american express' timeless safety and security are now available on apple pay. the next evolution of membership is here. they thought they had a plan. they thought they knew what was going to happen. but then it all fell apart in the most public way possible. last week at exactly this time you might remember we were in a countdown to the shutdown of the department of homeland security. because republicans thought they had a plan but their plan did not work. republicans in congress thought they would get president obama over a barrel. they would force him to change his immigration policies by threaten to go shut down the home land security department if he doesn't. president obama face these threats from congressional republicans before. he has adopted a consistent policy of not blinking when they do stuff like this.

they hold the government up a wall by its throat as a way to force the president to do something he doesn't want to do. so the republicans love this stuff. they have a plan. the republican leadership put forward their plan to keep the fight with president obama going for another three weeks. they were going to push back the homeland security shutdown for three more weeks so they could keep this fight with president obama going for three more weeks. so they put forward their own bill. three weeks of funding. that was the republican leadership's bill. they took a recess in the house, counted their votes, whipped their votes on both side to make sure they had enough to pass their own plan. when they were sure they had enough to pass their own plan they brought their own plan to

the floor. and their plan was not a good plan it turns out. because even though they had counted and were sure they had the votes, they didn't have the votes. nancy pelosi had to waited into the republican's mess and basically say, are you boys done here? do you need some help? and nancy pelosi gave the vote they needed to pass a short-term extension. and republicans this week just gave up. they gave up. yeah homeland security did not shut down. and republicans got nothing from president obama in exchange for pushing it right to the brink of shutting down. they got nothing. zero. that was their leverage. nothing. and so president obama held a signing ceremony and everything when it came time to sign on the dotted line. they couldn't even count their own votes on their own bill.

tada! the man in charge of counting the votes for the republicans in the house, the man they specifically picked for the job supposedly pause he would be so great counting the votes of the guys who like messing with the leadership so much. they like to make sure that the votes were lined up so anything they introduced they would know whether it would pass or not. things like what happened this past week would never happen. they have anked at the last minute their abortion bill their border bill and education bill. with hours to spare, they introduced and didn't yank and

failed to pass their own bill much to their own surprise which made them had to get rescuesed by nancy pelosi. that's why they had to get nancy pelosi. because of what he now describes as a mistake in his past. when he spoke to a white supremacist gathering in his home state of louisiana. you know david duke, the ku klux klan leader. steve steve scalise they should see him as david duke without the baggage. roll call did an article about

david duke at the time. david duke was a klan member. he made a kkk run for congress from louisiana in roll call for the article. they talked to other republicans in the state who might be interested in running for the seat. "another potential candidate, state representative steve scalise says he embraces many of the same views as david duke but he is more viable. they need to get behind someone who believes in the issues they care about but also can get elected. david duke has proven he can't get elected. they are smart enough to realize they need to get behind someone that can get elected. david duke has proven he can't get elected. that is the end of the quote. david duke has proven he can't get elected. but he, steve scalise, could. and he did. and then republicans this year,

this year the republican party made him their number three leader in congress. because she so good at counting the votes which actually he is terrible at. they never expressed so many concerns. during that whole controversy, they never said anything on the record that they ever have a problem with it. tomorrow, when thousands of people converge on selma, alabama to commemorate 50 years, president obama will be there with his family for the commemoration and the march across that bridge. congressman john lewis who led the march in 1965 and was beaten to the point of a fractured skull at that march will be there as well. he has at every congressmen commemoration year after year. please come with him to selma, to be there in person to remember selma. john lewis will be there for

this 50th commemoration. and more than 100 members of congress are expected to be there this week to commemorate selma. but from the republican controlled house, as of this afternoon, none of their leaders were going. this was the headline all day. g.o.p. leaders to skip selma event. none of the leaders of the house. steve scalise, kevin mccarthy, it might be awkward to send steve scalise. this was the word all day. no top republicans going to selma. thanks very much. and then late tonight as reported by dana bash, kevin mccarthy apparently had a change of heart. he has decided he will make the trip to selma after all. we reached out to his office and they confirmed the trip is now on his schedule. a late addition. the march in selma 50 years ago

