2:00 pm
florida is the region most susceptible to the effects of global warming. that's all for "now." good evening, americans, and welcome to "the ed show," live from detroit lakes, minnesota. let's get to work. tonight republican war dance. >> iran is our enemy. >> we were able to bring them to the table. >> this negotiation was lost at the start. later, the silent treatment. >> now a message from hillary clinton. >> what i would like is for her to come forward. >> this is not how hillary clinton goes down. >> hillary clinton will address the state department e-mail controversy later this week. plus -- >> the fact that deadly force was used and employed must mean there has to be other factors
2:01 pm
present. >> it's not a black and white issue. it's a law enforcement issue. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. republicans are taking their obstruction of this president and embarrassment to a dangerously new low level. today 47 senate republicans wrote an open letter to iran's leaders warning the possibly nuclear deal not going to mean anything, is not going to last this guy is not going to be around very long. you have to deal with us. this was a deliberate attempt to undermine the president of the united states on his foreign policy efforts. the letters is meant to discourage the iranians from signing any kind of deal whatsoever. it is also meant to pressure white house into giving congress input in this progress. this is quote, anything not approved by congress is a mere executive agreement. the next president could revoke
2:02 pm
the executive agreement with the a stroke of a pen and future congresss could modify the terms of the agreement at any time. any deal they were going to do, which was signed by these guys right here -- it was signed by tom cotton and mitch mcconnell and marco rubio, ted cruz and rand paul. >> many iranians experts say iranians leaders don't understand our constitution. they need to understand that under our constitution that congress plays an important role in international agreements. >> the white house is pushing back hard on this stunt from republicans. earlier today president obama had this to say. >> i think it is somewhat ironic to see some members of congress
2:03 pm
wanting to make common cause with the hard liners in iran. it's an unusual coalition. what we're going to focus on right now is seeing whether we can get a deal or not. >> whether we can get a deal or not, that's exactly what the republicans don't want. there's no doubt that war with iran would be disastrous. everybody says that. how are you going to win it? you think we're not going to take losses if we get into something like that. we don't need it in republicans' opinion. on sunday lindsey graham got after it and said this is what we believe in. >> yes, iran is our enemy. they're a cold-blooded cruel regime that has killed american soldiers in iraq and afghanistan. i fear them more than i fear
2:04 pm
isil. >> you fear iran more than isis? >> absolutely. an iran with a nuclear weapon is a nightmare for us israel the entire region. >> these guys are beating the drum to war with iran. republicans are embarrassing the president international and they are denying his election of the people and they are doing anything they can to discredit president obama. there is a good chance we could get a deal. after years of no diplomatic effort and silence between the both countries, we are finally now at a point of getting something done. but because the republicans don't like this president and because they don't want to see him have any success whatsoever this is the link they're going to go to. i'm starting to believe this is all part of a huge plan. bring in netanyahu, let him set the table for this and let the
2:05 pm
radicals go to work in the congress. how could no democrats sign this? because it is all politics. it is not about a successful foreign policy across the board at all with this president. get your cell phones out. tonight's question -- do you think republicans are beating the war drums? text "a" for yes. text "b" for no. we'll bring you the results later on in the show. excuse me, that's msnbc.com. thank you very much. let me bring in the president of the plow shares found and an msnbc contributor and rabbi, the founder of the world values network. rabbi rabbi, i want to go at this with you. is this part of the plan? is this bb doing the work for the republicans and setting the
2:06 pm
table, and isn't this really what the israeli entire effort by the israelis -- isn't this what you wanted to do? >> iran calls america the great satan. it was 144 days of captivity for american soldiers. we sent soldiers who died in iran to save those in captivity. they're a regime that sponsors terrorism. this has little to do with israel. >> hold on one second. we seem to want to do a trade deal that has no human rights. the big picture here is to make sure the iranians do not have the nuclear capability to nuke your country or our country or any other country in this world.
2:07 pm
it's not status quo. i understand you want to go back 30, 35 years, 20 years, fine, but what about today? is is -- >> i'm jewish. i care about israel. having said all that iran is being appeased with a deal that will give them billions of dollars to wreak international terror havoc. you may not like the senators but the fact is executive fiat is not going to bring about a deal. a properly ratified treaty will. that's all the republican senators are saying. >> i can't remember another time when the united states senate has taken something so politically against our country on foreign policy.
