and why some companies that don't pay a dime for super bowl ads could be the big winners in another big game tonight. ♪ hey there, everyone. it's high noon here in the east 9:00 a.m. out west. welcome to "weekends with alex witt." another developing story of winter at this hour. a winter storm bringing heavy snow to the midwest right now. the national weather service has issued a blizzard warning for chicago this afternoon. chicago airports are operating on a reduced schedule right now. more than 1,000 flights, though have been canceled. the city of madison, wisconsin, declared a snow emergency that will remain in effect until tuesday. and that storm is making its way toward the east coast. let's bring in our msnbc meteorologist domenica davis. let's talk about what's in store for folks who are in the storm's path. >> yeah, alex this is for 23 states right now under winter alerts. this is a lot of real estate being covered with winter weather over the next 24 hours.
9:02 am
right now the most active weather is through the midwest. we do have a blizzard warning that's in effect for the chicago area. that will be until midnight tonight. those blizzard conditions will get going by about 2:00 in the afternoon. so the heaviest snow is going from chicago over to ft. wayne. we're getting 1 to 2 inches per hour. conditions are really starting to deteriorate. chicago has already picked up about 5 inches of snow. that's going to continue. the winds will pick up. visibility will lower. as we head into the next couple of hours. the rain/snow line set up right through indianapolis. it pushes just south of pittsburgh. so that rain/snow line is going to be very crucial as this storm pushes off to the northeast to see who gets rain and ice and who gets the snow. here's a look at futurecast as we roll this through. through the evening, we're looking at snow still on the back edge of this still through chicago. so they're still looking at blizzard concerns. into detroit, heavy snow. then we start to push in
9:03 am
buffalo, scranton and closer to the new york city area as we get to 7:00 8:00. by tomorrow morning, everybody in new england is in that snow line. what happens in new york is that we're going to be looking at sleet and freezing rain. this could bring up a tenth of an inch of rain for the morning commute and much of the trisay the -- tristate area. for the rest of new england, looks like it will be an all-snow event. once again we are looking at pretty hefty snowfall. so much of tomorrow is going to be a winter weather day. the better part of tomorrow for all of new england right down through the new york area. here's a look at our snowfall forecast. chicago, an additional 8 to 12 inches. detroit, 8 to 12. boston could pick up over a foot. by the way, alex just a note here. if boston does get 10 inches it would be the snowiest seven days on record ever there. new york only looking at 3 to 6. that's because we're right on that rain/snow line. but still some very impressive totals.
9:04 am
albany could be on the overside of a foot there. so that's what we're looking at right now in terms of the snow. >> that is some statistic you report about boston. considering boston and what they get in snow, all right. thank you so much, domenica. let's go now to the final countdown. kickoff for super bowl xlix just about six hours from now. anticipation certainly building as the seattle seahawks and new england patriots square off. odds makers in vegas favor new england, but it's too close to call. for seattle, it's a chance to win back-to-back championships. new england is the last team to do that, which happened back in 2005. fans for both teams rallied yesterday, confident their teams would come out on top. >> i am so excited that the patriots are playing in the super bowl right in our backyard. there's nothing better. i know the patriots are going to win this one and come back with a championship back to foxboroug. >> i'm here to rally the hawks to win. woo, go hawks! >> meanwhile, security is tight as ever. while there's no specific threat, blackhawk helicopters
9:05 am
and f-16 fighter jets will patrol a no-fly zone overhead. on the ground hundreds of officers, s.w.a.t. teams and canines will patrol the area. security also tight for those game balls after the underinflation controversy surrounding new england two weeks ago. they will be approved and inspected today. they will remain in the possession of the chicago bears equipment manager until the game's referee inspects them. that's a couple hours before kickoff. joining me now nbc's craig melvin, who's at the site of the super bowl in glendale arizona. there was some sort of ground stop at phoenix sky harbor international airport with the fog. talk about -- you can see it's kind of a mess. >> yeah i don't know if you can see behind me here but you can barely see university of phoenix stadium because the fog is so dense. caught a lot of folks by surprise quite frankly. that ground stoppage has been lifted a bit. planes are being allowed in and out, but there are some significant delays. we're told those delays are going to be happening for the
9:06 am
next several hours. it's interesting because most of the -- a lot of the planes that come in on game day are private planes, corporate planes. about 85 of those planes are on some sort of delay. so we assume they'll make it here in time for the game. the game of course, starts 6:30 on the east coast. that means 4:30 local time. the gates open in two hours. we already see fans milling about outside. we can hear the p.a. announcer inside the stadium testing the system as well. folks are ready to get it on here in glendale arizona. you mentioned the pats being favored. we should note here alex just a point, they're only favored by a point. that's a narrow margin. in fact it's been roughly 20 25 years since the margin has been so narrow. so we should be in for a fantastic football game, alex witt. >> i should think. i want to add that joe thooiz man told me yesterday he thinks the patriots are going to take it by seven. he said i realize that's not popular conventional wisdom but just saying that's what he said.
9:07 am
anyway before we go security. how obvious is it there? what are some of the restrictions for people attending the game? >> so the restrictions as they have been in years past at the super bowl bags. they encourage folks to not bring bags, period. but if you have to bring a bag in, for instance, it's 4 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches. they want those bags to be clear. they also prohibit fanny packs. they prohibit a lot of things. binocular cases, things like that. obvious things like coolers. they'll be going through everything. they'll be sifting through everything 37 they've everything. they've already started doing that. everything gone into the stadium so far has passed through an x-ray scanner. as we talked about yesterday, there's this drone ban that exists for 60 miles around the stadium. no drone usage. the helicopter that you mentioned, the blackhawk helicopters, typically before the game they're up by now. presumably because the fog is so
9:08 am
thick we haven't seen those up just yet. the roads have been closed around the stadium. that happened, you know, before we even got here this morning. that happened around 4:00 a.m. local time. the roads were closed the parking lots have been closed because, again they want to make sure they search all of the vehicles that enter the perimeter around the stadium. >> okay. well, as long as the fog lifts. looks like it's all ready to go. thank you. >> the fog, by the way, is supposed to lift by noon local time. >> okay. well then we're going to check back in and see if that's the case. thank you, craig. here's a programming note for all of you. nbc's savannah guthrie will get president obama's take on the super bowl this afternoon when they sit down live at the white house. that's at 4:30 eastern during nbc pregame coverage of the big game. we have other news to share now. crews on mt. hood in oregon rescued three climbers who had become stranded after they fell on saturday. one man suffered a broken leg. a woman broke both ankles. they were air lifted to a portland hospital. the third man was able to make it down that mountain with a little help. to albuquerque, new mexico

