goes. he's got the media attention. he knows how to get it. nobody else can match what trump is doing right now. and if this is a game nobody plays it better than trump so far. although trump wasn't playing games this weekend. he really cut to the chase and got himself in a snit. the donald ignited a media fire storm with these comments about john mccain. >> i supported him for president. i raised a million dollars for him. that's a lot of money. i supported him. he lost. he let us down. but he lost. f so i never liked him is svp as much of after that. >> he's a war hero. >> he's not a war hero. he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people who were captured. i hate to tell you. he's a war hero because he was captured. okay? and i believe -- perhaps he's a war hero. >> trump attempted to clarify a short time later. >> look, someone is a prisoner

i consider them a war hero other than bergdahl. he was a prisoner. i don't consider him a war hero. but if someone is a prisoner i would consider that person a war hero. but we have a lot of war heros that weren't prisoners also and we should give them credit too. >> he wrote today the media is distorting his words. earlier today mccain spoke about trump's comments. >> does donald trump owe you an apology? >> no i don't think so. but i think he mayo an apology to the families of those who have sacrificed in conflict and those who have undergone the prison experience. >> now not to defend trump here but let's not fwhoergtorget who started all of this back and forth between senator mccain and donald trump. trump goes to arizona, gets a

stop. louisiana governor jindal tweeted after trump spends six years in a pow camp he can weigh in on mccain's service. and the rnc released a statement that said there is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably. hold it right there. is serving in the united states senate something honorable? i remember the republican party just ripping apart our current president accusing him of not being american accusing him of being "other," accusing him of being born somewhere other than the united states and paling around with terrorists. but i didn't see any statement from the republican party back then. but they really have learned their lesson now, haven't they. republicans have quickly and

collectively condemned trump's comments on mccain, meanwhile republicans as a whole, well they weren't so quick to condemn these remarks from trump. >> when mexico sends its people they are not sending their best. they are not sending you. they are not sending you. they are sending people that have lots of problems. and they are bringing those problems with us. they are bringing drugs. they are bringing crime. they are rapists and some i assume, are good people. >> some republicans did call out trump for those comments but the collective outrage we have to admit was missing. the criticism of trump on these racially charged remarks is nowhere near what we're seeing compared to his comments on john mccain. is it possible that donald trump could save the republican party from themselves? that he actually is what they are? and somebody is now saying it out there.

or -- the other paul. they can't get in double fission. what is -- figures. why is donald trump polling so well if he's so bad? >> well good evening. i think one of the reasons he's polling sow so well is i think a lot of people are tired of the stereotypical washington politician where they say what they think people want to hear and trump whether you like him or not there is a certain level of the authenticity to him. i think he's a carnival barker. i think he has no place of being on the stage and i think his candidacy is a joke. but i think it does send a shot across the bow also to senator clinton and sanders that people are looking for authenticity and they are looking at the people in washington saying you folks just don't get it.

fade now. >> in modern day politics i guess it is not about the record. it is about the money and the media moxey. but michael eric dyson is this the republican party that we're finally getting to know out in public. this is who they really are and why trump is polling so well? what do you think? >> maybe so. at least it is the part most vocal. as with any group of people those to the extreme are often the most amplified and they have been out there. donald trump is channelling the id of this collective anxiety and this collective sense of disease that so many republicans filled in the face of difference. you pointed it out earlier about president obama being subject to calls and claims of his otherness. not only senator mccain whose honorable service has been beneen submerged now by donald trump.

but donald trump is willing to say anything and as a result his intemperance is accommodated and people feel that somehow they must allow him to speak. as if being rich and quite successful in his business gives him the right to say the kind of things he does. the question is are they going to continue to reflect what the viewpoints of most republicans as he leads the field? or will the kind of common sense, if you will, pack within that group of people take over and donald trump will be reigned in. >> can we give trump some credit that this billionaire is not so disconnected from the american people? this is a guy who has experienced a lot in life and he knows how to relate. he knows where people are. brad woodhouse, i don't think you can get enough of this can you? you really want him to win this

winds. mud slides and flooded roadways and motorists were left stranded. also in california, a wild fire has been raging in san bern bernardino county. earlier today al roker explained the increase in california's severe weather. >> we've had this impact from el nino already. this is remnants of delores and all of that moisture streamed up into southern california and the southwest causing big problems. the problem here is water temperatures. the sea surface temperatures. 3-6 degrees above normal and they are only getting warmer. this is favorable for tropical development. >> and for more conversation on this, let me bring in paul douglas, senior meteorologist at aris weather in minneapolis. great to have you with us. what is going on in southern

california? one extreme to the next. >> well some of the moisture from the flooding over the weekend was the result as al pointed out as ex hurricane delores. some of the moisture streaming up into the southwest and spiking normal monsoonal thunderstorms, which do tend to develop this type of year. you have a localized monoseensoon effect in the southwest. we may be cruising though towards a super el nino as big ore bigger than what was experienced in '97 and '98. i'm seeing numbers that are staggering. they call it ace, accumulated cyclone energy. and it is 22 times greater than it should be this time of year in the central pacific. the pacific has become a playground for cyclones. a record number of hurricanes and typhoons. the typhoons draw their energy from warm ocean water. but in turn they tend to relax the trade winds, which causes