2:08 pm
>> the rabbi is a great guy, but he's totally wrong about tom cotton's letter. everything is wrong about that letter. it is legally off base. what is being negotiated by the p5plus 1, which includes other countries, is an international understanding, an international agreement with iran that is nonbinding. congress and the senate have no role in that process other than through talking with the white house, talking with players about what they might do but they have no role at all because there is no bilateral negotiation, no treaty that will be submited to the united states senate, and it is nonbinding. so the disdain that these senators have for barack obama and the white house is being placed above, in my view their concern for the core strategic interests of the united states and the world. while i empathize with the values in iran, that iran with a
2:09 pm
nuclear weapon is far more dangerous today. that is a strategic focus which barack obama has been putting on this problem. >> joe, does this sour the possibility of a deal with the iranians, what the republicans have done with this letter? >> the letter is unprecedented as senator diane feinstein said today. i can't recall a time this has ever happened. if 47 democrats had sent such a letter to a republican president, they would be used of treason. there would be lynch mobs outside their office. this undermines the security of the united states. second, it actually makes it somewhat easier for the president to get the deal because this letter is to toxically partisan. it makes it much harder for democrats to join with the republicans. it probably for example, is
2:10 pm
giving democratic senator tim cain second thoughts about his cosponsorship of the bill by bob corker that would also kill the deal by requiring a senate approval of the deal. i think democrats are going to move away from this extreme wickng of the republican party which seems to have taken over national security policy. >> rabbi, there's been a lot here said by these two gentlemen. i want you to pick either comment. your interpretation of what cotton has done and the republicans have done is totally different. your response? >> with all due respect, i find it astonishing that we're focusing on is presidential protocol and prestige. it pales at the question of iran getting a nuclear weapon. the president's rush to conclude a deal that appeases iran and leaves them with a significant
2:11 pm
nuclear infrastructure has caused us all to choose. do we choose between presidential protocol or iran not getting a bomb? >> respectfully, let's focus on what the republicans have done here. they have undercut the president of the united states. would you agree? >> the republicans have asserted the legislative right to ratify a treaty which the white house is neglecting. >> this is not a treaty. there's nothing about this. >> that's exactly what the letter said. >> it is entirely through the process it is not a treaty. >> that's what the letter said. >> our status of forces agreements, the way the protocols that you have just said that we're debating are exactly the kinds of things that
2:12 pm
this white house uses to protect soldiers around the world. the congress as stepped in to undermine that authority by which these agreements are achieved. those are the two in kind that i think are important. we're seeing a scorched effort to prevent a deal ever with iran. >> i completely disagree. i think we're stopping a deal that leads iran with subterfuges and inspectors that were supposed to present that bomb. why take a chance? this is a regime. >> they have 20,000 of them now. what do you do? you have three choices.
2:13 pm
you can sit back and do nothing. that's what the bush administration did. two, you can negotiate a deal that stops the program in its tracks rolls it back, puts them in an iron box and gives you a year's warning time if they violate the agreement. three, you can go to war. that approach is what senator tom cotton appears to favor. you will accelerate the iranian program and start a convict that make iraq and afghanistan look like warm-up acts. >> what would be a successful conclusion here? do you want war with the iranian sns iranians? >> nobody wants war. the only thing that will prevent war is iran knowing the international community is dead set about them getting the bomb.
2:14 pm
it is about the international community forcing them to repudiate genocide. it is telling them that we're tough. appeasement always invites war. iran has lied to the world constantly and lied for 12 year about this program existing. why would we trust them? how can you give a murderous -- >> i would say two things. one in afghanistan and in the build up after the afghanistan war and our invasion iran cooperated closely with the united states. it was part and parcel of bringing karzai in. it is not completely a negative thing. while i share much of his concerns about iran's intent. the second piece is bb netanyahu and that thing is not the only view from israel. we have the long-term director
2:15 pm
of the missad. he said bb has put israel in a position of actually provoking a contest with iran that has undermined israeli security. there are a diverse set of voices inside israel about these issues and they are not all where netanyahu is. >> gentlemen, we have to run. appreciate your time tonight on this very hot topic, no doubt about it. thanks so much. remember to answer tonight's question there at the bottom of your screen. coming up, developments in the fight against isis. plus a new call for hillary clinton to explain herself. this time democrats are asking the questions and leading the charge. stay with us. we're right back.
