flyer was "a bit blunt." considering that there was an undetonated 1,000 pound nazi bomb in the neighborhood, i declare that the cops can be excused for bluntness. good morning. right now on "first look," breaking details coming in to nbc news on that black box from the downed germanwings plane crash that claimed 150 lives. two passengers aboard a bus who narrowly escaped as the motor coach is swallowed up by a massive crater and washed away in rushing water. and to a 10-year-old world record holder with a drive to win unlike any other. good morning, i'm angie goff. moments ago search efforts resumed in southern france for bodies an debris from a passenger jet that crashed in the alps yesterday. police officials tell nbc news there are 100 national police and 150 firefighters involved. nbc's bill neely brings us up to the min nut.

the remains of a crashed plane. here and there, rescuers. but there was no one left alive to rescue. the airbus with 150 people on board had simply disintegrated on impact. searchers though did find the cockpit voice recorder. this was the doomed aircraft operated by the low cost airline germanwings. flight 9525 took off from barcelona at 10:00 climbing normally to a cruiseing altitude of 38,000 feet at 10:27. minutes later it began an unexplained descent over the alps. for eight minutes the pilots sent no distress signal. flight radar 24 says it lost contact with the plane which had dropped more than 30,000 feet at 10:40. i heard the noise of the impact this man says. then we saw smoke and thought the flight must have crashed.

on board were 144 passengers two pilots and four flight crew. among them at least 67 passengers from germany and 45 from spain. helicopters and hundreds of searchers have moved close to the crash site. their priority recovering bodies and the second flight recorder. neither weather nor terrorism is being blamed but for now, nothing explains why the plane fell so far so fast with such terrible consequences. bim neely, nbc news, san les al france. >> they say the black box they found is damaged but could still be used for investigation. investigators are scheduled to update us at 11:00 a.m. eastern. we want to bring in nbc's katy tur in germany. we're learning more about some of the people on that plane including some students. >> reporter: yes angie.

a lot of them were students 16 students and two teachers from this school. it's a pretty somber day. kids came to class. there was no technical class today. they were having counseling sessions and a big meeting within the school auditorium to try and help them cope with what the loss means and how it all happened although no one is quite sure how this plane went down at this point. but they're trying to help these students deal with the loss right now. there's about 1200 kids here so 16 students is a pretty big number to lose for a high school. you see them walking in the halls even if you don't know them. we spoke with a number of kids last night who say they feel an overwhelming sense of loss and this school feels hempity now. >> she looked forward to meet the others again. but on the other side she was also, i think, really happy to go home. >> it hurts so much. >> reporter: how is the school

feeling right now? >> empty. >> nobody could believe it really. it's true but you don't want to understand it. >> reporter: these kids were all in a class trip an exchange program from their spanish class to a school outside barcelona. they spent a week there. for many they say it was the highlight of their year something they were looking forward to. the school has done this with this spanish school done exchange programs back and forth now. for this to happen is such a shock to the system for the people here. angie? >> so much hurt in that community, thank you, katy. now to brazil and a scary scene all caught on camera. a massive crater suddenly opens up in the road. check that out. a bus just inches away from it starts to sink. the people on board there jumping off. watch, though. within minutes the bus tips back in and disappears. then the camera as it starts to

pan left the bus reappears quickly as it's swept away down the river. the road was closed immediately so it could be repaired. congress demanding answers from the secret service after two agents were accused of drinking and driving into a barrier during a bomb investigation earlier this month. director joseph clancy was called to testify about the incident before a house committee yesterday. house oversight committee members want to hear from the agents, but that hasn't happened. clancy testified he didn't know anything about the incident until he was alerted by an anonymous e-mail. congressman elijah cummings became infuriated during this hearing. >> i kept reading this e-mail this morning over and over and over. you know what i concluded? it appears that we have an agency at war against itself. the idea that in an organization like this that somebody would create this kind of document to

bring this kind of disruption when they are supposed to be guarding the president of the united states of america -- >> last week clancy acknowledged that some of the video of the incident had been recorded over committee chairman jason chav vits expressed his disapproval. >> these agents placed themselves, their colleagues, the president and his family in potential danger by driving their government vehicle through a barrier within feet of a potential bomb. under secret service policy video footage of the incident should have been retained. however, most of the footage, evidently, according to the secret service has mysteriously gone missing. i find this highly suspicious. >> during the hearing, director clancy said he quote, doesn't have a magic wand to fix the problems inside the agency but he does plan on holding people accountable. president obama has promised an end to america's longest war, but it may come slower than

expected. after meeting with the president of afghanistan yesterday, president obama confirmed that about 10,000 u.s. forces will stay in afghanistan for the rest of the year. the president said afghanistan remains a dangerous place and he doesn't want to go back to battle terrorists in the future. nbc's tracie potts has more. >> reporter: afghanistan's new president ashraf ghani will tell congress today why he wants u.s. troops to stay. >> we are going to have a tough year. we probably will have several tough years. >> reporter: there's already trouble. new today, word that a u.s. drone strike killed 11 taliban militants near the border with pakistan. more extremists are expected to rise up this spring. president obama has agreed to leave nearly 10,000 troops there this year but stick to the full pullout by the end of 2016. >> we want to be sure we're doing everything we can to help afghan security forces succeed so we don't have to go back.

welcome back to "first look," busy weather day in the middle of the country. last night we saw hail in missouri and today we could deal with tornadoes in the midwest. that storm system currently from

yesterday bringing snow up to wisconsin. a wet drive across northern indiana, northern ohio and into areas of michigan. as far as today is going to go, we are going to see the potential of severe weather out there. the worst of the severe storms will be to the south. the area in yellow is a slight risk, from dallas ft. worth into missouri. the area of potential tornadoes is further to the north here talking oklahoma city tulsa, fayetteville back towards the springfield and joplin area. it's not going to be a widespread outbreak but there will be strong storms. the timing of that is right around 6:00 p.m. until about 10:00 p.m. this evening. that's where the worst of the weather will be. hopefully they'll all be misses and not hits. >> spring storm season is upon us. not so fast for a potentially historic buy partisan agreement in congress. house speaker john boehner and minority leader nancy pelosi

even as the president is describing the relationship as businesslike and professional and not doing things in terms of personal, we see what appears to be leaks in newspapers about israel spying on the u.s. and using information -- on the iranian negotiations and using the information to talk to congress. that's not exactly what the u.s. government usually does, doesn't leak on what it knows about israel spying. >> it's a story, also that the white house seems to be distancing themselves from. >> it's something they don't want to be a part of. it seems pretty clear where this is coming from. >> a story on politico this morning, a new report out that says the deputy secretary of homeland security showed some favoritism towards hillary rodham clinton's brother as well as virginia governor terry mcauliffe. is this a story that will have some legs? >> i think it will have a little bit of legs. the biggest is the number two at homeland security alley may or cuss.
