54 years in a political war that has now ended. a protester drenched himself in what appeared to be blood, it was fake blood, but he's been arrested. we'll have a live report coming up from washington d.c. quite a scene playing out there. it was obviously high sensitivity to what is happening after 54 very long years. i also want to go to a developing story following john mccain. he is now saying that donald trump does not need to apologize to him for his comment, that he quote, liked people who weren't captured, but that trump does need to apologize to other u.s. veterans and their families. senator mccain gave his first response to donald trump's controversial remarks just a few hours ago this morning on "morning joe." >> there are some men and some women who served and sacrificed and happened to be held prisoner and somehow to denigrate that in any way their service, i think,
8:01 am
is offensive to most of our veterans. the best thing to do is put it behind us and move forward and just express our gratitude to those who have served and sacrificed. >> and trump's remarks over the weekend drew immediate outrage from other republicans. democrats and veterans this morning a combat of donald trump calling in to the "today" show refusing to apologize and accusing the media of distorting his words. >> see, that's what you don't do. excuse me, excuse me matt because you're the media and you do the same thing. the next sentence was, he is a war hero. i said that. but they never want to play it and you don't want to play it. i do have a problem with what he's doing at the border he's terrible, and i do have a problem with the illegal immigration is a disaster and he's doing a horrible job with that. >> trump made the original comment saturday during a moderated discussion at a conservative summit in iowa. here is what he said about
8:02 am
arizona senator john mccain and being a prisoner during the vietnam war. >> he hit me -- he's not a war hero. he is a war hero. he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured, okay? i hate to tell you. he's a war hero because he was captured. okay? and i believe that perhaps he's a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people. >> joining me now, national syndicated radio host and robert zimmerman. thank you for joining us. steve, we don't often take skypes but i really wanted to hear from you today regarding this back and forth with donald trump. first, do you believe the media took his words out of context here? >> i don't know that they took it out of context. i don't know what proper context
8:03 am
you could put him in. i mean, i was there when he said what he said and i've defended donald trump quite a bit because frankly i think he speaks for a lot of conservatives there that are fed up to here with the republican party. but skeptics tamron have been waiting to see when he would go too far. this might have been the moment. and it wasn't just that comment. if you stuck around in the auditorium a little bit longer frank once asked him about -- the moderator asked him about his faith, if he's ever asked god for forgiveness. he said, boy, that's a really good question. i don't think so. the room got uncomfortably silent at that point. this i think, clearly stalls whatever momentum he had at the moment but i wouldn't underestimate the fact that he's one person in this race speaking for a lot of people that are very frustrated, that are tired of being lied to in the republican party and the republican base. tamron, i can promise you that even right this minute if we had a one-on-one primary this day,
8:04 am
donald trump would win hands down. >> steve this is what i find intriguing. for so long the conservative party from my home state of texas to where you are have been people who closely align themselves with the military and military families. and when you say to me this might put him out of this race or don't count him down i have to be honest i'm stunned as the daughter of a veteran and as a journalist who has watched the conservative party rally around military families and you do not instantly say this should disqualify someone like donald trump or whomever else chooses to take this route after someone else put their life on the line in this country like senator john mccain. >> my father-in-law just had cancer surgery, tamron. he served for over 20 years in the 101st airborne. my wife was an army brat born and raised in kentucky. my mother-in-law watched this entire event to see her son-in-law on cspan all day long. she told us afterward she wanted
8:05 am
to jump through the tv after she heard what she heard donald trump say. i was speaking more on a political calculation, and there is no question you cannot -- you can't win a democrat nomination if you're on the wrong side of teacher unions, and you can't win the republican nomination if you're on the wrong side of the military military. i think we all recognize that. the question of the moment is are there enough people that are angry at what the republican party has done in betraying virtually every single conservative principle to give obama whatever he wants that they're willing to give him another chance because he speaks to that. i think that's what you saw him try to do with usa today yesterday, was to reach those people. i think there is a lot of them. i think they probably prefer someone who wasn't prone to stepping in it as often as he is, but that's what we're going to find out here in the next few days, is can he dig out of this. >> robert let me bring you in on "meet the press" yesterday. my colleague pointed out that
8:06 am
when they questioned the president's birth and even his intellect, he then escalated to the comments he made about mexicans. all of those things were seemingly forgiven and now we're listening to his points about john mccain as a hero to many in this country, and you still have some conservatives saying i don't know maybe he should still be in dot, dot, dot. >> that's exactly the point, tamron. it demonstrates why the republican party, the right wing, is so out of step with the mainstream of our country and why they've lost the popular vote in the last five elections except for 2004. that is because even though donald trump's approval ratings are climbing in the most recent "washington post" poll his approval ratings are 67% among republicans. his disapproval with the general electorate is 61% because of his rhetoric with hate-mongering.
