political correspondent kasie hunt. kasie, let's talk about the strategy for governor huckabee this time around after he had pretty decent success his last run, eight wins in eight primaries, i believe the number is. >> reporter: tamron good morning. yes, well i think what we've seen on the ground here in hope arkansas, so far shows you why governor huckabee was so popular. he was so well liked here. he's got, you know friends going back to kindergarten who remember playing in band with him and it's that sort of down home charm that led him to win, starting in iowa both contests in 2008 forgive me we're getting started here with the national anthem. but the question of course for him is going to be whether or not he can make it in a much more crowded field on the christian evangelical front. that, of course is something that -- forgive me that's not the national anthem. we're expecting tony orlando to do a performance behind me. there you go. again, i think that those
8:01 am
evangelical voters you know there's a ton of them you listed several of them there, there's so many more candidates that are potentially going to compete in that space, and i think the big question is whether or not they are looking instead for a newer face. you know they know huckabee as somebody that's been on the team for a while, do they want ted cruz rand paul someone newer instead? >> absolutely, and it's also interesting where we're seeing some of the money that is already being put into the equation. nbc news confirmed club for growth is spending $100,000 hitting huckabee in iowa and south carolina. >> tamron that's right, and club for growth is interesting, they don't like mike huckabee's record on taxes, they say he raised the sales tax, tax on cigarettes, on gasoline and made it a personal mission to go after him. huckabee in many ways has run as a populist.
8:02 am
he talked about his blue collar roots and not hurting social security and medicare for people who need it the most and i think the question is going to be has the republican party changed away from that has the tea party going to reject that or is the country at the point where they are ready and open to hearing these arguments about poverty that huckabee is making? it's possible we've swung back in the other direction and you're hearing a lot of republicans talk about the idea of raising wages and income in this economy. >> i guess it doesn't matter what side of the aisle you're on certainly know how to party in hope arkansas from what we hear behind you. tony orlando, don't hear that too often anymore. thank you very much kasie hunt live in hope arkansas. we have two major developments today involving democratic candidate hillary clinton, the former secretary of state has agreed now to go to capitol hill as early as this month to testify at the benghazi hearings, but she says she will testify just once not twice as
8:03 am
republicans are demanding. and later this afternoon, clinton will take her presidential campaign to nevada where she is courting hispanic voters. the presidential candidate to call to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. clinton will unveil her policy another one of those round table discussions like she's been holding so far, this one at a vegas school that's 70% hispanic. joining us from vegas, let's talk about the news developing overnight and what we learned regarding clinton's plan to testify before this hearing and giving the republicans one shot at this and not two as they requested. >> well, tamron this is a product of months of negotiation between the republicans in that committee, the democrats, and hillary clinton and her private attorney. she had agreed to testify back in november but the republicans said they didn't want to bring her until they had assurances that all her private e-mails involving benghazi had been turned over. they still haven't been totally satisfied on that, but they've
8:04 am
gone back and forth and now she's agreed to do this one hearing for the week of may 18th as soon as the week of may 18th. republicans wanted two. yesterday after they got word from clinton's attorney she agreed to do the one, she said they were going to review it and come back with a decision. we haven't heard final details, but historically, very unusual for a declared presidential candidate to have to testify under oath on capitol hill. >> we recall how contentious it was before she had the hearing, some of the exchange i believe at the time between her and rand paul, her attorney david kindle in the letter regarding the committee and her appearance said secretary of clinton will stay as long as necessary to answer the committee's questions, but will not prolong the committee's efforts further by appearing on two separate occasions when one will suffice. will any of the questioning involve the clinton foundation and some of the questions now that have arisen? >> well it's certainly possible tamron. chairman gowdy, the republican who runs this committee, says he wants to focus on two issues
8:05 am
the e-mails and the benghazi attack itself but i imagine some republicans on the committee wouldn't help themselves by bringing up the foundation certainly, because it has been such a big issue and they could find ways to tie it into her tenure as secretary of state and the benghazi hearings but she wants to move on with her presidential campaign. >> let's talk about how the impact of the e-mail scandal, if you want to call it that how it's impacted her numbers thus far. the new nbc/wall street journal poll shows her unfavorability up but while she is still in the head to head matchup leading all of her gop contenders alex. >> that's right, tamron. this is what happens when you leave a very lofty and apolitical position of secretary of state and you come down into the mud and the political fray of running for president. when she left the state department in february of 2013 sky high approval ratings, one of the most popular politicians in the country, save perhaps her
8:06 am
