good day. this is exactly what we wanted. at this hour it's not clear when he plans to drop out of the race. he'll only serve to disrupt the republican field, so it is going to be interesting to see how this handle this guy. earlier today cruz kicked off his campaign at liberty university in lynchburg, virginia. it was founded by the late pastor jerry fallwell. he spoke about his faith and his family and tried to gain support. cruz is making the pitch for the social conservative vote. >> for so many americans, the promise of america seems more and more distant. what is the promise of america? the idea that the revolutionary idea that this country was founded upon which is that our rights they don't come from man, they come from god almighty.

>> reclaiming the promise of america was a central theme in cruz's speech today at liberty university. cruz urged the crowd to imagine a president who would stand up to iran abolish the irs, protect the border protect the marriage, and repeal obamacare. >> five years ago today, the president signed obamacare into law. instead of the joblessness instead of the millions forced into part-time work instead of the millions who have lost their health insurance, lost their doctor, have faced sky-rocketing health insurance premiums imagine in 2017 a new president signing legislation repealing every word of obamacare. >> joblessness? skyrocketing rates? i mean isn't it rather unusual that a guy who is so faith based

and connected he would use the platform of jerry fallwell's college to go out and lie to the american people? >> the answer will not come from washington. it will come only from the men and women across this country. from people of faith, from lovers of liberty, from people who respect the constitution. it will only come as it has come at every other time of challenge in this country where the american people stand together and say, we will get back to the principles that have made this country great. we will get back and restore that shining city on a hill. >> is he using a teleprompter there? probably not. a red meat speech for the republican base, no doubt about it. cruz toned down his typical rhetoric for his presidential announcement.

unfortunately for cruz, the video library is very extensive. >> i intend to speak in support of defunding obamacare until i'm no longer able to stand. he's promising to print up and give work authorizations. essentially, he's gotten in the job of counterfeiting immigration papers. it wasn't global warming anymore. then it became climate change. you look at our constitution. you look at our bill of rights. this is an administration who seems bound and determined to violate every single one of our bill of rights. i don't know that they have yet violated the third amendment, but i expect them to start kwaur quartering soldiers in people's home soon. your world is on fire. but you know what?

your mommy is here and everyone is here to make sure that the world you grow up in is even better. >> don't you find it ironic that he's the first one who jump out and says he wants to be president? he wrote, hagel's nomination has been publicly celebrated by the iranian government. he said that about a vietnam veteran. it's a claim that was blatantly false. ted cruz played a major role in the 2013 government shutdown. the shutdown cost this economy our country $24 billion so he could grandstand. obamacare was still funded and people got their health insurance. cruz just wanted headlines to boost the ultraconservative support for his presidential run. let's see if he gets it. everything cruz has done in the senate has been to position himself for today.

come on. the rest of you jump in. let's get going. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think. tonight's question -- will ted cruz be the first canadian born president of the united states? he was always questioning the legitimacy of barack obama. text "a" for yes. text "b" for no. we'll bring you the results later on in the show. let me bring in brett woodhouse and mercedes and barry lynn. barry, i'll go with you first, if i can here tonight. >> all right. >> the platform, isn't that a signal in itself? your thoughts on the stage? >> my thoughts in four words. here we go again. in 2012 four candidates for the

republican nomination for the presidency said god told them to run. in rick santorum's case he said god told his wife he should run. there was miscommunication on the part of all four of them. but right now when you have someone starting a campaign at liberty university the largest christian university in the world, i'd say you send a pretty strong signal. when you tell the story of your family and how jesus saved his two alcoholic parents, you're pretty much saying that god wants me to help save america. >> isn't he also saying if reagan was here and jerry fallwell was still here i'd be there guy? >> he'd love to make that claim. ted cruz spent the last two years in the senate positioning himself for this run. what he's positioned himself for is the heart and minds of the grass roots gop.