2:16 pm
denver international is one of the busiest airports in the country. we operate just like a city and that takes a lot of energy. we use natural gas throughout the airport - for heating the entire terminal generating electricity on-site and fueling hundreds of vehicles. we're very focused on reducing our environmental impact. and natural gas is a big part of that commitment.
2:17 pm
2:18 pm
that's it. good job. nice coating. and get this one next. whoa! what are you guys doing? making sure nothing sticks. otherwise, we gotta scrub all this stuff off. huh, what? nobody thought of this before? what's wrong with people? dish issues? not with improved cascade platinum. it powers through... your toughest, starchy messes... better than finish's best... the first time. as if your dishes were non-stick. cascade. now that's clean.
2:19 pm
welcome back to "the ed show." there are major developments on isis around the globe. a new report from "the washington post" reveals isis could be falling apart from within. attempts to recruit local citizens for the front lines are increasingly unsuccessful and gorilla attacks against isis are becoming more frequent. these reports are only a glimmer of hope. they don't offer any real indication that isis is losing its grip on syria or iraq. boca haram has reportedly pledged official allegiance to isis in a video statement. they are now for their cultural brutality. they conducted five bombings over the weekend in nigeria that killed 50 people. they are in control of 8,000
2:20 pm
miles of northeast nigeria. joining us tonight former congressman from pennsylvania. geographically this problem seems to be expanding over the last six months, but now there is an allegiance coming from haram. what do you make of that? is this something to be alarmed about, that this could spiral totally out of control where we couldn't do anything against it unless we had ground troops? >> the presence of terrorists around the globe is something we have been dealing with for sometime. as you and i have talked about, it is a global war of terror, but second i wouldn't make much of this declaration. the isis group is very racist. they do not -- and their statements have said they do not appreciate africans.
2:21 pm
the type of islam that is practiced in africa does not meet the tenents practiced by fundamental isis. this is not anything meaningful at all. >> so how should the united states respond to this? i mean is this a new wave of how we need to fight this or what? >> no. the way we have done this is pretty smart on the part of the military. we established a few years ago an afri-com command. it was just coming about. the number two person in command is a civilian person recognizing that if we can get involved in proper way early in africa, yes, with a military operation and command that is able to with pinpoint precision take out the real bad spots, to be using
2:22 pm
drones, if appropriate, with the real bad people the number two person is doing what we really need to do to win this global war of terror. the state department is out there trying to win the hearts and the minds of the people. what's happening out there is no different in nigeria than what's happened in jordan or egypt. the pilot that was burned alive in a cave all of a sudden said isis is really not something we want around. that's beginning to happen in africa with our presence militarily and diplomacy and foreign aid and other ways we can bring about to help those be less hospital in africa to isis. it is exactly the right strategy. >> how much stock would you put into the reports that are out that isis is struggling from
2:23 pm
within and there are command and control issues with them there are recruiting issues with them and maybe they are starting to unravel? what about all that? >> i think that there's probably a limited supply of martyrs for any type of group out there, and i think that the strategy that i have argued has been a little slow to come about by the administration, but nevertheless is the correct one of making sure that those other nations out there begin to turn against isis particularly in iraq is beginning to work. look, the kurds are advancing and the baghdadian forces are advancing with iran. i got that but sometimes when you want to make sure you win, you are working with an adversary who might be a friend in this particular situation. i think also what is beginning to happen is our treasury department is having some victories.
2:24 pm
$40 million is what isis has. but they are cutting that off. there's always internal strife. i think as they're beginning to get squeezed the strife is beginning. this is a global war of terror and it will take quite some period of time before these criminals are basically removed from being present in the world. >> all right. good to have you with us tonight here on "the ed show." for me let me bring in congressman jerry connolly of virginia and another guest. what do you make of this news and how credible do you think these reports are that isis is struggling from within? >> i think it is more serious than what we just heard.
