life or death. another day, another feud involving who else, trump. it's 5:30 on the east coast, 2:30 out west. it's "way too early." good morning everyone. it is friday july 17th. i'm amy holmes. we begin in chattanooga, tennessee where a gunman opened fire on two facilities yesterday killing four marines and leaving three others wounded. it's called an act of domestic terror. the suspect mohammad youssuf abdulazeez is also dead. we do not know the names of the
2:31 am
marines who were killed. >> we have no idea at this point what his motivation was behind this shooting. we are just beginning this investigation. we will explore option. at this point, we don't have anything tying him to an international terror o. >> this comes as officials tell nbc news the suspected gunman was not in any federal terrorism database and not under investigation. his father was once investigated years ago for terrorist ties. that investigation was closed and his father was remove ed from the watch list. officials suspect it may have been isis-inspired because of target and timing. the muslim holy month of ramadan ended yesterday. so far, there's no concrete information on isis ties. 10:45 yesterday morning the gunman opened fire on a military recruitment center in
2:32 am
chattanooga and drove seven miles to a marine corps senter and opened fire again. the second location is where the pour marines were killed and is also the suspect was killed. it's unclear how he died. one defense official saying the gunman used an automatic weapon. others saying he was armed with numerous weapons. yesterday in the oval office president obama promising a thorough investigation. >> obviously when puff an attack on a u.s. military facility we have to make sure we have all the information necessary to make an assessment in terms of how this attack took place and what further precautions we take in the future. i ask all americans to pray for the families who are grief-stricken at this point, and i want everybody to
2:33 am
understand we will be thorough and prompt many figuring out exactly what happened. >> our hearts of course going out to those families. a navy sailor wounded, a marine recruiter shot in the leg. police officer dennis shot in the ankle but expected to recover. joining us from chattanooga, tennessee, dave wagner. dave, what else are we learning about this survivors and what they're saying about the attack? >> reporter: amy, i can tell you now, this is the second of the two crime scenes. this is where the gunman came and shot and killed those four marines. so many witnessed these shootings. first of all the first happened in a busy shopping center strip there. we spoke to the head of the army recruiting center. he was inside the building at the time of the shootings. this is when he said. >> we heard one shot go off which kind of alerted us at.
2:34 am
a second or two went by we heard the first fire. at that time we knew it was gunfire at our location. then we went into what we call active shoot otherer drill. we moved to the rear of the building barricaded in got down on the ground and waited for it to be clear. we knew right away it was gunfire after the initial first pop. most of us in the office are combat veterans have heard it before. we're soldiers shoot all the time know what gunfire sounds like. it was pretty much instantaneous we knew it was gunfire. maybe one or two seconds we you exactly what we needed to do. >> reporter: again, this is the scene where the four marines were killed. it is still very much an active crime scene here in chattanooga. >> i see the police car behind you. less than 24 hours out. what more do we know at this
2:35 am
point about the suspect? >> reporter: we've talked a little about him here. we know he's 24 years old mohammad youssuf abdulazeez, lived with his parents. his dad is in fact a city employee. the gunman not on terrorist watch lists. there is an interesting kind of divergence of opinion on who this guy was. if you look at his high school yearbook entry, it says my name causes national security alerts, what does yours? we did speak to some of his friends who knew him well they thought. they said they saw a very different person. he's what they said. >> i don't want the to see him painted as just a career are terrorist, like this is what he was brought up to do. that's not the kwas. >> it's an unspeakable thing he did. there's no way that it can be explained in any sort of way.
2:36 am
it's awful. but i want people to know he wasn't always like this. he was a completely different person growing up. he was the guy next door. >> reporter: again, that gunman is now dead. authorities very much investigating what prompted this shooting here that left four people dead and others injured. certainly four families and an entire community in fact, in some ways the entire country, grieving over this. >> thank you so much. dave wagner reporting on the ground from chattanooga. we appreciate it. life behind bars or death by lethal injection. that's the question mow facing the jury after it determined james holmes was legally sane when he killed 1 people during the aurora colorado movie massacre in 2012. jacob rascon has more on the verdict.

trump, 27% disagree. trump appeared before a pack add room in new hampshire yesterday and continued to hammer away at jeb bush. >> i'm going to win the hispanic vote. bush isn't going to win even though he'll say five words in spanish. he's not going to win. he's not going to put anybody to work. he's not going to negotiate with china. who would you rather have negotiating against china, trump or bush? >> meanwhile, trump taking to twitter yesterday to dispute comments from the party's 2008 presidential nominee senator john mccain. it began when mccain criticized trump's event in arizona calling it quote very hurtful to me. what he did was fired up the crazies. mccain continued we have an extreme element within our republican party. we did to some degree regain control. now he galvanized them. trump hit back tweeting thousands of people that showed

2:43 am
i personally believe it would be wrong to go before. >> as you remember the president planned to go directly to the u.n. security council without coming to congress. that's why we passed the iran review act manythis the first place. them knowing that or going to security council this tuesday to pass this agreement and also do away with all other u.n. security council agreements resolutions put in place, i'm sorry. i look at that as a front to the american people. >> republican presidential candidate ted cruz sent a letter threatening to block state department nominees and funding unless the president lets congress vote first. this as a poll finds 80% of americans believe u.s. cannot trust iran on the deal with nuclear weapons.
