ader. wisconsin governor scott walker tops the gop field in the all-important state of iowa. can he edge out jeb for the nomination? this is "way too early." we are live from phoenix. ♪ i've got the eye of the tiger dancing through the fire because i am a -- >> i'm thomas roberts live in phoenix after somewhat of an all-nighter. it is monday february 2nd. welcome to "way too early" and happy groundhog day to all of you out there. we want to get to the very latest about what happened last night. last night's big game and the key moments because it was drama filled up until the very end so we'll pick it up at the end of the second quarter, seattle trailing by a touchdown. the seahawks cap a drive that begin with only 30 seconds left to play in the half. with an 11-yard touchdown right there pass from russell wilson to chris matthews tying it up at 14. chris matthews would be trending

later, not our msnbc chris matthews but seattle receives it to start the second half and jump out to a ten-point lead after a field goal. but the patriots they surge back in the fourth, first with a four-yard touchdown pass from tom brady to danny amendola then again with this three-yard td interception by julian edelman, 28-24 and with just two minutes to play it's enough time for the seahawks to mount a game-winning drive. >> russell in the pocket. russell for kearse and broken up again. is it -- but somehow? did he wind up with the football? >> this was absolutely amazing the pass looks like it's broken up. the ball never hits the ground as the receiver hauls in the pass while on his back.

one play later seattle with a chance to put this one away on second and goal from the 1 yard line. >> second and goal. sets up on the left. play clock at 5. pass is intercepted at the goal line by malcolm butler. unreal! >> yeah that's the name you haven't heard before the rookie malcolm butler with this patriots interception. seattle decides to go with that pass instead of handing it off to lynch. that's what they've done the whole season and that's what they were doing all night long and marshawn lynch. it is costly. this interception turns possession and game over to the patriots. new england runs out what's left on the clock but not before a fight breaks out on the field. seattle not ready to accept defeat but can't escape the inevitable and new england patriots are the super bowl xlix championship champions. tom brady the super bowl mvp.

delivered more to the viewers. i mean she arrived on a robotic lion and changed three times. it was absolutely incredible. and it was a tale of the two chris matthews during the super bowl. we've got the seahawks receiver chris matthews was an unlikely star in the big game the 25-year-old had four passes for than 100 yards including a touchdown that tied the game in the second quarter and virtually gave up on the nfl after being cut by the browns and worked as a security guard at a foot locker. the broadcasters couldn't help but joke people looking him up online were more likely to find another chris matthews. >> you know we were talking about chris matthews the offensive coordinator nicknamed him hardball for chris matthews of msnbc who is here at the game today and, chris, this chris matthews the seahawks said

every time i wikipedia myself it comes up the other chris matthews. >> matthews made that play right before the half. six seconds to go who do you throw it to you, of course a guy that doesn't have a catch all year and then down the field against arrington, up maybe a little pushoff, gets away with it. he has been the difference in the game. >> "hardball's" chris matthews. we kept hearing that. the real chris matthews, the elder one also joined in on the fun sending a congratulatory tweet after the first half and msnbc tweeted out this photo of our chris matthews saying this is the best super bowl i have ever had. but we would hear that chris matthews, chris matthews as we were in the stands there and be confused why are they talking about chris matthews and so we've got the chris matthews during the super bowl. we have seahawks receiver chris matthews and being this unlikely

star that was completely great, the 25-year-old had four passes for more than 100 yards which was just absolutely amazing to see but it was confusing when we were in the stadium to hear that name over and over again. we had nbc's savannah guthrie having the honor of conducting this year's presuper bowl interview with the commander in chief and the conversation ranged from deflate-gate to the white house home brew before turing to more serious topics like the president's demeanor at this year's state of the union address. >> nobody was doing an end zone dance. what we were talking about was the success america had in digging itself out after a tough recession, a celebration of the american people. my job is to present the right ideas and if the republicans think they've got a better idea they should present them but my job is not to trim my sales and not tell the american people what we should be doing. pretending somehow that you know we don't need better roads or we don't need more affordable

college, you know one of the things i've learned over the last six years is that when i tell the american people very clearly what direction i think the country should go in sometimes people change their minds and even republicans occasionally start agreeing with me although sometimes a little later than i would like. >> all right so we turn our attention to overseas and japan is vowing to hold militants accountable for beheading a japanese journalist held hostage. there is outrage in the country after isis released a video following the murder of kenji goto. a father of two and respected war reporter. japan's prime minister says his country will make the terrorists pay the price for this killing. in an interview with nbc's savannah guthrie president obama says he has been shaken after watching videos of isis murders and this comes as his former defense secretary robert gates warns there is a long way to go before isis is defeated. >> is it fair so say we're not

winning this battle against isis? >> i think that's correct. i think we've made some steps, some successful steps to contain it but we're a long way in my view from being in a position to roll them back or push them out of iraq. i think that the president has set an ambitious and i think under current circumstances un unrealistic goal when he talks about our intent being to destroy isis with the means that he has approved so far, i think that's an unattainable objective. >> and wisconsin governor and possible 2016 contender scott walker calling for a tougher response. >> i think everywhere we have have to look at other methods and ultimately be prepared to put boots on the ground if that is what it takes. >> in syria. u.s. boots on the ground in syria. >> i don't think that's an -- >> you wouldn't rule it out.

