ordinary person. fascinating, isn't it? >> good morning. it's thursday april 16th. welcome to "way too early." i'm luke russert in washington d.c. we begin here in d.c. in the security scare that temporarily shut down capitol hill. a mailman hoping to deliver a message to congress is now in custody after landing a small aircraft on the west lawn. this time there are questions that the capitol police and secret service new in advance. we have more. >> reporter: we're basically standing in the flight path have the copter came down the national mall before landing there basically at the foot of the capitol. it was intended to spark a conversation about campaign finance reform but this stunt instead has raised a new discussion about the state of homeland security. >> this is not good, people. >> reporter: coming in for a landing. doug hughes on board a

continuer. >> everyone was shouting move. get down. >> reporter: the 61-year-old mailman was looking to deliver a message to washington demanding an end to government corruption. he was carrying 535 letters. it was a daring act of civil disso bead yens that is also a crime. he alerted the tampa bay times last year. he acknowledged the risk to his safety. >> i don't believe that the authorities are going to shoot down a 60-year-old mailman in a flying bicycle. >> he insisted he was not a terrorist. >> terrorists don't broadcast their flight path. terrorists don't invite an escort to go along with them. >> reporter: he told the paper he took off from pennsylvania an hour away rounding the washington monument, giving him a clearer view of the white

house before landing. >> i thought he'd be brought down or forced down somewhere before this. >> reporter: it's the latest in a string of security breaches. after arresting hughes they found nothing hazards on board. >> the capitol police are going to have to regroup and the air space in the district everybody who's in charge of that has to regroup. police helicopters should have been forcing this guy down before he ever reached the capitol. >> reporter: after blogging about his plans, the secret service reportedly interviewed him in florida. he live streamed his flight but it's not clear whether law enforcement was aware of it before he got here. >> reporter: he's expected to make his first court appearance here in washington. he said no sane person would do what i'm doing. luke. >> indeed. thank you so much for that report. turning now to iowa where hillary clinton wrapped up the

first spaincampaign. she visited a processing plant and during a round table she continued to paint with broad strokes emphasizing her feedback first approach. >> in this campaign i will be offering specific ideas about how to help small businesses how to jump start them how to grow them. but i need to hear from you, because what are the skills you need? who are the people you're trying to recruit and what are the challenges that you are facing? >> i'll have a lot more to say about this as the campaign goes forward, but before i roll out my policies i want to hear from people who are on the front lines. >> details later. the most specific announcement came in the form of a statement clarifying her views on same sax major. it reads hillary clinton supports the major equality and hopes the supreme court will

come down on the side of same sex couple. she said they should be decided state by state before. the announcement prompted a swift response from former maryland governor who released this ad just hours after the clinton campaign released its ad. >> prothe dignity of every person tells us that the right to mary is not a state right. it is a human right. >> clinton will head to new hampshire next where chris christie appeared on wednesday. christy's last day got off to somewhat of a rocky start as he visited a manchester diner where people met him with jokes and

jabs about his reputation. >> i was in that traffic jam. >> how did it go? not well? >> ouch. according to "the new york times," one customer asked him what happened to tony spran know in the last episode of the hit hbo series. another said that when he had heard he was coming he made sure that the all the bridges were open. later on it was chris christie on the attack at a town hall event and in a sit down interview with our own matt lauer. >> i saw, read somewhere today that hillary clinton said she intends to raise 2.5 billion for her campaigns but she then wants to get corruption out of politicians. >> she's a foregone conclusion it seems on the democratic side. >> she was one in 2007.

we've had lots of foregone conclusions in american politics. who do you see that could jump up and derail her? >> i don't know. barack obama was down 30 points at this time to hillary clinton. it's about performance. >> he didn't just go after the democratic front runner. he had this to say about jeb bush during another interview on wednesday. >> do you agree with the bush record? do you think the approach tracks with your own approach or is it different? >> i'd like to see what jeb bush has to say about these things. he has a father and a brother with a record and i don't know what jeb bush is going to say about foreign policy. the one speech he's given so far has been rather general. let's see what he's got to say for himself. if i decide to run for president, you can conclude it's because i think i would be a

better president than anybody else who decided to run. >> the stunning fall from grace for former nfl star aaron hernandez is complete this morning. the former tight end for the new england patriots is looking at life behind bars after being convicted of murder. >> reporter: after a two-month trial, a dramatic end for the future of one of the nfl's most promising stars, aaron hernandez. >> guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: his mother and fiance wiped away tiersears as did the family of odin lloyd. he was found shot six times in a field a half mile from aaron hernandez's home. >> i forgive the hands of people

who had a hand in my son's murder either before or after. and i pray and hope that some day everyone out there will forgive them also. >> reporter: the case against him was largely sirj. the murder weapon never recovered. but prosecutors had surveillance video that appeared to show him holding a gun the flight lloyd was killed as well as dna and physical evidence putting him at the scene. >> the jury found that he was just a man who committed a brutal murder. the fact that he was a professional athlete meant nothing in the end. >> reporter: jurors heard from more than 130 witnesses. >> we followed the court's orders. we assumed he was innocent until the prosecution proved him guilty. that's what happened. >> his career was looking up when he was arrested. a $40 million contract in hand. but off the field, troubles.

>> he lived a secret double life. he was a very good football player but when he went home he lived a secret life. >> reporter: he was immediately transported to his new home. a maximum security prison. this is not the last courtroom he will see. later this year he is expected to stand trial for double murder up in boston. stemming from a 2012 drive bishooting. she's pleaded not guilty -- he's pleaded not guilty in that case. >> thank you so much for that report. now to business. all eyes were on europe yesterday where a bizarre incident took place in jeremy when a protester attacked the head of the european bank. here in the u.s. stocks rose for a second straight day with the dow finishing up nearly

76 points. and a federal judge ruled gm will be shielded from ignition switches. we are joined from london. you think that's probably a huge win for gm. >> absolutely. if you are a gm shareholder, you're looking at this bankruptcy judge's finding and you're rubbing your hands here. so what we've heard from the judge is that yes, gm can be shielded because of the bankruptcy from potentially billions of dollars of lawsuits related to this ignition switch issue. good news for shareholders. perhaps not so much for those who are looking at litigation against gm at this point. it is worth pointing out, of course, that gm has set up a fund with mr. fineburg which is focussed on compensation payouts to those who feel they have been

injured as a result of the ignition switch issue. moving you on and it's a theme this morning we're talking compensation claims. of course the 2010 oil spill by bp still very much a live story and bp coming out and saying they have paid around $5 billion so far out in compensation payments to some 62,000 claimants. it looks according to their own figures as though this will rise to near $10 billion before it's done here. a couple of interesting stories to keep your eye on as far as the markets are concerned. >> in some big numbers in our industry j netflix, i was reading this. first quarter earnings report, they did a lot better than they thought they were going to do internally. what do we know about the future of tv? it's profitable at netflix. >> this is fascinating.

i don't know whether your a big house of cards fan. the critics didn't really like series three even as netflix numbers suggest that they've had very strong viewing figures for house of cards three. netflix is an interesting one. controversial with investors. the numbers came in light of the expectations. they delivered way off the $0.69 a share the market was looking for. the fact they said that was down to ethics-related losses bought them a buy with the shareholders and in fact in the afterhours session, the shares rose 12%. right now i think investors in the market giving them the benefit of the doubt. we'll have to see how house of cards three pans out at this point. back to you. >> thank you so much. we appreciate it. still ahead, a-rod's home run puts a record in jeopardy and a