8:07 am
his statements about a war hero is why he's not deserved because he brings up the issue. the republican party failed to respond in a coherently strong fashion defend john mccain, or worse, defending the hate-mongering. >> i want to read a comment from paul wyckoff. he's founder of veterans of america. he wrote in the daily news trump has shown that there are still people who never served but still make ridiculous insulting comments about veterans, comments that should have been left behind long ago in the dark days of vietnam of blaming warriors for the war. trump's asinine comment about john mccain is an insult to anyone who has ever worn the uniform and to all americans. there was no apology from donald trump today. john mccain said on "morning joe" today he does not want an apology, but there should be one given to the veterans who came
8:08 am
back without limbs and are damaged both mentally and physically. with that said if donald trump doesn't apologize or find a better way to clarify this would you still be willing to support donald trump or a candidate like him? >> well i think those are two different questions. on the one hand it was funny to listen to what robert said. if donald trump does all those things and we're talking about positively -- a positivelyl apologies, then i think we need to go to the clintons. we should probably start there. >> can't you just stand up and acknowledge that what donald trump said was wrong, it was indecent, it was i ammmoral and it really says something about the republican party. this will not get donald trump out of the race. he attacked john kerry who has won three purple hearts. >> i don't want to turn this into one of those back and
8:09 am
forths. let me keep it to this steve, because i want to talk about the issue at hand and i don't want to go down a laundry list for someone who has ever run for office, including mitt romney. with that john mccain came out and commented on donald trump as well as other candidates here. does this qualify donald trump in your eyes as a leading voice in the conservative party if he does not better clarify what he has said as an insult to those who were captured? >> i don't think there is any question -- you have to look at his record in context. he's give an lot ofn a lot of money, given for veteran causes. i disdain john mccain, disdain john mccain, and i found those comments to be way over the top, way overboard and way out of bounds. i think that and i'm no fan of the kefshconservative john mccain. the entire movement is going to
8:10 am
try to oust john mccain in that senate primary next year. i agree the comments were way over the top, i just get tired of the false equivalencies from the other side of the aisle. you mentioned several instances where previous republicans had their services questioned democrats as well. to listen to robert saying trump is a racist when he's given all this money to the clinton foundation, the clintons have gone to his weddings. mitt romney doesn't give a rip about what donald trump said about veterans mitt romney is just ticked off that trump has taken the air out of the sails of his boys, there's a lot of in sincerity going on here. >> it's a test to whether they're prepared to stand up for our veterans stand up to decent divisive language and the question is unless he does so he'll never be competitive. >> i want to stop the conversation there, but obviously there is so much ahead
8:11 am
and we'll certainly have you both on to continue it. it doesn't appear donald trump will be going anywhere. i want to take you back to the breaking news from the new cuba embassy in washington where just minutes ago a protester drenched in what appeared to be fake blood was arrested. joining me live now, nbc's luke russert who is at the cuban embassy in washington. luke, what's the very latest on what's played out there? >> reporter: well, tamron has one could expect this is quite a jubilant atmosphere because so many people wanted to see this so long amongst americans, but there was also i would say, a smaller group that are opposed to this and still very much opposed to the castro regime. that protester was, in fact one of those anti-castro protesters and from what i saw, he went in front of one of the gates of the embassy where there were a lot of people and to some degree i would say made a run at the door or tried to move forward and then drenched himself in fake blood. and that fake blood obviously
8:12 am
got the attention of d.c. police who were here maintaining security. they brought the gentleman down to the ground quite quickly. it was somewhat of a gruesome scene because there was a moment where we thought perhaps it was real blood but it quickly became someone making a political statement. that's what's going on outside the embassy right now. you have a lot of people saying, this is a great day, but we need to rescind the trade embargo. that's the next step in formalizing the relationship between the united states and cuba. you have others saying this is a very bad day. this is a day where a dictator is celebrating and it should not be a joyous occasion. all that being said at 10:16 a.m., a historic moment the cuban flag raised here on 16th street in washington d.c. for the first time in 54 years. a lot of this is being broadcast out in the street with dignitaries there. he's meeting with john kerry as well. in a fascinating moment tamron
8:13 am
the national anthem actually blasted out on the speakers here from the cuban embassy. the national anthem of the united states something that is quite a rarity. so a historic day here in washington, d.c. the human flag is out for the first time in 54 years. assume this will be the first, if not more historic moments. >> luke russert live for us. let me bring in gabe gutierrez who is in havana. gabe obviously a very different scene behind me from what we saw in washington d.c. but nonetheless the impact of what's being played out felt there. >> reporter: that's right, tamron, much more of a response here in havana than what we saw in washington. however, people did see the ceremony live on cuban tv. the story was in the state-run cuban newspaper, albeit on page 4, but there seems to be a great optimism here from many of the
8:14 am
