i'm betty nguyen. the u.s. women are on top of the world this morning. the fans were out in droves to support the women against defending champ japan. two minutes into the match this happened. >> two-inch height advantage over japan. goal! >> the americans strike with the first of carlie lloyd's goals in the game of her life. a corner kick and lloyd strikes again, stunning the japanese team with the u.s. taking a 2-0 lead in under five minutes. less than ten minutes later, it was lauren holiday's turn to kick the back of the net, as the u.s. dominated the first 15 minutes of play. the most jaw-dropping goal of the cup? a bullet from midfield toward the goal when she notices japan's goalie. they completed the hat trick.

returning the cup to america after 16 years and our nation's third women's world cup. congratulations, ladies. to wall street it is buckling up to what could be a wild ride today after greece's resounding no vote on austerity measures. hours ago the greek financial minister announced he is resigning. all making for uncertain and uneasy days ahead for europe. nbc's keir simmons reports. >> reporter: greeks have been out in the streets of athens after the vote sent shock waves around the world. the voters here backed him by more than 60%. while greeks are celebrating, the days ahead may be difficult for the unity of europe. greeks flooded into athens main square. they believe greece is making history again. people here are dancing, in definesde defiance of europe.

they're celebrating like they just won the super bowl like they just won their freedom. overwhelming "no" vote emerged. the vote against austerity is a show of solidarity that will put them in a better bargaining position with europe and force a reduction in the massive greek debt. >> how quickly do you think you can get a deal? >> 24 hours. >> reporter: not all greeks believe that this vote will change the mind of the country's creditor. >> i'm happy but i don't know what's coming tomorrow. >> reporter: the very future of europe depends on the days ahead. leaders of france and germany say they will now meet to decide how to respond to the voters of greece. if they refuse to renegotiate, there will be difficult days for greece for europe and perhaps world markets. back to you. >> all right. keir simmons, reporting there. thank you, keir. eyes of the nation will be on south carolina today. lawmakers will debate whether to remove the confederate flag from the statehouse grounds.

feeling the love in a homecoming celebration. latin america's first pope returned to the region yesterday to start a nine-day tour, expected to focus on the poor, inequality and the environment. he won't go to his native argentina, but did get a huge welcome in ecuador. crowds tossed him flowers, balloons and even hats. nasty winds right there whipped his robes and blue off his skull cap. hopefully, he packed a backup one. floridas s visitors at a florida resort fire ripped through the hotel. reportedly lightning in the area. no cause has been determined yet. it's amazing no one was injured. several people lost their belongings. >> the whole fourth floor, my room is on fire. everything that's in there, i.d.s, atm cards. we're from philadelphia. we don't know how we're going to

get home. >> reporter: the entire fourth floor of the building is destroyed. in case you missed it over the weekend, one of those banner towing sing lele engine pipers lost power on the fourth while flying along a beach. the pilot managed to walk away unharmed. a 12-year-old boy playing on the beach was clipped by the plane or flying debris and was hospitalized by injuries. investigators will try to determine what went wrong. for now, many are glad that the situation was not worse. over the holiday weekend, a gathering of two dozen family members ages 5 to 94 were standing on the deck of a rented beach home for a family photo. all of a sudden, that deck gave way. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the story. >> reporter: dispatchers got the first panic calls around 7:00 pm thursday. >> i was on the phone with 911. i just counted people on the ground and i counted up to 21

and i just said you need to get as many units as you can here. >> all off-duty personnel report to -- >> reporter: a deck holding two dozen people including children, had collapsed. >> reporter: they went to take a family photo and they're all stand tlg ready to take the photo and it collapsed. >> reporter: the injured ranged from 5 to 94 years old. >> a lot of people on top of each other. a lot of blood, broken bones. >> reporter: alma arnold was renting the house next door. >> it was truly, truly sad to watch. there were kids lined up on the grass, watching their parents and grandparents. >> reporter: the family mostly from virginia had rented this property for the holiday weekend. they were standing on this corner of the deck. most of the 24 injured have been treated at hospitals and release buddy two of them remain in critical condition. gabe gutierrez, nbc news north carolina. >> tragic there. eight minutes past the hour. time to get down to business

after midnight. dale earnhardt jr. was delayed by rain and severe weather. a high 97 laps and crossed the finish line around 2:40 this morning. it ended in a wreck involving more than a dozen cars. three fans suffered minor injuries. austin dillon's car went airborne and tore down part of the catch fence. fortunately, he got out of the car and waved to the crowd, suffering only a few bruises. jason pierre paul injured his hand in a fireworks accident in south florida. he suffered burns on palm three fingers and one finger could have nerve damage. giants placed a franchise tag on pierre-paul in march but have yet to sign the approximately $15 million, one-year offer. peachtree road race in atlanta came down to the wire on saturday. ben payne was feet away from the

through the midatlantic by the district getting thunderstorms and then big storms are rolling through parts of the upper midwest. that's where today's real focus of severe weather is going to be. our severe outlook, we do have a threat along the midatlantic down through florida. the strongest storms today are going to be right along this cold front that is going to stretch from the upper midwest and push all the way down into the central plains. from wichita up to waterloo be on the lookout for thunderstorms to pop up later this afternoon. a look at today's forecast, temperatures are starting to cool off in parts of the interior southwest, but we do have 78 in billings right now. temperatures in the 90s once again in seattle. back to you, betty. >> dominica thank you for that. secretary of state john kerry and his iranian counterpart have been in nonstop negotiations over their nuclear program. tuesday is the deadline to reach

saying. there are people who think that immigrants coming across are all drug dealers. people like ted cruz is appealing to that group. there are people like jeb bush who are also saying my wife's an hispanic immigrant. there are many -- rick perry was saying there are many who contribute wonderfully to this country who are immigrants. we're a country made up of immigrants. >> don't discount them. you talked about the gop race. how tight is it? we know only what the top ten are going to get on that debate stage. that's very important for them. >> it's very tight. gop on hunger games. 16 candidates and ten chairs. you do not want to be the last one chosen for dodge ball in gym class. you look bad if you're on the b team and people don't -- winning. you win a primary and poll numbers shoot up. so, this is -- you get on the debate stage, people see you. they know what you think about. if you're trying to get attention right now, you're like
