be all over national media. landing in court, the man that flew the copter into the white house lawn says despite the jail time he may face it was worth it. >> i never thought i'd walk away scot-free. nine and a half years i think is a bit outrageous. good day. i'm luke russert in washington filling in for andrea mitchell. we're getting a first look at e-mails hillary clinton demanded be made public. "new york times" publiced a third of personal e-mails hillary clinton turned over to state department from the time she was secretary of state.
9:01 am
the state department turned over the e-mails to a house committee investigating the attacks in libya. congressman, thanks for being on the show. >> great to be with you luke. thank you. >> first question i have to ask you, the benghazi panel that subpoenaed blumenthal to give a private deposition on june 3rd. is that definitive, and what do you expect to learn from that? >> we have now seen the e-mails we've been fighting to get to for a long time. the former secretary was receiving e-mails on her personal account from mr. blumenthal. it's part of our investigation and effort to figure out what happened that night and figure out how we would have security to prevent such a thing. mr. blumenthal is part of that.
9:02 am
the national archives said today the thousand or so e-mails they came in contact with of a personal nature were in fact personal. do you think they're a legitimate source in terms of being a final arbitrator on this? >> no. i think the best answer is take all e-mails that were on the clinton server and provide those to a neutral third party. we suggested ig from the state department and happy to consider other options. we need to make sure every relevant communication related to the entire investigation, not just former secretary clinton allows us as the folks who are trying the american people get the full story is made available. we don't want the personal information, don't need it. we want everything relevant to this investigation and continue to work to get it. >> to go back to my first question. cindy blumenthal is an interesting character. he's a long time confidant,
9:03 am
someone that had direct access to hillary clinton seemingly giving her information about libya and sources, possible business ventures he was exploring. can we definitively say he's going to appear before the committee? what's his response been? >> i don't want to get into private communications between mr. blumenthal and our committee. i can say i'm confident in the next handful of weeks have the opportunity to continue this investigation about the four dead americans. that will include the opportunity to speak to mr. blumenthal at length and hear what he was doing, his connection to secretary clinton in the time period and input he provided bearing on how this could happen in the united states of america. >> hillary clinton said this about her relationship to mr. blumenthal. >> in the public eye, you have
9:04 am
to make sure you're not caught this the bubble and hear from a small group of people. i'll continue talking to my friends, whoever they are. >> does she not have a right to talk to her old friends? so much in washington is people getting inside the bubble. is that a thing in her right to do? >> absolutely. i think as folks who are users and consumers as i am member of the intelligence community, we have an obligation to figure out, and to make sure we have the full story. i think so that's why it's important to talk to mr. blumenthal. he's clearly someone she chose to rely on and input she chose to receive. we need to understand all things our government had taken and consumed. we need to understand the source, why that communication may have been provided to begin to understand how all intelligence that moves into our government is handled. make sure it was handled in the appropriate way and determine how it was the decision makers
9:05 am
allowed those four to be killed september 2012 in libya. >> i would like to read this quickly and get your reaction. goes like this from blumenthal. these officials do believe that the attackers having prepared to launch their assault took advantage of the cover provided by the demonstrations in benghazi protesting internet production seen as disrespectful to prophet mohamed. hillary clinton then forwarded this to jay sullivan. he replies, will do. does that not indicate hillary clinton this was literally the day after benghazi blumenthal says they've used the administration a as a cover. in fact there was a terrorist attack there and she is saying
9:06 am
we should get this around? >> we don't have any idea whether the source had validity or if hillary clinton gave it validity. we don't know what else she had as part t of the information set. this is exactly the reason we need the opportunity to speak to mr. blumenthal find out why he provide had the, find out his sources for that were. then we'll work to find out what was in front of secretary clinton as she made decisions about the appropriate security levels. she spoke after the event about what caused the death of those four americans. >> we appreciate you. >> thank you luke. for more now on hillary clinton's e-mails, i'm joined by kelly o'donnell and chris cillizza. kelly, i'll start off with you in terms of logistics here. we thought may 18 was going to be judgment day, possibility of
9:07 am
hillary clinton coming to the hill. this committee says they're waiting because they want to see a more information provided to them. they want to get to the bottom of it with mr. blumenthal. what's the time line now from where you're sitting? >> one of the frustrations on behalf of the committee luke as they tell us they want more documents because reviewing documents which they say come out too slowly from the state department is a basis to organize the appearance of key figure like sidney blumenthal or secretary clinton herself. without the paper trail, they find it difficult to organize how they'll make the most of the appearance from their point of view. when we first heard may 18th might be the earliest date that was not locked in. when there was no follow up on a time frame still not locked in. now we're hearing blumenthal is expected to be questioned over
9:08 am
the next several weeks and lingering frustration bubbling up as the "new york times" is getting possession of some of the e-mails. the state department is saying there's an imminent release of first rolling e-mails. they want a chance to review that, plan their strategy make the most out of whatever appearance in the one day hillary clinton suggested through her attorney would be willing to give the committee. luke is this. >> ruth, i'm very interested in this sort of pattern of e-mails you have from blumenthal. right after the attacks, blumenthal says intelligence sources on the ground say this was directly related to a demonstration. within the same sort of day it comes back -- i read the line of the congressman -- no they used the demonstration as a affront. seemingly this gives hillary clinton an out if in fact she took this information and pushed it forward. if anything, she can say i was saying these things.