2:25 pm
i think there's some natural tensions and as you start to lose on the battlefield, as you start to retreat from the gains we made last summer those tensions get aggravated and accelerated. there are cultural tensions between isis and foreign fighters. there are foreign fighters who have come into syria and iraq for isis. they have a whole different set of benefits you know enhancements in terms of where they live and what their get, and their willingness to go to the front to fight. it is the syrians who get put in front and in harm's way and not foreign fighters. that is an issue that could
2:26 pm
effect isis' able to sustain itself. >> congressman, this doesn't change our strategy at all, or does this underscore what we're doing is the best way? >> i hope it allows us to exploit these tensions and keep the heat and pressure on to roll back the gains isis made and ultimately to destroy it as a serious force within the region. we have had some real gains in kurdish territory and now we see a real test case. >> how significant is this pledge of support? what's it mean as you see it? >> it is hard to tell yet just how significantly this will play out. boca haram's pledge of support is very much a media boost for isis and isis as we know is very good at playing the media and playing up its influence in that
2:27 pm
way. it is very good on social media. even this announcement was made on social media. it provides a boost for both organizations in terms of recruitment and the way that we address the size of the organizations and the success that they're having, but on the ground, i'm not sure this changes much. >> congressman, should we be more involved in fighting bow coo -- boca haram? >> i would separate the two. we would have to work with multilateral partners in nigeria nigeria. i think it's a heavy burden on the nigerian government to protect its people. nigeria is not in the kind of chaotic shape syria is right
2:28 pm
now, for example, in the midst of a civil war. we're prepared to help. in the case of isis -- >> lacy do you agree with that? is that a strategy you can might work? >> i do. i think we need to continue the address the issues of terrorism and the global fight on terrorism in not just military ways, but foreign aid and the existence of these organizations. we have to think the long term here as well as the short term. >> all right. good to have you with us on "the ed show." >> i appreciate it very much. coming up, hillary clinton is coming out of the shadows on her e-mail scandal sometime this week. plus protesters flood the streets of madison, wisconsin, after a deadly shooting involving police.

hillary clinton remains silent over the controversy surrounding her e-mail account. she offered no explanation at her public appearance. she will address the situation sometime later this week. i think she really needs to step out beyond twitter and say something as soon as possible. democrats need to make sure that hillary does not have any kind of problems like this before announcing a run in 2016.
2:39 pm
republicans are getting more aggressive. congressman darryl suggested on sunday that clinton could face criminal charges. >> voluntary cooperation does not guarantee it is not a crime to not deliver all. >> diane feinstein said it is time for clinton to speak up. >> i think that she needs to up and come out and state exactly what the situation is. >> you think it is hurting her? >> from this point on the silence is going to hurt her. >> for democrats, this isn't about hillary. this is about winning the white house and getting a candidate who is not going to have problems like this and to think that it is just going to go away well it's not or diane
2:40 pm
feinstein wouldn't have said anything. remember the last time we had the right wing in control of the white house? a conservative supreme court, tax cuts for the wealthy, a war we shouldn't have gotten involved in. a lot of bad stuff happens when republicans are in the white house. this is exactly what the democrats don't need right now and it seems it would be so simple to make this go away. joining me tonight on our rapid response panel a professor of politics at oxidental college and my other guests. what does middle america think or what is the pulse of this that just keeps continuing to bubble up and drip drip drip with more information? now there's clinton aids that are running interference. that's one of the stories that's out there now that they were

not this time. while i was taking xarelto®, i still had to stop racing, but i didn't have to deal with that blood monitoring routine. >>don't stop taking xarelto®, rivaroxaban, unless your doctor tells you to. while taking xarelto®, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. xarelto® can cause serious bleeding, and in rare cases, may be fatal. get help right away if you develop unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. if you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto®, watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. before starting xarelto® tell your doctor about any conditions such as kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. xarelto® is proven to reduce the risk of dvt and pe, with no regular blood monitoring and no known dietary restrictions. treatment with xarelto® was the right move for me. ask your doctor about xarelto® today.
