she's clearly threatening the life of another, you know, innocent person. >> the hostage-taker calls police and local tv stations, which send news crews and broadcasts the tense situation live. the victim's family sees her on tv. >> my grandmother called me very frantic saying, wayne, they're going to kill your mother on tv. and i said, what? >> dolores is a single mother with five sons, three of whom race to the safeway fearing the worst. >> i thought from the very beginning that it wasn't going to end well. when i looked in the girl's eyes and saw that there was something lost and the knife against my mother's neck and you could actually see it on her neck, i didn't think it was going to end well at all. >> police proceed cautiously, trying to defuse the situation by talking to holly. negotiators are able to convince her to let all the other employees and customers go free. but the hostage-taker keeps dolores and holds the knife close to her throat. >> i saw the fear of death in my mother's eyes. you could see that she was afraid.

system. two men walk into the store and try to sell a watch. the two men were just in the store ten minutes ago trying to sell the same watch, but were rejected. this time, they have come back for revenge. while the store owner inspects the watch again, one of the men hits him with pepper spray. the owner falls back as the man smashes open the glass display case with a metal baton. but the tables are quickly turned. before the crooks can take any jewels, they run away in fear as the owner comes back with a .38 caliber revolver he keeps in his pocket. the criminals can't escape through the locked door. the 61-year-old store owner, fearing for his life, half blind from the pepper spray, fires at the men who cower in the corners. there's nowhere to hide. one of the men gets up. the store owner shoots again. the robbers plead for their

lives and try to protect themselves by putting a table and chairs between them and the store owner. the store owner fires more shots and bangs on the wall yelling for his neighbors to call 911. he fires several times and each man is hit once. the store owner keeps his gun pointed at them, telling the men to stay down. he gets closer and hits one of the men over the head several times, causing his gun to discharge. but he continues to hold them at gunpoint until police arrive. 24-year-old gregory mills and 27-year-old jason buckingham plead guilty to burglary. police say the store owner acted in self-defense and he's not charged. at a canadian convenience store in hamilton, ontario, a robber runs inside with a gun on february 5th, 2009, but there's no one around. the owner is in the back and the robber doesn't know what to do. then he calls out. >> hello? >> yeah?

he pleads guilty to armed robbery and firearms charges. a vicious attack on a bus driver in kalamazoo township, michigan, captured by security cameras on board. on march 3rd, 2009, a 16-year-old student becomes upset because the substitute bus driver isn't making the correct stops. he begins threatening her from the back of the bus, and the driver pulls over. the teen approaches, and as she tries to radio for help, he flies into a rage and begins attacking the 37-year-old woman. students pull him away, but he comes back and continues punching the woman, as more students try to intervene. the bus driver is treated at the hospital for a broken finger, bruising, and cuts and scrapes to her face and head. the attacker attends a school for students who have exhibited emotional or behavioral problems.

he's charged as a juvenile with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. he pleads no contest and is placed in a psychiatric facility for treatment. las vegas, nevada, april 15th, 2006. a surveillance camera in a casino parking lot captures a large group of teenagers walking past an employee who's sitting in the golf cart. at the bottom of the screen, one of the young men in the group stops and takes the worker's two-way radio. moments later, the employee is using his cell phone when one teen comes up from behind and sucker punches him. the attack is completely unprovoked. >> clearly, he didn't provoke them, as you can see on the videotape. that's what made it more senseless is the man was just going about his daily duties. >> the employee is punched over and over as others from the

group join in, hitting and kicking him. >> it was definitely shocking to see the type of brutality that was going on on the tape. >> the employee, 24-year-old richard markwell, gets up and tries to run away. the group swarms around and attacks him. one whips richard with his belt buckle. he falls to the ground. they close in and continue to kick and stomp. finally, they disperse. another casino employee off camera is also assaulted in the frenzy. >> there really wasn't a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it. they weren't out for the cash. they weren't out for the big loot. they weren't out for revenge, there weren't any of those typical telltale type of criminal mentality elements involved in this. it was just completely senseless. >> richard is severely hurt, his jaw and collarbone are broken, and he has numerous cuts and scrapes and bruises. but he's able to get up and staggers to get help. >> the type of beating that he took, it's amazing that he