folks we have spoken with. some of them are viewing this with guided skepticism. this was the interest section in cuba, it was for several decades, but as you mentioned, this historic day that once again is the u.s. embassy in havana for the first time in 54 years. significantly, however, we are not seeing the u.s. flag being flown here. it won't be until secretary of state john kerry visits havana next month. there seems to be a great sense of optimism here about what will come in the future. we've seen many tourists here perhaps expecting some kind of ceremony outside the embassy, taking pictures and we've talked to a few people outside the embassy who are applying for visas as they do every day, but this time they expect this new relationship or at least thawing relations between the u.s. and cuba might lead to greater economic prosperity. others, though aren't so sure and they view this with guarded
8:15 am
skepticism. tamron, back to you. >> thank you very much. now to developing news about the gunman who killed five people at a military facility in tennessee. law enforcement is now telling nbc news new reports about the attack. at the reserve center he refers to himself as quote, quite the fire fight. processing evidence is taking some time because of the magnitude of gunfire. meanwhile, family of the shooter, mohammad youssuf abdulazeez, is revealing more information about the days leading up to the attack. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest for us from chattanooga. >> reporter: there is still no official moefsh fortive for the shooting. a law enforcement official tells nbc news that it appears the terrorist was not relate to do any terrorist group at this point. the family says he had been battling depression, was thinking about suicide, had been taking other drugs and was on a downward spiral 24 hours before the shooting. >> reporter: he's the face

behind the bloodshed, mohammad youssuf abdulazeez, who opened gunfire on two military facilities battling depression since he was a child. he also battled alcohol and drug abuse. he received a dui this year which his loved ones believe were at the heart of his attack. over the weekend, a fifth service member, randall smith, lost his life. his mother came here for one last goodbye. >> oh my gosh! >> i'm so sorry. >> he died doing what he loved. he would have it no other way. >> reporter: the families of the four marines also killed are grieving with a city that has no answers. before he unloaded round after round, a senior law enforcement official tells nbc news mohammad youssuf abdulazeez spent time at a gun range and sent a text to a

times" releasing the full deposition from his 2005 lawsuit in which he admits to obtaining drugs to give to women who he wanted to have sex with. cosby was questioned over a four-day period by an attorney representing a woman who claims she was drugged and molested by him. while describing their encounter, cosby defends himself by suggesting he is a good reader of non-verbal signals given by women saying quote, she does not say to me don't ever do that again. she doesn't walk out with an attitude of a huff. because i think that i'm a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things. the document also shed more light on his previously disclosed admission about the qaaludes which he described as quote, the same as a person would say, have a drink. we should note cosby has denied the sexual assault allegations against him and he has never been charged. joining me now is one of the women who accused bill cosby of sexually assaulting her, barbara

barber barber. thank you for joining us. you said he brainwashed you into viewing him as a father figure and assaulted you multiple times. when you hear the words in this deposition, including where mr. cosby described himself in the article basically or presented himself as an uncavalier playboy who sometimes used a combination of fame and parent concern and powerful sedatives as a way of pursuing women and seeing it not as a serious allegation. what's your reaction? >> my reaction is we're looking at classic nar sicissism. this man has a decades-long
8:24 am
reputation for dieabolically seeking his prey. to say that is preposterous. we're not talking about two consensual adults who are flirting with one another and moving on from there. we are talking about a man who under oath agreed that yes, he obtained drugs in order to incapacitate them to have sex with them. that is called rape, and once you do that to a man or a woman or boy or girl that person then loses their ability to make decisions because they're passed out. >> when bill cosby in the deposition said offering qaaludes was the equivalent of asking a person at that time would you like a drink or have a drink with me what's your reaction to that? and did that happen to you? >> i never asked for drugs or sex from that man.
8:25 am
there were times that i had a glass of wine and before i was finished with it i was out. and so he clearly drugged me. he never asked me would i like a drug or a qaalude, so it was done to me without my knowledge. and i don't know what he's referring to. that sounds really ridiculous. >> you, at the time i understand you wanted to be deposed for this particular lawsuit but you were unable to because the situation was settled. but in the deposition the attorney representing this young woman who worked at temple university as a basketball manager, the attorney said to bill cosby, i think you're making light of a very serious situation, to which mr. cosby replied, that may very well be. over the years, as we mentioned, bill cosby denied all these allegations here according to the deposition. this conversation is one that he did not take very seriously.
8:26 am
knowing bill cosby for all the many years you have what do you believe right now as he's thinking about all of this? is his world crumbling down? >> yes, i think that one little statement does point to the fact that maybe he was feeling a little bit of pressure but, you know, again, sociopathic thinkers become very skilled at fooling and bamboozling everyone around them, especially when they feel they're under pressure, and in this case under oath, they're still going to try and just weasel through it and distract people and divert attention, and he did not clearly ever believe -- maybe he does now -- that he felt impenetrable. he had enablers and circles of people around him.