9:09 am
what the administration did is their prerogative. >> it conveys the fogginess of information available to everybody outside the government about exactly what was happening in the aftermath of this. i understand the committee's frustration not having these e-mails. i understand suspicion about not having the e-mails. i'm confused what the goal is here. the congressman appropriately phased the question how did it happen we have four dead americans. how could this have been? whatever we get or don't get from sidney blumenthal i'm not sure how that's going to add to our fundamental of that question. >> it seems they want to get him involved because of his interesting relationship dating back years with the clintons. political relationships and whatnot.
9:10 am
chris cillizza, we love talking politics with you. some of the e-mails did deal with politics of benghazi. one talking about the jimmy carter strategy. a say loanlon article saying the gop could bring this up to make obama look weak. hillary clinton saying make sure ben knows about this. what are we to make of that? how much of that could be problematic in this investigation? >> once we found out more details about what happened that day, many republicans said look this seems to have been because its happened in september is of election year of president obama's re-election year. so, the fact that this is speculated in these e-mails doesn't make it true.
9:11 am
it does speak i always think to reality that there are no dry policy debates. there are no events that do not happen and are not quickly seen or at least sort of suggested to be seen. what does this mean politically speaking? that's true of democrats and republicans. >> and kelly, one thing that struck me as well in these e-mails is that hillary clinton presumably was forwarding these e-mails from blumenthal about events happening on the ground in benghazi to important officials within the state department. not exactly acknowledging they came from blumenthal. they came from hrc. i think that's the thing to rile up investigators on committees more so than anything a saying
9:12 am
is hillary clinton selectivelys choo choosing from business partners and passing it off. >> ruth. to give blumenthal and hillary clinton a chance to sort it out. the committee was a way it was discovered the private server and private e-mails existed. it's also casting a net on web of kinds of communication that a secretary clinton engaged in while in office. she said it was important not be in the bubble reach out and not get outside input from people. also the protected information. not classified but sensitive information might have been pass add around. is it appropriate? those kinds of questions. the e-mails in all our lives can give a real picture about our work life and occasionally inner personal relationships. some e-mails contain things that give it moment in time. do they go over certain lines or
9:13 am
expose sources of input for secretary clinton then that might have been contributing factors? did the people in decision making decisions understand her intel to use that in a broad sense was coming from? >> ruth to tie all this together. you have clinton global initiative to work for. heed i can't matter-- media matters. how does this play out in the end? >> many people wear many different hats. one thing is you can see both from secretary clinton she says the strain's con jillty. you can see from the advisors it's passed on to that this seems like a thin conspiracy theory. one of them says at one point. so look you need to be really careful when you're getting this input that you understand what
9:14 am
the sources of the input are and the conflict of interests she doesn't tote willally endorse what he's saying. i think it's a fair avenue for inquiry. it doesn't go to the fundamental benghazi question as i said earlier of how did we lose these four public servants? >> those that didn't want him in are now saying told you so. appreciate it. take care. breaking news from the worldwide of sports. domestic violence charges against ray rice have been dismissed after he completed the pretrial intervention this week. the charges stem from 2014 caught on surveillance tape in an atlantic city casino elevator. the nfl and ravens were strongly

. welcome back to amr. could be a major break in the man hunt for the suspect on that chilling home invasion murder here in washington d.c. we are waiting to hear an update this hour in the case from d.c. mayor bowser and police chief la near. police identified the suspect as 34-year-old daron dylon wint linking him to dna of all things pizza crust found at the crime scene. law enforcement tell the news he may be in the new york city area and considered armed and dangerous. he's actively sought by the u.s. marshal task force pursuing information he took a bus up to new york. peter alexander has the details. >> this morning washington d.c. police say this man is suspected in the brutal killings of
9:20 am
savopoulos family and their housekeeper a week ago. the 34-year-old is to be charged with murder. his dna was found on the crust of a pizza ordered to the mansion wednesday as the four hostages were inside. the source close to the family says hours before the fire savopoulos assistant delivered $40,000 cash to the home. wrc reports savopoulos called the office thursday morning asking his assistant to deliver the cash. >> when firefighters arrived thursday afternoon, investigators say the $40,000 was gone and so was the family's porsche later found abandoned and torched 15 miles away. it's unclear if wint is the person in this surveillance
9:21 am
video running from the car fire. public records show wint has live at several addresses in that area and has been arrested numerous times. overnight, crime scene investigators searched the home for blood stains. sources familiar with the investigation say the fire began on the second floor in 10-year-old phillip's room. the adults were down the hall in a separate room beaten and stabbed. >> peter alexander joins me on the phone. he's at news conference about to start. of course that's with d.c. mayor bowser and police chief lanier. special agent joins me too. peter, i'll start with you. it seems there's now a chief suspect. what do we expect to learn from this press conference? any new details? he took a bus to new york city possibly. he's armed and dangerous. they linked him up to dna on the pizza crust.