>> i wouldn't rule anything out. when you have the lives of americans at stake and our freedom loving allies in the world we have to be prepared to do things that don't allow those measure, those abuses to come to hour our shore. >>s scott walker standing atop a new poll in the iowa caucus and what happens in 2016. this new poll and "the des moines register" taken before romney walked out with 15%. rand paul romney mike huckabee and ben carson round out the top five. when the poll re-adjusted with romney voters walker still leads. huckabee gains the most with romney's exit while jeb bush gains one point to crack the top five. bush 46% favorable rating with 43% saying they have an unfavorable view of the former governor. walker has a 60% favorable rating and he sounded cough depth in his sunday interview

about it. >> 99% chance you'll run? >> oh i don't know that i'd take the odds. i just tell you one thing, with three elections that hasn't gone republican since 1984 for president i wouldn't bet against me on anything. >> on the democratic side hillary clinton has a commanding lead with 56% of iowa democrats naming her as their first choice elizabeth warren second followed by joe biden. we turn our attention to business news on this super bowl monday when many americans are a little tired waking up after a big night of football and parties but here's a little advice. don't call out sick or show up late. cnbc's steve sedgwick joins us live and has some of the numbers about tardiness and attendance in america including for the morning after the big game. steve, what can you tell us? i mean i know what it's like to pull an all-nighter because here i am. i highly suggest it. >> exactly. if you can do it everyone can do it but unfortunately there

are 4.4 million americans who decide to come in a little late. 1.5 million americans are supposed to be at work don't come in at all. these numbers are poor but the survey is over a longer time period. one in four people are late once a month. 14% of people are late once a week for work but those numbers going back to a 2008 study, 4.4 million of your compatriots turn up late after super bowl monday and the katy perry extravaganza and the small matter of the football game, as well. in terms of what they can expect when they get to work flat at the start of trading on the u.s. markets after a poor performance in the month of january, dow and s&p both down over 3%. but in terms of what data we can expect, personal income and spending figure january isim manufacturing index and big numbers out from exxon, as well. >> fill us in about this air bag recall news. it's going to affect people roughly 2 million different

cars right? >> yeah 2.1 million cars not the takata one where people were concerned about the deaths involved in some accidents. this is basically toyota chrysler and honda, 2.1 million vehicles. they said there is a concern, defective chip in air bag systems and the fix involves replacing the entire air bag module. these cars have had recalls before but the authorities are saying those recalls have still had not enough effect. the 39 vehicles fixed under those had experienced inadvertent air bag deployments as well. no known deaths from these instances but 2.1 million vehicles toyota chrysler and honda vehicles as well. concern for minor injuries rather than anything more serious. >> steve, thank you. still ahead on "way too early" -- the record set by the movie "american sniper" and what first lady michelle obama has to say about this film. plus a treacherous commute for many on the east coast this

welcome back. so what would a super bowl recap be without looking at some of the most memorable ads. lots are saying this budweiser ad is their favorite. they brought back the clydesdale horses to rescue a lost puppy, save him from a wolf. the touching ad shows them helping the dog return home and also reuniting him with his happy owner. there was a noticeable trend

away from comedic ads to focus on more serious messages. this from wallace and it looked to change how the term like a girl is used as an insult after puberty. >> show me what it looks like to run like a girl. throw like a girl. fight like a girl. what does it mean to you when i say run like a girl? >> it means run fast as you can. >> all right, but perhaps the most talked about ad is this one from nationwide about children who die from accidents. >> i'll never learn to ride a bike or get cooties. i'll never learn to fly or travel the world with my best

bill karins. a lot are waking up to rotten commutes because of this winter system that moved through. bill good morning. >> good morning to you. i know there's millions of students at home today with a day off and a lot of parents scrambling to get care for their kids. we have about 69 million people still under winter storm warn warnings from all the way back towards indiana all the way up through maine. now, chicago picked up a foot and a half of snow and it's still lightly snowing. detroit, 14 inches most snow they've had in one single day in 40 years so historic storm for chicago, detroit, toledo now putting down a heavy layer over much of new york state through ken nut, massachusetts, the mix line is right near new york city. raining in brooklyn and in northern portions of manhattan it's sleet and then in westchester, heavy snow so that's the transition zone and worried about icing later today especially the southern portions of connecticut but you see the temperature in new york city at 33 so we're okay there. going over to rain probably

during much of the morning. if you're in the hudson valley trying to get around on 95 or 84, it's just a nightmare of a drive right now. totals would be somewhere close to a foot to a foot and a half anywhere from buffalo to syracuse, albany manchester to boston. south of boston you'll mix in so probably get a quick 6 to 10. maine failed by this too and that's the area that picked up the two to three feet. so here's how the timing goes. by about noon the storm is primaryily ending in new jersey starting to end in the valley. it's only up in new england by 5 p.m. and the thing that's interesting, right behind it immediately the temperatures are going to crash. i can't emphasize it enough for people in new jersey southern new york that get that icy mix, get out there, and get rid that have slop and the ice because thomas, by 11 p.m. temperatures will drop into the teens and so everything is going to turn into a rock.

welcome back. some very sad news to report. an update on the daughter of whitney houston who does remain hospitalized after being found in her home's bathtub face down and unresponsive yesterday. bobbi kristina brown's father who is the singer bobby brown issued a statement asking for privacy while the 21-year-old is treated in atlanta. hospital officials have not given details on her condition. e! news is citing an anonymous source reporting she is on a respirator. it was february of 2012 when bobbi kristina's mom, whitney houston was found dead in a bathtub at the beverly hills hotel. then we have this the movie "american sniper" has made box office history taking in nearly $32 million this weekend. the film topped the record for a

movie's earnings over super bowl weekend so the best picture nominee starring actor bradley cooper has taken in $249 million, first lady michelle obama in a friday event with screenwriters acknowledged there has been criticism of the film but said that the movie, quote, touches on the many of the emotions and experiences that i've heard firsthand from military families. everyone that i've seenheard said it was a must see. the day after, "morning joe" is moments away. stick around.
