25-year-old liquori tate a rookie graduated from the police academy less than a year ago. tate's mother had an emotional mother's day interview. >> they took away my baby. the hurt is unbearable. i forgive you. >> four suspects have been charged including two who face capital murder charges. they'll be arraigned in court later this afternoon. gabe gutierrez is live joining me now. what are authorities saying about what happened here? >> reporter: hey there andrea. this community has been shaken. this is the first time police officers have been killed in the line of duty here in hattiesburg in more than 30 years according to the mayor. four suspects are due in court this afternoon. they're scheduled to be arraigned. here's who they are. marvin banks and joanie calloway charged with capital murder and

curtis banks, marvin's brother charged with accessory after the fact. he denied he had anything to do with this. a fourth suspect was later arrested and charged with obstruction of justice, cornelius clark. in the past hour or so we spoke to the mother of marvin banks. she has not spoken with her son since the incident but here's what she had to say. >> why do you think marvin did this? >> i don't know. he was out of his mind. he wasn't the same marvin. >> because he was on drugs? >> he was on drugs, that spice. he wasn't the same marvin. i've got live with this the rest of my life too. i'm hurting too like they're hurting. i'm sorry. lord jesus. >> you have a 6-year-old? >> marvin does. >> reporter: now she says marvin's brother curtis she did speak to him. he denies having anything to do with this.

we have not heard marvin's side of the story. he's scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. this comes with police officers are on edge. last year more officers were ambushed and killed than ever before. in this case it is not believed the police officers were targeted. >> i think we had police officers in the wrong place at the wrong time. someone that didn't want to go to jail would rather shoot his way out. that's a sad commentary. >> reporter: again, the community stunned by this. the memorial service this afternoon. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. meanwhile, in washington, saudi arabia's king is the man not coming to dinner. america's most important arab ally has pulled out of the summit later this week. president obama called the leaders to address the nuclear

deal with their neighbor iran. two of the six gulf states invited are going to be there. i'm joined by julie pace white house correspondent for the associated press. the white house claiming this is not a snub. saudis say it's not, but there's no other way to interpret it. >> reporter: it's a confusing situation. friday the white house announced the king was coming for a summit and bilateral meeting with the president wednesday. they announce had the friday and then sunday saudis announced the king is not coming. it's hard to understand how they could have gotten wrong information about the king's plans. there are saudi officials that are coming with good relations to the white house. it adds to the impression the summit isn't going to have the significance that the president would hope. >> now of course some of the leaders say -- some of the arab state ambassadors and such are

saying you can get more done with the crowned prince who's a mayor player counter intelligence minister there and someone the u.s. has dealt with all along. that could be true. he speaks for the king no doubt. that said there is certainly significance of having heads of state. >> reporter: absolutely. it's not as though countries are sending people who are not real players, but look at the optics of this. the president first of all is bringing these leaders to camp david. it's the presidential retreat. he rarely goes there and holds meetings. there was significance around the setting first of all. some was optics of having the president stand side by side with gulf leaders sending the message to iran and other actors in the region u.s. has these

country's backs. while you may still have significant discussion, it's unclear the message sent will be as strong as it would have been if you had heads of statecoming to washington. >> and still to be sorted out, how did the white house get this wrong friday? they certainly should have had communication via john kerry unless this snub took place after he left? >> reporter: absolutely. you know better than anyone how this works. bilateral meetings are not announced from the white house unless all eyes are dotted and t's are crossed. the fact the white house would announce the bilateral meeting was happening. this happened friday. officials say friday night they heard maybe the king wouldn't come. huge unanswered question about how this happened. whether it was simply miscommunication or whether a change in saudi changing and decision to snub the white house. >> julie pace thanks for being there today.

cuba's president castro is praising pope francis for thawing relations between u.s. and cuba. the president met with the pope sunday where he said the pontiff inspired him to return to the catholic church. pope francis visits cuba in september before his trip to the u.s. in the tell constitution president castro vowed to attend. thanks for joining us. >> hi andrea. >> this has been interesting to all of us that follow pope francis and covered cuba. there's been other pope visits. i've been there. previous popes, benedict most recently. there's a great welcoming of pope to havana despite the communist party anticatholic ideology. this is a completely different message from raul castro after meeting the first latin american pope.

