9:00 am
christening now underway. nine week old princess charlotte makes a rare appearance for the cameras on a very special day. plus will he do it? team usa is one win away from raising the world cup soccer's ultimate prize. >> hello, everyone. it's high noon into the east. 9:00 in the west. alex is away. developing right now in greece polling stations have just closed. millions casting ballots in a referendum that will shape the financial future of greece. now the vote counting begins. joining us live on the phone, nbc's kier simmons for the latest. you know we are watching the countdown this morning. reporting on it earlier. how did it turn out in the end from what you know and i know it's probably too early to get any indication. >> what we've been able to see for ourselves is everybody who
9:01 am
has a chance and has been able to vote is making sure they do vote. we were at a polling station wheragee agethens has a polling station. and everybody was taking the expense of the elderly. we met a woman in her 80s who was fought in the second world war. and we said why, how did you vote? she said no. she said why? because she doesn't believe they should be dominated from the outside. so people are voting for personal reasons and historic reasons and, of course for reasons that frankly figure. we spoke to one woman who said she is voting yes and said she is really frightened about the future and what will happen if they decide it's known to paying back the billions of dollars in debt in a way that europe has
9:02 am
demanded. so a completely different opinion. but this poll in the next few hours will tell us exactly where the country stands. and then from there, we're in unchartered territory, to be honest. >> what are experts saying when we can expect to get an understanding of numbers from this election? this referendum? >> yeah dwoenlt think that there have been the kind of exit polls you see in general elections back home. but then that is partly to do with this vote was put together very, very quickly. it will be two hours before we know what the vote is. it is a yes or a number so the count be easier than perhaps some elections are.
9:03 am
so this evening we'll get a picture of which way the vote will go. the polls opened and yesterday the no vote was larger in your head. but very very divided country. if it is a no vote then all eyes will be on the market tomorrow morning. even though people are making a point that greeks and debt is insulated from the private predators around the world and held by a lot of national institutions. they will call it for financial and political dimension. >> you know that ten million voters over there in greece it's mandatory for them to vote there. and it is only going to be two hours for them to count that number that would be -- that might be amazing from some perspective here. you were in a polling station or two at least.
9:04 am
were they young voters that you saw? i know this is anecdotal. but there was so much made about the young vote being crucial because they were big no voters. >> yeah. all age there's. everybody trying to get to the polling station. they were quickly organized. people have to vote in the same place that they vote in the last election here. that caused some difficulty for some people. the young, you have to remember unemployment among the young is absolutely off the scale. frightening. >> 52%. >> if we vote no and it's a financial disaster for greece, what difference does that make for me? and at least if we did vote no, we get to make some decisions and we don't get told what to do by the rest of europe. there is that sense amongst the young while others think that
9:05 am
being united in europe is worth having even if having to pay back the debt. >> tick-tok. we have two more hours or something like that. br we get an indication of what the outcome s watching all of that for us live there in greece. the polls closed. it is 7 p.m. in the evening. it will be a late night for keer simmons. thank you so much. developing now also new word from secretary of state john kerry about talks with iran over its nuclear program. secretary kerry and iran foreign minister met to work out details today amid reports a deal could be near. teams from six countries in iran working to work out a plan there in place before foreign ministers return to vienna tonight. andrea mitchell is in vienna for us. what are you hearing? >> secretary kerry came out and spoke on camera about the iran talks to lower expectations.
