2:30 am
front page. >> it's wednesday, march 11th. welcome to "way too early." >> she's all over the news. >> hillary clinton is facing even more questions this morning after breaking her silence about her use of a private e-mail account while serving as secretary of state. >> the united nations served as a backdrop yesterday for clinton's attempt to end the controversy ahead of her likely bid for the white house in 2016. as for the main question of why she only used mother-in-law e-mail account she says it was for convenience. >> when i got to work as secretary of state i opted for convenience to use my personal e-mail account which was allowed by the state department because i thought it would be's easier to carry just one account. looking back it would have been better if i simply use ad second e-mail account and carried a second phone but at the time this didn't seem like an issue.
2:31 am
looking back it would have been better for me to use two separate phones and two e-mail accounts. i thought using one device would be simpler and, obviously, it hasn't worked out that way. >> of course you know, everybody we know carries two phones. it's all very interesting. when she was in the united states senate she carried two phones. everybody can watch carries two phones. i guess she decided i will never ever ever carry two phones again. but wait. there's more. less than three weeks ago hillary clinton admitted at a conference in silicon valley she currently uses two phones. >> iphone or android? >> iphone. okay. in full disclosure -- >> blackberry. >> and a blackberry. i don't throw anything away. i'm like two steps short of a
2:32 am
hoarder. so i have an ipad, a mini ipad an iphone and a blackberry. >> she doesn't throw anything away except 30,000 emails. >> clinton also admits in an e-mail she considered personal is deleted. her office said that's more than 32,000. half of all the emails in the account. >> we went through a thorough process to identify all of my work related emails and delivered them to the state department. at the end i chose not to keep my private personal emails. emails about planning chelsea's wedding or my mother's funeral arrangements condolence notes to friends as well as yoga routine, family vacation the other things you typically find in in boxes. no one want their personal emails made public and i think most people understand that and respect that privacy.
2:33 am
>> tech experts also question clinton's insistence that her private e-mail server was secure. she said it was set up for her husband and is resisting calls to turn over the server. >> we have more than met the request from the state department. the server contains personal communications from my husband and me and i believe i have met all of my responsibilities and the server will remain private and i think that the state department will be able over time to release all of the records that were provided. >> mrs. clinton says that server will remain private. i'm not so sure that that's up to her to decide. but her statement also is coming under scrutiny about her husband and her communications on e-mail since a spokesman for bill clinton said the former president has only sent two emails ever. both of those were during his
2:34 am
presidency. so as you can guess it didn't take long for the two sides to go to their collective corners, democrats and republicans reacted to hillary clinton and several potential republican candidates weighed in including carly fiorina. she told us hillary clinton told us to trust her. nothing in her track record suggests we should do so. republican rand paul criticized clinton for applying the double standard. >> i don't think that clinton should be above the law. she said part of the reason why she didn't obey the law was convenience. but i don't think convenience should trump national security. i think there's a little bit of arrogance some of these laws applied to lower people but not to me i'm hillary clinton. >> possible democratic candidates for president including jim webb martin o'malley and bernie sanders did not comment after clinton's news conference. but she did receive support from democratic senator diane
2:35 am
feinstein. >> i think the important you thing was she stepped forward and talked to people. and i think people will be reassured listening to it. now, i know this is look the most popular political figure in the country right now. and there is an effort from an opposition party to demean and diminish her anyway they can. i think most people agree personal e-mails should be private material. i mean if i have an e-mail with my husband, i'm not an administration official but if i were should i disclose that? i don't think so. >> it's unbelievable the spinning has begun. we saw another democratic senator last night saying things that made no sense. i made no sense. they would not put up with this in their own office. they wouldn't have done -- diane feinstein would never have done that as secretary of state and hillary clinton didn't answer the question. i wonder why these democratic
2:36 am
senators are going out there and embarrassing themselves by claiming that america saw something that they didn't see. this isn't a republican issue. this is a "the washington post" issue. this is a "new york times" issue. this is a national security issue. this is a freedom of information issue. i can't believe how a lot of these democrats put their dignity in a blind trust for a candidate who pay not end up running for president. >> let's bring in bob franken who has covered the clintons since the early '90s. what stood out the you as the most problematic. >> what stood out the me first of all talk about groundhog day circumstance. same kind of reaction that we've gotten ever since there was an investigation into whitewater as a matter of fact there was a famous news conference she held after trying so hard to keep
2:37 am
information about whitewater which was a nonscandal, one of those circumstances where the cover up was worse than the crime. there was no crime, apparently. without she admitted at the time when she held the news conference finally that she has to understand that if you're going to be a public figure and presidential candidate would qualify for that you have to understand that the zone of privacy as she called it doesn't exist. >> bob it's very interesting. you said there was no scandal there. there was no scandal perhaps we'll never know because of the fact that these rose law firm billing records that the press, that congress had been looking for for two years disappeared. then magically appeared in the white house residential area on the table. >> you're going way back. >> not going way back. because now we have the same thing with e-mails. >> you will recall that she
2:38 am
suffered the humiliation of being the only first lady who has ever appeared before a grand jury as a result of that. quite frankly i think she sometimes gets bad legal advice from people who just perhaps are too smart or think they are too lawyerly. for instance at her news conference yesterday she was very careful on her terminology. what does it mean to talk about in terms of the work product. that kind of thing. what about the emails that went to state department employees that are archived but what about the ones who were ancillary had some connection with the job she was doing or the foundation that's infamous now. all of that has been deleted. >> i guess what you're both saying is at some point it's you. >> at some point. bob, if you can stick around we want to talk to you some more with this during the "morning joe." >> bob franken thank you.

symbol for modern day racism. >> reporter: we spoke with an ou senior who asked us not to show her face. >> i wasn't surprised. >> reporter: she heard the same chant on a bus two years ago at an sae date party. the fraternity's national headquarters says it's investigating but any suggestion this chant is a tradition is false. university officials here say their investigation is not over and that more students could be disciplined. back to you. >> now, the two students who were identified in the video have apologized. the statement by levy petite's parents read include we were shocked and saddened by this news and sad for our son. but more importantly we apologize to the community he's hurt. parker rice says in part quote i made a horrible mistake.
2:42 am
i admit it was likely fueled by alcohol consumed at the house before the bus trip but that's not an excuse. yes, the song was taught to us but that doesn't work as an explanation. >> now sae's national organization is responding to the claim that the song was twaugt the statement its own that reads in part the national fraternity does not teach such a racist hateful chant and this chant is not part of any education or training. our investigation has found very likely that the men learned the song from fellow chapter members. the statement goes on to condemn the behavior of the house mother seen in the new video as well. >> let's turn to business. u.s. stocks plummeted tuesday with the dow falling 333 points. a really rough start to the new year and both the dow and s&p 500 are down in the red for 2015. now investors are fearing the fed will hike interest rates for the first time in nine years. hiking interest rates. it just doesn't happen.
2:43 am
i mean that happened last century. but could we see a rise in interest rates? >> possibly. because one like here in europe you chance are getting to near full employment. if you have full employment and that builds up inflation consequences it's morally good. but the fed feels it has to respond. all those economists who thought we wouldn't get a rate hike in 2015 is worried it's the start of the cycle. that's why the market took a little bit of a jetty yesterday. the other problem as you have higher rays and we have low rates here in europe the dollar rallies. what does it do? it makes it less competitive for those u.s. exporters and that's why these major indices took a bit of a wobble. they had a very long run. 3.5% off the peak which they hit on the 2nd of march.
