ord is recovering after the plane he was flying crashed on a golf course near santa monica california. his single engine aircraft lost power and he was trying to get back to the airport. the group of golfers heard it sputter and took out their cell phone cameras and taught the plane just before it crashed. among the people there was a doctor who found the movie bleeding in the cockpit. >> there was fuel that was leaking and my first instinctual because, i'm a spine surgeon, so i can kind of vouch for spinal stability issues and i did a brief exam, smelled the fuel. i didn't want to ignite. it would be a very bad problem. we unbelted him. ek tract extracted as best we could and

laid him down. >> he is said to have suffered a few gashes and injuries on the head but he was alert when he was taken to the hospital and the hospital sources are telling nbc news he's been in surgery but is expected to recovery fully. his son tweeted dad is okay. battered but okay. of course harrison ford rose to prominence at the helm of the star wars but friends say he's been an ace pilot for a long time and even first responders acknowledged it would take an experienced flier to have been able to make that landing. it's not the first rough landing the action star has survived. he's also a helicopter pilot. in 1999 the chapter he was in was forced to make a forced landing. he talked about that incident on inside the actor's studio. >> i understand you own some airplanes. what do you have? >> i have a husky.

it's a little 2 seater. i have one like the one in six days seven nights a different one. i have a bonanza b 360 c and i used to have a helicopter. i'll have another one soon. >> what happened to your helicopter? >> it broke. >> he's not telling. this is the real indiana jones. >> i broke it. >> what happened to your helicopter? it broke. that's just not a good sign. >> all right. and now let's talk about a plane accident in new york city. it's leading a debate this morning over whether airports should close their runways during snow storms. i didn't know there was a debate about that. the answer is yes. a delta flight out of atlanta with 125 passengers on board

veered off the runway on thursday. the plane slammed but a chain link crash and crashed into an embankment. it came to a stop feet away from and icy bay. officials say the runway was plowed minutes before the pilots reported positive conditions for landing but it didn't work out so well for this flight. passengers were quickly evacuated onto to runway. they used an inflated commute and adding to concerns they noticed the plane was leaking a gallon of fuel just minutes after the crash and you're looking at the photos from passengers. larry donald they showed the scene right after the landing. 28 people were hurt. luckily none of these injuries are considered serious. >> it was skiing. we landed. it started skiing and it hit the side of the rail and it went 400 yards. it came to a halt and we all

went forward. >> it was like in a state of shock. people were like what's going on? what's really going on? >> everybody had our seat belts on and it wasn't really that bad, but it was pretty scary and i'm thankful we didn't go to the water. >> the snow storm that caused that accident and the snow storm that hit us here in new york city have affected people all across america, and it was in kentucky that there was a nightmarish day on the roads. at one point there was actually a 40 -mile backup on i-65. some drivers said thursday afternoon that they had actually been stuck in the same spot since 8:00 p.m. the night before. nbc reports on the epic traffic jam that tied things up horribly south of louisville. >> reporter: it's really been scary. >> this woman was one of the hundreds of drivers stranded for more than 15 hours in northern

kentucky. >> there has been no assistance with food or water so i have been melting ice and snow to drink. >> reporter: nearly 20 inches of snow fell fast across the state piling up quickly. sydney miller and her mom forced to spend the night in their car. >> we really had no idea what was going on. nothing through the radio telling us if there was a crash or anything and we kept getting woke up throughout the night by strange noises. that was a little difficult. >> reporter: 200 motorists rescued and taken to red cross warming centers in nearby communities. people took to social media looking for answers. does anyone from v any updates on how much longer? going on 13 hours. some people are hitchhiking now. a crew from the louisville nbc affiliate found dozens of abandoned cars. elsewhere was a slippery morning commute from maryland to texas

rams held their hands up the weekend after, but attorney general eric holder said earlier this week it's an alternate version of events and asked how such a strong turn of events because accepted so ready and turned. some police groups feel vindicated and they should. others still assert that brown was trying to surrender when he was shot even though there's no evidence of that. but the overall message, of course from the department of justice in the wake of brown's death was the dramatic need for reform in the city's police department. also on the front page iran is a likely ally. an unlikely ally. ron iran appears to be gaining a lot of influence in iraq as the country tries to regain power of towns that were seized by isis.

and this is clear even in tikrit with iraqi forces launched attacks this week. the ranking officials have been assisting iraq and u.s. officials also admit that iran's revolutionary guard has joined in big time in the fight. supreme leader across iraq and iranian militia men are accusing america of not doing enough to help. it was just three days ago when talking about this that benjamin netanyahu warned the united states not to be fooled by the battle against isis. he said the enemy of your enemy is your enemy. >> now to the latest of question questions over hillary clinton's e-mail. the state department had a policy in effect since 2005. the daily operations need to be conducted using official

servers. hillary clinton of course is still under scrutiny this week for using so-called home blew e-mail systeming during her time in office. it makes it harder to gain access to her communications but also would make it more vulnerable to hacking. the article cites a department manual that predated her tenure calling on an authorized system to ensure safety of the information. meanwhile "the washington post" is reporting the state department review is underway. one department official says that it's still unknown whether clinton automatically broke the rules but it depends on the sensitivity of the information inside her e-mails. >> and state departments tarveged with going through the e-mails for the benghazi probe noticed the e-mails were all from a personal account. one official told the paper,

time to raise interest rates. most banks are saying not yet. possibly june or in the second half of the year but it's how the reaction from the authorities comes i think is what a lot of people are looking at as well. markets are trading around their 52-week highs mr. chairman, nasdaq up 16 points. the s np seems to be around 2100 at the moment. one, it could be negative if it has a good figure because they worry about high rates or it could be positive because they like the fact is u.s. economy is growing. interesting set of numbers today. >> tell us about the remarks that billionaire dallas mavericks owner made. he's always obviously getting headlines for things he said but he made some remarks that are raising eyebrows on wall street. >> this is the week with the nasdaq back at 5,000. and that was the level we were at right at the height of the internet boom in 2000. a level i remember all too well.

were a little bit less but still a significant impact for the morning commute in some areas. that ice is still out there on a lot of the road. a lot of school delays. even the d.c. schools are cancelled for today. and the temperatures are january type numbers. neg nif one in pittsburgh. the coldest you've been in march. the record low in nashville broke chb. the and new orleans, it's 32 degrees in march in new orleans. that's really cold stuf. the warmup begins west and heads east. 50s in oklahoma city and dallas. by the time we get to saturday it starts heading to st. louis and even d.c. up around 46. by sunday a little taste of it in the northeast but this is what we want. we don't want a big huge 6 0s. we'll take 40s and 50s for a week straight and then warm up. >> up to 80? >> no. unfortunately it looks like the