those that hate the president, those who believe all of the claptrap about the affordable care act. those that don't believe there's been any climate change ever. and he's hoping that he can shoot the gap here. let jeb bush raise all the money and maybe he can get the hearts of the grass roots and be a factor in iowa. >> mercedes he has a very interesting past. a very interesting family history unlike any other republican candidate. of course nobody else has jumped in yet, but what do you make? does he have a chance here? forget where the polls are now. >> right. >> he's coming to new york to raise money. does he have a shot a being a legitimate candidate? >> i think for ted cruz he has come across being a very

polarizing figure in the republican party. the person who is going to gain that gop nomination is the one who is able to bridge the divide. bring together the social conservatives and libertarians. i just don't think ted cruz will be able to do that. he's going to make a strong case for iowa and south carolina but that's just not going to be enough to pull in for the gop nomination. >> where do you think his problem is going to be? i mean, there's a lot of people that think like ted cruz but he's never been a mender of fences, so to speak. he's not one of these -- he's unapologetic conservative. are there enough of them out there? >> i just don't think so. there are those who stayed home in 2012 and didn't go out and vote for governor romney but i believe you're going to need more than that. you're going to need the military hawks, the social

conserveatives conservatives, the libertarians. new hampshire is a very different makeup than an iowa or south carolina. florida is a stronghold for jeb bush, so i think it is going to be very difficult for him. raising the money, will he be able to raise the 40 or 50 million? considering you have jeb bush and scott walker raising a lot of money and having those donors committed. >> one of these social conservatives writes checks. he wants the people out there to imagine stand up to iran. he has all the republicans on that. he wants to abolish the irs. there's a lot of tax protesters out there. he wants to defend the border. we didn't do anything about immigration unless we defend the border. he wants to protect marriage and he wants to repeal obamacare.

he's cutting a pretty good s.w.a.t.swath right here. what do you think? >> look with that type of agenda, he could win iowa. we haven't seen a lot of success all the time in who wins ayeiowa, but one thing is true. if you win iowa you're more in the game than if you lose iowa. people are going to have to make that decision. do they want to secede this territory to him? >> mike huckabee was ahead of him in the poll just like week and ben carson who is another fringe candidate, can he find a

way to say -- let's go to liberty university. let's make it clear. i, ted cruz am holier than anybody else. that's why he chose the venue. jerry fallwell is dead. people forget what a conservative radical place liberty university was and still is. those people came to the convocation today. if they didn't show up they had to pay a $10 fine. when we looked at social media during and right after this speech today, a lot of millennials don't like the idea that they got to that conference this morning not even knowing in some cases ted cruz was going to be there. they were handed small american flags. they said it sounded like an endorsement. jerry jr., the new president of

liberty university said this is not an endorsement. we'll see about that. >> mercedes let's talk about iowa for a moment. this is the state that has produced joanie ernst. cruz has good communications skills. >> sure. >> he can go up on stage in front of a crowd. he has that moxie about him. this is going to be interesting in iowa. >> it will be interesting in iowa. absolutely. that's the fun part about iowa is they all go -- it is so personal for the iowa primary voter. they really want to be courted. they want to know that these people are coming to their state, winning their vote and it is a personal relationship. but again, it is a crowded field

there's a freeze on funds to pac candidates. earlyier today, hillary clinton shared the stage with two union leaders. >> what do we do to better equip our people to be able to take the jobs and how do we keep middle-class families in cities where they want to stay? they don't want to leave, but they're being priced out. >> every union leader in this country has said the tpp is a direct shot and a threat to the middle class. hillary clinton was flanked by lee sanders and randy winegarden. it would have been the perfect time and setting for hillary clinton to side with labor, but she's on her own schedule. today marked the final two scheduled public appearances on hillary clinton's calendar. it's most likely the last time

we'll hear from clinton before she announced her next steps in early april. let's hope there's a lot of transparency when it comes to trade, jobs, and the middle class. joining me tonight jonathan alter and genevieve woods. >> the unions understand that there are such stark differences between democrats and republicans now. wasn't always the case but now there really are. in the general election between hillary and whoever the republican nominee is they'll be very strong for hillary. it's in the meantime when some of these other candidates they're not going to get money

unless they're against tpp. hillary is going to be bobbing and weaving for a year and a half on this. i was just thinking today. i had a flashback to sitting in george stephanopoulos' office in little rock in president clinton's '92 campaign. george is clinton for nafta or against it? he wouldn't say. >> america has had a hard time convincing the middle class they're on their side. there could be a big divide here in the democratic camp or should i say the commitment from the clintons maybe somewhat short of what is needed for labor. >> somebody may rise up and decide to challenge hillary in

