wednesday, april 29th. welcome to "way too early." we begin in baltimore, just 30 minutes removed from a city wide curfew and it appears to be a much calmer erer city. and the schools will reopen after the worst rioting since 1968. and fewer than a dozen arrests reported as police clash with people while trying to find those violating the curfew. >> mr. comings, we're live on nbc news. k tell us what you're trying to say to these young men to send them home. wait wait, wait.

calm down. everyone calm down. the police are banging their batons against their shields. people are running in different direction. the police are advancing and moving forward very slowly trying to clear out this intersection. >> but overall, those were isolated instances compared to monday evening. the governor ordered national guardsman to tour the street tonight. how are things on the ground from your vantage point overnight? >> reporter: right now, we're in front of city hall and things are pretty calm and it seems for the most part the curfew worked out. there was a problem with a few people trying to get them to go home after 10:00 p.m. but for the most part, the curfew has

worked out throughout the night. >> we've seen a lot of video of residents trying to take back their community and cleaning up the streets. what have you learned in that aspect? >> reporter: we've seen a lot of people trying to clean up immediately throughout the day yesterday, people cleaning up at pennsylvania and north. and i heard reports of students not in school yesterday working with their principals to try to clean up the city. there are lot of people saying the correct baltimore is not being shown and they want to show the correct baltimore in front of the television cameras. so they're doing the best they can to threat best face of baltimore be seen. there were a lot of people from the bloods gang and we also saw people from the crips gang who said they want to see peace and they said that they wanted to try to enforce peace in the city. i speak to one of them, niko

caldwell. how far are you willing to go to make sure it's peaceful? >> we were keeping the peace all day. we're blocking people who throw bottles at police officers and making lines and grabbing the persons that are involved. >> reporter: there were reports that bloods and crips were out to get the cops last night is that true? >> no that is definitely not true. we don't want any problems with the police we don't want anyone shooting. we don't want a ceasefire. we were not the cause. we were the same ones for tect ss protecting this neighborhood. >> reporter: and i know for some people the bloods and crips trying to create peace may seem shocking but they say they

stopped problems at the mall and stopped problemeds that would have started. i did see folks who we were able to identify as the blood gang and throwing bottles and bricks that police. so we saw a little bit of both from that group. >> i think the real question is what does the leadership in baltimore do once the glare is not so much on their city. that is where the real work begins. and we'll be catching him on the cycle at tlie3:00. and we'll go back to baltimore for a look that unusual orioles game. and residents try to reclaim their city. after the worst riots in nearly half a century. one scene that was clearly on display, the store that went up

in flames and someone sliced holes in the firehouse and those cleaning up said they hope others follow their lead. >> i am here because i couldn't stand what i saw out here. and i was on social media and wasn't doing anything by attacking it that way. i wanted to be here and be part of the solution. >> reporter: what do you think about this crowd that showed up here? >> this is beautiful. this is baltimore and this is the way i want the city represented. >> if these kids come back we need to be out here to show them that this is not what we stand for. we do not. this is not what we represent as baltimore and these kids are lost and they need some help. >> reporter: there was also a touching seen as some of the

85,000 children who didn't have school hit the streets to do their part. >> i didn't want it to look a mess. i want it to look like it never burnt down and i want them to rebuild it so it can look the way it did. >> and president obama spoke about the slow rolling crisis. >> the good news is that perhaps there's some new found awareness because of social media and video cameras and so forth that there are problems and challenges when it comes to how policing and our laws are applied in certain communities and we have to pay attention to it and respond. we can't just leave this to the police. i think there are police departments that have to do some soul searching. i think there are some

communities that have to do soul searching and we as a country have to do somesoul soul searching. this is not new. this has been going on for decades. if we think we're going to send the police to do the dirty work of containing the problems that arise there without us as a nation saying what can we do to help uplift those communities and give those kids opportunity, then we're not going to solve the problem. if we're serious about solving the problem, we're not only going to have to help the police but say, what do we need do. >> and baltimore officials expect city police to turn over their results by this friday may first, allowing prosecutors to decide whether charges should be fired.

and mayor was empthetic that it would take the state's attorney much more time to reach a decision. >> she certainly won't be able to in the same day she gets the information, make a determ nagds about whether or not there will be charges and we want to make sure the people understand the process and we want to do more than just seek justice, we want to have justice and in order to do that, we have to respect the process. >> police commissioner said the investigation is likely to continue beyond friday's report to the state attorney. and a mixed day on wall street tuesday with the dou and snp rising. but much of tuesday's volatility was caused by twitter after leaked earnings caused the stock's price to plummet. tell us what happened and how bad is this for twitter and the

little blue bird? >> hey, luke i think i'm going to need more than 140 characters to tell you why this was a disaster. the revenues down they missed the target. i mean they made decent mun aoney but didn't hit the numbers. the leak didn't help and you know what we ened up with a freeze initially in the selling of the stock, then when the freeze came off on the market boom, big down side as far as twitter stock is concerned and before it was all done and dusted the stock was down. and there was slightly puzzling trends in here as well. and we did see an 18% jump in affect users which takes the active number to just over three million here.

and if you compare them to other social network sites. and what's app came in at 800 million, so twitter has some work to do and questions to whether the click through ads are really delivering for the advertisers. so i think more work needed as far as twitter is concerned and the little blue bird looking ruffled. we have the fmoc meeting and learn how the fed feels about the economy. most people not expecting significant change for interest rates in april. but watch out for any news on the june meeting. and we get a first look at first quarter gdp. anything weeker than that might cause nerves to break out in the trading pits. back to you.

. the baltimore orioles will play their game against the chicago white sox but no fans will be in the stands to see it. it's the first major league baseball game in history to be played without a paying crowd. they added that their three game series will now be played in florida instead of baltimore. the commissioner's office said after conversations with the orioles and local officials, we believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fans safety and resources. and fans that attended last saturday's game were asked to stay in the ball park after it ended. and it has drawn criticism.

it's imposed on them by the courts. >> reporter: and states say it encourages opposite sex couples to get married and have kids. >> you're not take away anything from het row sexual couples. they would have the very same incentive to marry, all the same benefits that they do now. >> it's hard to see how permitting same-sex marriage discouraged people from being bonded from their biological children. >> justice kennedy likely to be the deciding vote. he said allowing gay couples to marry gives them respect. >> same sex couples say, of course we understand the mobility and sacredness of the marriage and we know we can't proekriate but we want the other
