9:00 am
if you give a woman or a man, for that matter without his or her knowledge, a drug and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. >> we'll talk to april ryan the white house correspondent who asked that question coming up. on the mend our oldest former president george h.w. bush recovering today after breaking a bone in his neck during a fall. >> yes, he's doing okay. i mean, he's not the typical 91-year-old, jumped out of a plane. i think he can manage a minor neck injury. good day. i'm andrea mitchell. back home in washington where we have the latest update on the condition of former president
9:01 am
george h.w. bush. the 41st president is recovering after a fall at his home yesterday that resulted in a fractured bone in his neck. this morning his spokesman tweeted that mr. bush remains hospitalized in stable condition at maine medical center in portland. we just learned president obama called president bush to wish him a speedy recovery. that's where we find nbc's ron allen in maine. ron, you just got new details about the former president's condition. what do we know now? >> reporter: indeed we did. and the office of the president is now saying that he is in fair condition, that he broke one of the. seven bones in his neck, which is called the c-2 vertebra. they say that he never lost consciousness, that the injury did not impinge or pinch his spine. there's no neurological damage. that he still has the normal use of his limbs, so no for ral sis. they expect the injury to heal on its own without surgery required. that he's going to be fitted with a neck brace of some sort to immobilize the injured area.
9:02 am
and continue physical therapy. and that they are not going to discuss a discharge date or time but they do not expect this to be a, quote, prolonged recovery period. we're expecting to get a briefing about 3:00 local time here this afternoon for more detail by one of his attending physicians. earlier the medical staff emphasizing that they did not think this was a life -- it is not a life-threatening injury and that there was no -- no neurological damage no threat of paralysis. and as you in that clip you played jenna bush hager described it as a minor neck injury. so more information, more clarification later this afternoon. the bottom line is that he is here now in fair condition. he's probably going to be here for a few days is the language we were being told by the spokesman directly aside from this statement. and the situation that doctors
9:03 am
are going to go in more details about as of course wishes -- well wishes thoughts and prayers pour in from around the nation. mr. bush, of course is 91 in somewhat frail health but still jumping out of airplanes and doing other things. we know that his movement is limited. he uses a wheelchair or a scooter because of a form of parkinson's disease that he has. other health problems have brought him to the hospital in recent years. now we know a little bit more detail. fair condition. never lost consciousness. one of the injury to one of the seven bones in his neck and it sounds like he's going to be here for several days recovering from this injury. more details to come. andrea? >> and that's generally from what i know of that kind of injury and from what dr. azar said on the "today" show this morning that is a very good prognosis. it could have been a lot worse if the spinal cord were involved if he needed surgery. but for having a neck injury
9:04 am
broken bone in one of those outer bones in the c-2 is high up. it seems like that that is the best possible outcome for something that obviously is troubling when it's a 91-year-old man with a form of parkinson's that has affected him as you point out. >> it sounds awfully painful though, andrea. a broken bone in your neck. i don't know that it is but it sounds like it is. i would imagine at this point he's been here now almost 24 hours, they are certainly trying to keep him comfortable. when jenna bush spoke about her grandfather she did not sound alarmed. other statements that we've heard did not sound alarmed. again, early on they said that this was not life threatening. obviously a lot of concern about the former president because of his age and because he's a former president and because he is seen with such great affection by so many people across this country. he's the oldest living president, as you know. and the longest married president, 70 years, also.
