ges are being held. tunesia media is reporting two gunmen are dead. this image taken inside that museum appears to show one of the gunmen. however, nbc news has not confirmed this. all but one of the victims are believed to have been foreign tourists. what's the latest on the possibility of hostages being inside? >> reporter: we heard that right now there are the injured tourists are being transferred, taken to a hospital nearby. we heard that there are 38 tourists injured and taken to different hospitals near the area but the security forces are in control of the building of the museum and still sweeping the area looking for potential victims, whether

injured or killed. the only confirmed number so far is eight of the people inside the museum were killed and one security officer at the hospital. we don't know if more tourists were killed or a number of hostages inside. >> we are looking at video of what appears to be tourists inside that museum running past security forces who are around that area. do we know any more details on how it plays out. >> reporter: the interior ministry spokesperson confirmed that two gunmen entered the parliament building which is next to the museum disguised as soldiers, wearing military uniforms. then they got to the museum through the parliament building.

that's when gunshots were heard late this morning between 10:00 and 12:00. and then after that that's when the armed confrontation started between the gunman and security forces. the competition led to killing two of the gunmen. they're still looking for another suspect in the area if there is a third or fourth one, they're not sure yet. they're still sweeping the building. >> have we heard from officials as to whether or not they believe the individuals are tied to any organization? >> reporter: spokesman of the interior ministry says no one has claimed any responsibility yet and the militants, at least

gunmen are probably tunesian but it is not a final information yet. it is to be confirmed soon. >> thank you very much. following this breaking news out of tunesia. eight people dead as you heard. now at least two gunmen have also been killed here and it is unclear whether more may be involved with this attack at a museum in tunesia. we will continue to follow that breaking news. we are following another breaking news story in new york where a u.s. air force veteran accused of attempting to join isis in syria is about to make his first court appearance to face federal charges. this morning, we are learning more about that man's background. according to the federal indictment the man identified as 47-year-old tairod pugh was born and raised in new jersey worked in the air force from 1986 to 1990 before moving to the middle east. the fbi secretly arrested him in january and held him for the past two months. msnbc ari melber is outside the

extensive google searches that they say showed the path of what he was trying to do. this is as you are reporting and people discussed the kind of self radicalization we see on the internet. in this indictment and accompanying information, prosecutors talk about him searching for specific terms like isis crossing sites, like where in syria he could cross-over, like who was controlling kobani and when, as well as extensive amount of videos, the infamous propaganda videos and beheading videos he was interested in those, all of which they say show he was not simply gathering information or researching, which could in plenty of scenarios be legal but rather doing what is a serious federal charge trying to support, materially support isis. he is facing up to 35 years in federal prison if convicted. >> ari melber outside that courthouse in brooklyn where this individual will be arraigned. thank you for that information, ari. now in studio senior analyst

evan kohlmann, also senior partner at flashpoint global partners. here we go again, thank you for joining us. an individual if allegations are true with a heavy footprint on the internet including on social media, and according to the indictment, he downloaded a number of things tied to isis and some of the mass executions we have seen. >> apparently he was doing research on the routes one would take to get to syria to join isis. one of the questions is what exactly is this guy. on his facebook profile, he is promoting everything from and war al awlaki to hamas. and hamas and isis don't get along. at least from initial appearances, this person appears to be an all purpose jihadist, supporting a variety of jihad causes. we are not sure the factor that pushed him foreign was. all of a sudden decided to join
8:07 am
isis. a curious point is that this is an individual that was supposedly laid off from his job in december, someone who had radical beliefs going back a long time. is that what pushed him to make that final step or was there something else? hard to know right now. >> it is interesting how he was arrested. he was denied entry by turkish authorities and sent back to the u.s. turkey has been heavily criticized as the pathway into syria where the isis fighters have been meeting and forming. >> and i think we should be careful about complimenting turkey too much in this case because it does appear turkey knew well in advance this individual was an isis supporter, would be isis supporter headed their way. they had every warning and indication he was going there. what's more disturbing in the case of turkey is all of the cases of people that have gotten through, including 14 and 15-year-old girls traveling by themselves from united kingdom. the question is doesn't turkey have more responsibility to stop these people beyond simply doing
8:08 am
the obvious ones? again, to me a 14 or 15-year-old girl traveling by themselves to istanbul, that is an obvious one. again, i think we are looking for more cooperation with the turks. it is a good sign but it is just the beginning. >> back to his background in the military, he was fired from a job in kuwait as an an player mechanic in 2014. nevertheless an individual like that joining isis english speaking veteran of the u.s. air force. obviously would be a valuable commodity to isis. >> and propaganda sense, certainly. hasn't been in the armed services as awhile but has been around a long time. i don't think he has practical knowledge, doesn't seem that he has practical knowledge. >> for propaganda purpose. >> sure an american speaks english, former u.s. air man, someone who can effectively communicate isis' message to other people that look sound, would appear just like this guy. that's exactly what isis needs
8:09 am
and what differentiates isis from other groups like al qaeda and others that don't have a supply of english speaking westerners who can communicate that message effectively. i think that's what makes isis different. >> thank you very much evan. i want to take you back to north africa tunesia. we are getting more information on the attack that happened at a museum there. according to the information we now have the tunesia premier says 19 people killed in this attack at the tunis museum including 17 foreign tourists. these are some of the images coming out of tunesia where the attack took place. people running to safety. right now 19 people according to officials out of tunesia, killed in this attack. the tunesia media reports two gunmen are dead. our reporter on the scene indicated that authorities are looking for other individuals who may be tied to this. no organization no group

