wednesday he said one of romney's aides called him and
12:02 pm
laid out the reasons why he should run and he was blunt and said this donor for romney in 2012 said i don't think mitt can win this time and so there was feedback from party the last three weeks. i know romney said today he thought he would win the nomination but the data on the table was that people for romney in '0 # and 2012 endorsing jeb bush and endorsing jeb bush and i would argue it will be hard for him to win the nomination and the party the last three weeks, the republican party had a chance to give him some feedback and their feedback was we want to try somebody else. >> perry bacon reporting from the white house, thank you as always. we'll take it to the table. we've steve corn aki here following the story and the whole gang. including our own abby huntsman. >> i want to start with you, abby on this. because you were on the trail in 2012 and you've been around the romneys and what do you make of
12:03 pm
this. >> and people have been asking me for weeks, is he really doing it and i think it's easy for people in our business to jump the gun quickly to say someone is running and someone is not running and a decision like this for someone running for president is far more complicated than that. i would say i don't think he'll go through with it. because the past year he's been in his cocoon. he spent a year in utah and around his family and donors that want him to run and feel like he is the best to run, that is who he is around. and showing him in the polls to say this is his shot and he is the chosen one. he did make it clear this morning that he does feel that way and he thought everyone would flock to him once he made it clear i'm thinking about a run. that is not what happened. donors and top advisors went
12:04 pm
with jeb and there was bad blood there and there is showing there was bad blood. and steve and i were talking about this. people don't know history behind the bushes and the romneys and he made a little jab to jeb bush this morning saying we need someone younger which hits drktly atdrkt ly -- directly to jeb bush which means it goes to chris christie or scott walker. >> it is specifically between jeb bush and mitt romney. when romney gave a speech on his mormonism, and jeb has had problems with how mitt conducted himself in 2012 and when newt gingrich won and then they go to florida and you are mitt romney and you have to win in florida
12:05 pm
and he said jeb bush i need your help and i need to win your state and what did jeb bush do he sat on his hands. after the 2012 campaign and he lost to barack obama and who comes out and gives a public critique of the romney campaign jeb bush. you think that didn't get heard by mitt romney. and there is a big part of mitt romney that always wanted to be president and did in the want to give up his dream but there is a part of mitt romney that saw jeb bush make these moves and all of the headlines about i'm making the move and mitt romney is saying i'm ahead in the polls and i'm supposed to step aside for this guy, i don't think so. >> and there is these personal and emotional considerations that going into a decision like this and i think as political reporters we can look at this poll and say this person went
12:06 pm
with this strategist and there is a question on whether you and your family want to go through this again. >> now that i'm on the other side of this and being on the media side we focus on the headlines of where are the donors going and where are the polls going. we don't talk about the human toll on a family when you run for office whether running for congress or for president. i think back on the moments when my dad was running and this has to be an emotional day for the romney family and they believe he is the best person for the job and will continue to believe that through the campaign. and because i served as my dad's media surrogate and his daughter and my dad's mentor was george h.w. because my dad was an ambassador to china and i got an e-mail saying he was endorsing
12:07 pm
mitt romney and that was the one that hurt my dad the most. i had the job of telling him. so i look rad the the e-mail and i look -- i looked at the e-mail and looked over at my dad and my heart was crushed. it is such a human moment. and we don't talk about that enough. that is what families go through. you have to see someone like your dad or a family member at the lowest moment. george w. bush said this once. i was president and my dad was president and it is difficult for a family and i think this was the right decision for them and i'm getting emotional talking about this but it is very real and we don't spend enough time talking about the human toll and the sacrifice it takes for people to run for president. >> and it is not just mitt romney but george romney wanted to run for president and had a humiliating run in 1968.
12:08 pm
and as he came off this fairly campaign in 2012 and he ran a good losing campaign. and if he came into this reagan and got crushed, everybody would say he didn't know when to leave and remember the last humiliated campaign and i think that is why people decide not to try again after getting the nomination after 1968. >> the george romney here. >> and this is an interesting story to me. because i have a personal stake. i have a conflict of interest that made me want mitt romney decline to enter the race. last night on all in with hayes we did the fantasy campaign draft and i drew a slate. >> josh has had a rough go of it so far. right now you have ted cruz sarah palin and carly tucker. >> that is a three-person
12:09 pm
ticket. >> does josh barrow's ticket turn around with good old number 25. no it doesn't. with bob corker. >> bob corker one of three bobs serving in the united states senate and can he be the first bob to hold the office of president? he's tennessee senator bob corker. >> you sure know how to pick em. is bob corker aware anybody is talking about the idea that bob corker might run for president? >> so we're looking for someone to be the establishment standard bearer with mitt romney out, with business experience. i have bob corker -- >> and also bob mcdonnel. >> he was my fifth pick-up. >> i think the corker moment has arrived. a big day in american politics. >> i would say this. as a serious point.
12:10 pm
i think mitt romney did spot something here. i spotted a weakness on the right when it comes to jeb bush. and it is interesting if you look at the polls, if you look at bush's popularity among republicans when you break it down into the sub groups when you get to the tea party and the base of the republican party, there is a base of those who don't like him as those who do like him. in the tea party, there was an assault and fight of the obama presidency and it was a purification campaign in the republican party and looking at george w. bush presidency with compassionate conservatism that gave conservatism a bad name and allowed the country to turn to barack obama. we will make sure we never nominate another compassionate conservatism. and so now jeb bush running on the middle of the road and they are saying we tried that with your brother and we're not doing
12:11 pm
that again. and that is something that romney saw. >> and that is all in play and doesn't get to the foreign policy when we are in an environment when we might have a security election and people talked about jeb bush as a security man and he didn't look strong on the national security issues. and a lot more to talk about. steve, thanks for being here today. and coming up you know how "the cycle" rolls. you know how we love our politics and how we love football right, krystal. we'll go out to the stadium and we'll check on tom brady's cold. and ad week. the commercials you have to stay on the couch for. and the oddsmakers calling in from an undisclosed location. it is a super-sized friday.

12:21 pm
that is hindsight but there will be no question about the footballs for this game. >> and keith, the seahawks defense is legendary and they were able to shut down peyton manning last time and how vital is defense in these kind of big games? >> well i think that tom is going to go out and perform. i think where the seattle defense comes in to play is kam chancellor sets the tone thomas is there, richard sherman and i think their defense sets the tone and it depends on how new england offensive players other than tom brady go out and execute. do they get intimidated or take the fight to them. >> nfl commissioner roger goodell spoke today at a press conference about the tough year that the nfl has been happening. let's take a listen. >> many people in america if they went through the year you've had probably would have resigned or been fired, can you envision any set of circumstances which would lead
12:22 pm