9:05 am
so a lot of concern. a lot of thoughts and prayers coming to hospital and coming to the family and the family of course expressing their gratitude as well as the nation watches what's happening here in maine today. >> thank you so much. and we are following breaking news from chattanooga, tennessee, where we are receiving unconfirmed reports that there have been shootings at multiple locations. our local affiliate wrcb is reporting shootings at an army recruiting center on lee highway in chattanooga and another incident at bradley square mall as well as at chattanooga state. this is all very disturbing but it is a developing situation. we are watching it closely. we'll follow it and get more information to you as soon as we get it. meanwhile, in south carolina, dylann roof the man indicted in the charleston massacre appeared in court this morning. first in person appearance waving his right to any bond. it was the first time he had the court appearance in person for the 21-year-old who faces nine counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder one count
9:06 am
of weapons possession. you see him there today if prosecutor told the judge this has the potential to be a capital case. trial date has been tentatively set for next july, a year from now. joining me now nbc who was in that charleston courtroom today and nbc justice correspondent pete williams joining us from our newsroom. jamie, first to you, tell me what was his appearance affect what can you describe from that courtroom, the first time we've seen him in person? >> hi andrea. as you say, it was the first time we had seen him. he shuffled into court. same blood mop of hair, the hair hanging in front of his eyes that we saw in those photographs of his arrest and in that video of his first arraignment last month in which he appeared by video. today inern person standard prisoner outfit, stripes across the chest, standard shackles. didn't say anything. int the appear to me that he said anything. was quiet throughout. as you say he's facing 13
9:07 am
indictments. nine counts of murder. three counts of attempted murder, a weapons charge. his defense attorney waived the arraignment which means that the court didn't hear the -- didn't hear the charges but he acknowledged that he has received the charges and his client's received the charges and will waive bail. and one of the most animated moments in the hearing, the judge said that the defense attorney can say that he's waiving bail but the judge none the less is denying bail. >> and, pete williams can you give us the big picture here about the legal situation. some people might be surprised that it's a full year before the trial. >> yeah, but it's a lot of back and forth that has to be done a lot of pretrial motions. the jury pool will have to be selected. and that's going to be tricky too, because if you look at the way it worked in the tsarnaev trial, in this aurora shooting trial in the movie shooting
9:08 am
case. in those cases the prosecutors and the court got a huge potential jury pool because of the issue of pretrial publicity. so that's going to be a very sensitive thing to work out. one of the odder things about this so far, andrea is that the judge on his own last week filed in essence a gag order in the case saying on the face of it that he was concerned about the defendant's right to a fair and impartial trial. well, today in court he said no, what he's really worried about is the rights of the victims' familyies to have a lot of information disclosed. so he said he'll ask for briefs on that by next wednesday and if nobody appears to support it perhaps he'll let it dissolve. >> speaking about the victim jamie, was anyone in court today representing the victims or any of the families? >> yes according to officers of the court there were members of families of the victims sitting in at least the first of two
9:09 am
rows reserved for victims inside of the courtroom. the third row back was for members of the general public and that row was also full. so it was a full house with media sitting behind them. but the victims' family didn't say anything to reporters afterwards and all in all it was a very dignified and professional, if i can say, proceeding. >> jamie, thank you so much in charleston. and as always pete williams thank you. and overnight, 11 commercial flights reported being hit by lasering while flying over new jersey. a dangerous threat that can potentially blind pilots. all those planes landed skafly but it did force air traffic controllers to alter approaching flight patterns. >> american 1472 we've got a green laser shooting at us right off the left wing about a mile out. >> american 1472 is there any injury on the aircraft?
