debate heats up over the confederate flag and what it symbolizes. after leads turn up empty this weekend in southwest new york we've got the latest development. and how sweet it is, month before his 22nd birthday in a down-to-the-wire finish jordan spieth takes on the u.s. open prize. this is "way too early." good morning. it's monday, june 22nd. i'm ayman mohyeldin. in kabul this morning, the attack was seen on live television. you can see it there, as leaders were meeting, one afghan lawmaker speaking to nbc news from a bunker said there was a

huge blast followed by several smaller explosions. seven attackers were involved. one detonated an explosive at the gate. six others tried to enter the compound but were shot dead. 25 people were injured including five women and children. this is the latest in a rising number of attacks on the afghan capitol in the past several months. we'll continue this story and bring you the details as it develops throughout the day n. south carolina much of the city of charleston spent sunday morning in church not just mourning for the nine people killed while at bible study but in a show of solidarity. >> we have shown the world how we as a group of people can come together and pray and work out things that need to be worked out, to make our community and our state a better place. a lot of folk expected us to do

roof adopts poses and uses symbols used by hate group. >> not until the trayvon martin controversy did he start to have seriously darker thoughts about race and came across white sxremsist websites on the web that fed those, built on those and helped him turn himself into a monstrous killer. >> reporter: experts say roof does not appear sophisticated and tried to cast himself as someone taking a stand writing, someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world. and i guess that has to be me. >> saw a world of white supremacy where he could do something heroic for the cause. >> reporter: meantime, two of roof's friends who say they often let him stay with them in this mobile home in lexington, south carolina said they last saw him on tuesday, the day before the church shootings, when he dropped them off at this lake. >> he was in a rush. a really big rush.

>> reporter: the friends say the next time they heard of him was when he showed up on a wanted poster after the nine murders at the church. perhaps an important glimpse at why he opened fire. >> nbc's mark potter there. emerging narrative of roof's apparent motivations has reopened the debate for the proper place for the confederate legacy in america. vandalized "black lives matter" was spray painted in graffiti. in nearby colombia to protest the confederate flag still flying on the statehouse grounds. massacre has put renewed pressure on state legislators to remove it. it remains to be seen whether lawmakers will do it in a special session. mitt romney earning 43,000 retweets with the message take down the confederate flag at the south carolina capital. to many it's a symbol of racial

hatred. remove it now. president obama weighed in simply saying good point, mitt. in an early primary state, jeb bush pointed to his state's move to put the flag in a museum in 2001. bush said he was confident the state would do what he called the right thing after a period of mourning. marco rubio added this. >> the state of south carolina has dealt with this issue in the past. they've done so in a way that brought people together. the current location was the result of a bipartisan agreement that that state came to over 15 20 years ago. if in fact they're going to take up that issue now, i'm very confident that they're going to make the right choice for the people of south carolina. >> ted cruz and scott walker also said it was a state issue. john kasich added if he were a citizen of south carolina he would be for taking it down. two escaped prisoners on the

run, over two weeks that david sweat and richard matt were discovered missing. now sighting near the town of the vermont border. has confirmed to nbc news that state troopers are actively investigating a break-in at a hunting cabin deep in the woods. the owner approached the cabin saturday and discovered that a single individual had broken in. that individual then fled the scene when the owner arrived. it comes after a massive search over the weekend in the town of friendship new york. hundreds of law enforcement officers descended on the town after a woman reported seeing the two men who matched the escapees description by railroad tracks. as for the investigation itself, it's still taking place at the prison. placed on administrative leave last week as part of the ongoing investigation into the escape.

his attorney says he has cooperated with authorities during the questioning. he has not been charged with any offense. according to a source several prison employees are still being questioned about the plot. republican candidates in the capital to stake their claim in the 2016 election. many pledged to stand up to what they see as hostility to christianity in society and the world. >> i believe 2016 will be the religious liberty election. religious liberty has never been more threatened in america than right now today. i'll tell you this. morning is coming. morning is coming. >> i stood on the side of terry schiavo and her parents. religious freedom is under attack in ways we've never seen

before, whether it's the obama administration or just the general culture. in a big, diverse country, we need to make sure that we protect the right not just of having religious views but the right of acting on those views. religious conscious is one of the first freedoms in our country. >> unlike hillary clinton and president obama, my views on marriage are not evolving with the polls. i believe in traditional marriage between a man and a woman. >> in foreign relations committee about -- oh, this has probably been six months ago, i said you know what? maybe at the very least we shouldn't give our money to countries who persecute countries. any country that puts christians to death for speaking their mind on religion for changing their religion to christianity or for interfaith marriage we shouldn't give them a penny. not one penny. >> new polling sets former florida governor jeb bush had a strong launch to his campaign.

nbc wall street journal poll conducted finds bush on top of the republican field, scott walker and senator marco rubio join him in the top three spots. 75% of republican voters are supporting bush up since march. americans largely unconcerned about dynasty candidates. only 4% saying it matters most to them. let's turn to business now. pressure is mounting on greece and its creditors to keep the country from defaulting or exiting the eurozone all together. joining us loivive from london. carolyn, what is expected to bring to the table at this meeting? >> overnight at the greek prime minister, tabled a new set of reform proposals that will be reviewed by the eurozone and international creditors.

we don't know how these new reforms differ from the ones that greece has proposed in the past. they've been rejected so many times. ayman, we do know many eurozone officials this morning have sounded cautiously optimistic about the outcome of the talks. one official saying that he is very confident that today will yield some agreement. and, of course let's wait and see. this meeting could go well into the night. obviously, greece showing some willingness that it is willing to avert default by the end of the month. and this really has sparked a rally in european equities this morning. greek stocks are up by 6%. take a look at u.s. futures. they're also expected to open a lot higher. speaking of u.s. trading, do keep an eye on the health care stocks today, specifically cigna. the health insurer has rebuffed a $54 billion offer from its larger rival, anthem.

cigna says it's not in the best interest of its shareholders. in a letter to anthem it said quote, we're deeply disappointed with your actions. by that it means the fact that anthem has taken those talks public over the weekend and they've been going on since the end of may. since then cigna has rejected the offer three times. before i wrap things up there could be more consolidation in the u.s. wall street journal reports humana is in talks to be acquired by aetna. neither company has confirmed the existence of the talks. but the"the wall street journal" reports that these talks are ongoing. ayman? >> let me ask you about tesla. the automaker has a particular demographic in mind for its next suv. can you tell us more about that? >> well it is women. we all know women -- they do like suvs. probably to shuttle around the kids to their soccer and