correspondent bill nealy. a good evening your time. what's the reaction been like today? >> yes hello, alex. the reaction here almost in direct contrast to that in japan. in japan, there was fury, a bleary eyed prime minister saying we will never, never forgive isis for this saying we will defeat terrorism. here, well there is fear over the fate of their captured air force pilot. from the government almost silence. also almost a disjointed approach. the only official word from the government here was a statement on state media saying that isis had rejected all its attempts to secure the release of the japanese hostage, a rather defensive approach. but it also then said while the condemning the killing, it reiterated its willingness to do a deal. the woman that isis wants, who is a jailed failed suicide bomber for jordan's air force

blamed execution in japan's decision to take part in fact war. japan is not taking part in the air strikes or the training of rebels. what has been their involvement in the region? >> absolutely right, alex. japan's war planes are not over the middle east. japan pledged $200 million for humanitarian relief in syria to help in particular syria's children. isis took that as involvement. it demanded $200 million for the lives of the two japanese hostages and then killed them. if you like, what isis has done has almost turned japan more against isis and has got it more deeply involved in a conflict that it sought to distance itself from. so if you like isis has done something that it didn't mean to do. it's turned japan against it. >> okay. bill nealy, thank you very much for that report. we appreciate it. super bowl commercials are

georgia. >> late last night our nbc affiliate wxia reported that a relative had told them that bobbi kristina brown was in a medically induced coma. so far today, however, hospital officials have not confirmed that. so right now her exact condition is unclear. a police investigation is under way to determine how bobby kristina brown ended up face down and unresponsive in a bathtub. detectives don't believe there was any foul play. >> right now we're treating this investigation as a medical call. >> when officers arrived at her home near atlanta satsd, they found brown's husband nick gordon performing cpr. investigators are now trying to find out what happened before that. hours earlier, this selfie had been posted on her instagram account. one of her recent posts on twitter, miss you mommy, so much. her cousin telling nbc news her mother's death anniversary is coming up so it's a very hard time for her. >> bobbi kristina is a troubled