9:10 am
>> negative. >> nbc's tom costello joins me now. tom, let's talk about the faa investigating this. was this all on approach to newark international? >> yes, that's right. there were as you mentioned 11 different incidents. we had shuttle america, republic airline, american, delta, united jetblue, porter airlines, all involved last night with the pilots reporting they were being hit by these green lasers. as they were approach into newark the green lasers were coming from their 10:00 and 11:00 position off on their left. the problem is it blinds pilots as we have reported so many times in the past. pilots who are on that critical phase of either takeoff or landing and if a laser comes in and illuminates the cockpit it can blind them at that critical moment of flight. now, this happens as we have reported before 12 times a day, 12 times a day across the country somebody points a green laser, usually, often a red laser, usually a green laser at
9:11 am
a plane at night and it causes this scenario in which the pilots become concerned they could be temporarily blinded. we have seen a dramatic increase. more than 1100% increase in instances over the last ten years. that despite the faa and the ib if really coming down hard on this. the fine is a quarter million dollar fine and up to 20 years in prison if you are found guilty of shining a laser at a plane. but, andrea, almost always this is some knucklehead, to be candid usually a young man, teen to early 20s, sitting in his backyard and pointing thinks it's a good idea to point a laser up on a plane and it can have devastating consequences. we've seen police helicopter pilots suffer permanent eye damage. we've seen commercial pilots report they have suffered damage to the retinas. take some time to recover from. the concern is that it could happen and then create just a tragedy in the skies and on approach into an airport. so now the fbi and the police
9:12 am
and the faa are looking for whoever is responsible for this latest string of incidents last night at newark. >> and, tom, one of the things you've pointed out repeatedly is that takeoff and landings the approach, are the most difficult and potentially dangerous times in a flight. >> yeah. >> here you've got a knucklehead, an idiot kid, perhaps, pointing a laser at a flight on approach to newark international airport, and the potential for, you know, a disaster is very high. >> when you talk to the experts they will tell you we don't believe that this is isis. we think that this is somebody, usually a young man who simply isn't thinking about his actions. he's not thinking about what he's doing when he points a laser, despite all the news reporting over the last few years on this issue, despite all the attention it's gotten somehow this segment of the population hasn't gotten the word. >> thank you so much tom costello. and now we have an update on

shooting in chattanooga. the u.s. navy has just tweeted that they have confirmed there was not a shooting at the reserve center on amnicola highway in chattanooga but they are investigating the report of a shooting at the navy recruitment building on lee highway. we're going to bring you more details as we have them. let's listen to our
9:18 am
wrcp. >> unconfirmed reports through social media in a situation like this completely fluid at this time. here's what we know outside erlanger. multiple ambulances rush to the seen from amnicola. they passed me and actually here you see one woman being escorted in with local detective, cpd, and appear to be a nurse with their arms around that woman now going into the er entrance. likely to see more family members begin showing up here on the scene throughout the day as they get word that perhaps a loved one might have been injured or even just anywhere near this. you can imagine cellphones going off to anybody on amnicola highway. david, you were talking about the businesses having to be locked down. you're right. erlanger at this time also locked down. understandable in a situation like this. another ambulance just pulled up, that one with the blue stripes that you see right there, no idea if that's at all related to this. of course, they also have to take more er traffic even if it's not related to this shooting. so very busy day at erlanger hospital as well. multiple police cars are out here.
9:19 am
homicide detectives are on the scene not too long ago. they just left. presumably to go check out the crime scene not far away on lee highway. those ambulances rushed past me on amnicola at 11:15 this morning. i was at the courthouse at 11:00 this morning abilityout to meet with homicide detective when i saw him rush out of the building and run out. i didn't know what was going on. it was supposed to be about something else going to talk about. a couple minutes later find out he was responding to an active shooter situation. we'll try to get more details about erlanger as we learn it. family members beginning to show up at the hospital emergency room. back to you. >> we've just heard that lee university in cleveland is on lockdown. we mentioned bradley scare square mall on lockdown for precautionary measures. no shots have been fired. obviously some concern in cleveland. we're not detectives and it's difficult for us to piece together why some of these things are happening. be what we do know is that bradley square mall in cleveland and now lee university in
9:20 am
cleveland are on lockdown. so apparently they're concerned about the potential for something happening there. >> of course berke tweeted it out not only locally but internationally right now and chattanooga is making these headlines which you never thought would happen this go around. >> suspect information, has anything come in that we are reporting? >> the only thing we heard is a white driver of a silver mustang has been reported as a sus effect is. and we even had a report that that vehicle or a vehicle similar to that mustang convertible was seen traveling at high rate of speed. and there could still be activity in the lee highway area. that's where the first shooting was reported this morning. that we are told spread to the amnicola highway area. >> and i know i was the one who came on and said by all means -- >> and you were just watching

wrcb, our nbc affiliate in chattanooga. what we do know is there was a report of a possible shooting at the navy recruitment center. not at other facilities. no reported shooting at a nearby mall which was locked down on a precautionary basis. there was also a lockdown at one of the universities. you saw the mayor was briefing that they're trying to find out what happened. obviously something did happen in chattanooga and we're going to bring you more details as soon as we get them. we'll be right back after this break. when you're not confident your company's data is secure

