during the crash of that german airliner yesterday. we have more on that story coming up right now on "first look." >> good morning. right now on "first look" one fatality is reported with a tornado season starting. was one pilot locked out of the cockpit with the germanwings plane crash that claimed 150 lives? deserting his post in taliban cabtivity and now facing life in prison. that and more as "first look" starts. >> good morning. right now tornado outbreaks, severe weather shredding parts of oklahoma. >> there it is. tornado on the ground. west of sand springs about five miles. >> this tornado touching down at a mobile home park just outside of tulsa. more than 50 homes flattened in

seconds. one person was killed. several orethers were hurt and -- >> it's about to go down a main street. >> the dark sky erupting and power transformers erupting. more than 70,000 are without power in the state. ripping trees out from the ground. it was just enough damage to cancel classes cede but a stark contrast to the twister that decimated more back in 2013. near tulsa's airports as tornado sirens blard, people sought shelter in the basement. wednesday's storm strike also brought heavy rain and golf ball size hail. is the severe weather over? our meteorologist has the answer

in just a few minutes. now to the germanwings crash and a new report from the new york times which says one of the plane's pilots was locked out of the cockpit during the crash. this is what the mangled recovered audio picked up. a very smooth cool conversation to start then and indication that one of the pilots got out and left the cockpit but could not reenter. light knocks are heard with no answer and then stronger to the point where the source says, quote, you can hear he is trying to smash the door down but still no answer. today relatives of the dead will begin arriving at the crash site. >> reporter: the plane is bearly identifiable. some windows here. a tire there. the wings and cockpit in a thousand pieces. the voices recorded in the cockpit on a damaged black box

having analyzed but investigators say they still don't know what caused the crash. the second flight recorder's casing has been found but not the contents. the names of many on board have emerged. three americans died. emily se lke ye and her mother yvonne. we discovered access of the remote site is almost impossible. the snow and ice and the mountain sides aren't stable for searchers or anyone. this is dangerous. this operation to first find and then recover bodies and debris won't just take days. it'll take weeks. >> reporter: the fact that that flight crash crashed into a mountain could be compelling

evidence that the someone was incapacitated. it has a warning system that tells pilots to pull up if there is trouble ahead. they never attempted to avoid the mountain. french investigators are now analyzing the sounds and voices recovered from the cockpit voice recorder but they need the flight data recorder to unravel what happened to the plane and in the dock fit. it could take weeks. we don't know if they programmed the feet to descend. if so they didn't they program an end to the decent and why didn't they respond to radio controls. they say both pilots were experienced. the plane passed a maintenance check on monday and another captain who flew the plane on monday said it performed perfectly. >> thanks for those reports. now to a reporter in dusseldorf.

good morning. >> a plane, a charter plane with family members here in dusseldorf left just a few minutes ago as well as a charter plane from spain. both headed to marseilles france with family members on board. they were charter flights and they're going to allow those family members to get as close as they can to the crash site. they cannot go to the crash site itself right now because it's only accessible by helicopter. you can see by the pictures how complicated the area is. we haven't been able to get any access to family members so far. the airline has been keeping them under lock and key, holding them close by in private rooms here at the airport in dusseldorf and in spain and giving them information as they go. with this news about these pilots and this new york times report about one pilot being locked out, you would imagine the good will between the passengers and the airline might

be coming to an end. and there might be some disfaction with what's been going on with them. here in dusseldorf a lot of mourning, and we were at a school as you've seen an hour north of here and everybody where they lost 18 ebbs andmembers, and everybody is wondering why. an answer they don't have yet. >> thanks so much. two important updates for you in the middle east. first from yemen. a country on the brink of civil war. saudi arabia is now leading a coalition in bombing houthi rebel targets contributing 100 war planes and 150,000 soldiers. it's in support of the u.s. backed president who's reportedly fled the country and in iraq the u.s. begins air strikes targeting the city of tikrit diving into an ongoing offensive to retake the city.

here's where it gets interesting. the ground assault is being led by iraqi forces with the help of shiite forces. while they're on the opposite side in the yemen conflict they're on the same side there. >> a man is now facing the important of life in a u.s. military prison. what began in 2009 with a disappearance from a base in afghanistan as now turned into the u.s. army formally charging him with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. tracie potts has more from washington. >> reporter: in a statement he says he tried to escape the taliban a dozen times but each time, he was caught and beaten. he details brutal treatment over five years, little food and regular beatings but it's what he did before being captured

this is our first major storm system of the system we're looking at and it's eight tornadoes in oklahoma and arkansas. tulsa being one of the biggest ones that were hit. we had one fatality with that. the cold front is marching off to the east. the severe weather threat is coming to an end. that cold front is going to continue to push to the east. and that will create scattered showers and thunderstorms up and down the east coast for today. it will be rainy but warm until the front makes its way through. 62 today in new york. it does get much cooler once that front passes by. temperatures will be back in the 50s by tomorrow. >> that sounds great. thank you. at the boston bombing trial wednesday prosecutors focussed on how the brothers built the bombs that killed three people and hurt hundreds at the boston marathon in 2013. jurors were shown pressure cooker parts and a piece of fuse that were found in the brother's

the headlines germanwings pilot was locked out of cockpit before crash in france. the times details what the cockpit voice recorder captured in the final moments before the jet crashed. the official describes hearing a very smooth very cool conversation between the pilots during the early part of the flight before there is an indication that one of the pilots left the cockpit and could not reenter. the investigator says quote, the guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer. then the source describes hearing louder knocks saying quote, you can hear he is trying to smash the door down but still no answer. the official goes onto say, coat, we don't know yet the reason why one went out but what is sure at the end of the flight the other pilot is alone and does not open the door. joining us now. faa licensed dmer shl pilot, the founder