9:22 am
what else could we hear? >> those are critical pieces of evidence. the pizza crust a break in the case. among the questions we want to hear from the mayor is whether they believe the suspect wint was working alone or with someone else. it's challenging for any one individual to hold four people hostage certainly overnight. was he alone or with somebody else? is there perhaps another suspected killer on the loose now? obviously the search has intensified in the last 24 hours. the belief system that he may be operating in the new york area. he had lived in that area in the past, almost a decade ago in 2006. that's one of many place where the focus is directed now. >> jim, i want to go to you. maybe i'm a lamen on these
9:23 am
stories. i've covered them. one thing that struck me was $40,000 was delivered to the house by the assistant of the homeowner. that to me is very unusual. one, how is one able to acquire $40,000 in cash? i couldn't do that today if my life depended on it. how is that delivered without the assistant perhaps alerting law enforcement? s odd the boss man wants me to drop off $40,000 in the middle of the day. >> right luke great point. we're dealing with a man, executive, multimillionaire deals with a lot of money. the washington post reporter said the morning before the fire and murders, there was a flurry of calls to his banker accountant business partner at the steel plant and assistant. clearly under duress from the kidnapper or kidnappers, he was arranging for these funds to be withdrawn or retrieved. he might have had them in a safe somewhere or might have had them
9:24 am
in the account he could get access to that much money. he may have been able to tell the guy this is all i can get quickly in cash which may seem like a lot to the killer to have that cash. the assistant may not have had much information. >> but still -- >> pgo ahead. >> peter hit on key things and you have as well. in technology the transfer exists. perpetrators take things from the crime scene and leave things. they take big things like cars and leave things like blood spatter. here he left dna on a pizza crust after he tried to burn it down and erase videos on the security cameras. >> what has to happen for a single individual to keep four people held hostage as well as we at least know three people
9:25 am
came to the door. the pizza man, the husband of the housekeeper and in the case the assistant. that's an incredible thing for one person to pull off if they're not backed up by somebody else. or is this ordinary? >> i'm with you. it feels to me there's probably more than one. it's possible for one person to do one with a firearm. that controls all occupants. they have some tie up the other occupants and they tie up the last one. also it could be done with a knife. if you look at the center picture, the complete photograph of wint he's a buffed out guy. he works out in the gym all the time. he's very strong. if he goes in before mr. savopoulos is home and gets in to tie up the housekeeper and wife. then waits for him to come home. it's possible to do it alone. the interesting fact is will he
9:26 am
have had contact with mr. mr. mr. savopoulos through the martial arts business. this guy is a body builder. it will be interesting if he knew of him through that arena, find out he had money there and maybe targeted him. >> that's something we've been learning about mr. savopoulos' background. he was ceo of an iron company. it has a lot of high end shops in downtown washington dchlkt he.c. he had business interest in a karate shop. two things that don't seem connected. what are we learning about his business dealings and what impact that could have on the case? >> the police chief is entering. he goes by stefan wint.
