an average work day at a jewelry exchange quickly turns fright frightening. a store manager ready to face any danger that walks in the door. >> for me it's like it's either me or him. june 28, 2013, calgary. few customers are doing business a gold and silver exchange shop. >> we sell precious metals, gold and silver bars. we take them from the stock market. when ever you want to come to our store you buy and sell. this customer comes in and would like to buy gold or silver, we have it in stock.

>> the security video is silent. the the cameras record whoever is in the store from two angles. >> customers were two investors and is a lady selling some jewelry. we were having a great conversation of the finances and how the lookout of things would be. >> standing behind the counter, he is out of camera view watching two men outside the glass door. >> i felt wrong with their presence. i saw them already before they entered the store. i have a switch on my right side i lock the door. i was reaching the switch like a panic button that closes the door. it was too late. >> because it's bright outside, the camera doesn't show the men until they open the door. >> two masked men barge in. one tries to lock the door behind him but can't. >> they walked in. they were like this is a robbery. give me everything i have. >> i was like no way. >> at first the customers are too stunned to react. >> they didn't know what to do.

they weren't sure what i was going to do, how was i going to react. if i'm not going to do anything, why should they risk their lives? one guy had a knife. the other had a crowbar. one guy towards the counter with me with a knife. the other was like don't do anything stupid. >> one opens the door for customers to escape. he grabs a stool and bars the door. >> one of my customers helped the woman outside the door. they let her leave. i don't know why. i guess they had more important things to think about. >> men are so focused on grabbing the gold, they don't realize he had something behind his counter, aluminum baseball bat. >> the guy broke the glass and the jewelry fell in. the guy was trying to pick up

the jewelry that fell into the case and all the other tough. while he was doing that, he wasn't watching me. he couldn't see me swinging the bat. i was like go for it. we'll see what happens. >> with one swing the man is knocked out. >> i think i hit him way too hard. i went with full force and just hit him on the head. he went down. when he was on the ground i was like oh no, what did i do? i could see the blood going into his mask. it was a scary feeling. i didn't know what i do now, you know. he went down. he didn't brace himself or anything. >> the second man tries to drag his accomplice out of the store. when he meets resistance at the doors, he drops his partner and attempts to save himself. >> when i clocked the guy, there was panic. the customer took the bar sotoo.

he was trying to keep the guy in there. for me, i was like why? get those people out of here. >> the maness capes but not without zider taking one last swing. the other would be be robber is disoriented and attempts to stabilize himself. >> he was coming around again. one of my customers saw him. he made sure he would stay down. he gave him a few nice kicks and kicks the knife away. >> the customer steps out of the store and signals for local firefighters that happen to be across the street. >> they come over looking at situation. they exactly weren't sure what was happening. they could see he was wearing a mask. they tried to talk to him. he was still thinking he would get away. i don't think he was thinking they were going to hold him down. they're firemen not cops.

texas. assistant store manager mckinney reports to her shift at the dollar general. >> that particular day it was pretty busy. it was constant traffic in and out. >> by the end of the day the heavy store traffic winds down. security videos show one employee manning the register in the front while mckinney works in the back. >> i head towards the back to make runs, double check aisles, make sure everything is nice. >> about 10:0 p.m. a man walks through the door. within seconds, his intentions are clear. the video shows him make a v-line toward the register. he sticks what looks like a pistol in the cashier's back. mckinney several aisles away has a hunch something is wrong. >> when it got too quiet, i realized something was wrong. i was making my way to the

warehouse area. she usually doesn't scream my name across the store. i went to the front to see a what was going on. she wasn't in her normal area. i went looking for her in the break room. she was there with the robber. he had the gun held to her head. i freaked. i literally jumped back. he was like oh no. get back in here. >> in the break room they're out of camera view. >> he was telling us to get on the ground. he was asking about the money. >> frightened the women do as they're told. security camera video shows the man forcing the cashier to lock the front door. then he takes them to a storage room in the back. he demands mckinney tie up her coworker. >> i was like i can't do that. he said do it. i got on the ground and did it as loosely as i could. then he was like okay, let's go to the front and get the money. mckinney thoughs about the time

pass word protected safe where extra cash is stored. he's like goo ahead and set the safe. i know we have to wait nine minutes. i'm like oh my gosh. he knows there's another area. >> mckinney passes in the pass word. with nine minutes to wait, the robber makes use of the time. he has mckinney take out the cash drawer from the register. it's emptied into a plastic bag off camera. >> he did last minute shopping. >> he wanted to get cigarettes. i go to the cigarette cabinet. he only wanted one brand. we go back. he's like how much more time for the safe? >> mckinney does a look at time safe. >> i tell him i'm waiting and

waiting. he's like do you really want to lose your life over this money? i was like i'm not doing anything. i'm trying to open this safe. he was like i'm not playing with you. now he's getting angry. >> with two minutes left before the safe unlocks, the robber wants one more item. >> he said show me where the bags are. he said i want a black on black bag. i'm like this guy is really just living it up. i give him the bag. we're putting it into the book bag now. the money bag falls. natural reaction to both of us is go pick it up. he gets down with me. his hoody falls over his head. he's all discombobulated. i reached over and grabbed it. the gun just crushed. >> it turns out the gun is a toy. >> after that it was over. i was like wait a might be. you've been terrorizing us for