9:26 am
i've i've met with the families of some of those folks. nobody is content. our diplomats and our teams are working diligently to try to get them out. >> three americans who have a unique perspective on all this is our sarah sure, shane bauer, and josh fatal. they were hiking in iraq in summer of 2009 and unknowingly crossed the iranian border. they were arrested by iranian authorities. sarah spent 410 days in prison. the men, 781 days. sarah now prisoner's rights advocate joins me from new york. sarah, or from san francisco, i believe. sarah, good to see you. again, thank you very much. tell me about your reaction to the question and the whole issue of the americans and we've been reporting on a great deal who are still in prison and whether this deal should have been done without trying to bargain for their release. >> well, andrea it's a good deal. it's by all accounts a great deal. and iranians are celebrating in
9:27 am
the streets and americans should be celebrating, too. it will ease tension on both sides. it will weaken the hard liner position in iran and hopefully lead to more regional cooperation in combating isis. >> at the same time, what the president is saying what john kerry is saying is that the prisoner issue, while they mention it every time they meet with iranian officials has to be kept separate because you can't solve all of the problems with iran in this one negotiation. that is of course becoming very controversial with critics in congress. >> well, it's absurd to say you can keep the issue separate. the reason that iran is holding three or perhaps four american hostages is because of the political situation, because of decades of animosity between our two governments. you can't separate them. whether it should be directly tied to the deal is really only the people that are privy to the
9:28 am
details of the negotiations can say. i do know that our case was tied to the nuclear deal through the government of oman that started to negotiate our release just months after we were captured and that when high-level u.s. and iranian officials met on soil, that meeting was paved by the negotiations around our release. iran uses american hostages as bargaining chips, as sort of money in the bank to cash in when they need to assert pressure on larger issues. both sides do this. the thing with this nuclear deal that's important to remember is that now that relations have begun to normalize this will not only benefit iranians that have been suffocated under sanctions but it will also decrease the incentive for the iranian government to continue to use the tactic of holding hostages in the future. >> what would you say to the families of jason and "the
9:29 am
washington post" report and the others who are still in prison in iran and who have been advocating for more high-level engagement? >> i think they should continue to advocate for that engagement. it is that's the only way we got our government to respond to us is by demanding that they -- that they take every measure possible to precure our release. i would also say that i am hopeful, guardedly hopeful, that this deal will lead to their loved ones coming home. i can't say that for sure. one thing that we don't know is that whether the domestic situation will change at all in iran. there are hundreds of political prisoners being held in iran. the political oppositionists are still on house arrest. i don't know how long it's going to take until that situation domestically changes. >> thank you so much sarah. great to see you again.
9:30 am
it's been a long difficult trail. i think it was 2010 that you were released and i was in tehran at the time and it's good to see you home. >> well, it makes me think back to those days. this deal is so long in the coming -- in the making. there have been so many missed opportunities. 2010 when he was still in prison the tehran declaration was released and i was hopeful that that would be the end. so i really am glad dwrthat we reached this point. joining us on the phone now is judy walton talking about what's happening in chattanooga. he's an assistant metro editor at the "chattanooga times free press" and let's talk about what we know of this report of a shooting. the mayor we heard saying that there was an officer down. can you clarify what the situation is? >> yes. we have two active shooting scenes at this moment. one of them is at a naval reserve center near a popular park and a junior college which is locked down at this moment. the second scene is at a military recruiting center on
9:31 am
lee highway. we have one officer that has been shot and i believe that i heard on the scanner that at least one person was shot at the marine corps -- at the military recruiting center. that has not been confirmed. >> so judy what we know about that junior college, is that it is on lock down but that was protective or preventive the correct -- >> protective, yes. >> and any further indication about the officer down what his condition or her condition is? >> no. what i heard on the scanner, i believe was that the officer was alert and awake but i'm not positive about that. we had a fairly wide spread scene this morning in addition to the two scenes in chattanooga. there were rumors of shooters at military recruiting stations in nearby county, about 30 miles away at what's called the bradley square mall. they locked down the mall and flooded it with law enforcement. but apparently has been no shooting there. and there was a rumor of potential shooting in a neighboring county to the north
9:32 am
called mcminn, but as it turned out nothing had happened there, although police apparently are on high alert. >> judy had there been any incidents or any warning or anything or is this just a completely sudden incident today? >> completely sudden. according to a witness a man in a silver mustang is started firing shots at the naval center on amnicola highway. we have heard -- the mayor has said he believes this shooter is down but we have not confirmed that. we don't know who that person is or what that person's motivation might be. >> judy walton from the "chattanooga free times." thank you so much. and of course this is a major american city and surrounding area junior college, a mall all on lockdown. joining us now on the phone, carolyn taylor she is on lockdown across the street from chattanooga river park where one of the shootings may have taken place. carolyn, thanks for joining us.
