navigated the urgent challenges of recent years, from ending our combat mission in afghanistan to leading the international coalition to destroy isil conducting humanitarian operations from typhoon relief in the philippines to fighting ebola in west africa and strengthen our security alliances from europe to asia. at every step you have been critical to our processes and i have valued not only your counsel but your friendships. at the same time marty and sandy have helped guide our forces through difficult fiscal times, especially sequestration. they have stayed focus on readiness, training and modernization. today, also more opportunities for women in our armed forces we are tackling the outrage of sexual assault, which has no place in our ranks. we have made progress in large part because leaders like marty and sandy have made sure we are recruiting and training and equick and training the best fighting force on the planet. i look forward to honoring marty

police officer and marine veteran of korea, joe followed in his father's footsteps and has distinguished himself through nearly 40 years of military service. he has commanded marines in the field from the platoon level to a marine expeditionary force during the invasion of iraq he led marines in the charge to baghdad. given his combat ex-peer enwhy, i was proud to nominate joe as the command -- as the commander of american and coalition forces in afghanistan. i have had a chance to work with him. i have been extraordinarily impressed by joe, from the situation room where he helped to shape our enduring commitment to afghanistan, to my visit last year to baghram, where i saw his leadership firsthand. i know joe. i trust him. he has already proven his ability to give me his unvarnished military advice based on his experience on the ground. under his steady hand we

white house correspondent, kristen welker and our chief pentagon correspondent, jim miklaszewski. kristen, this is such an important post and joe dunford has every credential. in normal times, this would be an easy confirmation barring anything unforeseen. >> it should be andrea by the president's own words, the outgoing chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, marty dempsey, who is going to be refiring october, leaves some pretty big shoes to fill. and by all accounts general dunford is just the man to do that. he is combat tested who led marines in both iraq and afghanistan, was the chief commander of all international coalition forces there in afghanistan at a very tough time during the presidential elections there and as the drawdown of forces began, and he was removed from that job early to take over as the marine corps commandant. and i can tell you that his supporters say dunford is a

brilliant strategist and tactician, as well as leader. that he is just as comfortable in a boardroom as he is on the battlefield. and everybody is predicting a very quick and easy confirmation, andrea. >> and kristen welker the relationship between barack obama and martin dempsey, mick alluded to it, really really close, closer than it might have even been otherwise because secretary of defense chuck hagel, was an outlier in the cabinet and dempsey was the point person he turned to during very critical times. >> you're absolutely right, andrea, and that really underscores the point that mick was making. he is leaving big shoes to fill but a senior administration official tells me that dunford is perceived as being one of president obama's closest military confidants, that president obama seeing him as a marine's marine and that he is specifically impressed by his leadership skills. he has, as mick alluded to led

u.s. forces in afghanistan, in iraq and it is widely expected that he will be confirmed. he has the respect of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. in act if a, andrea, i will read you this from senator lindsey graham who says "general dunford is a proven leader commanding forces in afghanistan, with a deep understanding of the national security challenges we face. certainly, there are many including and especially the fight against isis." andrea, back to you. >> that, of course a key enforcement from such an important member of the armed services committee on the republican side. thanks, both of you. and here in las vegas, happy cinco demy yoerks at a predominantly hispanic high school that hillary clinton is going to be visiting today to talk about immigration reform and a path to citizenship. but her campaign is also launching a new defense today online against all of those questions about clinton foundation fund-raising. it is an i shall a you of trust that is also showing up in our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. joining me now for our daily fix is john rolston, political analyst, veteran here host of
9:10 am
rolston live spent decades covering nevada politics and ann guerin, covering the clinton campaign for the washington because. first to you john. this whole question of trust, it is showing erosion in our nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. now only 25% of those polled say that she is honest and trustworthy and this is after she has been hammered by the book that is officially coming out today, "clinton cash." what are people here saying about this? >> i think the same thing as they are everywhere, they are concerned about it. democrats try to slough it off, right, but you have to be concerned. and her husband did not do her any favors with that interview in africa where he said i got to pay our bills, blame the media, says there's no facts to support this of course this is probably not going to be helped you well know, she goes and testifies before that committee in a few weeks about benghazi. something clearly happening may

