"saved by the bell" get up, i'm thomas roberts. it's wednesday, february 5. welcome to "way too early." you have been saved by the bell. we want to begin this morning right here in new york city where new details are emerging about tuesday night's train accident. just north of the city that's left six people dead. investigators still trying to determine exactly how an suv ended up on a railroad crossing as a packed commuter metro train north was speeding through the

town of valhalla and why the collision was so deadly. with more on that here's nbc news correspondent tom costello. >> reporter: the first arriving fire and ems units found twisted wreckage, fire and smoke and passengers climbing through windows, desperate to escape a burning train. >> all units, more ambulances are required for a car versus train motor vehicle accident. >> reporter: it happened at 6:00 p.m., rush hour, that serves the northern commuter towns. >> so the front two cars, smoke billowing out from everywhere. >> an suv was near the tracks when the crossing arm came down on the car. the driver, a mother of three, got out to check for damage. then inched forward, right into the path of an on coming plane. exploding on impact. as the train carried the suv 1,000 feet down the tracks the electrified rail tore into first

car. chris gross was inside. >> flames came up. about a foot away from my face. and then after that happened, you know, people are screaming, crying. >> we have one train hit on the -- multiple injuries. >> reporter: in all, six people were killed. including the driver of the suv. 15 people injured, some seriously. >> the lacerations, contusions, crush injuries, open fractures. dislocations. smoke inhalation. and flame burn injuries. >> reporter: through the day, the suv remained embedded in the front of the train as ntsb investigators arrived on the scene. witnesses told police the driver may have been been tracked when the train approached. >> she turns and walks and gets back in the car. slight hesitation and then moves forward and then at that instant the train came. >> reporter: piecing together how the accident happened will be part of the ntsb

investigation. >> is there any indication that the crossing arms were not working properly? >> we have no indication to believe that they were doing anything other than operating properly. >> reporter: the dead include the suv driver, 49-year-old ellen brody, eric vandercar, and 69-year-old walter liedtke, a curator at a museum. the other victim we are learning about is robert dirks. he was a married father of two and a research scientist. and also joseph nadal were killed in the crash. both were employees of j.p. morgan. now the other major disaster story we have been following overnight. this dealing with the death toll from yesterday's plane crash in taiwan. that now stands at 31. 15 people have been hospitalized and another 12 are still missing missing. search efforts are continuing

but are being hampered by zero visibility in the water. as you can see here, look at this. cameras on a dashboard of a car capturing the image of the plane as it clipped the side of the bridge as it goes into the water. here we have the video of the rescue teams clinging to one of the youngest victims, a baby being pulled out there. the pilot is being credited for likely saving more lives by steering the plane away from populated areas and the highrise buildings, both the taiwan building and transasia airways have refused to speculate on the cause of the crash, however, we can soon gets ans from the black box recorders. democrats and republicans are demanding that the obama administration do more to help jordan's fight against islamic state militants. the jordan king is vowing to do more. the u.s. has confirmed that

united arab emirates suspended the air strikes. the u.s. is not permitting enough fire power to defeat the terror group and meanwhile, the entire senate armed services committee is calling for the state and defense departments to increase military aid to the country and president obama is prepared to ask lawmakers for a new authorization for military force against isis. former deputy director mike morale is warning of a long fight against the islamic state. he said it will take 1,000 ground troops to defeat isis. now to capitol hill where ashton carter appears to be on his way to be the nation's next defense secretary. he promised the senate armed services committee he would be an independent voice if confirmed and disagreed with president obama when necessary. his testimony showed the two men appeared to be at odds on several issues including sending arms to ukraine. >> we need to support the

ukrainians in defending themselves. the nature of those arms i can't say right now because i don't have -- i haven't conferred with our military leaders or ukrainian leaders but i'm inclimbed to give them -- inclined to give them arms to get to what your question is lethal arms. >> so "usa today" has obtained a study claiming that russian president vladimir putin may suffer from the mild form of autism known as asbergers syndrome. this report from the u.s. naval war college claims that putin's neurological development was significantly interrupted in infancy, resulting in an autistic disorder which affects all of his decisions. so the analysis is reportedly based on the russian's president defensive behavior and facial expressions. one researcher said yet, if you need to do things with him, you don't want to be in a big state affair, but more of a one-on-one

situation. some place quiet. now the study stresses this is just a theory that can only be proven with a brain scan. it is unclear if the pentagon has acted on the theory of information. now, to the race for the white house in 2016 where mitt romney's exit is creating a big opening for scott walker. a new poll out of new hampshire shows the republican leading in the first in the nation primary state with governor walker ahead of jeb bush by seven points. then we have senator rand paul at a distant third. two weeks ago, walker had 8% support with someone else beating everyone but mitt romney. walker has a large network of donors in all 50 states if he runs. he raised more than $80 million over the past four years from nearly 300,000 people. most donated $75 or less. meanwhile, jeb bush is beginning to unveil what his campaign focus may look like if he officially launches that presidential bid. speaking in detroit, he said

