still on. >> you're caught. >> reporter: and begins talking to himself. >> what the hell did i do? killed them all, of course. >> reporter: former prosecutor jeanine pirro investigated durst in 2000, during the time of berman's murder. >> susan berman was killed because she knew too much about kathleen durst the case that i was investigating, and he knew that she knew. i believe that he murdered her to prevent her from talking to us. >> reporter: kathleen durst's friends feel one step closer to justice. >> if he's convicted for the murder of susan, i'll take what i can get. if there's more forensic evidence there, why not. only can put him away once. >> reporter: durst's estranged brother expressed his family's thanks. we are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of robert durst. we hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done.

the lapd would not confirm any connection between new evidence they say they have and the revelations in the documentary. we asked one of durst's lawyers what he thought of the final installment. he said i expected more. durst will plead not guilty when he makes it to l.a. tamron. >> let me bring in kathy wright she covered durst and the mysterious deaths she wrote two books about the case, latest title murder in beverly hills. >> thank you for having me. >> you look forward to seeing "the jinx," the show that aired, the documentary that aired on hbo, you assumed durst would trip himself up. could you imagine he would trip up in this way? >> this was incredible. it was almost astounding things he said along the way that would be damning and could be used by a prosecutor. >> here he was on this
8:04 am
microphone, whether or not this is admissible in court is a later conversation, but what you hear there, those chilling words, is that what you've known all along? >> yeah. he said i'm caught. that's it. and the thing is i think it will be used as a confession i think that in addition to the latest evidence was the discovery of a letter with his handwriting on it that matched something that only the killer could have written years ago. and i think that he got caught up. it was a response by him in a bathroom where he didn't think anybody was listening, but he was still wired up for the film and he did -- he shot himself with his own ammunition. tripped himself up. he thinks he is the smartest person in the room you know. >> that's interesting you make that point, that he believes that some people made that same observation. also you brought up the point about the letter. there were two letters, one that
8:05 am
durst wrote to susan berman that was discovered and another anonymous note sent to the police telling them the location of susan berman's body. he was asked about that during the documentary. let's play that moment. >> it's almost like a typed thing, with two typewriters, it is going to look the same. >> so you wrote one of these but you didn't write the other one. >> i wrote this one, i did not write the cadaver one. >> can you tell me which one you didn't write? >> no. >> that was in 1982 his wife kathy vanished. susan berman that was 2000. 2001 he admitted to killing his neighbor and dismembering the neighbor's body but was acquitted of murder claiming self defense. but there seems to be quite a long list of evidence kathy, that this filmmaker discovered

and many people are wondering what took so long here including many of the things you highlighted in your books as well. >> yeah, i mean there are so many things that are against him, but with the lapd seymour durst, developed half of manhattan, contacted the lapd and the d.a.'s office after susan was killed and basically said leave him alone. lapd never interviewed bobby durst and he was the number one suspect. they interviewed his attorney. and they did a handwriting analysis that came out inconclusive, where right now we have a conclusive handwriting analysis that the film makers did, and i am sure the lapd will do their own. i think we've got him now, they just couldn't get him on anything else he is elusive. he lawyers up with the highest priced attorneys in the country.

>> and you said he believes he is the smartest person in the room after studying and researching this man for so many years, what do you think he is feeling right now, knowing what's ahead here. >> i think he is in a holy moly moment, what did i do. i think he is kicking himself. it was so stupid the documentary was his idea. he thinks he can boom booze he will. i have seen police holding cells, i was there four months covering hurricane katrina, it is not pretty, not a pleasant place. went from a high end hotel in new orleans saturday night into the holding cell in new orleans where he belongs. he is finally behind bars. he is a menace to society and he's dangerous and finally behind bars and hopefully the lapd is going to keep him there. >> kathy, thank you so much. greatly appreciate you joining us. i want to turn to the other major arrest we are following, the suspect accused of shooting

two police officers in ferguson at that demonstration, about to make his first court appearance. 20-year-old jeffrey williams faces multiple charges of first degree assault and one count of firing a weapon from a vehicle. in a statement last night, attorney general eric holder said the arrest quote, sends a clear message that acts of violence against our law enforcement personnel will never be tolerated. robert mccullough says williams was among demonstrators thursday evening, admitted to firing the shots. prosecutors say williams may have been in a dispute with someone else when he was possibly firing at them and not targeting the officers. >> i wouldn't say he wasn't targeting police i am saying right now the evidence that we have supports filing the charge he may have been shooting at someone other than police and struck the police. that when the investigation is completed, may be able to disprove that part of it. >> sarah dallof joins us from