9:33 am
can you tell us what you've heard, what you've seen? >> well, of course the first thing i heard was just several, you know exchanges of gunfire. and then of course the policemen went into the park and then within a matter of minutes, we were surrounded by several other police officers hamilton county police officers detectives, s.w.a.t. i've never seen this many responders to a single incident in my life. this is really really something. >> now, where were you -- go ahead. sorry. >> like i said i work at glass so the whole front of our building is glass so, you noekser we were able to see the incident when it started. and within i would say probably maybe 15 to 20 minutes they came over and evacuated us to the rear of the building because of the gunfire, you know.
9:34 am
the glass front. so then once they secured our building, they brought us back in and asked us to close our -- we have open bay doors because we have a warehouse in the back. so we had to close those doors and lock our front doors and so we are currently on lockdown. >> could you -- can you tell -- >> several, you know other businesses -- i'm sorry? >> was there any way you could identify what kind of gunfire, how many rounds what you heard? >> not really. it was rapid gunfire, so i'm assuming it was probably some, you know some type of pistols, but then you know there have been several officers go by with rifles you know like i said s.w.a.t. team tbi is here. it's just -- like i said the mobile command center is now set up here. so they really haven't told us
9:35 am
anything else. we did have a police officer come in to make sure that we were okay and that you know he didn't give us any more information. >> and, carolyn, right now are you in the warehouse area in the back of your facility? >> no we are in the front office so we can see you know what's going on out front. >> and did you see a car or the shooter, the alleged shooter? there were reports of a mustang convertible. >> it happened so fast very possibly could have been a car because the first thing that i saw were the police officers going into the park. so evidently if there was a car, it went into the park and the police officers went, you know immediately behind it. so evidently, you know this vehicle was -- they were in pursuit of this vehicle from somewhere. i did hear from another news
9:36 am
source that homeland security said that the incident started on lee highway, which is east of us. so i don't know if they were in pursuit of this person if something happened at another facility, you know, in the area. >> thank you very much carolyn taylor. let's hope that you're all safe there in lockdown. you've got the police there with you. >> yes. >> we should also confirm the navy is now confirming in a tweet, verifying that there is a correction here. the u.s. navy confirms there was a shooting at a building on amnicola highway. pete williams is in the newsroom. pete, what are if feds telling you? >> well, it's still very unclear precisely what's going on here. i think we can say with confidence we don't have a good handle on this yet. what we have been told is that at least at the chattanooga reserve center location one
9:37 am
official says that the early reports are that the gunman is dead, that one law enforcement officer was shot in the leg, that two other officers presumably potentially recruiters, people connected with the recruiting center were injured. i don't know what the extent of the injuries were whether they were wounded or whether they were hurt in some other manner. but it sounds at least from our early reports like it's over. that the gunman has been shot dead or has shot himself dead. but in any event, it does seem to be over. andrea you know a caveat this a lot with saying that there's really no clear picture here in washington, federal officials, perhaps the state and local authorities who are closer to the scene, have a better handle on it. they are the ones handling this. federal authorities are still trying to get there. so this is strictly what's being handed up to the federal
9:38 am