9:20 am
morgansteine morgansteiner, a domestic violence survivor herself and author of her memoir "crazy love." what did you think when you saw that commercial? >> i think we have to be careful here. the nfl deserves polite applause for using this incredibly powerful, chilling ad on the most-watched sporting event of the year. to raise awareness about domestic violence. but we need to remember that this is one 30-second ad in the face of an incredibly entrenched complicated problem that has plagued men and women for centuries. and it's really too early to be celebrating in the end zone if you will. this is just the kickoff in what is -- it's an important kickoff. it's an important watershed moment. but we need to know that it's a very long battle ahead of us to truly eradicate violence against women in our country. >> absolutely. but the nfl is a very powerful voice throughout this country.
9:21 am
certainly on the heels of the ray rice video and that incident. is there something you think that the league could do that would help kick start, as you said, this long journey we have to all walk together? >> well the ad is the most wonderful thing that they could be doing at this moment. it's powerful. it shows how smart you have to be to escape from domestic violence. it shows the incredibly important role that strangers play in helping victims. so that's all really good. but they need to be doing more. they need to be punishing players who commit domestic violence and other forms of family violence and rape all forms of violence against women and children and men too, because men can be victims. >> absolutely. >> they have to take it seriously. >> in fact if you look at domestic violence, somewhat shocking numbers. it counts for a full 20% of all the violent crime in the united states. the centers for disease control finds that one in three women, 35%, have experienced rape or other physical violence and stalking by an intimate partner.
9:22 am
>> and you know what that means. it guarantees that whoever you're watching the super bowl with, one of the people in that room is either a victim or a past victim or an abuse perpetrator. it's so very common. that's the best thing about this ad that it's going to get people talking about domestic violence and other forms of violence against women and get us realizing how very common it is, not just in the nfl, not just in the bast yen of male dominance in our world but domestic violence against women is truly everywhere. >> you now speak publicly about domestic violence, leslie. you wrote about your relationship with your former husband, who threatened and physically beat you. as a matter of fact i'm reading -- i read through your op-ed. he held a gun to my head, i loved him. was incredibly powerful to read. why it was so hard for you to make that decision to leave, though? you list so many reasons.
9:23 am
>> well, you know, like so many domestic violence victims, i was caught in a psychological trap that i thought was love. and i would have told you that i was not a battered woman. i was a strong, smart, independent woman in love with a troubled man who i wanted to protect and help. and it took a long time for my denial to break down and it took a couple friends who i trusted and confided in. and it also took a lot of strangers. i had a lock smith who changed my locks. i had two police officers who i never saw again whose names i don't know who really saved my life. so it took a community effort in addition to my own desire to help myself to break free from crazy love from something that i thought was true love but really was somebody who had been abused as a kid. i don't know if he necessarily wanted to be torturing me and holding guns to my head. he was a victim too. it was his responsibility to stop it. and it was my responsibility to ask for help. it was our society's
9:24 am
responsibility to step in and help me. and thank god in my case it all worked out and everybody did help me and i got out. and that's one reason why i speak out today. i'm alive and i'm not ashamed of what happened to me. and i can speak out. >> yeah and you list all these things. i realize you were in somewhat of a luckier position if you will because you didn't have children. so for women who have children what do you say to them? because it complicates things so much. >> it complicates things so much. it takes the average victim seven attempts before she's actually able to leave. a lot of that is because we need to protect our children our families our pets. and we need to breakthrough our own denial. so if you have children obviously the most important thing is to protect your safety and their safety. and don't be ashamed or embarrassed if it takes you a very long time to pick your moment to leave. and thank god it's a different world today where most people understand that violence against women and children is wrong. and most police officers are
9:25 am
willing to intervene. it was no so long ago they treated it as a private family matter that happened behind closed doors. and it's not that way anymore. you can ask for help and have confidence that you're going to get it. but still, you need to be very strong. i would say to any victim the most important thing is don't be ashamed of loving somebody who turned out to be an abuser. it's not your fault. and it's just your responsibility to stay safe and pick the safest moment possible to leave. >> very sage words and advice. leslie, thank you very much for sharing your story. >> thank you so much. the blizzard of 2015 take two. this is the scene right now in chicago, where the latest winter storm is in full force. we'll take you to the windy city. and now snowy city, next. many people clean their dentures with toothpaste or plain water. and even though their dentures look clean, in reality they're not. if a denture were to be put under a microscope we can see all the bacteria that still exists on the denture and that bacteria multiplies very rapidly. that's why dentists recommend

