somewhere. it's 5:30 in the east 2:30 out west. it's the show bringing people together one recipe at a time. good morning. it's thursday july 2nd. i'm ayman mohyeldin. we begin with a justice department investigation into something americans have been long suspicious of airline ticket prices. officials familiar with the investigation say the question is whether some airlines have been colluding to limit seat capacity to keep airfare high. on the record it's told quote vooer investigating possible unlawful action by airlines. they're looking into how long airline executives have used the word discipline a term for limiting flights and seats. the statement is released quote we are confident the justice

department will find what we know to be true. members compete everyday. traveling public has been the beneficiary. series of mergers in 2008 means four airlines now control more than 80% of the seats in the u.s. market. since then domestic airfare has risen 13% leading to record profits. as for the investigation, united airlines and delta have both been told they're being investigated and they're cooperating fully. let's turn now to south carolina where governor nikki haley is now saying the fire at the historic black church north of charleston tuesday night was the result of lightning and arson is not suspected. >> we saw four lightning strikes. one hit the steeple of the church. it burn trd the top down. there's absolutely none. no. >> however a source close to the investigation tells mbs news they couldn't confirm lightning hit the church saying quote, i don't know where she got that information from.

mount zion ame is the seventh church burning. two are believed to be accidents, and five including the one at mt zion remain under investigation. there's no indication of ires being connected or racism being the motivation behind them. a date has been set for the reopening of the cuban embassy in washington. officials are aiming for july 20th date with embassy in havana opening shortly after. this brings high hopes to families in cuba and here in the u.s. gabe gutierrez reports from miami. >> hah that welcomed the muze. the american flag will fly here. this building will be the u.s. embassy in cuba first time since 1961. >> i think it will improve our economy, this woman said.

since president obama opened the door to normal xized relations in december, the tourism industry has surged pulling in $1.7 million. high hopes but obstacles remained. we visited havana and spoke to restaurant owner. he told us he can't get supplies things like spoons and condiments and has to get them when he visits family in u.s. another told us internet access is a problem, frustrating to cubans and barrier to investment. >> we don't have access to the information. >> critics say the obama administration is rewarding the regime despite the human rights violations. >> they're never going to change. the only change will happen when cuba changes. that's not happening any time soon. >> even in miami's little havana and anticastro strong hold the announcement was met by hope from some. it's been a long wait. he left cuba 30 years ago.

about high threat of terrorists attacks from sympathizers. it's the holiday of ramadan. officials say there will be a visible increase in security in the nation's capital which is preparing for july 4th events on the national mall. preps underway many new york city for the firework shows on the river. special teams will be ready to go within minutes if needed. the nypd chief of counter terrorism gave nbc savannah guthrie behind the scenes looks at security preparations. he said they'll do everything possible to keep the city safe. >> we're showing all the security that may make people feel but also more afraid. what's your message to those that want to come out? >> we want to insure they can come out and celebrate and be

secure and confident in police department and others policing this. a series of coordinating attacks in egypt we told you about yesterday. israel's border with the country have been closed including gaza. extra troops from israeli defense forces are on that boarer. 60 soldiers and four civilians were killed in attacks. egypt's army said 17 soldiers were killed. egypt's president is vowing the to crack down on islamic extremists. hours after the attack special forces killed nine members of the muslim brother hood who were fugitives. that says quote, they were murdered in cold blood. 12 people have been detained in connection to last week's hotel massacre that isis claimed responsibility for. let's turn to business.

wall street closed the day with high hopes that a deal would be reached with greece. s&p 500 and nasdaq posted moderate gains. steve joins us live from london. steve, obviously everyone is looking ahead for the referendum sunday. do you expect investor's optimism to last throughout the weekend? >> yeah. we've only got one more day. we've got the holiday tomorrow. quite possibly yeah it was an interesting day. lots of domestic news in the state. good manufacturing data strong adp private sector reports as well. it was interesting going to creditors, he's the greek prime minister saying we may be ready for a deal the market more than ready when it closed. then he said voters should reject the terms. absolutely oscillating on all news coming out of greece. plus domestic news. puerto rico interesting. paid $1.9 billion worth of

obligations due wednesday. obviously the governor of puerto rico had recently said $73 billion of debt was not payable. the electric power authority group was one of the institutions on puerto rico that managed to pay $415 million that was paid. >> we're asking u.s. government to release the monthly job report. what should we be seeing or expect? >> look, we had a block buster set of figures for may number. 280,000 jobs created. the consensus this time around is more moderate. 230-235,000 jobs created. the actual jobless rate could go down to 5.4%. that's close to where the fed thinks the full employment rate may be 5-5.2%. this is the missing components of why we haven't had a rate hike. we've seen rising .2% to 2.2
