e from detroit lakes, minnesota. let's get to work. >> good evening. i wish i had better news for you. >> we have just learned that former massachusetts governor mitt romney will not run for president in 2016. >> today has been awesome, girl. >> he is not running. >> what will they do to stop causing our pain and start fuming it again? >> i don't want to make it more difficult for someone to emerge who may have a better chance of becoming that president. >> i'm the most conservative guy that ever lived. >> i believe i am on the right side of history. >> it is best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee. >> why do you people keep inviting me back?
2:01 pm
>> i think i would serve well as president. >> we need something fresh, organic, from the bottom up. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. last night on this broadcast i was a little agitated a little fired up. tonight i'm just disappointed. mitt ain't going to be running for president. mitt romney told supporters on a conference call that it just isn't going to happen. >> after putting considerable thought into making another run for president, i've decided it is best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee. i am convinced that we could win the nomination. >> romney was planning to run on a platform focused on helping the middle class and fighting poverty.
2:02 pm
it is almost laughable. it is a far cry from the 2012 campaign and of course the infamous 47% comment and tape we unearthed. romney announced he's not running the day after president obama said this. >> we've got a former presidential candidate on the other side who suddenly is just deeply concerned about poverty. that's great. let's go. come on. let's do something about it. i am glad that their rhetoric, at least, has shifted. let's now make sure that the policies match up with the rhetoric. >> mitt romney knows he could never be a candidate for the middle class because of his history. he can't change who he is. jeb is thrilled that mitt is out of the way. he released a statement today saying this.
2:03 pm
mitt is a real patriot and i join many in hoping his days of serving the nation and our party are not over. there hasn't even been a debate yet. they want to limit the number of those. how about sarah palin speaking for herself? >> what will they do to stop causing our pain and start fueling it again? it is they who point a finger -- they have triple that amount of fingers pointing right back at them. we respect our troops and we let them, our troops, as our investigategate keepers tell jihadists, this is our house. get the hell out. >> please run, sarah, please. please run. it is probably fair to mark her out of the running. mike huckabee will have some serious problems with women voters. >> it is one of those things. we're in a business meeting that
2:04 pm
you might have in the south or midwest in iowa. you would not have people who would just throw the f-bomb and use gratuitous profanity in a professional setting. >> right. >> in new york, not only do the men do it, but the women do it. this is worse than locker room talk. this would be considered totally inappropriate to say these things in front of a woman and for a woman to say this in a professional setting, that's just trashy. >> that comment even outraged huckabee's former colleague over at fox news. >> i do have news for you before i let you go. we are not only swearing. we're drinking. we're smoking. we have premarital sex and boss a bunch of men. >> i don't want to hear that. >> that is just reality, gov. >> then we have governor chris

2:07 pm
total reject. he's a likable guy, a nice guy. where mitt stumbled early on is he's really going to do something about poverty. he really wants to run a campaign focused on the middle class. that's four years late mitt. you can't get that dog to hunt. the bottom line is the republicans know that the middle class will be a big player. they were in the last election and they'll be a big player in 2016. so they got to come up with somebody who is not bane somebody who is not wall street somebody who can relate to the middle class and that's probably going to be a governor somewhere, but it isn't going to be mitt romney. he repeatedly is at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong message. remember those commercials with bob dole?
2:08 pm
after he lost to bill clinton in 1996, he did some commercials. i just can't win. that's where mitt romney is right now. everybody likes mitt but wrong message, wrong candidate, wrong time. i find it interesting in a statement today he was talking about a lot of people are asking me if i'm going to get back into it. it's unlike. you're either in or out. it sounds at least today, that he's out. tonight's question -- are you sad mitt romney isn't running for president? text "a" for yes. text "b" for no. we'll bring you the results later on in the show. let me bring in bob shrum and jonathan alter. great to have you with us. bob, you first.
2:09 pm
what's your read on mitt romney saying no? >> i think if you listen to the tape that he clearly, desperately wanted to run, he tested the waters found out they were very chilly. new poll out in iowa today shows that he is unfavorable going up. i think he had a fundamental problem here. i think people are not only tired of him, but they are just too many mitts. there's the massachusetts moderate. the severely conservative model. he suddenly merged as a tribune of the poor. it is just not believable. he doesn't stand for any big idea, any core set of convictions that would hold a group of loyalist voters to him through thick and thin. >> a new poll has mitt romney at
2:10 pm
21%, huckabee 11%, jeb bush at 10%. did he get a real harsh tongue lashing from somebody? don't do this? >> i think it is in that statement he made earlier today. he could have gotten the nomination, and i think he could have. but you did not hear mitt romney say i could have won the election. the reason is because hillary is just crushing him in head to head matchups the way she is the other republicans. i think he didn't really see a path to victory in november when he took a really hard look at it. and he thought as he mentioned, a younger republican clearly not jeb bush whom he doesn't like with more of a middle-class message that he can offer, because some of these guys are middle class, they might have a better chance
2:11 pm
against the democrat. i think mitt romney is right. this wasn't a good day for democrats because it would have been an answer to their prayers to have mitt go again against hillary clinton. he would have lost again the way he did to obama. this is good news for jeb bush who doesn't have competition from another establishment candidate. and i would argue that it's not so good news for some of the anti-establishment republicans who can no longer look forward to the establishment candidates splitting that wall street finance vote. having said that you know you got to say that there are people in this race there are a dozen of them who have not been getting very much attention who could be very plausible nominees like scott walker who did well at that iowa forum recently. >> yeah. bob, what about jeb bush? he impresses me -- or the
2:12 pm
impression i have of jeb bush as a candidate is he's not going to say something that's going to knock him off the stage. i just played a litany of some sound bytes that are not favorable to republicans. it seems to me that jeb bush has the political moxie, the polish that he can stay out of the big trouble trouble. what's your read on it? >> he is the best republican candidate, at least on paper. we'll have to see how he performs, but i bet he'll do pretty well. i think the establishment is going to coalesce around him. they're not going to go to chris christie. some of them will but most of them won't. new jersey is in a complete fiscal mess. jeb bush favors some sort of immigration reform. he favors the common core standards in education, and he says you shouldn't win the

nomination in a way that prevents you from winning the election, so we're going to have a test of that. we're going to see whether or not he's going to hold to that as he goes through these primaries. when you get into those debates, somebody will say will you agree to support a constitutional amendment to outlaw same sex marriage. some will want to hear that. that really puts you in a very difficult position demographically in the general election. i'm not sure romney's poll lead in that fox news poll would have held when he got into this contest. i think the numbers really raise some doubts about whether he could have competed well in iowa. >> what about the coke brothers? it's no secret they can never
2:14 pm
really warm up to mitt romney. what factor are they going to play into this? >> they're talking about close to $900 million. just think about that number for a second. that we would have one family that would be giving close to a billion dollars to buy the american presidency. this is banana republic stuff. this is not our nation. harry reid and some others try to make the coke brothers a bit of an issue in 2014. it didn't work. i think they should keep at it. you should essentially have the coke brothers on the ballot in 2016. the american public really needs to know that we're talking about a kind of finance coup d'eta
2:15 pm
anomaly. it's very very important that everybody, not just liberal democrats, everybody talk about what it would mean if the coke brothers get to determine this election. you have all these republicans who are sucking up to them left and right. it is a pathetic specktacle. every time they kiss the ring it should be very big news. people should be asking these republicans relentlessly what are you offering these guys in return. they all have big interests. the coke brothers have huge regulatory issues that involve billions of dollars for them so this is an investment by the coke brothers and it needs to be covered that way. >> jonathan bob, gentlemen, thank you so much for the