>> i think pope francis has tried to put a little heart into a man who was once described to me as by another vatican official as being like a stone. if he can reach this man, that's good. that's good for the people of cuba who have been impressed by this dictatorship for 50 years now. it's good for the church in cuba that needs to rebuild itself after a difficult five decades. pope francis is shrewd man. he knows as you know that a raul castro is a cunning character who may be using the pope even as he professes to be rethinking his religious position. >> raul castro -- let it be said -- understands that this opening is so important to him. the opening negotiated partly with the vatican intermediate rare. we're learning additional

details that cardinal ortega was invited to washington last summer by the retired cardinal. that was the pretext but carried a message from raul castro to president obama. the fact that pope francis, the vatican, has been so deeply invested in this opening which follows his philosophy that there shouldn't be barriers that this embargo is wrong. 50 years, so close 90 miles away -- that's partly very much in the havana a regime's interest. >> pope francis knows the people of cuba are real victims of cuba being cut off from the word. john paul ii said in 1998 let cuba open itself to the world, and let the world open itself to cuba.

if this is another nudge in that direction, that's a good thing. it would be interesting to see president castro make a concrete gesture of real intention to change. for example, widespread release of political prisoners, some reconciliation of ladies in white. remarkably brave women that demonstrate sunday on behalf of their imprisoned relatives. i think everyone would like to see something a bit more reference to where raul castro went to high school in havana. >> i think george the pope is also reflecting very widespread from the u.n. to oas disagreement with embargo, u.s. mandated embargo -- that the policies -- no one questions the issue of policy in havana. the law in the united states has blocked an opening.

>> it will be interesting to see if the pope brings that up when he comes to washington right after he visits cuba in september. seems to me that the question is how do you use any easing of restraint on trade with cuba as a means to empower the people of cuba to take control of their own future which they haven't been able to do for five decades. that's what pope francis wants to see happen. >> george michael, thank you very much. 43 million in the u.s. are directly in the path of dangerous storms from the upper midwest to texas following a weekend of deadly storms. rescue and recovery operations are underway in van, texas after a powerful tornado ripped through the community last night. this in from officials on the ground there. two were killed in those storms. at least 43 people were transported to hospitals with injuries. eight people are still missing amid the rubble and debris.

>> we're working very hard to get van back to normal. please be patient with us. there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes. van is a strong city. strong community. we will rebuild. i would ask that you continue to pray for all the lives that were affected in this disaster. continue to pray for the families and everyone and for the city of van. >> the weather channel from van, texas. thanks very much. what is the situation there now? is it over as far as poor people are concerned, or are there more tornados under threat? >> reporter: there's no tornado threat at this point. good morning andrea. good morning to you at home. we're on east main street center of town here in van, texas the. that press conference happening just about a quarter of a mile

down the street. you can notice the american red cross. they've been here since last night. they helped about 100 people seek refuge. 20 remain in the shelter that the point. this particular area i'm going to walk to has been a focal point throughout the morning. we've been here since 5:00 a.m. local time. the national barg rolled in. eight still unaccounted for in this town. two have been confirmed dead following these storms. authorities believe the storms came in from the southwest. i'm walking over towards the area where there are a lot of mobile homes. this is the southern part of van, northern part over here. sustained devastation but not as much as this side of the town. you can notice galvanized steel, stop signs peeled over trees uprooted, homes levelled mobile homes ripped off their

foundation and tossed hundreds of yard across the street. we noticed an anchor from mobile homes hanging from a tree. this is the local elementary school to my left if we can pan over to show how the roof was uplifted there the elementary school. windows have been boarded up. they're trying to contain the damage. to the right is administration building. notice the column has been dislodged. these are the indicators that the national weather service is going to survey and analyze throughout the day. they have a team on the ground to determine just how strong this suspected tornado was. we're going to continue to give you live updates on the weather channel as well. for now, we know that two have been confirmed dead. eight are still unaccounted for after a barrage of severe storms sunday night here in van, texas. >> thanks so much from the weather channel. talking trade with democratic

