"the new york times," reports that romney will dine tonight with chris christie. scott walker tweeted just moments ago, had a great conversation with mitt romney. he's a great man. thanked him for opening the doors for fresh leadership in america. joining me now is a chuck todd and robert gibbs. chuck, what just happened? >> well i guess one way is the cycle has so moved up the news cycle, that now in 2016 you drop out before you announce. that's how quickly this campaign is moving. no i think what happened today was today was the real start of the republican presidential race. mitt romney is now out. now you see -- now we know what the field looks like. this is going to be sort of jeb

bush in one corner possibly having to deal with a chris christie for the establishment wing. you have scott walker right now looking like the strongest of the potential anti-washington, anti-bush part of the establishment world. then we have to figure out who else is going to end up in this sort of first tier of a rand paul. perhaps it is a huckabee. what kind of traction does a ted cruz get? you have marco rubio and bobby jindal trying to find a place in this. today is the first real day of the republican primary campaign. >> robert i'm just surprised there was any legitimate suggestion that romney would throw his hat in for the third time because it was hard to find a republican who publicly said this was a good idea. romney has a closed door four-hour staff meeting in which advisers relayed a sobering

reality. they supported romney and thought he would be the best president, but did not necessarily think he should run for president for the third time. did you hear of anybody who thought this was a good idea? >> if you looked at a lot of the outward signs, mitt romney's name was always at the top of those lists. granted, some of that has to do with name recognition. there was some outward facing signs that there were probably enough straws to grasp to do this. my sense is what really happened was, as you said behind closed doors, on telephone conversations, mitt romney just simply decided it wasn't there for him to do this time. i have no doubt he wanted to serve again. i have no doubt someone as highly successful as mitt romney is probably vexed he's not been

able to be elected president in trying two times. i think it is understandable how he got to this point. he clearly heard in those conversations a lot of i don't know mixed messages probably of people who wish him well and liked that he ran a good campaign last time but not good enough to be or try to be the nominee this time. >> chuck, what do you make of the timing? we reported in this hour yesterday that dave kochel was being tapped to maybe run that. do you think that is the impetus behind this announcement today? >> this was a time to decide was he going to stay on or get off the pot. i'll leave the more colorful part of that saying for others to imagine because this was a

moment -- this was picking time. this was choosing time for staff. this was choosing time for donors. romney had to make a decision one way or the other, and he had to do it soon rather than later. either way he needed to free up -- there were a lot of people out of loyalty telling governor romney, look, if you're in, i'm with you, but will you please let us know if you're in? the interesting thing about this was this was the mitt romney that wanted to do it. the next six months were going to be the worst six months of his presidential career if he decided to run. you would have had the announcement of some ex-romney person going to another candidate dribbling out every single day. all of the new polling probably would have shown romney's lead eroding day by day simply

because voters like to kick the tires around. now does that mean after the six months staring into the abyss, he couldn't pull a john mccain of '07 and put himself back into this? it's possible. but did he have the stomach to do it? can i get through this horrible six months see where i'm at and then march in and try to get this nomination? i think he decided the gauntlet wasn't worth it. >> i want to bring in a former speech writer to george w. bush david frum. there is parsing of mitt romney's words this afternoon that he was going to run for president the third time. he said i believe that one of our next generation of republican leaders, one who may not be as well known as i am today, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the

democrat nominee. a lot of hints there that romney is hoping for is not an establishment candidate. did you read that as a slight toward jeb bush? >> i think we all read that as the rivalry between the two of them. romney can do a service, which was moving the republican campaign away from this domain of personality, to staking out some issues that have not been heard enough and have not been heard enough from his own campaign although they come from his heart. his new interest in climate change and dealing with that. he became a voice for the kind of republicanism that a lot have us who liked him so much in the past hoped he would speak for in 2012. >> robert, what do you think of that? we know president obama gave a sideways jab to romney's focus

on poverty the other evening and did not think it was the most genuine thing. what do you think of the republican focus lately on the issue of poverty? >> whether it's poverty, whether it's social mobility or education in the middle class, i believe it is a campaign that is going to focus on that middle income spectrum of our society because, quite frankly, we have seen that coming out of the recovery that the top has continued to do really well while wages in the middle of our economy haven't seen an increase in quite frankly, 15 years. that's a problem that predates this president and vexed the end of the clinton presidency and a good part of the bush presidency. i also think one of the decisions mitt romney also made today was to look around and see