the primary. if they do you will see a tug of war here because folks like elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, they could make her talk about things and take stands that make it a little bit more difficult, especially with the base. look, i think most conservatives think free trade is a good thing. i personally believe it is a good thing. hillary has danced around with whether she's been with free trade. i think hillary clinton is not going to be for right to work laws. she's not going to be somebody who says i don't think union members shouldn't be forced to pay union dues. and i think labor unions care more about that issue than they do these trade agreements. >> i don't know. there's a lot of consternation in the union camps in this country. it is unprecedented that every single union leader in this country is saying no to a trade

deal but what do the conservatives have to do to connect with the economic base where wages have been stagnant and they have not had any progression? >> you would be suggesting that because we're had free trade, that's why we have problems. if you want to look at which -- >> i don't know where you're getting your numbers. there's no trade commission in this country or trade watch group in this country that has said 9 million net new jobs. >> maybe not the ones you're looking at. look at the index of economic freedom. if you want to look at countries, it is not just the u.s. who is doing better in terms of wealth and how well they deal with poverty.

it is countries that have free trade that do the best. those who are the most restrictive are at the bottom of the income ladder. >> we have trade laws in this country that we can't even enforce enforce. it takes over two years to come to fruition because the laws are so archaic at this point. we have emerging markets and labors fighting 27 cents an hour in vietnam. your thoughts on this? has there been good trade deals? >> i'm not going to be able to settle that tonight. it is complex. it is true under bill clinton the economy created 22 million jobs so the idea that nafta. >> the dot-com boom. >> this idea that nafta was a disaster doesn't hold up under

scrutiny, but there are serious questions with tpp. >> you think nafta has been a net job gainer? >> i think figuring it out is something you could write dissertations on. >> we have lost 5 million manufacturing jobs in this country. >> it is way more complicated than that. a lot of them went to asia. they didn't have much to do with nafta. >> they went overseas. that's the bottom line. what about caft arksza? >> there does have to be tougher environmental and workplace protections in these trade deals. you can argue that our government has not driven a tough enough bargain on some of these deals and it is good to have pressure on them told so but that's different from saying they're all just a complete disaster for the country, which is much more complicated. >> we'll have both of you back to talk about this and i'll show

and we are back. real estate tycoon robert durst has been denied bail in louisiana. lawyers are fighting for his extradition. >> i didn't have any hope at all that the judge was going to set a bail bond so we're not surprised by that at all and we'll get a preliminary hearing. >> on friday durst's legal team

questioned the legality of the arrest if in arrest in new orleans. >> his attorneys will demand an immediate preliminary hearing. those charges were filed after police arrested robert durst at this hotel for the murder of his friend. they'll argue that the arrest warrant was issued without probable cause. >> legal experts any delay in transferring durst might help his lawyers. great to have you with us again. as this case unfolds, what do you think the advantage is for the prosecutors here? >> there's going to be a little bit of a battle between

prosecutions prosecutors in los angeles and prosecutors in louisiana. he's charged with weapons violations and drug violations in louisiana. he's charged with murder with special circumstances in california, which could bring the death penalty. i think the defense is going to use all of these proceedings as a vehicle to get information. the defense asked for a preliminary hearing in louisiana because they want to find out what the police are going to say, what the fbi is going to say, what evidence they have. they're going to use it as a discovery advice before he gets sent to california, which will happen. >> how unusual is this? >> it is quite unusual in the sense that he is wanted in different states for different offenses. it is not unusual to arrest someone in another state. because of the high-profile

nature of the case you may have prosecutors in both states who want to get first crack at him. >> does it matter the times of all of this? >> i think it does. there are many ways to look at this. if he were to make a deal in louisiana before he's sent to california they would require him to probably be convicted of some felony. if he went to california and defended himself in the murder with special circumstances case, that felony would likely come in as a way to impeach him. if he sits in louisiana, he may learn more about what people in california are doing because his lawyers are very clever and very smart. it's a fascinating confluence of events. >> as a criminal defense attorney, where would you rather defend him? >> i have not defended a case in

welcome back to "the ed show." a reminder of the segregated south still stands on main street in south carolina. a monument honoring the towns war heros bears plaques that divide soldiers into white and colored. the mayor is fighting to change the plaques, although south carolina law is stuck in the past. >> reporter: on main street an ageing war memorial honors the