9:06 am
he was really countering what foreign ministers said in his youtube video the other day. kerry said while he agrees with him that they are closer than ever before to a deal they made genuine progress that, if they do not make hard choices on some of the remaining critical issues the united states is prepared to walk away without a deal. so they're going to work hard in the next couple of days as the other foreign ministers return to vienna tonight and work all through monday. he said it could be a deal on tuesday if they make these critical choices. but he said if there is absolute stall on the other side they're prepared to walk away. he's not set anything deadline or saying whether they'll extend the deadline. i think he was just trying to lower expectations, give a reality check. progress is made. they are closer. they're not there yet. richard? >> thank you so much. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. right now hundreds of royal fans gathering outside queen elizabeth's country estate to

positive paint with that broad a brush that donald trump did, he has to defend those remarks. i never will. and i will stand up and say those are offensive which they were. >> i don't like the verbage he used, i like the fact he is focused on a very important issue for american workers and particularly legal immigrants in this country. >> all right. presidential kanldcandidates responding to donald trump's comments on undocumented mexican immigrants. it is following controversy on the campaign trail. jeb bush speaking out on this issue at a fourth of july parade in new hampshire. listen to this. he is doing this to draw attention which is his organizing principle of the campaign. >> to that donald trump responded this morning in a statement saying in part jeb bush once again proves he is out of touch with the american people. just like the simple question asked of jeb on iraq where it took him five days and multiple
9:16 am
answers to get it right, he doesn't understand anything about the border or border security. i never said all mexicans crossing the bored rer rapists. jeb is mischaracterizing my statements only to enflame. joining me now is howard dean former d in. c chairman and governor of vermont. joe watkins, republican strategist and former george h.w. bush white house aide. joe, we start with you. take a listen to senator ted cruz's response on "meet the press" this entire controversy first. >> i salute donald trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration. the washington cartel doesn't believe we need to secure the borders. the washington cartel supports amnesty and i think amnesty is wrong. i salute donald trump for focusing on it. >> so joe, you listened to this back and forth.
9:17 am
it's kind of like watching a ping-pong game. how, from your perspective, as you see how most of the party has disavoid his comments, what is the strategy behind senator cruz coming to his defense here? >> well, one of the strategies may be to build up his base his following right now. ted cruz is having a tough time. as you know donald trump is number two in a lot of the polls. and he's trending pretty high in some of the national poll as well. so for some of the candidates having trouble really gaining traction this becomes a way for them to kind of maybe rouse their base get more traction get themselves in the news. donald trump dominated the news comments that he's made. they're going to try to attach themselves to this news cycle and get themselves in front of our voters. >> now governor dean you've been through this process before on different side of the aisle. but this early in the game with this sort of narrative out
9:18 am
there, will this be something we forget once we get closer to primaries? >> well i think we'll forget it because donald trump is not going to be in the race very long. while he is in the race this is very bad for the republican parties. you have 16 candidates so people already saying in new hampshire they can't keep them all straight. one guy that everybody is going to remember is donald trump. that brands the republican party in a way it does not want to be branded. i think people are not going to believe that jeb bush espouses these remarks or whoever is the nominee. but it is just not helpful to have this kind of debate. i suppose i was inevitable because the guy that is the most outrageous gets the headline in a race that is 16 people. >> so when you look at this governor. we see former candidates also like m.i.t. romney who is showing up at a parade in new hampshire with governor chris christie. did he that yesterday. he also hosted governor christy and marco rubio for a stayover
9:19 am
that has been said. he also came out this weekend to say do not agree with donald trump. where do you see this former candidate's role? what is his role in the party today as we get closer to election day? >> there is a huge amount of speculation inside the beltway and all the gossip columns that are written about all this. i think it helps capped dates to be seen with mitt romney. i don't think that's going to swing the election one way or the other. i said the inside of the beltway people are right about it. it certainly doesn't hurt. the voters get to decide this and it will be eight months from now. >> is this the moderate branding that maybe some candidates want and need by having m.i.t. with them mitt romney on the campaign trail? >> i think. so mitt romney is viewed favorably by a lot of republicans right now. he's done good things. they need to come down. he is one of the leaders in that first one. >> yeah.
