survivor told police there had been 950 people on board. and now it could become the largest migrant problem in history. we have more. >> reporter: far from italy some 60 miles north of the libyan coast, rescuers are searching for survivors. a few dozen found but hundreds still missing. when migrants spotted this cargo ship late saturday night survivors say they rushed to one's side capsizing their overloaded boat. italian prime minister blamed the tragedy on human traffickers saying we can't let people be at their mercy. italy is struggling to cope with a flood of migrants and war refugees setting off from libya with dozens of rescues last week. many of those migrants are reliving their fears. >> before the rescue comes, many

boats are capsizing because it is overloaded. >> reporter: the pope said such tragedies must not be repeated. they are men and women like us he said wounded, exploited, victims of war. the human toll is staggering. 10,000 rescued last week. more than 30,000 this year. an estimated 500,000 waiting to cross. many are fleeing conflicts in the middle east and africa paying thousands of dollars for a trip that could cost them their lives. more than 1500 lost at sea this year. >> we have seen over the past year a growing number of families arriving a growing numb of women, children 8,000 were children unaccompanied. >> reporter: there's no easy answer. italy has sentenced nearly 1,000 human traffickers yet refugees are still coming. >> this morning there are disturbing new details emerging

some beheaded. some shot. isis is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed at least 35 people. if confirmed this would be the first major attack by isis in afghanistan and the worst attack in the country this year. meanwhile the united nations is warning of a humanitarian crisis in iraq. at least 90,000 people have been displaced in the last several days because of the violence. the mayor of baltimore, maryland is urging calm after a man died in police custody. he allegedly suffered spinal injury while being arrested. this is cell phone video that caught part of the incident. he is seen talking and barely able to walk as officers put him inside the police van. police say they arrested him after he fled from an area known for drug dealing. a couple of blocks later the van stopped and a witness says he was taken out and put on the

ankle where police shackled his ankles. now the question is what happened when the cam can ra was not rolling. they say his neck was severed and he went into a coma and died. the mayor vows to get to the bottom of what happened but the family's lawyer is skeptical. >> all we get when we represent people who are brutalized by police is we're sorry. they're not sorry because it's your actions that describe how you feel about it if you're a city official, not your words. we're tired of the words and we want action. we want to see fair compensation for victims of police brutality and a fair response with an impartial investigation, not the cops investigating themselves. baltimore officials are promising a transparent investigation. four officers have been placed

on leave so far. the mayor was asked about the investigation. she is going to join "morning joe" for a live interview this morning. >> turning to tulsa, oklahoma the reserve sheriff's department mistook his gun for his taker before shooting an unarmed suspect. there are new developments as lawyers have released the train training and records. that comes as a loved one of one of the victims speaks out for the first time in an interview. >> reporter: in tulsa, pressure is mounting. >> look around us. people are here. and they want answers. >> reporter: after the april second shooting at the time of erik harris by a reserve department captured on a body camera. >> i shot him. i'm sorry. >> it's hurtful to see how he was treated. >> reporter: the mother of harris's 16-year-old son, this is the first time she's spoken

at least one taser class. his evaluations say he had a good working relationship with super visors and other departments and related well to the public. but that he had problems with using a police radio and geography. a spoke's person says the sheriff's office is still searching for more paperwork. the family insists he was well-trained. >> he is better trained or has more qualifications and more training than some of the departments in cities across the united states. that is something he prides himself on. >> let's turn to business now. u.s. stocks hoping to climb back from where they were on friday when when the market closed. the s&p down. the wall street jitters may be intensifying amid growing concern of greece being on the brink of the bankruptcy. we are live from london. international finance ministers came together for meetings on

the global economy. what progress was made if any? >> reporter: if there aren't enough things to worry about in life, the finance ministers didn't do us any favors of this imf meeting in washington. minister after minister turned up to stay greece remains the big headline threat as far as the world economy is concerned including jack lou, of course, the secretary of the treasury who came out and said if greece defaults on its obligations there will be hardship for the greece and a problem for the world economy going forward. i have to say there are those economists who think that a lot of the greek threat has now been ring-fenced by the european central bank. it's just worth bearing in mind that the ministers are highlighting this issue as one potential threat for the economy rolling forward. i suspect we might see a pickup in the equity session today.

here in europe we're mostly in the green. some of that a bounceback from the strong selloff on friday. that was in part in the crashing of the bloomberg terminals. the story around target i think is fascinating. we talk about retail sales in the united states but for those who wanted to get their hands on the brightly colored designs of lily pulitzer oorks target's shelves were sold out and huge traffic on their website as shoppers wanted to get their hands on these designs. targets say they will be replenishing their stock, but they're take a bit of a beating on the internet as people expressed their frustration about not being able to complete their purchase. i'm not sure whether this has backfired for them. we'll have to wait an watch. a lot of angry people on the
