d and chris hayes for joining us from baltimore. up next, msnbc's coverage of the events in baltimore tonight continues. as. break news right now. i'm betty nguyen thank you for joining us. the overnight curfew is ending as we speak. the cover of the baltimore sun says unsettled peace. last night in the wake of calm -- it was tense but not violent. and members of the community called for peace. >> do not disrespect us and break things. okay. leave the officers alone. >> our correspondents on the ground say it became quiet with humvees rolling through the

empty streets. yesterday, president obama condemned the violence and looting but says this is not a new problem. >> this has been going on for a long time. this is not new and we shouldn't pretend that it's new. >> good morning to you, tracie. we understand schools will be open today. >> reporter: yeah they're trying to get back to normal. and the orioles are playing, although in an empty stadium without the public. and around the downtown area it's very quiet and been fairly calm overnight. there are local police and national guard officers all over this area. baltimore police say there was relative calm on the first night of the curfew less than a dozen arrests compared to monday.

>> wie do not have a lot of movement throughout the city. >> reporter: officers in riot gear cleared the streets with smoke cansters and urged protesters to move back. >> we don't want anyone else we don't want anyone shooting we don't want anything. we want a ceasefire. >> reporter: freddy gray suffered a severed spine while in custody and demonstrators are demanding accountability. >> we need to listen to our children because this is without a doubt the civil rights cause for this generation. >> reporter: baltimore fairly quiet this morning, but still a city on edge bursting with frustration and waiting for answers. that curfew continues every night through monday but it looks like we can expect more

demonstrations. we saw a this flyer on cars in the area. another rally cry. >> and live from the ball park. the orioles have made an unprecedented decision. >> reporter: that's right, betty. at this point, the orioles game is scheduled to go on this afternoon but there won't be any fans. it's become something of an iconic stadium and inspired lots of other designed for stadiums but this will be the first time anyone can remember that game like this would be play would no fans in the crowd. mlb officials say that decision was made in consultation with the city. they don't want to draw anything away from other way areas. but the nation's newspaper with

this head line, there were discussions about moving it to national park in washington 40 minutes down the road and going ahead and playing the game and having faith that baltimore citizens are going to stay peaceful and at this point, that's the decision who knows if it will change throughout the course of the day but as of now, only media will be allow underinside the stadium for the game. and peaceful protesters say their message is being drowned out. >> the peaceful protests aren't being heard. nobody wants to report on that and a lot of times we tell our children to be peaceful and if that's not getting a response and the only time they get a response is when violence occurs

early morning for miami and all the way down to the keys. and i know round fort lauderdale we have a flood advisory in effect. so definitely ponding of water. and the rest of the southeast is not as bad. we do have rain in areas of georgia. everybody is going to see a pretty decent wednesday. and finally, some nice mild air into areas of new england. still that cool rain down in atlanta but st. louis, oklahoma city, so nice. we will bring some of that rain that's now in the southeast to the midatlantic tomorrow. so enjoy that lunch outside for raleigh, richmond and d.c. because day is the best day of the week.

all right. so we have seen a lot of images and video coming out of baltimore following the intense rit rioting in the city but maybe getting the most attention is this mother laying down the law and there has been strong reaction. >> reporter: spotted in the middle of a protest, she forces him back tries to rip off his mask while screaming at him. baltimore's police chief commended her. >> you saw one mother grabbing her child and smack him on the head because she was so embarrassed. >> reporter: the video has gone viral and on the streets, many are calling her a hero. was she right or wrong? >> right. >> reporter: if your son were old enough to be in the street

rioting and you saw him, what would you do? >> the same thing that mother did because his life could have been saved. >> my mom probably would have done the same thing. >> reporter: but others disagree. >> wow, i mean they said go and get it children but they didn't say go and cuss them out and beat them up. >> reporter: in a community torn apart, neighbors hold on to each other praying for answers and a peaceful night. >> some of the stories we are following for you right now, california governor jerry brown is upping the ante and proposish $10,000 fines for residents and businesses that waste the most water. and take a look at this a bear foot man chasing a camel down a busy highway. it happened in the united arab emirates.