ferguson. do we know more about how officers were able to track down jeffrey williams? >> reporter: good morning, tamron. you know officers investigators said very little playing their cards close to the vest during the investigation. they had said they received a number of leads from the public. yesterday when they announced that arrest they said it was one or more of those tips that led to the arrest. they also say that they have recovered a handgun that matches the shell casings from the scene. what is unclear now is if williams was actually aiming at police. he said he told -- investigators say he told them a dispute led up to a shooting he was more specific with a bishop that visited him in jail to offer counsel saying that he had been robbed and was acting out of frustration. there are conflicting reports as to if he was a protester. prosecutors say he had been part of that demonstration earlier that night and demonstrations on
8:10 am
several other occasions, but core group of demonstrators out night after night since april 9th say they don't recognize him. officials stress this is an on-going investigation. there's more information to come out. meanwhile, two officers shot continue to recover, one shot in the shoulder the other in the cheek under his eye. both are now resting at home. back to you. >> thank you, sarah. joining me bishop derrick robinson pastor in st. louis, spoke with the suspect jeffrey williams in jail and was one of the organizers of the protests. thank you so much for joining us sir. >> thank you so much for having me. >> first of all, let me get how did you end up speaking with jeffrey williams in jail. did you know him prior to his arrest? >> well i wanted to go and speak with him just to offer counsel and wisdom. >> and what did he tell you regarding the allegations? >> well he said that he was
8:11 am
upset, he was reacting out of frustration and anger. he showed a lot of remorse, very sorry, apologetic. we had a long extensive talk. he shared with me that he wished he had not done it that he had an opportunity to do it again, he will make sure that did not happen. >> did he say he was targeting police that night? >> well he didn't say that but i know he wasn't targeting the protesters. >> how do you know that? >> because in this committee, we are family. protesters, people all of us are family. you know as a family that's what we do. we protect each other. i hate that if things got out of hand at this level, which we are
8:12 am
able to handle it in a different manner. we will definitely show support to him. we will be praying for him. we will be even giving wisdom to him moving ahead but even in my rebuttal to bob mccullough stating he was active protester, as a lead organizer in the protest movement, he had not been a protester. he was actually coming out that afternoon to see what was going on, but he had never protested before so we wanted to make sure that the narrative of our story is not given to be and be painted as a black eye to our community because that's not who we are. >> back to his motive here, back to his motive, did you ask him if he was targeting the police that night? >> well, we can't say that was his motive because we don't know. only person that knows that
8:13 am
story -- >> did you ask him. >> only person that knows that story is him. i don't think he had a negative motive at all. >> but when you were there with him in jail did you ask him if he was targeting the police department, police officers? >> well no, i didn't want to ask him that question i wanted to leave that to his attorney to ask him and address in a press conference. but while he was arrested -- go ahead. >> there was a report that he believed he had been robbed by someone and that he was seeking vengeance on a group of protesters because of an incident that happened did he tell you anything about that? >> he did say that he was robbed while on the scene. and i think -- i know -- i believe he was frustrated, and i really believe he was set up and i really believe that i know it may not -- >> set up by who, let me pause
8:14 am
you on that set up by who? >> police. i think he was set up i would go farther to say some of the police you know the story just does not add up. >> let me i can't let you -- obviously i can't let you say that he was set up by police. what evidence or proof do you have of that because right now as i understand it he has confessed. they found the caliber weapon that was used was with him, and he has according to police admitted to firing those shots. so what is the set up sir. >> well i think he was not only, he was beaten when he was brutally beaten when he was arrested. i think he was coerced, he was not even given opportunity to seek counsel before he even -- the police they beat him to confessing. so not sure but i will allow
8:15 am
his attorney as he is meeting with him now to give further questions and to be able to answer more questions concerning what was his response. but i think that things would have been different if he was offered a public defend errorer or attorney. >> did he or did he not say he fired the weapon at the crowd, whether it was directed at officers or protesters, did he say he fired that weapon? >> well i would allow the attorney to make that zblamt all right. he did admit it. he admitted. he said he told me he did admit it to the people that's what he did. and i really hate that he did that without seeking counsel, and i hate that the officers brutally beat him into coercing him to state those things prior to and putting him in isolation.
8:16 am
>> we have no proof of these allegations, and you provided me with no proof of this. we will continue to follow this story, but the reality of it is at this point authorities have arrested this individual. according to authorities, he confessed, a weapon was found. obviously it will all be worked out in court but to be responsible here say there's no evidence of -- at this point -- that he was forced into confession of any kind and that authorities or anyone else set him up but again, that's to be determined in court. we do not have any evidence and you have not provided any of that to me at this point and if you have we will continue the interview with you, but right now we don't have that. thank you so much. go ahead. >> thank you. developing now, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu warned supporters he may not win tomorrow's election after the final poll shows his party is falling behind. live report from tel aviv next.