fallen from world wars 1 and 2 and vietnam. the plaques for the two world wars list the dead from greenwood as either white or colored which for those seeing it in 2015 can be a shock. >> this is kind of sad. i grew up here but when i see it in black and white, it bothers me. >> reporter: it also bothers deeply the mayor of greenwood, who leads a town that's 42% black. >> the term colored is offensive. it's offensive to me so i can only imagine how it feels to african-americans. >> reporter: arguing they should be honored together mayor adams raised $15,000 to build new plaques with all the dead listed alphabetically, not by race. >> i don't think main street is a place where should be glorifying segregation, but today those plaques still sit in

the mayor's office after he learned a law prevents him from changing it without a 2/3 vote from the state legislature. >> they need to know that at one time the country was not always as welcoming and integrated as it is now for different reasons. >> reporter: floyd nicholson disagrees. >> we have been divided too long. >> reporter: he's introduced a bill to change the plaques honoring the dead. >> i think it is important they be given the same respect. it's not about what race you are. you were willing to fight and give your life for this country. >> reporter: but it is unlikely his bill will pass this year. the mayor is considering a lawsuit against the state demanding the fallen be honored here equally. >> i'm joining tonight by the

mayor of greenwood, south carolina. what is your response to those who say the plaques should stay there and that the monument should stay there because of the historical significance? >> you know my response would be history should be taught in museums and in schools. we're on main street. it's really the center of our commerce, and we don't need to have an offensive word in the middle of our commerce district. >> now, this isn't about politics, is it? this is about respect versus disrespect and times changed. if you had to state why you want this done how would you put it? >> i didn't put the plaques up. the american legion put the plaques up and they have come along and said they want to change it. it is their plaques and they want to change it. this is a group of all white men

who feel like it's time to take this offensive term colored off of our main street, so i'm just supporting their efforts and i'm very appreciative that they can see things change and we need to be progressive. greenwood is a very progressive town. >> what kind of influence do you think they'll have on the legislative session? >> you know in columbia it is hard to have influence if you're in a town like greenwood. we're a good ways away. we're an hour and a half away. our local senator -- >> do your residents want the changed? >> yes. the city overwhelmingly wants this changed. it is the state that is holding us back. >> there is a law that it's a historical monument and the legislature has to make the decision on this although the people that put it there want it changed. where is this going to come

down? >> ed i think our legislature is frightened of anything racially tinted so i didn't think they're going to address it. i think it is going to get stuck in a state committee and never have a full hearing on the floor unfortunately. it would not surprise me at all if it doesn't go further this session. >> this bill that is being brought forward by senator nicholson, is this going right down party lines? >> it seems like it is unfortunately. i have tried to talk to some republican leaders. they hear me and they say, yeah we'll support it and then i don't know what happens to it when it gets in front of them. it doesn't seem to get pushed out of the judiciary committee. >> are there other towns in south carolina that have plaques like this? >> there are some that have these plaques.

i think probably what's different is ours is in our most prominent spot on main street. that's what triggers our response. >> go ahead, i'm sorry. >> national media has come to greenwood before and focused on in this plaque because it is so prominent. they'll show this as an example of a town that hasn't moved forward. >> will you file a lawsuit if this doesn't go anywhere? >> yes. i have talked to post 20 american legion. i talked to their attorney yesterday. they will move forward filing a lawsuit. it's a constitutional right to have freedom of expression, so there's a lot of grounds that we can move forward for this. >> we'll follow the story. appreciate your time tonight on "the ed show." thanks so much. coming up, why scott walkers wants to kill your weekends. i mean it. the punchout is next.

and finally tonight, this is the story for the folks who take a shower after work. democracy, civil rights and labor, they're under attack in wisconsin. well documented. no doubt. governor scott walker signed the right to work bill earlier this month. the state assembly passed the legislation 62-35. after lawmakers debated for 19 hours straight. >> if they don't like the union, they can vote by majority be discertify the union and not be a union. mr. speaker and members, at the end of the day, unions are about the middle class. >> forced union states lost 2.1 million jobs. that's hoefrover a decade. that's convincing. >> the arguments are what they are. do you think the republicans are going to stop there? no way. now the state republicans are trying to repeal weekends. state senator van wonguard and state representative mark born are collaborating on a bill allowing workers to forfeit a

