good morning, everyone. i'm tamron hall. two murderers described as extremely dangerous has now expanded into canada and mexico. this morning new questions are being raised about whether the men had inside help pulling off their escape from a maximum security prison in upstate new york. the search for richard mack and david swet is now in its third day and they say the men literally could be anywhere. the state of new york is offering a $100,000 reward. over the weekend agents searched homes and cars chasing over 150 leads. officials are separately investigating how the two carried out their plot. police say mack used power tools to cut steel walls behind the beds before climbing on a catwalk. then then broke into another brick wall cut in and around a pipe before shimmying the prison
8:01 am
wall and breaking out of a manhole a block away. many say the plot is reminiscent of "the shawshank redemption," a popular movie, and they also left a note reading, "have a nice day." governor cuomo said the men definitely had help. >> i don't believe they could have acquired the equipment they needed to do this without help and we have a separate investigation that's going through exactly that question. you have three types of employees at a prison. you have the guards you have civilian employees, and then you have private contractors who come in to do work and we're going through the civilian employees and the private contractors first. >> nbc john yang joins me now in new york which this morning is on a virtual lockdown there. i know you've been there all morning long. tell us about the search that's happening in that area even
8:02 am
though now we're being told they're looking at canada and possibly even mexico. >> reporter: tamron, as you say, they don't know where they are. they don't know if they're still holed up here. they've had very tight security in this community. they've had checkpoints literally surrounding this town to get in and out, just to get from my hotel to nearby plattesburg, i have to go through four checkpoints to have my car checked every morning. they're locking down the schools schools. once the children got into class this morning, the outside doors were locked. they are very cautious here. this is reminiscent, as you said, to "the shawshank redemption." unlike the characters in that movie, these guys are convicted killers. >> these are very dangerous individuals. the police ask the public to take no chances, make no efforts to apprehend them and report any suspicious activity. if you see something, say
8:03 am
something. they could be out of state, but they still could be holed up here in dannemora. we had a rapid response. we're leaving no stone unturned. >> reporter: they had a rapid response but they still don't know how much of a head start these two men had. they stuffed their bunks with bundles to make it look like they were sleeping. they're unsure for that reason. they can't tell us when exactly the last time they know they were in prison because they were -- they stuffed their bunks so they may have fooled the guards earlier on. they don't know where they are. they could be in canada which is 25 miles away. one of the men, richard mack previously had fled to mexico after one of his crimes in the 1990s, rather so they have alerted authorities there and in the southwestern united states. they don't know whether they're still together or whether they split up. as you said they think they had

8:05 am
elaborately? >> you can't track them with cell phone records and things like that. these guys planned this so well i doubt they would go someplace where the police would look for them first, like canada. i believe they would go somewhere else. >> so often when we find an individual on the run, they're often arrested within their area whether it's near the prison or they try to go back home hoping for some kind of support there, and they're often caught in their hometowns. >> they're going to pull all the records of everybody that has visited them, every phone call every piece of mail and they'll try to establish links of who helped them do this. >> how would they do that? >> there is record of anybody who came to visit them phone calls, et cetera. you can create a link of phone calls either as a contractoregon or within the prison themselves. >> governor cuomo believes they had help from an inside job down to the power tools. what does your investigation background tell you here?
8:06 am
>> definitely. they had to be cordless too. who was actually recharging these batteries for them? nobody baked a cake without a saw. let's catch these guys and figure out what went wrong here. >> thank you so much for your time. we greatly appreciate it. developing now in texas, naacp leaders are demanding an independent investigation after a disturbing cell phone video shows a police officer pulling his gun on teenagers at a pool party. mckinney police say they got a call friday that several teens who did not have permission to be at the pool were refusing to leave. at one point an officer can be seen throwing a teenage girl to the ground and then waving his gun at others. that officer now being identified by the dallas morning news as corporal eric casebolt. today mckinney's police chief will meet with naacp leaders and at least two rallies are scheduled. jason has the latest.
8:07 am
>> reporter: the video shows a mckinney police officer throwing down a 14-year-old girl in a bikini, then pulling a service weapon on two boys. three officers initially responded to a disturbance call at a party at a community pool. cameras didn't capture what led up to this fist fight or anything else before police arrived. but when they did one officer is seen trying to reason with the crowd. >> don't take off running once the cops get here. >> another . >> reporter: another takes a much more direct approach. >> i told you to stay! get on the ground! >> reporter: after warning a group of girls to get back the officer had enough. jade bicari captured a different

