double header around labor day. >> okay. >> a lot of people think i'm retiring and i have been kind of telling a fib. i have been forced to leave the job because i gave $75,000 to the clinton foundation. i'm sorry. [ applause ] >> bill murray's final appearance on "the late show" with david letterman gets a little messy. we will explain what happened a little later on in the show. good morning, it's may 20th. welcome to "way too early." however, it is believed to be the largest auto recall in u.s. history. japanese airbag maker takata finally gave into pressure from regulators, trouble u doubling the number of vehicles affected to faulty air backs to 34 million. federal transportation officials say many of takata's air backs explode with such force, sending
2:31 am
shrapnel flying into passengers and drivers. >> reporter: the size of the recall is stunning. nearly 34 million vehicles nationwide now involved 11 different auto makers. roughly one out of every four cars on the road. after five months of insisting its airbag inflaters are not effectsive the takata corporation now admits that's not true. >> takata has agreed to declare that airbag inflaters are defective. it is recalling these inflaters and these recalls are nation wide. >> reporter: the government says five people in the u.s. have been killed by deflective airbags, including 18-year-old ashley parham when the air back exploded. >> i literally got there and watched in 18 seconds an 18-year-old girl literally die in front of me inside that vehicle. >> reporter: others like brandy brewer lost an eye. >> it just makes me angry, angry that this is an ongoing problem
2:32 am
and it's going on now. this is something that should have been fixed years ago. >> government investigators believe defective airbags are most dangerous in humid climates. it can cause the inflator to explode. to find out if your car is on the expanded recall list locate your vehicle identification number right underneath your wipers. then go to safercar.gov. go to search for recalls. then recalls by vin. type in that vin number and whatever recalls are affecting your car, including the airbag recall should pop up. >> it's not enough to identify defects. to save lives and prevent injuries defects must be repaired. >> in a statement, takata said we are continuing to work closely with regulators and auto maker customers to do everything we can to advance the safety of drivers. but repairing all of the 34 million vehicles could take years and it's possible that if yours has already been replaced it will have to be replaced again, if investigators determine the replacement parts
2:33 am
are also defective. the department of transportation will now determine which cars to get fixed and that will be based on risk location and age. back to you. >> tom costello reporting. 34 million. my goodness. officials are trying to figure out what caused an oil pipeline to rupture along the california coast yesterday. some 21,000 gallons of crude leaked into the ocean off beautiful santa barbara before it could be contained t. coast guard says it left a 4 mile sheen extending into the water before crews capped it three hours later. officials say recovery teams have been activated to collect any affected wild life but already health officials are banning fishing nearby. severe weather continues to pound parts of texas and oklahoma. the states were hit with at least 20 tornadoes over the last 24 hours. damages have been reported in at least three texas counties. these are pitchers from mineral wells west of dallas.
2:34 am
we are told several buildings were damaged. no injuries thankfully were reported. meantime, all of oklahoma is under a flash flood warning. these pictures are from norman oklahoma. many cars took their chances driving through flooded streets. most well they didn't make it. oklahoma city could easily drop its rainfall today. still 12 days left in the month. bill kierans will have the complete forecast coming up in weather. a federal court ruled the state department must move faster in removing hillary clinton's e-mails from her private e-mail. after the department of state asked for a january, 2016 deadline. a u.s. appeals court reminded them to respond to the froemd of information request in quote the shortest amount of time t. state department has a week to epresident pair a time table to roll out the e-mails. yesterday in i, what clinton also called on the states
2:35 am
department to move faster. >> i have head repeatedly i want those e-mails out. nobody has a bigger interest in getting them released than i do. i respect the state department. they have their process that they do for everybody, not just for me. but anything that they might do to expedite that process, i heartily support. you know i want the american people to learn as much as we can about the work that i did with our diplomats and our development experts. >> will you demand it? >> well they're not mine. they belong to the state department. so the state department has to go through its process but as much as they can expedite that process, that's what i'm asking them to do. please move as quickly as they possibly can to get them out. >> yes, that was hillary clinton taking questions, more on that later. this all comes down as the "wall street journal" reports that top clinton staffers kept a tight reign on document releases during her tenure at state. it has to do with items requested under the freedom of
2:36 am
information act t. paper cites anonymous sources who say if one instance clinton's chief of staff and ultraloyalist cheryl mills asked to see documents that were requested and were related to the keystone pipeline. mills reportedly then asked that some not be released and according to "journal," he staff asked some documents having to do with president clinton's speaking engagements also be held back a. spokesman for hillary clinton told the "journal" that mills quote didn't inappropriately interfere with the process and said the state department takes requests seriously and has a rigorous process in place in handling the thousands of requests that come n. they took that process seriously and made eight priority. to suggest otherwise would be wrong. let's talk about the 2016 implications. it had been 28 days since hillary clinton last asked a question from a hungry political press core. when yesterday during a sit down
