♪ ♪ good morning everybody. it's wednesday, june 10th. welcome to "way too early." i'm amy holmes. we begin in upstate new york with the ongoing search for two convicted murderers on the run. it's been four days since the inmates in dannemora were discovered missing from prison. heavily armed officers descended to the town after getting tips on the inmates. here's more. >> a mass of heavily arranged -- heavily armed officers close in

on willsboro, new york. mat's son speaks out. 40 mile there is the prison break in this lake side community, police presence built up after a tip. two suspicion men spotted ducking into the woods. neighbors say canines picked up a scent. >> the with whole area is in an uproar and concerned about getting these guys off the the street. hast for sure. >> grid searches like this are conducted overhead with helicopters and here on the ground in open fields and rugged terrain. >> guns drawn, tension high. >> reporter: this is where they've asked us to hold our position. into the wood there's too much cover and too dangerous. officials are following leads on both sides of the prison wall. >> what's really hard to understand is how the correction security staff was not aware of this. >> investigators are questioning a person of interest joyce

mitchell who works in the prison taylor shop where sweat and matt had jobs. on the day the convicts reported missing, mitchell checked into the hospital with quote, case of the nerves. when the prisoners broke free from the manhole, the get away driver never showed. this is the honor section of the prison where they broke out with power tools. they could wear civilian shirts and shoes. profilers who help track inmates on the run say the drag stretches well beyond the prison and farm land. >> these guys are smart and sophisticated. >> thanks to miguel for that report. tirning to that person of interest. joyce mitch sell an employee in the prison taylor shop where the two escapees were. she's mow questioned by police. her son spoke exclusively to nbc

steph any gosk. >> toby mitchell calls the speculation about his mother prison worker joyce mitchell flat out wrong. >> she's not the kind of person to risk her life for other people's lives to let these guys escape from prison. >> a government spokesperson tells nbc news that police questioned mitchell about the prison break. her son strongly refused rumors she was in a relationship with one of the convicts. >> she definitely wouldn't have an affair against my father. it definitely wouldn't be an inmate. there's no truth to that. >> she and her husband worked at the prison taylor shop a job she's held eight years. his parents called him saturday night from the hospital the same day as the prison break. >> there's a report your mom went to the emergency room with a panic attack. did that happen? >> yes. she was in fact in the hospital that evening. i don't know the exact details,

i just know that she was having severe chest pains and concerned about that. >> a lot of people are looking at that and saying maybe she had a panic attack because she was supposed to help them get the car and didn't. a lot of speculation. >> my mom worries a lot about everything especially me. >> toby says the public is rushing to judgment. >> people may say no matter what i wouldn't do that. when you're put in the situation where a family member is threatened or other family members might be threatened or at risk you do a lot of things you wouldn't think to protect your family. in my family my family comes first. >> were there threats? >> i have no idea. >> he's worried for his family's safety with two convicted killers on the run and thinks the truth will come out. >> thanks to stephanie for that report. there's new details regarding the inmate's escape plot.

number. this one has got people interested. 5.4 million job openings added in april. that's the the strong number 15 years. on top of that 5 million people took up positions in april. you know what? the separation rate as they describe it was just 4.9 million. so, a net positive in terms of hiring. that big number 5.4 million openings suggesting that the u.s. economy is in reasonable shape here. the question the markets ask themselves, does this mean employers are going to have to hike benefits now to try and attract fresh employees? let's move you along to that mcdonald's story. this is fascinating. we know steve has a challenges. workers demand higher compensation and they are struggling to break ground on

revenue at the moment against others. one way they feel they can move this business forward, taking on robert gibbs, former white house aid. >> what is this i'm hearing about the justice department and gm and ignition switches? >> this story lurches from bad to worse for gm. we understand the department of justice is looking seriously at whether to lay criminal wire charges against this business. it all relates back to the same story about these faulty ignition switches which have been connected to quite a number of deaths. the issue really is how much did gm know? when did they know it? did they deliberately sit on that information?
