30 out west and it's "way too early." good morning, everybody and happy monday. it's july 20th. i'm amy holmes. donald trump is not apologizing for his controversial remarks this weekend about senator john mccain's war service. trump made the comments saturday at a summit for evangelical christian voters in iowa. take a listen. >> somebody should run against john mccain who has been you know in my opinion not so hot. and i supported him -- i supported him for president. i raised $1 million for him. that's a lot of money. he lost. he let us down. but, you know he lost. so i never liked him as much after that because i don't like losers. but frank, let me get to it -- >> he's a war hero.

>> he's not a war hero. >> he's a war hero 5 1/2 years -- >> he is a war hero because he was captured. i like people who weren't captured i have to tell you. he was a war hero because he was captured, okay? i believe -- perhaps he's a war hero. right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people. >> after the event trump sought to clarify his remarks to reporters. >> if a person is captured they're a hero as far as i'm concerned unless they're a traitor like bergdahl. he was captured but he's no hero. you have to do other things also. i don't like the job that john mccain is doing in the senate because he's not taking care of our veterans. >> why would you say you like people who don't get captured? it's a simple question. >> why? the people who don't get captured i'm not supposed to like? i like the people who don't get captured and i respect the people who do get captured. >> why did you say that in the context of john mccain? >> you had many people who didn't get captured.

i respect them greatly. you had many people that did get captured and i respect them also. >> reaction from trump's fellow republican candidates was swift and entirely furious. some said he was out of line while others declared him unfit to be commander in chief. >> at a minimum, he needs to apologize in terms of what he needs to do next in terms of the race that's up to the voters but clearly he needs to apologize and refrain from comments like that. >> he's refusing to do that. >> more people need to push him. not just candidates or elected officials. more people across america including those who, up until now, have been supporters of his. >> somehow makes the assumption or he's saying that somehow if you're captured in battle you're less worthy of honors than someone who isn't. it's not just absurd it's offensive, ridiculous and i do think it's a disqualifier as commander in chief. earlier in his campaign when he said something outrageous people said ignore it move on

it will go away. this is what he does for a living. as this has gone forward and he has become a more covered candidate and people pay more attention to him, it's forced people to pay more attention to what he's saying. >> the good people of iowa new hampshire and the good people of south carolina are going to figure this out. and here is what i think they're going to say. donald trump, you're fired. >> and yesterday trump responding to the many calls for him to apologize to senator mccain, insisting that senator mccain should apologize to him. >> do you own john mccain an apology? >> no not at all. when i left the room it was a total standing ovation. it was wonderful to see. nobody was insulted. what happened is later on the republican candidates some of whom are registering 1% than or zero are upset that i'm leading the polls by a nice margin. this all started, martha when

we had thousands and thousands of people in phoenix, arizona, and -- who, by the way, are devastated by illegal immigration, something i'm very proud to have brought to the forefront. we had thousands of people. and he said they're all crazies. he called them crazies. frankly, i think he owes them an apology. >> you can catch senator john mccain's reaction to those comments when he joins us exclusively this morning on "morning joe." now to the democratic side and the biggest crowd yet for vermont senator bernie sanders, who drew an estimated 11,000 people at a rally in downtown phoenix, arizona, saturday night. in addition to the crowds new data is revealing that sanders is attracting more of president obama's donors than his rival, hillary clinton. according to crowd pack the vermont senator has received contributions from more than 24,000 obama donors while clinton has only tapped around 9,000. we learned last week that the

sanders campaign has hauled in about $15 million in total so far. but still a far cry from clinton's campaign haul of more than $46 million. let's go to breaking news out of afghanistan. a local police official confirming to nbc news a nato coalition air strike has killed eight afghan soldiers. it happen this had morning outside of kabul in logar province, area with a heavy taliban presence. bbc reports it as a case of friendly fire saying two u.s. helicopters attacked a checkpoint in broad daylight. sources a local military official who says a checkpoint was flying an afghan flag. the coalition forces office saying it is aware of an incident involving the u.s. military and that it's investigating. for the first time we're hearing from the family accused of killing five u.s. service members in chattanooga last week.

mohammad abdulazeez's parents say he was not radicalized but suffered many issues including abusing drugs. >> reporter: coming to say good-bye bringing her boy an american flag navy petty officer randall smith. >> my son is a hero. he died doing what he loved. he would have it no other way. >> reporter: the grief for this mother and so many others is overwhelming. at church services they remember all five of the fallen service men, a wounded city turning to their faith and to each other. >> our community has been diminished by the loss of these five brave warriors. >> reporter: there was little mention of the gunman mohammad abdulazeez. a link to an islamic verse,

whosoefr shows enmity to a friend of mine i have declared war against him. his parents released this statement. >> we'll remember his spirit forever. >> david wyatt's father tells us his son died a hero when gunfire broke out, the marine a family man, sacrificed his life, helping strangers get to safety. >> he loves his family and he served in the marine corps, his proudest calling. >> reporter: while a police sergeant is still recovering also back at home -- >> he has been my hero since the day i gave birth to him. >> heroes indeed.

