weeks, threatening to bring up to one or two feet of snow in certain areas, including boston where the mayor warned they are, quote, running out of space to put it. >> the storm we're getting is unprecedented. we've never seen this type of snow in our history. and there's discussions there could be more snow at the end of the week. we're focused one storm at a time. and we're working to clear this storm up. >> one storm at a time. let's bring in msnbc reporter amanda sakuma. explain the conditions you're seeing this hour. and what you're hearing about the morning commute. >> good morning, thomas. the snow is falling lightly here in downtown boston. but this is really just the beginning. city officials are calling this an unprecedented storm mainly because they had so much -- they witnessed so much snowfall already. and this is really only going to add up. we saw crews out this morning,

shoveling snow by hand. come out and look at how crazy the snowfall is. we are seeing it pile up on the sidewalks, higher than some street signs. and here the snow is even further than -- so much taller than i am. and it's blocking street science in some areas. i'm 5'3". i'm short. but these piles are stacking up. they're running out of places to put the snow. this is just the beginning. they've been plowing the roads so far this morning. but the commute should be a bit hairy this morning. >> everybody is prepared for that. amanda sakuma. we'll check in with bill cocaines and the latest in the weather forecast for you in moments. we turn our attention overseas and jordan's onslaught against islamic militants. it's carried out air strikes since a pilot was believed to be burned alived. the leader of jordan's air force

is promising to quote, wipe them from the face of the earth. and this comes as u.s.-backed iraqi forces -- the efforts will involve risky warfare. but secretary of state john kerry said he is confident the u.s. coalition has the upper hand against i.s.i.s. >> are we actually winning? and our goal of diminishing and destroying i.s.i.s.? >> well i believe we are on the road to yes. i absolutely do. and i think the evidence is not in my saying it. but it's in the facts of what is happening. we have taken out a significant proportion of the top leadership of i.s.i.s. their command and control facilities have been attacked interrupting their command and control. they know longer can communicate the way they were, as openly. they no longer travel in convoys as they were openly.

we said since the beginning this is a long-term operation, not a short-term one. we believe everything including the governing process in iraq itself, is moving in the right direction. >> meanwhile, parents of an american aid worker is holding out hope she is still alive. islamic militants said she was killed during one of jordan's afr strikes in syria. and jordan says the air strikes were miles away from where she was being held. she was kidnapped 18 months ago, when she left a hospital run by the doctors without boarders group. her family asked news organizations not to report her name. kayla's family was opposed to a risky mission, preferring negotiation talks. that led to u.s. officials rejecting proposals, before they reached president obama. back here at home we turn to presidential politics and polling out of new hampshire.

we have a bloomberg politics poll of the potential gop field. it has jeb bush leading the way in new hampshire, with 16% of likely voters. rand paul scott walker and chris christie trail closely behind, with no other candidates cracking double digits. but in new hampshire, rand paul jumps into the top spot with a 63% rating. in iowa "the washington post" is reporting, that robert costa is reporting, that every gop contender is trying to win the state. on the democratic side of things hillary clinton continues to show an overwhelming lead in new hampshire, with 56% support. elizabeth warren is a distant second with 15%. you didn't see ted cruz's name on any of the polls. the texas senator with 3% support. that may not stop him from jumping into the fray. he said on sunday he is looking

at a 2016 run, quote, very seriously. and he used an appearance on nbc's "this week" to take a swing at another white house hopeful. >> look jeb bush is a good man. he's a good governor. i respect him. if he chooses to run it looks like he's going to he's going to have to make the case to republican primary voters concerning his record. concerning his support for common core. concerning his policies on immigration. i think we'll have a debate on that. >> cruz may have a point when it comes to bush's positions on common core and immigration. 41% of primary voters view his immigration policy as a deal-killer. 20% respond the same way on common core. israel's prime minister is not backing down from criticism on his planned trip to address congress. similar to his trip to paris, he's going not just as a prime minister, but as a speaker for jews around the world. it appears the u.s. and iran

will reach a nuclear agreement before the end of march. and it is urgent for him to do whatever he can to warn against the dangers of a possible deal. critics say it's a ploy two weeks before israeli elections. and israel's opposition leader says u.s./israeli relations are being threatened as top u.s. officials skip this speech which was scheduled without white house approval. those skips it includes vice president joe biden whose seat will be taken by orrin hatch. president obama and secretary of state, john kerry, say they will not meet with netanyahu. time for business news for you. and a preview of markets. stocks closed in the red on friday, following the january jobs report. overall posted gains for the week. what can you tell us about the new unemployment numbers? they were decent. but the markets didn't respond so well. what are they saying about how they'll do today? >> yeah. it's an interesting one, isn't

it? unambiguously good numbers. 257,000 jobs added, which was a great number. plus the revisions for november and december very good. it means 1 million jobs have been added since november 1st. what's there not to like? the raise in the markets were wobbly as they thought that brings forward an interest rate hike from the federal reserve. today, though it's going to be interesting. the markets are starting the session a little weaker. and it may be some of the fear factor from europe that's affecting the early market calls here. we are down in europe at the moment. a lot of that is down to worries about the greek situation and whether they stay in the eurozone. banks are getting hit hard on the greece story. hsbc is one bank that's been in the news for all the wrong reasons again here. we had the major release of documents back in 2010. it was a leak effectively