a field that is exponentially stronger than in 2012. republicans have an incredibly deep bench. >> it is a set of bleachers, i think, at this point. there is no bench big enough to fit the number of potential candidates. >> it is a small stadium of people that are actually going to run and could conceivably be the nominee. on the democratic side, it is very different. it is a party right now of one person. that also goes to what chuck was saying. this was not necessarily going to be an easy climb. >> chuck, what of the meeting with chris christie this evening? what is the strategy there? >> there's a million ways to look at that one. i think there are some people that are trying to tell me in romney world they hope jeb sees it as a mini jab at him. when you look at the money world

and the money primary, the big money primary, it was jeb versus mitt. christie was getting squeezed out. today is the first lifeline for christie for president he has gotten in quite sometime. he still is a very being underdog in this. hurdles may be too high for him to clear. i think that this is about romney perhaps maybe helping christie a little bit in the financial front. >> david, and scott walker a lot of people have talked about him. do you think this opens up real estate for him? >> it does. it opens up real estate for him and christie in a different way. republicans are going to be looking for a fighter. that's one of the criticisms of mitt romney that he wasn't tough enough. it's going to be a criticism of jeb bush. this is not 2008. 2008 democrats offered a new

face, barack obama, somebody with a very clean record personal life. that is not the case in 2016. this time you have a candidate who has made $100 million. i'm not a democrat but do democrats feel about hillary clinton in 2016 the same way they felt about barack obama in 2008? i don't think so. they don't turn up early to go to her rallies in the way they did for him. she is a scandal rich environment, her finances her personal history. republicans are going to be looking for someone who will fight on those issues. they don't see that in mitt romney. they don't see it in jeb bush. they do see it in chris christie and scott walker. >> chucked to, robert gibbs,

television roger goodell finally addressed the controversy known as deflategate at his press conference. >> we are focusing principally on two questions. why were some footballs used in the game that were not in compliance with the rules? and was this the result of deliberate action? i want to emphasize we have made no judgments on these points. >> as to the question of special treatment for patriots owner robert kraft, a man whose house roger goodell visited the night before the deflategate game goodell was ready to send a message. >> this is my job. this is my responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. i represent 32 teams. all of us want to make sure the rules are being followed and if we have any information where the potential is that those

centers. it was very interesting. he took about 45 minutes worth of questions. what you did not see, optics are very important, typically these news conferences, you have the owners of both teams sitting front row. you would have had robert kraft sitting in the front row with the owner of the seahawks. robert kraft was not there. robert kraft was not at that news conference. that has a lot of folks asking why he was not there. he did not want to speculate about when the investigation might wrap up. he mentioned ted wells head king up the investigation, the same attorney that headed up the investigation of the bullies with the miami dolphins. a lot of folks thought it was going to be taken care of

from the league once this investigation was over that sounded like a warning shot. that >> nate, the other thing that surprised me is the way the players are calling out roger goodell and the nfl. richard sherman said he has a conflict of interest and he's talked about the relationship between craft and goodell. does this seem like out of the ordinary the antagonism that players are displaying towards the commissioner of the nfl? >> yes, it is a little of the ordinary. i think it is really good for the league too to have a guy like richard sherman raise his hands and say, i don't agree with the way you're doing things, commissioner. he said i work for the 32 teams. i work for their brand. i don't want work for the players. the players kind of know roger

goodell is more about public relations and media presence than he is about protecting players on or off the field. >> we talk about how the nfl needs to fix its on the a number of fronts whether it is concussions and domestic violence and this question of transparency, but until the fans actually start saying they want change to happen it feels like no real systemic reform is not going to happen? >> roger goodell led off his press conference talking about whether or not to get rid of the extra point. this is the equivalent of obama leading off the state of the union talking about speed limits or something like that. the nfl has its own inertia. until the fans stop watching

and they're not, until this effects their bottom line they have no reason to actually reform. >> we talked about the issue of concussions affecting flair inging players. 37% of americans would encourage their kids to play a sport other than football. fewer people are encouraging their kids to play another support. i doesn't seem like the concern about concussion has pushed people away from football. >> it's a violent support. guys get into it so they can hit each other. it wasn't made to be safe. i think it is good that the participation is dropping a little bit because not every boy in america is cut out to play football. there were kids who wanted to be on the field because they believe football made them tough, but they had no business being on that field. they were getting smashed on a