day off voluntarily. wisconsin currently has a law in place saying that workers must have at least 24 consecutive hours of rest in every seven consecutive days worked. well, wisconsin is 40th in the nation in job growth. not good at all. this bill would chip away even further at workers' rights in the state. and there's other news out of wisconsin today. earlier today, the state supreme court declined to hear a challenge of wisconsin's voter identification. civil rights groups wanted the court to take up the case to prove the voter i.d. law disproportionately targets racial minorities, seniors and peoples with disabilities. with us, jennifer epps addison, executive director for wisconsin jobs now. jennifer, tell me how do the workers win on this deal if this legislation goes through? this is worker protection isn't it? >> well, absolutely, and, look, let's be clear. wisconsin ranks ninth out of ten

out of all midwestern states in job creation. and so senator winegaard should be embarrassed he is actually in search of a problem, right? he's going out there to create a problem that serves that corporate agenda. that's exactly what they think they can do under scott walker's leadership. workers are fighting back. they're not demanding an end to their weekend. they're out there demand a fair schedule predictable schedule that allows them to plan for family time, for education or a second job. they're a part of fighting for the fair workweek initiative nationwide. we need to fight back in the streets, not just sit back and allow this corporate agenda to take over our state. >> john this just gives business the upper hand on employees, doesn't it? >> well it does but it also does something else. it really takes apart some of the basic premises of the progress of the last 100 years. what did unions come together

initially to fight for? an eight-hour day, a 40-hour week. yes, pay is important. in fact, it's vital for people to get by. also you want to have some structure that allows people to interact with their family to be a part of their community. and i fear what's happening in wisconsin, and frankly with scott walker i think would like to take to the whole country, is a model where people really define themselves as little more than the employees of some corporation, not as citizens and not as folks who really have a role beyond their workplace. it's a bad turn and it goes way beyond just wages and hours. it really goes to the heart of the extent to which we respect human beings. >> jennifer does it surprise you that walker is polling as good as any of the republican hopefuls right now? i mean they just keep coming at workers in wisconsin. >> well i mean given the field, it doesn't surprise me but i think it's important for folks to know that you shouldn't underestimate scott walker. he plays that corporate line

better than anybody else but also appeals and is willing to appeal to the basic, you know everyday voter. i think what people have to do is again, communicate to friends and family what is actually going on in wisconsin. people aren't going to get it from a tv ad. they're not going to get it from their local news. it's about people taking action going door to door in their communities long before there's ever an election to talk about the economy we need to build and the country we need to build for everybody. john is exactly right. this goes right after the american dream. the idea that you would have a balance between your work life and your family life. we need to restore the american dream by having fair schedules, and by going in the opposite direction of scott walker and his corporate cronies. >> where's this push coming from, john? is this out of the aleck playbook? what is this? do wisconsin residents want this? >> no. there's no outcry for it, and vine wangaard comes from a working class town historic and industrial town. it's been incredibly hard hit by

the bad trade policies promoted by people like paul ryan. we end up in a situation now where all that scott walker and his allies can say to people is look we'll let you work more we can't begin to promise you to create more jobs because we haven't. we can't begin to promise you we're going to get you more wages or better wages because we haven't. what we can say is if you work yourself to the bone if you work seven days a week 60, 70 80 hour maybe you can scrape by. >> well, why is -- >> nobody in wisconsin is asking for that. >> why is the state 40th in job growth jennifer? >> i mean i think there's a lot of things but certainly governor walker's refusal to consider raising the minimum wage even by a single penny has a lot to do with our stagnation and job growth. you have to understand the majority of jobs created in wisconsin and across the country since the great recession are low pay service-sector work. when the workers don't have

enough money in their pocket, our economy isn't going to grow. >> the state supreme court not considering the challenge to the voter i.d. >> well, i think it's upsetting. certainly we need to demand that voter i.d. isn't in place for the april election this coming april. it means that person to person neighbor to neighbor outreach needs to start now. we can't wait for a paid election staff. we got to get out there as individuals, as citizens and talk to our community and get them ready and prepared to participate in their democracy. >> john, did you think they were going to take it up? >> i'm afraid i didn't necessarily expect that they would, but i'm very saddened by it because, remember that wisconsin has a long and rich tradition of making it easy to vote. that's why wisconsin often leads the country in voter turnout. >> yeah. >> now we see a situation where other state, like oregon are moving very rapidly to make it easier to vote wisconsin's going in the wrong direction. i find it very troubling and especially as jennifer points