authorities by the local officials. but, you know it's one of these things where the folk tons scene are just a little bit busy right now. they are slow to get back to their leadership and then in turn being passed up here. the question we always ask when someone targets a military facility like this is whether this is a kind of a terrorist-inspired thing because of the fact that there have been all of these exxortations on social media. but at the same time i think about the series of smootshootings that happened here a couple years ago with somebody firing shorts at military recruitinger is er iscenters, marine and other military recruiting centers that had nothing to do with terrorism. i think we will have a better idea about the identity of the
9:39 am
gunman and as this gets sorted out. still a little bit confusing here about what's exactly is going on. >> and, pete with us also still is judy walton of the "chattanooga times." judy i'm seeing -- i notice from the erlanger hospital that they have lifted the lockdown on the hospital except for the er. >> all right. earlier today five ambulances showed up from the -- believed to be from the two shooting scenes at the hospital. we had a reporter there that had five ambulances. one person was being carried from the ambulance into the er who was sitting up and alert. and they kept all the press away after that. but the hospital was on lockdown until just now. that's been maybe an hour or so. >> and what we also know is they were locked down in cleveland at, i guess it's lee junior college. >> no. >> there were several areas put -- clarify that for me. >> the lockdown at the
9:40 am
chattanooga state community college, which is next to the river park, which is where the naval reserve center is where one of the shootings happened there's a gate you know they're neighbors. so that was locked down. and then the second lockdown was at the bradley square mall in cleveland, tennessee, which is in bradley county. that was -- there is a recruiting center there and apparently there was at least some talk of a potential shooter, so law enforcement flooded the place and locked down the mall. i don't know if it's still in lockdown. >> so at this stage how many shooting incidents do we think may have taken place, according to local official judy? >> at this stage, all we know about is two. we know about the one on lee highway at the recruiting center and then the one at the naval reserve center on amnicola highway. we had five ambulances show up at erlanger. don't know about any conditions of any of the people or who they are and have not confirmed.
9:41 am
i heard pete say that the shooter is dead or a mayor has said that the shooter is down but we don't have that confirmed from any official source. >> i saw the -- some tape of the mayor and difficulty berkerk saying the shooter was down as well as one officer was shot. but apparently shot in the leg according to one report. pete williams are you still in the newsroom? >> andrea i'll get back to you in a moment. >> pete's on the phone working the story. jim joins us by phone. jim, we understand the atf is responding to the shooting incident. you know atf so well, having been formalerly in charge. can you tell us what they're doing right now? >> the agents are responding from the local chattanooga office, i understand, also from the division in nashville, andrea. and i was over atf operations in tennessee for a dozen years. i'm here in nashville now. so i know that chattanooga area well. it's great police force there.
9:42 am
sorry to hear officer is shot. but they've apparently responded quickly. cleveland pd as well. the fbi's joint terrorism task force, which we are all members of, is the one out of the foxville fbi division there. they're all going to be we re responding. to try to determine. since it's an attack on looks like a shooting incident at a naval reserve center was it an attack on our military? the station in bradley county in cleveland, you know that's you know, 20 15 20 miles up the road in the next county from chattanooga. so we don't know. that could have been just a notification possibly from the navy to lock down because there was a shooting incident at the reserve center. so lock down this center you know. it's not clear, andrea from the reporting so far. so what you've said and what pete said an incident at the reserve center and then something on lee highway. so apparently chattanooga patrol
9:43 am
