it's june 18th. around 9:00 police were called to the church in downtown charleston. what they found inside was devastating. eight dead two more rushed to the hospital. one of them has also died. among the dead is pastor state senator clementa pinckney. there was points during the night where there were reports an explosive device. police rushed people out of the area before giving the all clear. a planned visit by jeb bush in charleston today has been canceled canceled. joining us now dave wagner. what can you tell us about the suspect? >> reporter: we can tell you at this point it's a fairly general description in some respects. it's a 21-year-old white male they're saying wearing timber

land boots and a hoody. that's the extent of the description they've given. talking about a possible reward leading to the arrest of the suspect. that's expected to be announced later today. about a block and a half from the crime scene hear emanuel ame is the historic church in the area. >> was this a hate crime? >> it will be investigated as a hate crime. fbi would be here regardless because of size and scope of the investigation. they're our partners and would be here to help us regardless. they're here for that specific reason also. >> the only reason someone could walk into church and shoot people praying is out of hate. the only reason. >> what we need is for the community to look at this and

say we have had enough of this violence. if we stand up together we can stop this violence. that's what we need the community to do. i understand people might be angry. i understand they might be upset. that is certainly emotions we all understand. we need to do though come together and help us one, support our families support our communities, and help this person so he doesn't do pit to someone es. >> there's a news conference scheduled this morning. this is the heart of historic district of charleston. this is an area they don't have a lot of crime. the community is reeling over this. >> dave wagner live from charleston south carolina. thank you. our nbc affiliate in charleston has a personal die to the story. she had a close call involving her own family member.

hoody and boots. we know the pastor clementa pinckney was one of the nine killed. this happened around 9:00 last night. reaction is still coming in. the search is underway for the shooter who really now is considered behind this a mass murderer. at this point, we know a prayer vigil will be held at noon at charleston morris brown ame church. officials are expected to hold a news conference in 50 minutes. we're going to carry that live to you. now after pelting texas with heavy rain. we turn to bill. how bad is this going to get? >> yesterday was worse. we have an active tornado warning along the louisiana texas border. it is still spinning in the gulf.

we have numerous thunderstorms. there are areas that saw on and off periods of heavy rain. still have life threatening flooding. it is possible not guaranteed. ardmore, oklahoma picked up six inches of rain. the storm moves to northern portions of arkansas. this will be with us through sunday when it finally exits the area of new jersey and new york city on father's day. over the next four to five days see the forecast path of the rain. it takes it up through kentucky. this won't be life threatening flash flooding. the heat in the south continues. yesterday we had heat indexes as high as 115 around savannah and charleston. today is hot and humid in the southeast again. we'll have numerous thunderstorms. the storms slowly dwindle in the next several days. the last day we could see devastating weather. >> that's welcome news for people in that area.
