"first look" starts right now. >> good morning. thanks so much for joining us today. twice the speed limit. a train was traveling 106 miles per hour in a 50 zone. seven people confirmed dead, hundreds injured and some still unaccounted. who was behind the controls of the train? we are learning more about the engineer brandon bostian. his attorney told night line he has absolutely no recollection of the accident or anything unusual. he's handed over a blood sample to the police. what's the latest on what happened? >> reporter: good morning. we're getting more details about amtrak 188. it left philadelphia tuesday night at 9:10:00 p.m. it approached the left turn behind me going at 106 miles per hour. that's more than twice the speed limit of 50 miles per hour. he applied the brakes.

that brought it down to 102 miles per hour but the train still derailed. all seven cars off of the tracks. let's talk about the man at the center of the investigation. 32-year-old brandon bostian. he's been with amtrak nine years. his attorney says he doesn't remember anything after approaching that turn. he was thrown about the cab. he was bruised up. he picked up his bag and his phone. he says he called 9-1-1. he gave his bag and phone and a blood test of the authorities, but he has not taken to the ntsb. he has only spoken to the philadelphia police department. they talked about positive train control. ptc. this is something on their priority list something they want to have at this location. it's in other locations around the country. a sensor system that if in place, it would have prevented the crash. >> thank you so much adam. the city of brotherly love is

showing its support for those injured in the derailment. eagles players delivered coffee and donuts to the hospital. we are learning about those who lost their lives like derek griffith. he received a doctorate just a month ago. >> justin denser was a second year midshipman at the naval academy. he was supposed to be home by 10:30. >> they said there was a derailment. >> his mother got the awful news her son had died. jim gaines worked for the associated press. he was killed on his way home after meetings in d.c. abid gi lawny and another didn't survive the crash. four of the seven passengers who died on train 188.

them? >> wash outtch out. let's talk about politics. within hours of the amtrak crash here philadelphia, house aproep ray or thes voted to slash amtrak's budget. that kind of effect could this have? >> this is really the reflection of a long-time issue in the united states. there's always been an antagonism toward mass transit because the united states is so slanted toward the automobile but beyond that, you have a number of congress people who aren't covered by the northeast corridor which is the main amtrak route. they have an animosity toward amtrak and even a tragic event that might have been prevented were the proper safety mechanisms in place, they still are not moved to provide more money for amtrak. >> we still don't know what

caused the train to go over 100 miles per hour before derailing but does there need to be a new focus on how to maintain the infrastructure. >> part of the issue is whether the government should be involved in transportation, at least that's the issue that is raised by those who oppose mass transit. they are the same people who understand when highways are funded by the government but i think there's going to have to be a change in the thinking in this country if we're going to keep up with the rest of the world when it comes to moving people around. >> i want to switch to jeb bush. he said he was running for president and then saying if i run. he was also giving conflicting answers to would he have supported an iraq invasion based on what is known now. he has changed his answer. no how much will this hurt him if he runs for president? >> having the bush name is a

right after disaster struck in philadelphia, we started hearing from survivors on the ground. and former pennsylvania congressman patrick furry was on the amtrak 188 when it went off the tracks. >> it was a normal train ride from washington up toward new york. i was trying to rush home to get home on time to see my kids. i heard violent shaking like vibrations and next thing you know we went left like we were leading left and then finally just went over and turned over to the right. i was on the left side of the train cab, and everyone on the left side just flew to the other side. i went head first onto the other end. just a lot of debris. a lot of blood.

a lot of people crying for help. >> i made sure i helped people get out. at first i checked to make sure i still had any arms and legs. it was pretty violent. >> you were still checking to make sure you were in one piece? >> yeah. there was blood and i served overseas twice with the army. the guy next to me was unconscious. i got him up and he got up, and he came to. i yanked him up and i had to pull myself. we were on the side so the ceiling was a side window. i pulled myself up on a bench area so i could reach it and punch it out and the people that were able to get out were gets out. i helped get them up and i was trying to help the folks that couldn't move that were really in bad shape. >> you are lucky. >> i was. >> did you talk to your family? >> yeah. i got to talk -- it's emotional.

hughes right there. it's thursday. we begin this morning with a deadly train derailment in philadelphia which is being blamed for seven deaths. the search for answers is revealing startling discoveries. investigators say train 188 was traveling more than 1000 miles per hour when it derailed. that would be more than twice the speed limit as the train began to turn before going off the tracks. >> going into that curve, he was traveling at 106 miles per hour. and then what happened? >> shortly after he entered the curb, he placed the train into basically put the emergency brakes on the train. >> reporter: slams on the brakes. >> yes. the train derailed at that point so i would say it was too late. >> officials are trying to determine why the train was traveling so fast. they say an advanced safety system known as positive train