8:09 am
arrest. his attorney is trying to deal with the charges who knew the young woman. he said he was actually trying to talk to the girl saying be still, we've called your mom, everything is going to be okay. then he had a gun pointed at him and was arrested. >> so the mckinney mayor, brian laughlin, said i'm disturbed by the pictures depicted in the video. we'll continue to work with community leaders as we follow this investigation. what do we know about this officer's background? i've asked that because i've looked at the video now multiple times, and it seems like the first glimpse of the officer that we see is a person barrelling out. he does a flip roll maneuver, not just what you're seeing here, but we thehave the video cut where he's racing in and does a flip move with these kids. what do we know about his background? >> then at the end of the video
8:10 am
we see him berating the kids saying they were part of a mob and mad that they made him run and chase them. he is officer casebolt. he is a corporal a navy veteran. he was just promoted into a supervisory capacity at the mckinney police department with about four other officers last year. we believe he was the most senior officer on the scene, and you saw in one scene where he actually drew his weapon at the two young men. the officer next to him seemed to be kind of telling him, whoa seeming to physically calm him down. what the attorney for the young man that was arrested told me he's talked with other officers on the scene. none of them seem to be in this sort of amplified demeanor and he was the only officer that actually used profanity with the children. >> you see a couple adults there. i'm basing this just on the photograph. this man, for example, in the khaki shirt and denim shorts. is that a parent or an officer? he's allowed to get very close
8:11 am
with no restrictions, but the kids and others are being told to sit down and shut up. >> and this is one of the things that's at issue. the people that i've spoken with who are relatives of or actually even some of the kids who were at the party are saying that white members of the community who were just members of the community, they were not police officers -- >> so that's not an undercover officer? >> no. these were neighbors. and the two women who prompted the 911 call at least according to the attorneys i'm speaking with, are being accused of striking two teenagers, one who was 19 and one who was 14 years old, then they called 911, and what the young people who talked with me or who talked with other members of the press have said is that the police officers essentially ignored all of the white citizens and went right for the black teenagers. >> a lot of allegations coming in here. we know it is under investigation. the next generation action network said they're planning to hold a rally today. we'll see what they have to see. thank you for joining us. i want to take you to breaking news. officials in boston are speaking out about the investigation into
8:12 am
the alleged terror plot last week a deadly shooting of 26-year-old asheed rahim. they're seeing what happened when that individual took out a serrated knife and attempted to attack officers there. >> hi investigation is completely separate and we respect that. our agents are cooperating fully with his investigation and with our investigation. thank you. >> thank you and i just want to thank fbi agent chad and attorney connelly for all their work. this is 24/7 surveillance by the task force. we were continually kept in the loop as far as communication goes leading up to this, and all of us knew the plot as far as what was unfolding.
8:13 am
i think no one could have anticipated what happened that particular morning. obviously, when you watch the video, you'll see -- and keep in mind, they know in their minds the intent of the individual who is proceeding across the parking lot. when they approach him having no guns you're going to see the video unfold and quickly see how they're backing up how the threat became eminent and the results are necessary. so there's obviously a double intent here and there's questions asked about why the officers used any other force. this guy had malicious intent and our officers were faced with that both the fbi and the boston, and the video will speak for itself but i think we averted a serious tragedy that day, and i can't say enough for
8:14 am
the great work that the fbi agents and the boston police did that day to prevent a tragedy and keeping the city of boston safe. at this point i'm going to turn it over to pat to show the video and i'm sure we'll have some questions afterward. >> just to give some perspective or context of what we're looking at here this is a surveillance camera affixed to the burger king -- >> still need to be down. >> this is washington street. again, to give you some context and perspective. this is headed inbound on

8:20 am
>> what you're going to see here is the second video we made available for all of you. this is an enlarged version, a zoomed-in version. it will also have a yellow circle that will show you where mr. rahim is during the encounter. when we zoom in it does become somewhat pixulated. and that is mr. rahim walking now toward the area of the bus stop.

rahim. they are playing this for the public and the media, this after questions were raised if the use of deadly force was excessive. police said at the time this individual lunged at officers with a serrated knife. it is under investigation. the district attorney for that area says they have not made any findings yet but the investigation will require a great amount of work. the family alleged that the suspect was shot in the back. that according to authorities, was not the case. he was shot while facing the officers who had been surveilling him for some time. as you can see this happened right in front of a cvs store, but this surveillance video was taken from a fast food chain not very far away. a number of policing experts have come out and said even though this individual had a knife, it took a split second for a person to charge an
8:24 am
officer with a knife and injuring them, for example, in the abdominal area which could be fatal. so the fact this individual had just a knife does not mean he was not able to put the lives of the officers in danger. we are now seeing this surveillance video, which was shown last week, by the way, to a number of community leaders who were concerned that there was an issue of excessive force. many of those community leaders now supporting the police department after seeing this surveillance video. again, our first look at what officials say is the update to the shooting death of a terror suspect killed last week in the boston area. another individual was arrested later and he remains behind bars. we'll keep following this developing story out of the boston area and bring you any relevant information to this investigation. we'll be right back. ♪♪ in the nation, we know how you feel
