was launched in january of 2006 taking over nine years to make the 3 billion mile journey to pluto. already measurements from the dwarf planet indicate that pluto is bigger than originally thought. roughly two-thirds the size of the earth's moon. good evening americans and welcome to the "ed show." live from new york. let's get to work. tonight deal defense. >> diplomats will tell you sign of good deal is nobody is happy. >> this deal is our best means of assuring that iran does not get a nuclear weapon. >> if the president likes this deal go and sell it but sell it honestly. don't lie to the american people. >> more money and more weapons, not a good deal. >> iran has scored a tremendous victory. they are given their yellow cake and eat it too. >> later, trump trumping. >> a big surge for dronld trump.

vestage of a peaceful nuclear program in iran. but we do have the leverage to do is to make sure they don't have a weapon. that is exactly what we've done. to go back to congress i challenge those who are objecting to this agreement, number one, to read the agreement before they comment on it. number two, to explain specifically where it is that they think this agreement does not prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. and why they are right and people like ernie monise whose an mit nuclear physicist and expert in these issues is wrong, why the rest of the world is wrong and then present opinionan alternative. and if the alternative is that we should bring iran to heel through military force, then those critics should say so. >> and netanyahu hasn't been shy

from day one. he told this poses a threat to not only israel but the united states. >> we think this is not merely a threat to us but a threat to you as well. just five days ago the so called moderate president of iran was at a rally in teheran in which they burned american flags chanting death to america. iran has killed more americans than anyone other than al qaeda. iran is building intercontinental ballistic missiles to reach not us but every part of the united states. and the streamupreme leader says the battle with the united states will continue even after the deal. to them we are the little satan. you are the big satan. and now i think they are being empowered to conduct that battle. and i think that this is bad for us, for you and the world. >> and there is a big concern about verification. the israeli prime minister also
2:04 pm
expressed serious concerns about the inspections being reliable. >> i think they have two paths to the bomb. one is if they keep the deal and the other is if they cheat on the deal. they can cheat because the inspections are not instantaneous anywhere any time as foreign minister as iran za zarit. and you have not even within 24 hours. you are 24 days before you inspect a site. can you imagine giving a drug dealer 24 days notice before you check the premises. that is a lot of time to flush a lot of meth down the toilet. >> seems to me the israeli prime minister's comments were definitely heard in the white house. the president came out pretty determined to set the record straight. he countered netanyahu's argument the press conference. >> as for the pact that it may take 24 days to finally get access to the site the nature of nuclear programs and

facilities is such this is not something you hide in a closet. this is not something you put on a dolly and wheel off somewhere. and by the way, if we identify an undeclared site that we're suspicious about, we're going to be keeping eyes on it. so we're going to be monitoring who the activity is. and that is going to be something that will be evidence. by the way if there is nuclear material on that site, you know your high school physics will remind us that that leaves a trace. and so we'll know. >> republicans have been extremely critical of the deal and most are universal opposed. now it looks like some key democrats are skeptical of the deal. political reports roughly a dozen senate democrats could vote against the agreement. they include senators dick

durbin, chuck shoom schumer. chris coons and tessler. i want to make sure whatever we agree to has verification that it is going to happen. and joe biden was on capitol hill rallying support among congressional democrats today. saudi arabia issued a warning today to iran. the saudis said iran should use the money from sanctions being lifted to improve the lives of iranians rather than using them to cause turmoil in the region, a matter that will meet a decisive reaction from the nations of the region. so you have the israelis and the arabs. the arab world in some cases aligned on this? interesting dichotomy, isn't it? ? recent years the arab world has been fighting proxy wars in yemen and syria. in yemen iran has been