husband. now her numbers have come way, way down she's less popular than the president, which is interesting, because she had been more popular than him, but at the same time she still leads all republican opponents, leads jeb bush by six percentage points and she is the only presidential candidate, major presidential candidate, who is in the black. in other words she's the only one that doesn't have a net unfavorable rating. you know basically americans are not too excited about any of these presidential candidates but she's the one they are slightly more excited about than the rest. >> thank you very much. developing now, isis is claiming responsibility for sunday's shooting at a controversial event in texas that featured cartoons of the prophet mohammed. if true it would be the first attack by isis on u.s. soil. the gunmen are now identified as 30-year-old elton simpson and
8:07 am
34-year-old naadirdir soofi. other details are also emerging. simpson was known to the fbi, added to a terror watch list five years ago after being convicted of lying about plans to travel to somalia to wage what federal prosecutors called violent jihad. however, 34-year-old nadir soofi was not on any terror list and his grandmother insists he was not a terrorist. >> you're saying that his roommate was overzealous and extremist? >> yeah, he must have kept preaching to him or something. that's not something nadir would do. whoever he was with talked him into it. >> that's how you feel about it? >> yep, no other way it would have happened. >> nbc's ayman mohyeldin has been covering the story for us out of garland, texas. there's no evidence to support this claim that isis is responsible or motivated this but what do we know at least
8:08 am
regarding what they are saying? >> yeah you know tamron that's a very good question i think it's certainly going to be the focus of both the federal and intelligence sources working this case right now. there's no doubt about it that the recording, that is the radio broadcast of the announcement that came out of an isis top tier forum, if you will certainly seemed authentic and credible from those who know it and follow it in the past the claim of responsibility does not seem too much to be in doubt, if you will. i think the focus is going to be from an investigative point, and this is what has not yet emerged, what role if any isis did actually play in this particular attack. was this simply a claim of responsibility by the terrorist organization as a moment of opportunity for them to try and get some propaganda value out of this attack or was there any kind of operational link to these two individuals, and as the fbi begins to piece together some of the details behind these two individuals, the weapons
8:09 am
they had, whether they received money or training or if there are any other associates still in the united states that helped them or facilitated this attack for them did they have any overseas links to the terrorist group. so that is going to be the main focus of the investigation, certainly, within the coming days and hours. but for isis to claim responsibility, there's also a propaganda value, they want to capitalize on the fear aspect of it. they did not provide any evidence or specifics as to how isis may have played a role in this particular attack other than to simply say that the two individuals were brothers, they were holy warriors within the organization that carried out this attack. >> at this point ayman, our authorities, which include, of course the fbi is confident it was just these two individuals and not more people perhaps linked to them, especially in the phoenix area? >> well certainly the fbi is going to be looking for any kind of support they may have received through associates or perhaps even material support
8:10 am
that they may have received from affiliates. the questions are going to revolve around the weapons used did they receive any money, did they travel abroad what led them to this attack and certainly by searching the apartment in phoenix, they are going to look if there are computer hard drives or pieces of intelligence, bank accounts thing to shed light on support these two individuals may have received. right now the investigation is still ongoing. the scene of the crime itself seems to have been over in the sense the street has been opened up. there's no presence, if you will of the fbi or local enforcement at the actual scene, so seems they've gathered everything they needed to and now are focused on the intelligence and piecing together that wider network, that bigger picture of the investigation and where it may lead them whether overseas or to other known individuals here in the united states. i could tell you from speaking to some of the local muslim community, they were not known to muslim leaders here they were not actively involved in the mainstream muslim
8:11 am
communities, and that is according to one of the directors of the leading muslim advocacy group here in texas. >> live for us in garland with the latest there. also developing, secretary of state john kerry made an unannounced visit to somalia. kerry, the first secretary of state ever to visit that country torn by decades of war and where the government is still battling the al qaeda-linked terror group al shabaab. chris jansing joins us live. chris, as i understand secretary kerry is back in kenya, spent three hours on the ground in somalia. interesting timing. as we know, a lot of attention paid to somalia, including after this latest incident in texas where we now know one of the suspects was reportedly planning to travel to somalia for some type of training. >> you're exactly right, tamron. this trip meant to send a message to al shabaab and other terror-related groups who have found safe haven amid the chaos
8:12 am
of civil war in somalia that's been raging since 1986 as you mentioned. basically, the united states is saying we are here the united states has been involved for example, in drone strikes, and we're not going anywhere until we feel that the threat of terror is under control, but just underscore how dangerous somalia remains, john kerry never left the airport, where he was greeted by the president and the prime minister, who called it a great moment for his country, besides the threat of terror, they are also looking at what to do about a refugee crisis. so many somalis have gone to other countries, most particularly kenya, that it is in the larger interest of that area to find some sort of settling down there so that those somalis, for example, 350,000 at one refugee camp alone in kenya, can return to their country. of course there has been a long history between the united states and somalia and the