a deposition bill cosby gave in 2005 in it he discusses in detail how he would woo women. in the document first obtained by "the new york times" the comedian describes the great lengths he went to hide his behavior from his wife. nbc's gaddy schwartz has more. >> reporter: documents obtained by "the new york times" shed more light on bill cosby's own admissions about how he pursued women, taken over four days of intense questioning, part of a 2005 lawsuit against cosby, filed by a woman who claimed she was drugged and molested by the entertain. in the transcripts he defends himself, suggesting to a lawyer he was good at reading nonverbal signals on when a woman would consent. she does not say to me don't ever do that again. she doesn't walk out with an attitudative huff because i think i'm a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things.

cosby denies giving the accuser anything stronger than benadryl to relax before a sexual encounter but the woman's lawyer said her client thought it was a more powerful drug following cosby's admission that he obtained seven prescriptions for quaaludes in the 1970s that he intended to use for sex with women. cosby reveals he used them the same as a person would, say, have a drink. transcripts show a lawyer asking when you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these quaaludes with young women you wanted to have sex with? cosby responds yes. when the lawyer asks did you ever give any of those women quaaludes without their knowledge cosby's lawyer says do not answer the question. cosby admitting he once asked a model about her father's death to get close to her. another alleged cosby accuser, barbara bowman reacted to the incriminating details. >> it was a sigh of relief to

say i don't have to defend myself anymore. and these other women don't have to defend themselves anymore. >> cosby also described the lengths he took to keep his affairs private from his wife camille. the time write that is cosby once described blocking a damaging magazine article and sending a woman money through his agent so that mrs. cosby wouldn't find out. nbc news has reached ut to cosby's representatives, but has not received any comment about the deposition. no charges were ever filed against cosby. and he has denied past allegations and any wrong doing. he settled out of court with the accuser in this case in 2006. now let's turn to business and a move toward normalcy in greece. banks are set to reopen for the first time in three weeks but with some restrictions. cnbc's jeff cutmoor joins us from london. how much will greeks be able to withdraw today? >> it will be limited to $420

euros a week some improvement on the limit of 60 euros a day. this is banking but not as we know it. restrictions will be in place, capital controls still on the economy and the greek stock market will not open today. so even though there's been progress here on some form of greek bailout longer term for the time being at least, a lot of caution around the greek banking sector and around the greek financials, especially. so just keep your eye on this story. it looks like we're through the worst but there are still going to be some hiccups along the way here. and for greek citizens times still look very tough. whether we all see the same kind of difficulty for u.s. corporate earnings remains to be seen this week. shifting gear from greece we will be looking at a number of u.s. companies delivering earnings over this week. not least gm who we know has had its issues but we'll get

ibm today, have a look at morgan stanley. later on in the week we're looking forward to microsoft where we expect revenue will be lower year on year and apple, where we're looking for a big jump both in revenue and bottom line. two big questions we need answered from this corporate earnings season. the first one, are we seeing the strength that janet yellin has talked about showing up in corporate profitability. and the second one, what impact from the strong dollar on u.s. earnings? it will be fascinating to see how these numbers start to come in this week. back to you. >> all right. jeff cutmore live from london. thank you very much. in just a few hours, the u.n. security council is scheduled to vote on the historic nuclear agreement between iran and six world powers. u.s. lawmakers, even some democrats are objecting that the u.n. will get to weigh in before congress can review the deal.

l.a. and san diego set all-time rainfall records for the month of july. one forecaster with the national weather service calling it quote, super historyic. >> i want super duper historic. >> super duper historic. bad story. so much rain that part of the interstate 10 which connects california to arizona, collapsed under the pressure. one driver was trapped beneath the debris and had to be rescued and treated for injuries. this was the picture saturday in arizona, mobile homes and other vehicles being swept away in the floodwaters. it wasn't just rain. california's interstate 15 friday connecting southern california to las vegas, a wildfire creeping on to the highway torching vehicles and sending drivers running for their lives. >> grabbed my water and bag and flame is already in the truck. >> car was parked on the outside edge when the fire hit it. it burnt the sides, the back cooler. >> it was scary because we see the fires behind us.