2:08 pm
15'5" years. so can he put up the mission accomplished banner? what happens after that? the president in a very detailed press conference today explained other situations involving this deal, the devil in the details, that will hold iran off from getting nuclear capability. it was almost as if the president wanted to have a chris christie two hour press conference. he was anxious to talk and didn't want to leave the podium. but he's got a schedule to keep. that was the impression i got. he was determined to sell. can he sell it to congress. get your cell phones out. i want to know. tonight's question: did president obama convince you this is a good deal? pulse.msnbc.com/ed, cast your votes. we'll bring the results later in the show. colonel lawrence willis and the colon powell and gentlemen, great to have you with us.
2:09 pm
colonel, the president i don't want to say he was selling hard today but he just seemed so determined to make sure that everybody pays attention to the facts. from what you know this is clearly a very focused deal on a nuclear program and it doesn't seem to go outside of that at all dealing with resources and what the iranians are going to do with it or other things. is this a good deal in your opinion? can this work? >> could there be a better deal ed? yes there probably could. could there be a worse? yes probably could. is this deal one we're going to work with. is it -- and this is the key issue in my mind. is it a better alternative than war which is the only other alternative to assure us of stopping iran's nuclear program? yes. so those answers alone make what the president did today the right course of action in my view. and let me just say that i love
2:10 pm
what dick cheney said. iran had a nuclear capability when i was serving george w. bush in 2001, 2 3 4 and 5. they had a course of centrifuges at that time. and over the course of the presidency they gained some 19,000 centrifuges. this puts an arrest to that if you will along with other key factors of their program. they have always had the nuclear capability. they have a nuclear capability now. it is nuclear weapons that we don't want them to get and that is what this agreement is focused on. >> how importantly is it that the other country sies involvement in this the 5 p plus 1 that they are commit thod all of this. as president obama. i don't see putin out there. i don't see the chinese out
2:11 pm
there. like the focal point of all of this this colonel is coming from the president obama. >> i know yi was very adamant to get it on with. i think it's very important these other countries are involved in this deal and are going to be a part of this deal. one of the opposition members, if you will that i talk with today, a more sane one. more sane and sober one, said to me, well, you know, we've got to be able to bring the sanctions back and so forth. and i said to him, without the chinese, the french t germans, the british and others involved in this you are never going to get the sanctions back. you are never going to get them tight and you are never going to get them to snap back the way the agreement calls for. so these people are very important to this. we need to stay together on this. we need to be cohesive and
2:12 pm
unified. we are at the present time. i don't see any reason that if we carry out our part of the deal that we can't stay that way. >> i got the real impression the president knows this deal. he knows the detail of it all. and he's willing to move forward as the best available option. so what is the best available move now for these countries that have been involved in this? the best available move forward to make sure that this works? are those mechanisms in place? that is really i think where the american people are. how do you know we can trust the iranians at this point? >> yeah well, you know, the president has the benefit of the facts being on his side. he's going up against critics with some terrific one-liners and very often in america, the one-liners win. look at sarah palin and debt panels. completely fals lyly false but that one-liner dominated the debate.
2:13 pm
i think the president is actually on the defensive a bit right now. and he feels it. and that is why you saw the passion and commitment in his discussion today. he understands the opposition is going all out to kill this deal. and he knows what a terrible mistake this would be. look, on the expert level nuclear policy experts overwhelmingly support this deal. the facts are there. this is a solid win for american national security. this is the best maybe the only way to stop iran from getting the bomb. what you have now is this political fight that's taking place where people are coming in and saying things that are simply untrue. for example it is not true that it takes you 24 days to be able to inspect any site in iran that we consider suspicious. >> well let me offer this to you. benjamin netanyahu is going to sell hard to the american congress. is he lying or does he just not know the detail? this is what he's going to be saying to the lindsey grahams
2:14 pm
and the john boehners of the world and i'm sure he'll end up in their face trying to push back on this thing in the next 60 days. >> what does he mean that iran has killed more americans than anyone besides al qaeda? what is he talking about? the sunnis in iran killed americans. the taliban in afghanistan killed americans. both of those groups are sworn enemies of iran. i just don't understand what he thinks he's saying there. the inspection process outlined in this agreement is a very rigorous comprehensive inspection agreement, better than any non proliferation agreement i've ever seen. what we now have to do is get this agreement in place and then put the weight of the world behind implementing it to ensure that iran can never build a nuclear bomb. >> and colonel, your reaction to the lifting of the ballistic missile ban. on eight years. does that really matter? are we kicking the can down the road here?
2:15 pm
>> this is a nonsensical argument. let's just face the facts as joe just pointed out. we've got more nuclear weapons than anybody else in the world save the russians. we are roughly equal. israel has at least 100, maybe 200, maybe 300. if iran were to do anything with an icbm there is no forensics necessary. you know who shot an icbm. if iran were to do that teheran would disappear. deterrence works. it will work here. >> all right. stay with us. we got a lot more to talk about on this. remember to answer tonight's question at pulse.msnbc.com/ed. we'll have the results after this break. follow us on facebook. appreciate that. you can watch my feature "give me a minute" on facebook and get my video pod cast at wegoted.com

billions to spend. your people seem confident they are going to spend it at home. why are you confident they are not going to spend it on arming hezbollah and bashar al-assad and etc. >> great question and i'm glad you brought it up. i think it is a mistake to characterize our belief that they will just spend it on day care centers roads and paying down debt. we think that they have to do some of that because rojany was elected specifically on the premise of improving the economic situation inside of iran. that economy has tanked since we imposed sanctions. so the notion that they are just immediately going to turn over 100 billion dollars to the irgc or the cuds force. i think runs contrary to all the intelligence that we've seen and the commitments that the iranian

government has made. do we think that with the sanctions coming down that iran will have some additional resources for its military and for some of activities in the region that are a threat to us and a threat to our allies? i think that is a likelihood. that they have got some additional resources. do i think it is a game changer for them? no. they are currently supporting hezbollah. and there is a ceiling, a pace at which they could support hezbollah even more. particularly in the chaos that is taking place in syria. so can they potentially try to get more assistance there? yes. should we put more resources into blocking them from getting that assistance to hezbollah?
2:22 pm
yes. is the incremental additional money that they have got to try to destabilize the region or send to their proxies, is that more important than preventing iran from getting a nuclear weapon? no. >> and let's bring back colonel lawrence wilson and. this is a real sticking point for the forensics of this deal. there is going to be a wind fall of cash. and it is their resources. we are not giving them anything as the president pointed that out today. this is money that has been blocked, frozen isolated. and now this money is going to go right back to the iranian regime. colonel, how much of a problem is this? and the president didn't use the word escalate but he did say they could use more resources to
2:23 pm
stop the iranians from spending money on hezbollah and also bringing more terrorism in the region. your thoughts on that. >> let me just keel with the complexity of this issue in one facet for a moment. syria, horrible war going on there. more refugees than any other situation since world war ii. approaching 5 million i'm told now, internal and external. destabilizing jordan destabilizing lebanon and so forth. we should want to put an end to this. we are not going to put an end to this without iran i assure you. we made a horrible mistake thinking bashar al-assad was mubarak and that he'd be gone shortly just as mubarak was. he wasn't. he's there to stay and there needs to be a political solution. it will not be achieved without iran. so that argument about funding hezbollah is nonsense. >> people in iran last night were celebrating this deal.