8:13 am
difficulties this country has gone through. one, when there was a raid that went awry by delta force and u.s. army rangers, it became the topic of a movie "black hawk down." another movie, "captain phillips," based on what has been a long history in recent years of somali piracy again, fed by the chaos on the ground. so this is really a strong message being sent by john kerry and this administration that the u.s. is and will remain involved, especially with the ongoing threat of terror that you mentioned, tamron. >> chris jansing live for us from the white house thank you, chris. coming up new details emerging on the sudden death of dave goldburg the husband of sheryl sandberg who died according to authorities on an accident on a tread mill. plus a special election is under way in new york city for the seat held by disgraced republican congressman michael grimm grimm. it is part of today's first read. and this -- >> you guys break up and you

on politics for you this morning. today, our nbc news/wall street journal poll shows why hillary clinton may be stronger a stronger candidate now than when she battled barack obama for the democratic nomination. also former governor rick perry, well, he could be the next republican to join the increasingly crowded race for the gop nomination. and there's a high profile congressional seat up for grabs today in a special election in new york. joining me now, nbc news senior political editor mark murray. good morning, mark. >> good morning, tamron. >> i feel i haven't seen you in such a long time. a lot to jump into this morning this new poll what is the real headline to you? >> you know the real headline there's good and bad news for hillary clinton. the bad news is her favorable ratings have gone down. her rating and getting high marks for being honest and trustworthy also has gone down and as you would expect after
8:32 am
just a month of tough questions and scrutiny regarding the clinton foundation as well as her e-mails. the good news is she's still leading all the republicans. she leads jeb bush by six points, she leads marco rubio by six points scott walker by ten points, rand paul by four points, and, by the way, her favorable/unfavorable numbers are better than any of the republicans in the field, so she's taken some hits but still is your early 2016 front-runner. tamron, as you mentioned, her numbers among democrats when looking at presidential attributes, for the most part are stronger than they were at this point in 2007. >> all right. and moving on to our second topic, of course it could be another announcement for gop nominee governor rick perry, i believe, the date -- i'm looking for it may 18th we're hearing? >> yeah he'd always said about may or june. kind of getting into the early part of the summer late spring. it will be interesting to see, tamron if it's room for rick
8:33 am
perry, though it's worth noting four years ago when he decided to come into the race in august of 2011 he took the republican contest by storm. jumped out to be the early front-runner and later ended up falling to mitt romney and others, but for a while really took off. this time around he has become a bit of an afterthought and a lot of people think after his poor performance in iowa in 2012 that you know used time to look at other folks, he does bring some talent to the table, but worth noting tamron he's still under indictment in his own state of texas and his supporters believe these are bogus charges, but it's still charges nonetheless and that's never the greatest platform on to which to launch a presidential bid. >> kind of going back to the first story that we were talking about regarding the head-to-head matchups with hillary clinton and some of those gop nominees out there, it is interesting this timing. and we talk about chris christie yesterday, if he is able to get through this bridgegate the

latest development when is it too late for some of these republicans to jump into the race if this field is so crowded. is there room? >> you're right, time does seam to heal a lot of wounds when it comes to american politics but you look at the successful presidential candidates out there, tamron these are folks who have been planning meticulously for two years or longer, they don't just wake up in the summer before the iowa caucuses and decide they are going to run for the presidency. rick perry was late in august of 2011, we saw fred thompson who was another late entry in that 2008 race. both of them actually were people we talked about, but weren't able to win. i do think the folks that are successful are the ones who have been planning and working on this for a very long time. >> especially when looking at donors and the money ball that is involved in politics these days. let's talk about the seat held by congressman michael grimm. we know he pled guilty to the federal tax evasion charges.
8:35 am
a pretty hot race there. >> yeah, it's a hot race, but ones the democrats seemed to have concede. you have scandal-ridden former republican who left the house of representatives, pick up opportunity for democrats. this is a swing congressional district where democrats have had some success in the past but they really aren't playing and i think one of the reasons why, they are focusing more for the 2016 general election when the overall political environment favors them more than this special. and republicans have a very strong candidate in prosecutor daniel donovan. it's worth noting that he was the prosecutor who decided not to take up charges in the eric garner shooting and that's an issue that hasn't come up much particularly after what's occurred this baltimore. this has been a surprising nonissue. >> that is interesting. thank you very much, mark. we'll talk with you tomorrow with the first read politics run down for our audience. thank you. coming up sofia vergara is