claimed responsibility so far for the attack. but again, these are some of the images coming out. many people there, many victims believed to have been foreign tourists at this point. the building where it happened has been secured, but the search continues for any individuals who were connected to this. right now, two gunmen reportedly killed and now we learned 19 people killed in that museum including 17 foreign tourists. we will continue to follow that breaking news for you throughout this hour. developing now, the state department is not commenting on reports of death threats against u.s. -- are now commenting regarding threats against u.s. ambassador to japan care line kennedy. according to the associated press, the threats to kill the daughter of president kennedy came in phone calls to the u.s. embassy in tokyo. in the past hour a state department spokesperson said quote, we take every step possible to protect our personnel.
8:11 am
we are working with the japanese government to ensure the necessary measures are in place. again, that comment from the state department, just in the last hour. katy tur joins us live from london. katy state department is being tight lipped about specifics of the threats. they have indicated the person did speak english. >> the calls came from somebody speaking english. she assumed that post in 2013 and is obviously a high profile figure there. with the violent attack on another u.s. ambassador this month, police are investigating how serious this might be. all seemed normal as she gave a lecture at a university in tokyo today. the press reports japanese police are investigating death threats against her. japanese media say calls were made to the u.s. embassy, came from somebody speaking english.
8:12 am
they're looking into the possibility the person might be trying to blackmail the 57-year-old mother and diplomat. the u.s. embassy did not have comment, but threats like this against u.s. politicians and diplomats are not uncommon. still, reports come on the heels of the attack on u.s. ambassador mark lip earth in south korea earlier this month. a korean national testified he knifed him because of his symbolic representation of the united states. kennedy has been the ambassador to japan for just over a year. the associated press reports authorities believe threats made to her are similar to ones targeting the con superdelegate general in okinawa, home to 50,000 u.s. troops. adding to heightened anxiety, michelle obama who landed in tokyo this morning, the first lady is kicking off her educational tour promoting schooling for girls. now, other than the suspected

welcome back. a telling sign in the wake of prime minister benjamin netanyahu resounding re-election victory. so far there has been no public
8:19 am
comment from the white house. in final days of the campaign netanyahu took a sharp turn to the right, staking out a series of hard line positions notably saying he opposes a palestinian state. as nbc's andrea mitchell reports, netanyahu alleges that money from the u.s. state department was financing his opposition. from the israeli newspaper, haaretz, first reaction from palestinian officials after the win after vow no palestinian state shows they have no partner in israel. geraint vincent joins me with me in the studio political analyst and daily beast columnist jonathan alter grant.
8:20 am
let me start with you. it was around this time yesterday we were speaking with you about how close the race would be how uncertain the outcome was at that time. a few hours later, it was a complete opposite story. >> reporter: yes, tamron. the polls i think had a real impact actually on the final days of the campaign all the way through had the labor party, opposition labor party ahead sometimes by three or four seats and i think a lot of experts think it had a real impact on the vote itself. there were a lot of right wing voters in israel who perhaps were thinking about not bothering with voting at all. but when they saw that the right wing was in danger at bb netanyahu warned them yesterday, they got out and voted to
8:21 am
prevent inauguration of a leftwing government. the polls were way out in the end, but the result may have been an actual reaction to them. >> as we mentioned, benjamin netanyahu working to form a government but some of the aftershocks of comments he made in the final hours, including a facebook post where he said right wing government was in danger, made note that arab voters were coming out in droves to the polls, what's the reaction this morning to that? >> reporter: those comments variously described as hard politics. some people described it as desperate, others described it as racist. however you view it it works. tension in israel focusing on what the nature of netanyahu's new government will be. there's always a lot of deal making after an israeli election. no party wins an outright majority, but that deal making
8:22 am
process will be shorter because of the extensive benjamin netanyahu victory. also the fact he did coalition building during the campaign. he brought them on board with promises not to carry on building settlements or occupied territory and promise that there would not be a palestinian state on his watch, and to the center of israeli politics promised the leader of one of the centrist parties the finance ministry job should he be prime minister. the new netanyahu government is going to encompass right wing parties and internationalist parties, one from the center and bb at the top of it. >> let me bring you in. one headline said with israel election over netanyahu likely to remain a thorn in obama's side. former white house press secretary robert gibbs was on morning joe this morning. let me play what he said and get your thoughts. >> i think this is a relationship between the president and the prime minister that you could see getting worse