was for voting rights. the blood spilled led to the passage of the voting rights act. the conservative majority gutted that same voting rights act saying if they would get those protections back. republicans in congress have refused to do that. so we're in a weird situation. former president george w. bush will be there at the selma march, tomorrow. and president obama will be there tomorrow with his family. and 100 members of congress will be there. up until tonight, none of the republican leadership was going to be there. mitch mcconnell will not either. his republican controlled senate is busy slow walking the nomination of the first every african-american woman nominated to be attorney general. she was nominated to be attorney general before a man named ash carter was nominated for defense secretary. she was nominated before him. no substantive objections have been raised to either

nomination. he is already serving, but the republicans in congress will not let there be a vote on her yet. she has waited longer than any nominee in decades for a vote on her nomination. mitch mcconnell has been very busy with that he won't with there this weekend. the last major national civil rights congressmen ration where the president spoke and it was a true national event was august, 2013. a massive, massive event held at the lincoln memorial to honor the march on washington from 50 years ago where dr. martin luther king brought his "i have a dream speech." republican leadership in congress in total skipped that event as well. none of them went. it is the selma march and event.

it is one thing to use these about the progress people can have. it is one thing to use thing things as a benchmark for the ragged dissatisfied march. one of the two major political parties right now don't even really care about the basic window dressing on this stuff any more. steve scalise, david duke without the baggage? sure, put him in the leadership. we won't say anything about the

it is a bipartisan delegation. we are here to commemorate the 50th an verse not only of the voting rights act but the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday. they will hopefully inspire and encourage many of my republican friends to understand the history of the voting rights movement and what it meant to the african-americans and eventually to the country. it's going to be a great weekend. >> there is a troubling contemporary fact right now is that there is a event. you have 100 members there. there is a bipartisan delegation, mr. kevin mccarthy saying late tonight that he will be attending. even though he hadn't previously planned to. there is a show of support while the actual voting rights act languishes. there doesn't seem to be any

rescue to try to bring it back. will this weekend be focused on that? >> it is good to hear that the majority leader kevin mccarthy is coming tomorrow to be part of this historic event. we want to make a case to our republican friends at the voting rights act needs to be repaired. two years ago the supreme court dealt a very severe blow. it eliminated section 5, which is that part of the law which protects the african-american communities all across the country from discriminatory voting changes. that part of the law is found to be unconstitutional and now we're waiting on congress to amend that part of the law so we can continue to enforce section five. we have groups all over the country that would participate in discriminatory actions if it were not for section five. this weekend is to commemorate bloody sunday.

>> are you optimistic about that, sir? you practice real politics, you have been very pragmatic. do you feel optimistic about that prospect? >> you know we talked about this about a year ago, and let me tell you. i believe after this weekend, my republican colleagues have witnessed what african-americans and the south went through. and i believe this will be enlightening to our friends, and remain hopeful and trusting that we can work the amendment for voting rights act. hoeuflly this weekend will be that turning point that will make that happen. >> thank you for your time tonight, i know it will be a powerful weekend and event there. enjoy. >> thank you.

so another thing that we're keeping an eye on tonight is from congress and bob menendez of new jersey. word leaked out from unnamed sources that he may be indicted on corruption charges. the indictment of a serving u.s. senator is a very big deal. the investigation reportedly focuses on whether he used his office to help a donor friend of his. in exchange store giftors or contributions from that friend. senator menendez for his part he defended himself angrily. he said he did nothing wrong and he has no plans to step down. justice department officials have not commented on this story

on the record. the sources are unnamed, and he has been the subject of rumors in the past and in reality. they have not panned out. multiple sources tonight, cnn first, and other news outlets thereafter reporting the charges are pending and could come within weeks. we have no word what the charges might be and no official word from justice. we will keep you posted as we learn more. ♪ okay, you ready to go? i gotta go dad! okay! let's go go, go, go... woah! go right, go left, go left stop! now go...