in 2015, as opposed to september of 2016 but they have to do something about this and that's why that campaign you alluded to has started. >> and anne gearan the interview, nbc's exclusive interview that cynthia mcfadden conducted and bill clinton, defensive, lashing out at critics and what is holding up for hillary clinton though i should say in the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll, head-to-head, she still leads most republicans in single digits. scott walker by double digits by ten points. so, that lead is holding up. she is still certainly the most dominant democratic candidate. >> right. and we shouldn't forget that but the erosion was marked. and you can see the kind of reaction that the campaign is having and hillary clinton's defenders beyond the campaign, they really ramp it had up in the last few days must be seeing the same kind of things that your poll picked up which
9:12 am
is you know there are two things people say, we think she will be a good president but fewer people that the last time it was measured said that they trust her on any number of fronts. so, that is worrisome to the campaign. >> and that's why the campaign clearly is today launching a new online campaign a new website, a new social media campaign. they are confronting this to try to rebut "clinton cash," the book by peter schweitzer and to try to get ahead of these continuing criticisms. this is what mike huckabee had to say certainly alluding to the clinton foundation in hope, arkansas, the birthplace of both mike huckabee and bill clinton, the man from the original man from hope. huckabee becoming the next republican to launch his campaign today. here's what he had to say. >> i don't have a global foundation or a taxpayer-funded paycheck to live off of. i don't come from a family dynasty, but a working family. i grew up blue collar not blue

legitimate show her leading, i don't think that means that much. it is all going to be about the execution of the campaign. we have 18 months to go we are crazy people. wither following this now. most americans are not. >> and of course you alluded to cynthia's interview. this is part of what bill clinton told her when she was asking about these very questions. >> not a single, solitary fact has been introduced that she has done anything wrong. people should live to be as honest as she is. >> and just the subject here john, about the hispanic vote. written about it today, this school is 70% hispanic. going to meet with some young dreamers, in fact one who had been at the white house and melt with president obama. and she is true iing to say unlike jeb bush and marco rubio who have real roots in the hispanic community, unlike previous republican presidential
9:15 am
nominees, she actually is going to do something on a path to citizenship. >> and of course the hispanic vote is huge here. you mentioned the dim mow graphics of this school optimistic democrats in this state, andrea say maybe 20% of the nevada electorate in november 2016 is going to be hispanic. now, hillary of course saying that she wants a bath to citizenship, she has to stake out that territory in this campaign. republicans are already pointing out that she has a little bit of a checkered record on immigration. of course you remember the flip-flop on driver licenses for undocumented immigrants. here in nevada republican governor a couple of years ago signed a bill allowing what are called driver's privilege cards, driver authorization cards for undocumented immigrants, she has no choice in my opinion to stake this out it could really help her. obama won the hispanic vote 2 1/2, 3:1 here she needs to do the same thing i would say. >> very briefly, is it a mistake for them to take on this "clinton cash" book so firmly?
9:16 am
>> i think they have to. they have to be able to do two things at once so they are making hispanic outreach they are doing something else tomorrow, doing something else the week after that. but this is going to stay with her. hef got to keep hitting back on t yes, sometimes it distracts from their daily message, from their perspective, they have got to keep doing t >> ann guerin jon ralston, thanks for having you here. up next bob corker on the nuclear deal with iran and his bill to give congressional oversight of it. plus, a top clinton campaign official will be here on why nevada is so critical to them. you are watching "andrea mitchell reports," live from las vegas. hello! this little beauty here is top-of-the-line. see, you just pull like this to go left. and like so to go right. where are the brakes? uh, just grab ahold of both and pull straight back. and the "whoa!" is optional. you wouldn't buy a motorcycle without handlebars. no thanks. and you shouldn't ride a motorcycle without geico insurance. roadside assistance, 24 hour service,