in the next few weeks if an iran deal comes through before it ever has a chance to get better. i think it will be very challenging, despite the fact that there are a lot of things mutually important to both countries as relates to foreign policy. >> he is highlighting iran. you in your piece talked about the ugly win as you refer to it. >> this is a case tamron where netanyahu won and israel lost because it will now become more isolated in the world. and you will see more efforts, particularly in europe to boycott israel. you're going to see efforts in international organizations to ostracize israel. we have seen this a lot in the united nations over the last 40 years but the united states has always exercised its veto of u.n. security council
8:24 am
resolutions that are harmful to israel. that might now end. the u.s. i think will continue to veto obnoxious anti-zionist resolutions in the u.n. but there might be others that are strong condemnations of netanyahu's rejection of a two state solution that the u.s. no longer vetoes. that's a huge change with the united states because of these strained relations, now joins with the rest of the world, in isolating israel that could have big ramifications down the road. >> that's an interesting point you make. we have this sound from the u.s. special envoy who is part of the peace talks that went on when the two state discussion took place. former senator george mitchell was on lawrence o'donnell last night. let me play what he said. >> the fact he did it on the last day suggests he probably would have preferred to win without it. but felt it was necessary.
8:25 am
it is very painful for me because when i was in the region, i met with the leaders of nearly 20 arab countries and almost without exception they did not believe his statement when he made it in 2009 that he supported a two state solution. they said to me bluntly he is not telling the truth, he is not sincere. i argued that he is the prime minister, he set the policy. they should take it as a positive and work to build on that policy to try to get a two state solution. >> so what do you believe would be the next step for naught -- netanyahu? >> he is correct. there's more clarity after the election than before the election. we know exactly where benjamin netanyahu stands. we know he is engaged in a deceptive game. we know he has been lying to the
8:26 am
world, including his most closest ally the united states of america. he said as long as i am prime minister, there will be no palestinian state. he does not believe in a two state solution. more importantly i think use of fear, use of zion phobia and racism is a significant segment of citizens warning that arabs were flooding the polls, this is from a leader who basically celebrates israeli democracy. i think the headlines f you read headlines throughout the region i read all of the headlines today, extremism triumphs in israel. the palestinians have no partner. there's a real fear now that the situation in palestinian territory could erupt into political violence. the reality is the question is
8:27 am
what will the obama administration do. another point is that obama has been correct, obama knew that benjamin netanyahu was going through the motions for the last six years. imagine, six years, playing the united states, and trying to divert attention from the palestinian, israeli peace process, talking about iran. this is really a sad day, not just for the peace process, sad day for israeli democracy. you have almost 30 seats a critical segment of the israeli public voted no to the peace process between israel and the palestinians. very, very serious outcome to that. >> and last word here expected to hear white house reaction later this afternoon. obviously the ramifications of this election will be felt for a very long time throughout what we do know. >> it is unpredictable, could be an election next year depending
8:28 am
what happens now. it is important to understand the 30 seats are only a quarter of the israelis so people shouldn't believe all of israel now or majority of israel now rejects a two state solution. it is one quarter that rejects it. having said that this is a moment of clarity. it is very harmful for the state of israel in the medium and in the long term. it may be if we see the violence that erupts on the west bank that things could move in the other direction because generally that's not a smart strategy. if the palestinians were smart, they would go with people power now, nonviolent large scale, nonviolent protests to get the world on their side and could make some advances. but too often the palestinians are their own worst enemy, doing things like missiles from gaza. part of it plays out how the palestinians react as well as