some of the tanker cars full of 70,000 gallons of north dakota crude each, some punctured, split open, and exploded. the brave firefighters of the galena fire department were there, but they quickly decided they were no match for the huge inferno of these burning exploding train cars. so the fire department retreated. they left thousands of dollars of equipment behind. and they left the fire to basically burn itself out. it has not. it is still burning right now. the derailment was yesterday afternoon and it is still on fire. you can also see from these photos that the rail company's estimation of six cars went off the tracks, it was way off. today we learned it was 21 cars

that went off of the tracks. at of this afternoon, the 21 cars that went off of the tracks, 14 were in a pig pile on top of each other. they said they knew that 7 of the 14 were punctured already and have been on fire. firefighters believe now that two cars terribly exploded and it moved to fife cars. the oil was pooling under the cars and making it hard to determine how many were on fire. right now they're still burning and nobody knows how long it will take to get this fire put out. here is the part where they start talking about a controlled burn. and it starts to all seem kind of nuts. listen to had, we got this from the local sheriff's department today. apparently one of the oil tanker cars that is obviously ripped own and is burning, they have been spraying it with water all day to keep it from not just burning but blowing up like a giant bomb.

the runoff from the water they were spraying on the ripped open tanker car. the runoff that is water and oil, that is running off into a little makeshift pond along size the wreck on the train tracks. and that pond is getting full. they don't want to keep spraying more water to keep that burning car from exploding if they means the pond of oil runoff water will breech it's banks and goo into the gale in, a river, and the mississippi river, and the wild life refuge they're near. so they made the decision this afternoon to stop spraying water. stop spraying the water keeping that burning car from blowing up. they're stopping doing that so that car will blow up. they're making a decision about it.

look at this local decision. fire responders will retreat to a safe distance. the cessation of the water being sprayed on the take will cause a heat-induced tear. protecting the water way, but setting the thing off like a bomb. that car full of 70,000 gallons of crude oil. this is how we deal with bomb trains, oil trains, when they blow up. we let them burn because we have no choice. we let them blow up and hope they don't take too much with them when they go. that is the strategy. the one in west virginia burned for four days. and like that train, this new train, that is just derailed in galena, illinois. this train, too, was one of the ones with the new and improved

rail cars that are supposed to keep this from happening. the supposed safer cars designed not to split open when they derail. they were involved in yesterday's crash, last month's crash, and the cars in the crash a few days before that one in canada. also in the oil train crash much in virginia last may. all of these involve the new safer rail cars that the industry volunteered to start using. to try to stop so many oil train explosions from happening. this is all the new and improved stuff. right now as the obama administration works on new regulations for oil trains, these cars are the standard that the rail car industry wants to

be used. if our big national plan for fixing this problem is to put more of these new and improved rail cars on the rails. and we watch them explode week after week. if our plan is making sure people use these kinds of cars, that's not much of a plan. missed an opportunity there to experiment and fail and experiment and fail you know i really admire my mother despite what people said she bought me a sewing machine and she let me play with dolls. she really dared to let me be different. i consistently focus on the fact that we're young and i wanted them to understand that we're here to make a difference for the country. well the funny thing about risk is that i don't really consider it a risk. if you get out there too far it looks like a big risk but when you're inside it... more than anything else, ...it doesn't even feel like a risk. i will honestly admit this. to me i start thinking when i was young, what are definitions of good? what will you do to be a good person in the world? and it always boiled down to... ♪ ♪

today. there was a whole tv show on people who pan for gold. it is called "gold rush." it ayers on discovery channel. it has been on the air for five seasons while i apparently have been under a rock. but the whole thing is literally about people who pan for gold in alaska which is apparently big business there. it is apparently captivate to go watch it get done. millions of people watch the show every week. seriously, millions of people. same goes for something called "talking dead". you have heard the tv show about the zombies "walking dead." not that. there is an after show called "talking dead" that millions and millions of people watch every week after they watch "walking dead." even more millions that watch the "gold rush" on cable tv.