9:27 am
here is the mayor, police chief. >> we just heard the mayor and police chief seem to be walking in. all right. we see them. there they are. there's bowser and lanier. they're addressing the press on the neighbors here in the area here in washington dchlkt let's take a listen to that. >> thank you everybody for being here. first, i want to say how grateful i am and the residents of the district of colombia our

9:37 am
in here the most important is pre-existing relationship between sayvopoulos and wint obtaining business. the chief saying he was not random. they knew each other. >> obviously we both live in the d.c. area and witnessed the trauma experience by so many in this community concerned there was a killer on the loose in this community and perhaps someone else could be targeted. giving this relationship is to quell anxieties that people know as awful as it was a targeted killing and that other individuals are not on his so called list or likely to be targeted as well. nonetheless, as she communicated clearly, he is believed to be armed and dangerous. they put out a bulletin before the mayor and police chief walked in. they said he doesn't go by daron
9:38 am
dylon wint but stefan wint. what was most striking to me was the fact he's believed to be in the brooklyn area now which is significant as well as the fact it's not clear at this time whether anybody else was involved in this case. were there to be another suspect or killer it's likely they would have wanted to provide that information to help people be better aware. >> indeed. peter alexander, thank you for your reporting. check out peter tonight on "nightly news." jenn is still on the line. what does this say to us that there's a pre-existing relationship between wint and mr. savopoulos in this case that could seem to quell the anxiety in the community this was in fact not random? what does it tell us about this crime? i assume there's not forced entry that if an individual knows somebody else they're not
9:39 am
immediately alarmed. is it fair to say that? >> right. i know that area as well. i've lived in the d.c. area twice. people in that neighborhood, only time they see police is when there's motor cade in the area. what this tells us is this is a targeted and plan add tack. he knew mr. savopoulos from iron works. he worked there prior to. this could have been a number of years ago. this guy has a lengthy criminal record. he work there had at some point, knew mr. savopoulos. he could have researched where he lived, thought this guy is wealthy. i'm going to force him to give me some money. he went to great pains to commit this crime. great pains. the surveillance camera video, the fire on the car. he desperately wanted to get away. when he sees his picture on the news he's a big flight armed.

. welcome back. the florida letter carrier who violated national air space by landing his gyrocopter on capitol hill last month could face years in prison. he was charged including two felonies and due to be arraigned in federal court a short time from now. he did it to bring attention to campaign finance reform. my colleague spoke to hews earlier. >> you've been indicted on six charges, two felonies. was it worth it? >> well absolutely it was worth it to change the situation that we've got in congress right now. i don't intend to spend nine and a half years in jail and don't think i'll have to.

this is a civil disobedience no injuries and no property damage. i'm not sure i agree with the penalties that are being called for. >> but what you call civil disobedience they say is invading air space. have you made a plea deal? >> my public defender has been working on that. i can't predict how that will come out. obviously a plea bargain where the penalty fits the crime i'd be willing to accept that. i never expect had the i was going to walk away scot-free for what i did, but on the other hand, nine and a half years i think is just a bit outrageous. if we can't work out a deal then i'm satisfied with putting it

before a jury of 12 people a. >> what do you think a jury would do? >> i have no idea but i'm comfortable with the -- i can completely trust a jury of my peers and judicial system there. >> mr. hughes says you're lucky to be alive and could have been blown out of the air. what do you say to him? >> i'm a aware he's got perspective. he may not be aware i sent word out ahead. authorities knew i was coming. they knew who i was. i was interviewed by the secret service the year before. he thu they knew i was not violent. >> were you concerned about the people at the mall that day? >> i carefully designed the stunt so no one would be hurt

including me. >> people look at whether it raised the issue of politics or national security specifically that on the nation's mall. what kind of realistic changes do you think we may see from legislators as a result of your actions? >> i think we're going to see nothing but resistance from the majority of legislators who want to keep the system the way it is. >> has any legislator reached out to you and said you know what i'm on board? >> i got encouragement from the house floor from representatives from north carolina the week after i flew. i know that other legislators have cosponsored legislation that is dieing in committee and never hit the floor, okay, until this becomes the hot issue for voters that candidates have to answer to. that's what i expect to have happen. >> finally, is the 2016 race heats up you've watched republican contenders. hillary clinton and others on the democratic side.
9:56 am
who is your candidate? >> i don't have a candidate in the presidential race. if i get free of my electronic ball and chain, i may very well spend time in new hampshire urging voters there to make this the question they're asking the candidates. a lot of people have not made any response as far as where they stand on money and politics. i'd like to see republicans step forward. >> doug hughes your arraignment is 1:45 in federal court. we'll be watching. appreciate your time. >> thank you for having me on. >> that was nbc peter alexander there with doug hughes the pilot of the gyrocopter. he's an interesting guy. that does it for "andrea mitchell reports." "msnbc live" with thomas roberts is next. thanks for tuning in. take care.