notified of the shooter you know looks like they get involved with the shooter. some interchange between them. and as pete recorded at least one shooter, may only be one shooter, but one person may be dead. all the agencies are going to be there. they're going to shake it real hard. the fbi's terrorism task force in tennessee, all has been very good active all the agencies involved. and they will shake it and see if there's any kind of a connection to that or is it workplace violence or you know a lone inspired actor, as we see so much of these days. so just have to wait and see today if they can determine what that is. >> and jim, right now we've got a local reporter from wrcb outside erlanger hospital. >> clarify thoon last point. there are two heavily armed police officers with chattanooga police department guarding the er entrance at erlanger hospital. they do have high-powered
9:44 am
assault rifles in their arms. we went to go get more information from them. they turned us away. erlanger asking us to stay across the street where we are now. this will be the media staginger for the rest of the day. we went up to approach ceo kevin spiegel wither langer to get more information on the situation. he referred us to the chattanooga police department. i know channel 3 news reporter will be meeting with their public information officer shortly on amnicola highway to get more information. also, about ten minutes ago mayor andy berke met here and went inside the hospital. just spoke with the mayor's public relations person. he will not be available for an interview at this time. he's inside erlanger waiting to meet with chattanooga police chief fletcher at this point we hope to get more information from both chief fletcher and from mayor andy berke. this is officer involved shooting. possible this officer is inside this hospital getting treated at this point which leads us to believe it's possible that chief
9:45 am
fletcher will come to erlanger hospital. chief fletcher was in knoxville today for gang meeting i'm told. though he is rushing back to the scene. it's about an hour 45 minute trip from knoxville which means he should be arriving in chattanooga just about any moment at this time. we expect him to come here to the crime scene or to cpd headquarters at which point we hope to get more information. we can hear sirens i've to the distance. this could be completed unrelated. looks like another ambulance will be pulling in. 1:45 after the situation, could very well just be another patient from another situation though at erlanger the hospital is on lockdown. the hamilton county health department next door is on lockdown. if you plan oncoming here call ahead. it's a good chance your appointment will be canceled. family members arriving not too long ago. met by police officers at the scene, at the door. and they were let inside. there's also a blue sheet that is protecting the integrity of this scene. so here comes another ambulance.
9:46 am
of course we don't know once again if this is possibly related to the active shooter scene. from ame emergency service, ems division, just now arriving. it will be interesting to see if they are met by police escort police officers. if they are that would be indication this could be related. at about 11:45 this morning, about an hour ago i saw the last ambulance pull in with the last patient being unloaded from the car. since then we haven't seen any ambulance activity in fact. that person was taken out on a stretcher, we'lled inside the emergency room. that one person did appear to be stabilized. we passed ambulances on amnicola highway heading towards erlanger. we're not far at all from erlanger hospital. also pass along what we're getting on twitter, senator bob corker tweeting out saying his prayers are with this hometown of chattanooga. mayor berke saying this is unfortunate situation. he's working to get more information as well. so the eyes of the nation, the
9:47 am
eyes of d.c. on chattanooga, tennessee, right now as we work to learn more information about what's going on here and will provide it from erlanger hospital. back to you. >> dan, this is jeb -- >> pete williams working the phones and jim as well who knows that area so well is based in nashville. and we'll be back in a moment after this break. when you do business everywhere, the challenges of keeping everyone working together can quickly become the only thing you think about. that's where at&t can help. at&t has the tools and the network you need to make working as one easier than ever. virtually anywhere. leaving you free to focus on what matters most. do you like the passaaadd? it's a good looking car. this is the model rear end event. the model year end sales event. it's year end! it's a rear end event.