that the city which is emerging from its bankruptcy shows why many americans are struggling to achieve economic growth and opportunity. >> how do we recapture prosperity and opportunity that once defined cities like detroit? how do we restore america's faith that any child born today can reach further than their parents? i know some in the media think conservatives don't care about the cities. but they're wrong. we believe that every american in every community has the right to push sue happiness. they have the right to rise. >> bush also admitted his last name will pose a problem if he does run for president. >> if i was to go beyond the consideration of running i'd have to deal with this and turn this -- this fact into an opportunity. to share who i am. to connect on a human level with people. i love my dad, in fact my dad is the greatest man alive. if anybody disagrees we'll go outside, unless you're like 6'5" and 250 and much younger than

me. then we'll negotiate. i'll still -- i'm not going to change my mind for sure and i love my brother. i think he's been a great president. it doesn't bother me a bit to be proud of them and love them but i know for a fact that if i'm going to be successful going beyond the consideration i'm going to have to do it on my own. >> but a new poll finds that bush likely would not face a problem if another lawmaker from florida enters the race. a new quinnipiac poll shows bush with a wide lead over marco rubio in florida. and a new poll is showing some troubling news for new jersey governor chris christie. if he would choose to enter the race in 2016. a new monmouth university poll shows 66% believe he's more concerned with his political future than governing his home state. more than half also say that governor christie does not have the right temperament to be a president and nearly 60% of adults in new jersey believe hillary clinton would make a better president than governor christie. the fbi is investigating

another computer hacking. this time it involves the second largest health insurance company. anthem confirms that personal information got out of 80 million customers and employees and it includes the names, birthdays, social security numbers and employment information. anthem serves customers in 14 states across every region of the country. congressman michael mccall said that the attack underscores the need for stronger cyber security legislation. cleveland police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras. the department unveiled the new policy yesterday. cleveland brought in 1,500 cameras last month, and officers are being trained on how to properly use them. police officials say this technology will increase transparency and accountability. one study on the effectiveness of police body cameras found that a year after implementing the program, use of force by officers fell 60% and citizen complaints dropped by some 88%.

forward to it. he loves snow. it looks like this coating this morning in the northeast, more of a nuisance than anything else. but there are some school delays because of it. it's putting down a quick inch from central massachusetts, central new hampshire and up to maine and back down through the hudson valley and into the poconos that's going to slowly shift to the coast. the first part of the morning you get a little coating of snow and then in the afternoon the cold air arrives. just be prepared for that, as we go through new england and the northeast. the other problem is more in the future. this is going to be sunday and monday, friday and saturday look just fine. just fine travel wise. our computers are really pegging the same areas that have gotten hit so hard by all of the storms lately. buffalo, syracuse boston one piece comes in sunday and then another piece of the storm will be monday. so it's two-day event. over two days we have the possibility of getting up to a foot of snow in some area but again, it's spread out over 48 hours. we can deal with it. but monday travel definitely

impacted. and the west coast, it's about time. it's been a month and a half since we have gotten significant rain out here. it's starting to come in today. it will be with you tonight and all day friday into saturday. we're hoping to get the three inches plus in san francisco where it hasn't rained in 42 days. this is the rainy season exactly what we needed. it's not snowing unfortunately. that's where we need the snow pack but we'll take what we can get. the other thing, thomas, the cold air is coming east soon. negative windchills from st. louis now back through detroit. and that's what's heading east. a very cold weather pattern. thomas that's really no hope. i was looking at the next 10 to 14 days and it looks very cold in the northeast and the great lakes. it looks like snowstorm, cold, snowstorm, and -- >> you sound like such a fatalist. i want to show america that barnacle is prepared with his blindingly white socks. >> that is nice. >> he wore socks today. are those socks or is that skin? no, that is sock. that is sock.

the dangers of smoking as lung cancer now kills more women and breast cancer in developed nations. this is according to findings from the american cancer society. although more women are steering clear of tobacco, many are facing the after-effects. cancer killed 1.6 million people in the u.s. in 2012 and over 8 million worldwide. well, on a lighter note, aaron shock said he'll be repaying the decorating cost of his capitol hill office. the illinois republican came under fire after a "washington post" story said there was a theme for his office inspired by "downton abbey," complete with red walls and the pheasant feathers. the services were donated but members of congress cannot accept gifts more than $50. shock said he's never seen "downton abbey" and only learned of it after reading the post.