didn't have any more injuries than he really came away with. >> police mount an intensive investigation to try to track down those involved, releasing the surveillance video, hoping to generate tips. the investigation reveals the group of teens were on a rampage all weekend long. police obtained surveillance video of other attacks the group commits over a 48-hour spree. it includes an assault on a man and woman in a store parking lot and the pillaging of a convenience store. there are six assaults in all, culminating with a shooting in a park. >> you can see how, as these events start progressing, you it appears these individuals were involved or are becoming more and more emboldened in their crime, feeling like they can get away with it a little bit more. >> 11 teenage boys and girls are eventually charged with various assaults and robbery crimes, seven of whom are convicted or plead guilty and serve jail time. coming up, an embassy under

special forces storm the japanese embassy in lima, peru, april 22nd, 1997. inside are 71 hostages, who have been held captive for four months by 14 members of the tupac amaru revolutionary movement. they're demanding fellow rebels be released from prison. peruvian military set off a series of huge explosions. blasting open doors and walls on all sides of the building and

filling the air with smoke. 150 soldiers attack the embassy. they begin freeing hostages, telling them to crawl to avoid being shot. the rebels take control of the embassy months earlier, during a cocktail party, and initially hold more than 400 hostages, most of whom are let go in the first few weeks. but more than 70 are held inside the mansion, as the standoff drags on for 18 weeks. the military digs a tunnel underneath the compound, and when it's finished, the order is given to strike. the fire fight rages for nearly 45 minutes. the stately, white pillar embassy becomes a smoking bullet-ridden war zone as hostages methodically make their way down the stairs to freedom.

one hostage and two soldiers die in the raid. all 14 rebels are killed. the military rejoices when the saga is finally over. december 26th, 1994, marseille, france. french paramilitary unit storms a hijacked airliner on the runway. inside are 170 passengers and crew and four algerian terrorists who have rigged the plane with dynamite. the commandos dressed in black use a passenger boarding stair ramp to reach the cabin door. they try to open it, but the stairs are too high and block the door but commandos finally pry it open. the commandos finally pry it open. they enter into a hail of gunfire as the terrorists, who are all in the front of the aircraft, unload their weapons. flashes are seen through the cockpit window.

no one knows if the terrorists will blow up the plane. the terrifying incident begins two days earlier, when air france flight 8969 leaves algeria for paris. four members of the armed islamic group board the plane, dressed as airborne staff. they take over before takeoff, threatening to blow up the plane. they demand the release of two political leaders and direct the plane to fly to paris, but the runway is blocked by the military. the terrorists release about 60 passengers, mostly women and children. but then kill another passenger before the runway is cleared and the plane is allowed to fly to france. >> they said that they are going to kill one passenger every 30 minutes. >> without enough fuel to reach paris, the plane lands to refuel in the french port city of

marseille before dawn. that's where the high-stakes raid takes place. all four terrorists are in the cockpit with three crew members. >> at this moment, the four terrorists were in the cockpit with us. they kill two terrorists quickly. approximately. >> suddenly a person appear s through the blown-out cockpit window. it's the co-pilot, jean-paul, who fearing for his life crawls out and drops nearly 20 feet to the ground. he shatters hi thigh and arm. >> i was in the line of fire. there were two terrorists at my back and the french troops, very, very dangerous. >> three terrorists are quickly killed, but the fourth continues firing from the cockpit, holed up with the pilot and flight engineer. as passengers stream out, a grenade falls to the ground and explodes outside the plane. it doesn't injure anyone. then one explodes in the cockpit.