9:50 am
police presence is very heavy here. hamilton county sheriff's office is here on the scene as well as the chattanooga police department. eyewitnesses eyewitnesses told me that around 10:45 this morning this man came into the parking lot. he loaded up his gun and then he just started firing off shots. people say that they were scared. they started running and things like that. but right now what i can tell you is i'm looking right now at the parking lot. there's about a dozen homes on the ground right now. i guess that's the area where the bullet shells have currently
9:51 am
lie right now. investigators right now are all on the scene. they are investigating. >> obviously a live report right now from chattanooga. jim cavanaugh, what is the atf know at this point about what this shooting was involved with because there are multiple reports now beyond what the chattanooga mayor said about an active shooting and one police officer down. what more have you heard? >> well, they're going to you know, i talked earlier to the agent in charge. he said they were all responding. but i don't think they have a clear picture yet andrea just what the motivation is and what happened. that report from the chattanooga reporter, you know indicates that a person loaded up his gun in the parking garage and started randomly shooting at this naval center. so that's, you you noeks they've got to sort that out. that could be a lot of motives involved. a whole lot of things that could
9:52 am
be. you know the key questions that you've raised and pete, you know, where is this shooter you know pete said he may be dead. so if they have the shooter located and if there's only one shooter, you know, that should calm things down now for cpd to go in there at the crime scene. they're going to be backed up by hamilton county, so tbi, tennessee bureau of investigation, atf fbi, and all the agencies of joint terrorism task force who participated all these kind of crimes to take a look at it and see you know what's the motivation. cpd will have the ikt the for their officer shot. we have a ticket, in other words, a case responseibility, on a naval reserve center, you know, federal property, you're going to have the ncis the naval criminal investigative service, and the fbi responsibilities for crimes on federal reservations. so ncis i'm sure is already in
9:53 am
route to that it's on naval property. their investigators are tops. so they're all going to be able to sort this out. they're going to want to find out who is he why did he do it does he have any coconspirators you know what's his basis for this? mental illness, revenge, you know incited terrorism, is there any other actors. and, you know where did the gun come from? what other material does he have? we're likely to see later today andrea searches of this person's car and property for bombs, et cetera. >> pete williams what are the feds doing now in new york? what is the fbi telling you as to whether there is one shooter and whether the man is down man or woman, i should say? >> let me just start over independent of your question and tell you what we've been told by various federal officials without saying where this information is coming from. >> sure. >> frankly it's a little bit
9:54 am
still confusing about what exactly is happening there, although everybody i've talked to from various agencies indicates that as far as they can tell this seems to be over. the best information we have at this point and drarea, is that there were shooting t a a u.s. marine corps training center and a military recruiting center. how far apart those are isn't clear to us. several officials have told us that there was apparently one gunman involved in the shootings at both places. that's the initial supposition here. and that the gunman is dead. there are no other fatalities. that some people were injured. a law enforcement officer was shot in the leg. and somewhere between two and four others were injured although i don't know what the nature of the injuries is whether they were wounded by gunfire, whether they were hurt in some other way.
9:55 am
so that's the best information we have is that whatever is going on down there seems to be over, that it's either -- certainly the facility on amnicola highway in chattanooga. >> and nbc news pentagon producer pete courtney is on the phone. courtney, what can you tell us from the military's perspective as to whether exactly this happened and who is involved? >> so the navy is confirming there was a shooting at one location that thawey know of so far, the navy operation support center on amnicola highway. it's also referred to as a navy reserve center. it's an operational support
9:56 am
center. there have been reports of another location that is not confirmed. again, it's not confirmed by anyone in the department of defense defense, navy, marine corps. armed forces career center on lee highway. i'm told it's several miles away. not confirmed by anyone here. what they are confirming is they know of at least one injury. the shooter, which they believe to be one individual, so far they're just reporting the one individual who was involved, drove up. there was some -- a car involved. they don't know if the individual fired from the car at the navy operation support center or got out and fired. they don't know that level of detail yet. but they are acting as if -- they are telling us this is one gunman involved and they believe that the situation is over. they aren't confirm that yet but right now they believe this situation is over which i think pete may have mentioned as well. from the u.s. northern command there have been no force protection changes at any installations, u.s. military installations in the country.
9:57 am
they don't believe that this is something that we're going to see moving along other places in the country. but as of now, the navy is referring a lot of these questions down to the local law enforcement authorities. >> courtney our pentagon producer. pete williams, covering the justice department. and jim cavanaugh, of course former atf agent down in nashville, tennessee. what we know now is the one reported shooting and several victims. we don't know of any other shootings. the mayor is at the hospital. more reporting. stay with msnbc. thomas reports roberts will have all the latest. breaking news out of chattanooga on "msnbc live" coming up next. but managing my symptoms was all i was doing. so when i finally told my doctor, he said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohn's disease. and that in clinical studies
9:58 am
the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. and many achieved remission. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if you've had tb hepatitis b, are prone to infections or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. if you're still just managing your symptoms, ask your gastroenterologist about humira. with humira, remission is possible.