for 40 years. despite a huge increase in technology and productivity, we have millions of americans who are working longer hours for low wages. since 2001 we have lost some 60,000 factories in america and millions good paying manufacturing jobs. why is that? how did that happen? there are a number of reasons. central to that are disastrous trade agreements which have allowed corporate america to shut down in this country, move to mexico move to china, move to other low wage countries, produce their products there and then bring those back to the united states. the tpp in my view is continuation of disastrous trade policies. enough is enough. we need new approachers to trade which creates jobs in america and not in china. >> the president says that things would be worse if not for trade agreements that this trade

agreement is better than previous trade agreements has better protections and that it's wrong to blame all the ills of the shrinking -- growing wage disparity, shrinking wage increases, shrinking manufacturing base on trade agreements. >> well again, i was on the floor of the senate a couple of weeks ago. you know what i was doing, reading the quotes from people like president clinton and mitch mcconnel and all advocates of free trade right wing think tanks, corporate people wonderful things they promised if we passed free trade with china et cetera et cetera. it turned out almost every instance they were wrong. i'm not saying trade alone is the reason why the middle class is disappearing. i am saying and we have all kinds of economic studies to back it up that it's one of the central factors.

look, nobody doubts that corporations have shut down in america and gone to low wage countries. it makes sense to them. why do you want to pay an american worker 15 to $20 an hour when you can go to kvitova tham -- to vietnam. it's 56 cents an hour there. that's what corporate america wants. when you have corporations, wall street and drug companies telling us this is a really good agreement and meanwhile trade unions and environmentalists saying this is not a good trade agreement, i will listen to those people who represent workers not large corporations. >> here's president obama. he was as you know at nike headquarters in the export state, oregon in favor of trade deals. then sat down with matt. here's what he had to say about elizabeth warren. >> the notion i had this massive fight with wall street to make sure we don't repeat what

happened in 2007-2008. then i sign a provision to unravel it? i'd have to be pretty stupid. it doesn't make any sense. this is pure speculation. she and i both taught law school. one of the things you do as a professor is spin out hypotheticals. this is hypothetical speculative. >> so it's just hypothetical? >> i'm not a law professor, but this is what i know. within this provision agreement, there will be provisions for investor state relationships. what this agreement will allow is for corporations to sue governments, local, state, federal, countries around the world if they're inhibiting the future profits of that corporation. let me give you an example of what happened. in the tiny country of uruguay,

i don't know how many there are, but i do know as long as you have a situation where they're able to penetrate into the consciousness of a lot of young people which use this as their only means of communication and receiving information that it's a serious long term problem. by the way, one of the things that we should -- one of the aspects of this challenge we should be really focussing on is having the muslim clerics condemn isis as being the proversion of islam they are. we need a lot more of that. >> finally, i wanted to ask you about the article that in fact nbc has not independently corroborated the white house, pentagon are knocking it down. hurst, well known investigative reporter in a london newspaper is claiming the raid on osama bin laden, the take down was not

in boston today, dzhokhar tsarnaev's team. the defense completed its case by calling sister helen to the stand, a nationally recognized opponent of capital punishment, best known for her book and academy award winning portrayal in the 1995 film "dead man walking". this moved very quickly today. we're going to get the closing arguments, charge to the jury on thursday. the case is then in their hands. >> reporter: it is.

we're coming to the end of the trial that began march 4th. we've seen over 154 witnesses called to the stand over the 27 days of system we had in guilty and penalty phase. what happened this morning as the defense presented its closing part of its case in an effort to try to spare tsarnaev the death penalty. you point out they called to the witness stand the catholic nun sister helen. she gave testimony. for the first time we got the chance to hear someone talk about the demeanor of tsarnaev. we have heard people talk about when he was little as a college friend but not at this time. she said he said emphatically no one deserves to suffer like they did. she said he seemed absolutely sincere and sorry for what they

did. she was never asked if she thought he should deserve the death penalty or not. she was not allowed to do that. you can infer by the introduction to me you pointed out she's against the death penalty and would be opposed to it. as you point out, we're at the end of the penalty phase in terms of testimony on this. and then on wednesday, they'll come back for closing arguments. we'll talk about the judge charging the jury. then this case will actually go to the jurors for deliberations. he's got 17 counts of which he was convicted of which carry the death penalty. we have to see how this jury will decide on those 17 counts andrea. >> they only need one to persuade one person in order to prevent that death penalty from being imposed. thank you so much from boston. that does it for this edition of "andrea mitchell reports." thanks for being with us. follow the show online facebook and twitter @mitchell reports.