saying 30,000 accounts and a great deal of money, 120 million involved. a lot of the people in the accounts were evading their taxes. again, this story has reared its head. it's an embarrassment for hsbc. i think they settled with the d.o.j. way back to the tune of about $1.92 billion. it is doing the circuit again, as a lot of the news organizations point out some of the new information from that leak from the swiss operation of hsbc. back to you. >> really crafty those details come out to expose. before we let you go not so good news for drivers out there this morning when it comes to gas prices. we watched the trend where they've been going down. but that's the latest? >> yeah. we've seen prices just jump about 13 cents here. but let's not get too carried away with this. we had very weak chinese data over the weekend, which is starting to undermine some of

college basketball has lost an i icon with the passing of dean smith. he led the u.s. men's team to an olympic gold medal in 1976. smith had one losing season his first, during his tenure with the tar heels. he played a major role in shaping the career of early nba stars like michael jordan. joran said other than my parents, no one had a bigger influence on my life than coach smith. coach was always there for me when i needed him. and i loved him for it. smith passed away at his home on saturday night at the age of 83. we want to bring you nba highlights. the kings and the suns tied at 83-83. sacramento on the inbound, with 2 1/2 seconds to play. >> cousins, for the win. yes. it's all over. cousins wins it at the buzzer.

>> heart-stopping. demarcus cousins sings that win at the buzzer. new york knicks owner, james dolan, showed an ugly side after a fan's critical e-mail became public. the fan who claimed to be a knicks supporter for 60 years criticized dolan as some of his decisions made as team's owner. he fired back in a harsh response. it reads, quote, i'm just guessing but i'll bet your life is a hateful mess. i'll bet you're a negative force in everyone that comes in contact with you. you more than likely have made your family miserable. dolan went on to write, start rooting for the nets because the knicks don't want you. >> he told him. >> yeah. mean. >> nice guy. >> yeah. jen, you're upset about this. you're upset about the grammer. just about the grammar. the european championships

in austria, jane channel crashes into an unintended object. a broom. she kept going. she said on the sled. >> just dodges it. little duck of the head. >> allowed a do-over. but she posted a faster time smacking the broom. let's get a check on your weather. bill karins standing by broomless, with a shovel ready for all of us. >> yeah. we got to jump in our cars and head north, right? >> south, i say miami. >> go south? even florida is going to be cold this upcoming weekend. we're in a brutal stretch here. the snowstorm we're dealing with today in new england, it's over two dis. it's fluffy. it's light. it's not like a scriplecrippling tomorrow. i think the cold coming on thursday, and another one saturday night into sunday could make this just like an epic stretch here of a 40-day period with incredible cold and snow. it's 16 degrees. light snow across massachusetts. halfway done with our snowstorm.

most areas got six to eight inches. we'll probably get six to eight on top of that. pretty incredible the duration of this storm. that's making this more of the memorable side. as we go throughout the day, the other thing we have to watch is the ice. the light, freezing rain has been going on for four or five hours in northern new jersey lower hudson valley. now, over areas of long island. starting to pick up that ice. and the morning commute over new york city, it will be worse there than to the north. it didn't snow. anytime you get the freezing rain right on top of the cold sidewalk. the steps or the pavement of the car, is it's worse. be careful driving in those areas. winter storm warnings continue as expected. boston it goes until 1:00 a.m. on tuesday. the light snow may continue until noon on tuesday. and another four or five six inches on top of four feet on the ground really isn't going to make a difference out there. here's the thing in boston. here's the forecast highs over the next five days. we have another snowstorm.

it looks like thursday maybe three to six inches. not a huge deal. another added insult to injury. and then the bottom drops out, thomas. so many people are going to complain more about the cold that's coming than the actual snow. i was just looking at new york city. friday morning in new york city could have windchills of negative ten. that's new york city. you imagine new england will be worse than that. that cold will last right through valentine's weekend from chicago to new york. it will be brutal. it will be -- you're going to go outside and any exposed skin you're going to be run inside. >> jim's yelling at me to look here. what happens if you're single on valentine's day? >> find someone else single. isn't that the deal? >> chocolate by yourself. that will keep your warm. frozen chocolate. coming up we're going to read the latest details on the situation regarding nbc's brian williams, after the anchor announced hi was taking himself off the air for several days.

welcome back everybody. just hours before gay and lesbian couples could begin marrying in alabama, the state's chief justice set up a showdown with federal courts. roy moore is issuing judges to not issue marriage lineses to same-sex couples. his order defies the federal

court's ruling last month. same-sex marriage is legal in 36 states in washington, d.c. a publicist for bruce jenner said the star was not texting and driving during an accident on saturday. saying, it is a devastating tragedy and i cannot imagine what this family is going through at this time. i'm praying for them. i will continue to cooperate in every possible way. four cars were involved in that accident on the pacific coast highway. police say a prius was hit by a white lexus, which was rear-ended by jenner's escalade. the driver of the lexus, 69-year-old kim howe died when the crash sent her into the opposite lane of traffic. and her lexus was hit by a hummer. officials tell nbc los angeles, that if paparazzi was following jenner. jern has been reported to be transitioning gender into a woman. jenner has not publicly commented on those reports.

the hit podcast serial might be gearing up for a sequel, now that the man is one step closer to appealing his conviction. a maryland court has reopened up the murder case on a adnan syed who was quittinged eded of killing his high school record. the case got new life after the podcast by "this american life." award season rolled on sunday night. it was a brit that owned the night. eddie redmayne took home the best actor. julianne moore won best actress for her work in "still alice." hawking was on-hand. redmayne called it one of the best nights of his life.