2:37 am
with islands in cedar falls, a reporter interrupted. >> just wait, wait. yes, maybe when i finish talking to the people here. how's that? i might. i have to ponder it. but i will put it on my list for due consideration. >> thank you. >> yes, sir. >> after the round table wrapped up she did as you saw take questions, including one that has republicans 2016 ers pouncing the decision to go to war in iraq. >> look i know that there have been a lot of questions about iraq post-and candidates over the last weeks. i've made it very clear that i made a mistake, plain and simple. and i have written about it in my book. i have talked about it in the past and you know what we now see is a very different and very dangerous situation. the united states is doing what it can, but, ultimately this has to be a struggle that the
2:38 am
iraqi government and the iraqi people are determined to win for themselves. and we can provide support, but they're going to have to do it. >> meanwhile, the republican side after a day spent wooing house republicans on capitol hill wisconsin governor scott walker gave his answer to the iraq question. >> any president, i don't care which party, i think given that information at the time would have made a similar decision. even hillary clinton authorized use of force in iraq. people hindsight are questioning. you look at that i think it made sense at the time with the information given us. >> 13 years later, still such a big issue. cooler heads have yet to prevail among democrats when it comes to fast track authority over the president's pacific trade deal. here's what elizabeth warren said about president obama's approach yesterday on bloomberg. >> how did we reach this that a
2:39 am
president you supported that you all could be so far on this one issue? >> i really don't understand. one big part has been a lack of transparency in the whole process that we are being asked to grease the skids to move these deals forward without showing what the trade deal is. president bush even put out the scrub text it's called on the trade agreement and headed out there for months before he asked for even partial fast track authority. >> bush more transparent than obama. warren played a declaration there. she also called on hillary clinton to take a firm position on the issue. earlier in the day, clinton said she is waiting to see the final agreement. but not that many people are allowed to read the documents. one of them a cleared adviser named michael whites el writes bill clinton didn't operate like this on the debate on na nta, i
2:40 am
had a copy of the entire text in a safe next to my desk and regularly was briefed on the specifics of the negotiation, including counterproposals made by mexico and canada. during the tpp negotiations the united states trade representative has never shared proposals being advanced by other partners. today's confrontations are in many ways much more restrictive than those of past administrations. >> the white house and lawmakers are going back and forth over the obama's administration plan to defeat isis is working and who is to blame for the latest setback in iraq. the pentagon reveals iraqi forces abandoned u.s.-made equipments, including weapons, half a dozen tanks and a hundred hum-vees when isis seedsed control of ramadi. adam schiff says alarm bells should be going off over the capture and tom boehner says the
2:41 am
time has come for president obama to change direction. white house press secretary josh ernest is rejecting boehner's criticism and says president obama's strategy is still working. this is theing of the beginning of that fight. los angeles is now in the largest city in the nation to adopt a major minimum wage hike after they moved it to $15 an hour. the measure would require businesses with more than 25 employees to meet it by 2020 and smaller businesses would have an additional year to comply an estimated 800,000 workers would benefit from the pay increase officials said. we'll here more from mayor eric garcetti when he joins the conversation on "morning joe." let's turn to business where stocks ended mixed, despite another historic day on wall street t. dow managed to close a second high. wal-mart shares tumbled more than 4% on a disappointing
2:42 am
earnings report. jeff what did wal-mart have to say about those numbers? it's a blue chip a lot of people are invested in. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, luke. sometimes doing the right thing doesn't always get you the right results. or i guess that's what doug mcmillan will be thinking the ceo over at wal-mart because they've sunk a billion dollars into lifting basic wages and there has been a whole program to better train staff and the minimum wage going up to $9 an hour set to go up to $10 an hour next year but that is not helping profits or sales at this point. you get the sense that wal-mart is scratching its head thinking well was it a great idea if it's having impact on earnings? we have to wait and watch and see how they feeds through here. currently, strong and into earnings, it had some impact on wal-mart. for his part the ceo also saying
2:43 am
that americans who are getting a little bit of money back from tax rebates and from the lower fuel price are just saving it and paying down debt. they are not taking it into one of those four-and-a-half,000 walmart stores across the nation and spending it. >> one other story i want to cover for you this mo. i think it's fascinating. jeff besos at amazon has this position like key adviser to the ceo the shadow, few like for the last 15 years, that job has been filled by a plan. >> that is now changing for the first time ever, a woman will take up that key position at amazon. the lucky lady maria rens. the outlook looks bright for her. generally the shadow goes on to great things. it is worth pointing out i guess
2:44 am
as we look to this as a victory for the sex, some of the seven executive officers over at amazon currently one is only filled by a him who. back to you. >> good to see some change there. geoff cutmore. tom brady's punishment over deflategate, the patriot's owner robert kraft seems wants to put the whole thing behind. and he's walked out on the "late show" dressed as liberaci and he may take the entire cake literally. we'll be right back.