20 minutes, and you don't have a real weapon. at that time i was like game on. >> he may not have a real gun, but he's an imposing figure. still she lungs at him. the petite woman drags the 200 pound thief to his knees. >> a whole new reaction came over me. i felt sense of empowerment almost. i was really trying to hurt him. i really wanted to hurt him. i wanted to beat this guy down for doing this to us. i was a angry. at one point during the struggle i was like but i can't continue to fight this guy. i've got to get help. this guy is bigger than me. i decided okay, let me stop fighting and get out of here. that's when i tried to run. he had my wrist. i was like you can come with me. i decided to drag him to the door. i was going to get out of there. i was going to get help some way. i'm struggling to get the door open. he jumps on my back. i'm like oh my gosh. this is not happening. i finally get the door unlocked

and fall out the door. he's on top of me. then he sees there's someone else outside. he's like okay, he high tails it off. >> mckinney's co worker in the back room wiggles free from the loose knot. she dashes to the front. mckinney calls police. when officers arrive to investigate, it doesn't take long to crack the case. >> he dropped his keys. he ran to his car and couldn't leave. he hid down in the seat. when the police came, they got him. >> the masked man is michael gaines convicted of robbery and sentenced to six years in prison. he isn't charge add with arm robbery because his gun was a fake. police also learn his visit to mckinney's store wasn't his first. >> he was a customer. i recognized his voice. i was like i can't believe this is someone i've dealt with and

suspicious man wandering around his property in the wee hours of the morning. he scrolls through the home security videos for a look. >> we were watching the cameras watching for the man to come down the fence line into the yard. he comes from inside the house. i haven't been that scared in a very long time. >> meyers doesn't save the video but keeps screen shots of the man that stays in his unlocked basement several hours leaving at day break wearing a momento. >> he had stolen one of our shirts from the studio downstairs. you could see when he was leaving he was casing the the place. >> meyers upgrades the security system by adding a chime sound that alerts him when someone walks through the gate. now he's watching the man watch through his yard and head for the side door that leads to his work space. >> he can't see me. sure enough it's like the same guy.

bicycle with his mother close by. >> he was easily within my view. you never really worried about your child. >> what she doesn't see is the neighbor's dog on the other side of this suv. without warning the dog attacks -- >> it wasn't really until i heard him scream that i realized something was terribly wrong. when i saw the way he was jerking him and pulled him off the bicycle. it never crossed my mind that the dog could have my son's leg. i assumed because of the pulling motion he had my son's hands. and it wasn't until later that i realized oh, my gosh, he had my son. and just as quickly, tara the cat springs into action defending her boy. >> i have no idea what i would have done without her. she tackled the dog completely and chased him away and took care of my son when i had no idea what was happening. >> erika runs off to make sure the dog isn't coming back.

roger rushes home from work to be with his family. he's talking to the police when he has a revelation. >> that's when it dawned ton me to check the footage from the security cameras. >> i grabbed my laptop and logged in and sat out front with the officer and watched for first time. that was when we saw tara come out and first reaction to that's was oh, my god, did you see that cat? i think we rewound the tape about four or five times, just rewatching it. you see tara run after him. she flips around right then, sees erika, my wife coming to jeremy's aid and takes off again after the dog and chases him further to make sure he's clear then comes back and stood by jeremy's side the entire time. >> i definitely say tara was acting on her fight or flight response. she definitely was ready for that fight. she was putting up the battle at that moment. >> she did that out of a sense of love for him. there's no other way a cat would want to take on a dog of that

size. we had dogs in the yard before, never gone after that. for her it was a fight response to help jeremy out. >> jeremy gets ten stitches in his leg and makes a full recovery. roger posts the video of the fearless feline online it goes viral and gets national media attention. >> the video lighting up the internet shows a young boy being attacked by a neighbor's dog and then an unexpected hero comes to the rescue, his pet cat, tara. >> tara has reacted like any cat would, you know, with request for more salmon. >> she's definitely wanting to stay in the spotlight as far as she's concerned being pamperred and loved on. >> we've always tara, it's never been an issue but she definitely deserves a little bit extra every day. >> tara is my hero.