9:20 am
>> i think for the most part that it really helps. the republican party is going to probably need to have a candidate, a nominee who is able to attract independence and some democrats and women and latinos and african-american voters snab is more a centrist. >> let's talk about democrats. bernie sand serz causing a couple waves. take a look at what he said over the weekend. >> secretary clinton has long ties with manufacture the democrats in congress so we should not be surprised. but i think what is equally interesting is the fact that all over this country, ordinary people working people elderly people are moving in our direction because they do want a candidate to take on the establish. . so i think we will get some congressional support as this campaign progresses. but one should not be surprised that much of the establishment is not with me at this point. >> governor i got to ask you. so is this something about where
9:21 am
the democratic side of the ledger here is moving to more pop lift more left than where hillary clinton is? or is this more about style that bernie sanders, nice guy. everybody likes bernie sanders. >> well that's a hard one. it's early. the races are not exactly the same. i did despite the fact that i was running as an anti-establishment candidate, i did have a fair amount of congressional support. john conyers is very respected in the black caucus. and many others. i do have a lot of congressional support. we don't know how this is going to shake out yet. i think the feelings of divisive inside the democratic party are much less than they were when i was running. and so i think, you know i think bernie's issue is very important. the economic justice issue which is the issue for 40 years. one of the really interesting things that democracy for america did in the polling when they were trying to draft
9:22 am
elizabeth warren was what they found is that there's no animosity between the sanders people and the clinton people on -- in the support. they have their choices. but they're willing to work -- to vote for the other for the second choice. bernie had 25% and elizabeth had 50% among the dfa vote cherz are more progressive in terms of democratic party. i think the democratic party is united. i think that's a good thing. i don't expect a particularly acrimonious campaign. >> yeah joe, another part of this, though although governor dean is saying harmonious right now, dana millbank did write over the weekend when you look at some of the things that have been happening on the democratic side of the ledger here is there seems to be some division such as we look at nancy pelosi bucking the president on key issues. we have this example. it's not all together. what do you watch?
9:23 am
>> i think hillary clinton is still far and away the favorite here. bernie sand serz drawing big crowds. he's making some noise. he's a smart guy. he's got lots of certainly interesting stuff to say. at the end of the day, i think if the election is next week it will be hillary by a landslide. so i agree with howard dean. there is not really a lot of rub on the democratic side of the aisle. and i think it's still very early in the campaign. i don't see that changing any time soon. >> lucky. i mean just agreeing on so much. normally you don't get that on tv. >> i always agree. >> joe is a smart guy. >> is this cable tv? where am i? >> yeah right. >> you have new cable tv for under 35-year-olds. >> happy july 5th to both of you. i certainly appreciate it. >> thank you richard. >> thanks very much.

9:34 am
60 euros a dacht you go through that money quickly. they have a day or two much cash in the banking system itself. there is no guarantee if the no vote wins that the european central bank will provide additional liquidity. they have no current bailout agreement. and the imf to whom they defaulted last week will also not offer them any credit. this could be a very serious event, certainly in the short run for europe and in the longer run for greece. >> so they defaulted on that big payment of over 1.8 billion. the first larger everything that you can say about it. what we're not talking about right now is they still have two very large payments coming up in addition to that. if they don't meet those, are we going to see another -- because we had a down week because of what happened. we have seen more ripples like that. >> without a new bailout package, they can't make the payment. they don't have a mechanism by which they can pay their debts to the european union or subsequently the imf again which comes through later in the
9:35 am
summer. so we're talking about, one, a country whose economy has collapsed. gdp is down 26%. the unemployment rate the broad unemployment rate is 25%. as you mentioned earlier, youth unemployment soefr 50%. in many ways while the government says this no vote will give them a stronger bargaining side that, is highly unlikely. it's more likely to got other way. italians portuguese and spaniard may see this has an opportunity to voice their own objections with the austerity measures placed on them over the last several years. and there are political concerns about the stability of the euro that are intensified with this vote. >> so in your 32 years of reporting, how does this stand out? >> well we had a lot of crisis in the 32 years. my first experience was the crash of 1987. that was on its own the biggest stock market crash in the history of the united states in a single day. this is a longer lasting, it's
9:36 am
going to be a more protract add fair. we don't know where greece will get their money. from we don't know how this affects the integrity of the euro as a currency and the euro zone as a group. these are questions that will play out over time. what we do know is that greece has precious little time to get funds. like i said 600 million euros in the banking system which means they have a day or two of cash on hand. so this means more pain for the greek people. it may mean the government of mr. siprus falls. what they need in the near term is cash. this vote doesn't bring them closer to that without a deal. >> bad news thumbs down for greece if it does turn out to be no is what you're saying. >> we have to watch market reaction around the world which could be severe in europe. china, as you may have heard, has fallen 30% in the last 2 1/2 weeks. they're trying to stem problems in their markets. concerns about puerto rico here at home which are not the same. >> right. >> but they're in the background. it could be a rough day for wall street. >> as we look at futures and i
