it's monday june 1st. right now on "first look," america exposed as of midnight our national security agency has lost certain powers from the patriot act. the outpouring of sympathy for the vice president's son continues to grow. plus the latest on secretary of tate john kerri's broken drone. a drone accident in the middle of a concert and is there an east or south in kim ya's future? >> good monday morning. i'm betty nguyen. thanks for joining us. drama in washington. key sections of the patriot act

expired. senators failed to extend the legislation. now the national security agency will pull the plug on certain parts of the patriot act. this legislation has left some senators just scrambling this morning. what happens now? >> reporter: well they try to figure out if they can bring some of the tools back. we've been talking a lot about the phone records. that is a key part of the patriot act but there are other tools that are used to track terrorists that as of this morning they've expired and they're no longer legal. the government can no longer track lone wolf terrorists or use roving wiretaps to track suspects who change phones. >> it give us the ability to track moves individuals are making. >> reporter: those parts of the patriot act expired a midnight.

>> isn't this as critical as it's ever been given the fact that the middle east is literally on fire and we are losing everywhere. >> rand call blocked it. he's running for president. critics accuse him of putting politics over national security. >> some of them i think secretly want there to be an attack on the united states so they can blame it on me. >> reporter: they failed to pass the usa freedom that that would leave phone records with phone companies but allow a government situation. >> we have to be aware that we're under threat. >> reporter: the senate could fix this within days. mitch mcconnell says he'll back the freedom act which he had opposed. >> reporter: the white house in a statement is urging the senate to act quickly. we may see that because now that mcconnell is supporting it they are on track and 77 of the lawmakers voted to try to push that forward.

they're now on track for a final vote on that alternative sometime tomorrow or possibly as late as wednesday. >> we'll be watching. thank you so much tracy. the secretary of state is expected to arrive in boston. he broke his leg while biking. his tire hit a curb sending him tumbling. he never lost consciousness. he was air lifted to geneva and is expected to make a full recovery. the state department spokesman says he's in great spirits. secretary kerri was there for meetings with iranian diplomats about limiting iran's nuclear program. he was scheduled to be in paris tomorrow. his office now says he will take part in that meeting remotely. there has been anout pours of sympathy after the death of beau biden. he was elected delaware attorney

general twice and was a front runner for delaware governor in 2016. he was a popular politician and decorated veteran. there's been a bipartisan outpouring of grief. >> beau biden was known to many as a dedicated public servant, a loving father of two, and a devoted partner to the woman he loved. >> delaware is a better place because of beau. our country is a better place because of beau, and the world is a better place because of beau biden. >> the president and mrs. obama visited the home of the vice president yesterday. the president issued a statement calling him a big hearted and deeply faithful man who made a difference in the lives of all he touched and he lives on in their hearts. he was diagnosed with brain answer in 2013. he quietly reentered the hospital in may. beau biden died surrounded by

his entire family. this morning we have some good news in the soaked south. texas will be drying out. clear weather is in the forecast for some spots. the epic flooding there and in oklahoma has killed 31 and 10 are still missing. now there is a new concern. a spike in snakebites. the high water is flushing them out and dallas at children's medical center has seen six make bites in less than two weeks. >> i tried moving the snake with the woodchip and it just bit me. >> in dayton texas, a wild scene. cowboys saving 200 trapped cattle. they were surrounded by alligator infested water. they were led over 70 miles to safety. a convoy of santas they brought smiles to tornado victims. they collected toys to bring to children in van, texas. that up to was hit by a killer

unit snapped. it fell. ten people on the ground were hurt. nothing serious. no word on why that cable snapped. in nebraska a reptile keeper is bit by a ka moe toe dragon. a woman was doing work when it bit her hand. we hear that everything is going to be okay. firefighters in los angeles made a rescue yesterday when a woman got stuck for two hours in the chimney of a school. she was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. this may be connected to an earlier report of a woman threatening to jump off a roof. >> a pig escapes from its owner and was terrorizing the town. that doesn't look like a -- it kind of terrorized the backseat of that car. the big guy left a huge mess in the backseat and a smile in the picture to boot. 50 shades of bernie sanders?