9:45 am
what's good about this year is that we are seeing a variety of potentially more talented stronger people who are competing in the republican field. so i think, you know, don't -- let's look at senator marco rubio. he did very well in california. obviously governor jeb bush is building a strong team. and governor scott walker. i think what we're dealing with is there could be a lot of different candidates popping their heads up from now until next year. >> jimmy, you heard what he said about how he would contrast himself with hillary clinton should she run. could that be a good sell? >> i'm going to say something that the democrats aren't going to like at all. that is that after six years of president obama, who i voted for twice, supported, and liked very very much i think that many people out in it the real world, ie not the beltway, are looking for someone with a heck of a lot of experience. and if you look at someone like hillary clinton, then you have that experience a two-term senator, secretary of state, former first lady of the united
9:46 am
states, former first lady of arkansas et cetera. it's not like she's a lightweight on policy or politics for that matter. so i think most people would like -- and going into a strengthening economy, i think what you're going to find is most people out in america want someone with a steady hand that knows how to run things. that's hillary clinton. that is not scott walker. he's run one state. that's certainly true. by the way, his numbers are not that great sitting in wisconsin right now. but if he's going to go after her on age, that is going to turn off women all across the country. and that is a very precarious thing for republicans. they cannot under any circumstances talk about how she's a throwback to the past because that brings in age. when you bring up a woman's age, you lose women voters. >> oh yeah. very true actually. mercedes, i want to look at the numbers again. there's one thing that stood out to me. that's where jeb bush stands. really a lack thereof. only getting like 8% of the support right now. the conventional wisdom -- after

commanding lead over her potential opponents. and jimmy, we saw reports this week she namay not announce her run until july. is that a good strategy, or does he run the risk of being the inevitable candidate and having others potentially shape her message until she gets in there? >> well there are two schools of thought on this. the first is if she wait, she doesn't have to spend the money, et cetera, et cetera. that's all very true. i tend to think -- i'd prefer her to go ahead and announce. a, it's not like they aren't going to go beat up on her to begin with. secondly, more importantly, let her begin that fundraising. let her go do that. thirdly, and most importantly, we need hillary clinton out in the hinterlands in america, in it the real world, having conversations. asking voters for their vote. asking democrats it and independents and, yes, even some republicans, if they'll vote for her and why they should. the sooner she gets out there and becomes very human to a lot of people i think that will go a long way in putting her back

sarah palin didn't realize that the national cameras were on basically. it was like she was having this very casual conversation. they would call it rambling conversation with the iowans. but with that being said the conservative media, like byron york, and others have come out and said what was he talking about? the mere fact is the day before that, she said she was seriously interested in running for president. if you're seriously interested in running for president, you can't just go on stage in iowa and give this very rambling informal speech where there's no substance to it no solutions to it. i mean i think sarah palin plays a role in the party, clearly. she knows how to energize the base. but if you want to be taken seriously as a political figure you've got to provide a good -- beyond a good speech. you have to ensure that you're able to talk about issues in a very substantive way, which again, i think she failed to do that in the speech. >> well listen you both always provide great answers. that's why we're going to have you back again soon mercedes and jimmy. thank you.