nobody in cable news has anything that can compete with like the gold mining show, or the talk show about the zombie show. the closest that anyone on cable news gets to good ratings, gets to the ratings of like "gold rush" or the recap show for "the walking dead" is the bill o'reilly. they're all conservative all the time. they're the big cahona. there is a problem that fox has not figured out what to do with. they have issued two corrections/clarifications where he said he was an eyewitness to nones being shot in the head in el salvador. fox news corrected and clarified

both of those remarks to say that he had not seen those things. he had only seen pictures of them. but they have not touched at all what appears to be mr. o'riley's claim to be near someone at the jfk assassination. he made the apparently false claims as recently as this past november. he has made apparently false claims can as recently as this past november. instead of correcting, apologizing, or publicly addressing the issues raised about whether their star anchor has misrepeatedly misrepresented

his own role in news stories, the initial instinct there has been to stand by him while he he attacked reporters covering the story. he has literally threatened reporters. even though fox employs reporters themselves. and probably do not take kindly to this. now they have moved on to strategy round two. their new strategy for trying to paper over this, with the highest profile guy in this whole part of our national media, their new strategy is essentially to say who cares? he has great ratings. when the media watchdog eye media ethics.org asked about the growing list of allegations made, this is what they got back. when asked for comment on the latest series of questions about o'reilly that his ratings have gone up. they also provided a statement

that did not address the substance of the allegations against mr. o'reilly. nothing to say about the substance. but his ratings are awesome. when we reported on this story earlier this week, that's what they told us, too. we contacted the fox news channel again to ask if they would give us any comment on the substance of these allegations in what was a very unexpected and sort of amusing development, they didn't -- we asked them for comment on the substance of the allegations. what they sent us was a lot of information about how great bill o'reilly's ratings are. i have seen your ratings shoot my ratings in the head.

well, i have seen pictures of it anyway. fox has gotten mad at me for that. fox was asked for comment and fox said i completely misrepresented their communication with this program. for the record, what i said on wednesday night is quite literally true. we asked for a comment on the substance of these allegations about mr. o'reilly. they sent us a previous statement defending bill o'reilly. they sent us contact information for his book publishers which is nice, but we asked for a fox news comment, and links to other pilot aulz people's articles about bill o'reilly. they gave us no new comment. but they did give us all of that junk and a cash of data on how great his ratings are. and yes, you're ratings are great. stipulated.

out of all of us in cable news, you get the closest to the zombie after show and the gold rush guys. excellent for you, truly. but seriously, that cannot be the response of a news network to substantive allegations that your talent is lying repeatedly on the air about news stories. repeatedly, recently, and repeatedly. they essentially say turns out lying is good business for us. it is also untenable for a news organization to say that the facts of what gets said on their air, as news, do not matter. not if the ratings are good. honestly, that cannot be your position.

people treat fox news like it is sort of a news organization, right? the fox news channel and anchors are about to host a bunch of major party organizations coming up. there are real news people that work there and they want to be seen as a real news organization. they demand to be. but if they're defense is that it's okay if they lie on the air as long as it rates -- this cannot hold. maybe it is getting to them. last night mr. o'reilly spent a good portion of his show attacking msnbc on the basis of his superior ratings. yes, what you are selling your office is working quantitatively. congratulations. woo-hoo. honestly, the fox news channel cannot be seen as a news channel as long as that continues to be true. ultimately, that's what it is.

more legal chaos in alabama this week. same sex couples were allowed to marry, and then the counties were told not to do that, and the program judge said really, i meant it. little by little they did start granting gay couples marriage licenses. now they have stopped it again. full alabama supreme court told the alabama counties to stop letting people get married. so now it is not clear in alabama who will be able to get married, where, or what. in some cases it is not even clear who in alabama is married at this moment. when that new decision came out this week, the great george takei decided there ought to be a response.

the union. do the rest of us news idaho any more? we hear that a lot. this weekend is the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday in alabama. demanding the right to vote. they will be marching across the bridge again in selma. it will be a big commemoration. when we see those historical pictures this weekend, from what those heros went up against on that march, it is a good reminder than the people that walked into those police lines and into the police dogs, a lot were not just marching on alabama, they were from alabama, marching to change their own terrible, violent government. and maybe it was the worst place in the country, but people from there fought to change it. we celebrate it as a national turning point and a national victory that they did. when you look at where things are terrible, it is probably natural to say never mind, alabama, you're a waste of space. and when you see all of that