even warmer water to build to the surface, which amplifies el nino. we could be looking at two, three, three and a half degrees warmer than average. and that could mean a very significant shift in the pattern for california. every el nino is different, but right now some of the smart money is on significant rains and a potential break in the drought within about three to six months. >> how rare is that? 22 times greater. have we seen that maybe in the last -- or since records have been being kept? what about that? >> i've snooempb numbernever seen a number that high. the accumulated cyclone energy again, a measure of how much energy is not only in the atmosphere but the oceans. and something is happening in the pacific. and i keep telling people, it is very simplistic to look out the window at the thermometer and on a cold day or a day where it's

snowing to dismiss climate change. it's harder to keep a global perspective. it is harder digging into the data and science. conspiracy theories have always been easier. sort after mental shortcut to actually doing the work looking at the science. but it doesn't matter which side of the aisle that you are on. thermometers ocean buoys are neither republican or democrat. the dat is the data. the science is the science. and the 97% of all that extra warming from greenhouse gases has been going into the oceans. and people think out of sight out of mind. well some of that warmth is now coming back to the surface and spawning these record typhoons especially in the western pacific. but also hurricanes in the eastern pacific. and that may in turn amplify the el nino, which may have a silver lining -- helping to ease the drought in california this winter.

went on all five sunday talk shows to defend the agreement. >> we have a plan to deal with push back with respect to military interdiction stopping the flow of weapon dealing with counter terrorism dealing with the special forces training and capacity for some other countries. so there will be plenty of pushback. but the simple reality is if you are going to push back against iran it is better to push back against one without a nuclear weapon. >> the 15 member group also authorized members to begin lifting sanctions on iran. president obama says congress should consider the strong international support when debating the merits of the agreement. >> there is broad international consensus around this issue. not just among the international community but also among experts in nuclear proliferation. and my working assumption is

that congress will pay attention to that broad base consensus. >> lawmakers have 60 days to review the deal. today was the first official day in that 60 day count. many republicans are strongly against it. just a short time ago republican presidential hopeful lindsay graham mccain and former senator leader held a cam pain to lunch their no nukes for iran tour. >> i would say there is a better than 50% chance we can reject the deal with the understanding that the next president will have power to negotiate a better deal. because congressional sanctions still being in place matters. >> joined by steve clemens. good to have you with us tonight. >> good to be who you. >> your reaction to the u.n. security council endorsement with the backdrop of the republicans saying it is a bad

deal. >> the world sees this as an inflection point and barack obama in addition to other world leaders has shown we can still do things in the world and not everything is a failure from the start. and you have basically successfully applied crippling sanctions to iran. in have gotten iran to move. and the republicans have to decide whether or not they are going to ice tlat united statessolate the united states in this effort and commit the united states to something that might look like more of a military track or not. and to see, you know, what barack obama has done and what this u.n. vote did is essentially give the republicans an opportunity to stand up and to demonstrate they are more about politics and they are about the substance and core of vital national interest of the united states. >> so are we in for a big political fight now this tour has started by these two

senators and former senator lieberman. and kerry, of course secretary of state doing the media blitz to gather support. this is what we're in for in the next 60 days? >> we probably are. but i don't see anything wrong with graham mccain and lieberman raising fundamental questions about the agreement. that is what the congress is there. that can create a responsible discussion. unfortunately senator corker whose is chairman of the foreign relations committee has demonstrated how to do that more than lindsey graham. and lindsey graham is by far better than most other republican candidates running right now who probably haven't read the agreement, don't know what it stands for and came out against it before it had even been done. so we have different gradations of opposition. but i think corker is setting the right mold. it is find to be skeptical. we were skeptical of soviet arms control negotiations.

it is fine to be skeptical of iran arms negotiations and nuclear weapons negotiations but they need to come in and look at the content and substance and put on the table what they would do different and look at what a 15-0 vote in the united nations is about. >> always great to have you with us. >> you bet. >> still to come the net roots--.

feeling attached to the issue. demonstrators didn't spare bernie sanders from the same confrontation. >> black lives of course matter. and i spent 50 years fighting for civil rights and dignity. but if you don't want me to be here, that east okay. >> bernie standers still hasn't found footing with african american voters. he led sit-ins in the 1960s civil rights movement. and responded on inequality. sanders hosted a phoenix rally that night that drew the largest crowd yet for this come pain season. but analysts wonder if he can maintain momentum without appeal from key liberals.

dr. siesdyson, you first. does bernie sanders have a problem with black voters? black voters have a problem with bernie sanders? or is it just an issue of not knowing who the candidate is? >> well he certainly has a problem with black voters. if he exhibits the kind of tone deaf approach that he did at the net roots conference. the reality is that of course he wants to ride upon his rigorous commitment to civil rights of a period of 50 years. there is no question about that. and his days when he was out front. but there is a janet jackson team what have you done for me lately here? and he's got to sew he understands black lives matter. there are structural inequalities and blind spots in the american conscience and at least in the optic nerve of american race that says black people's lives don't add up the same way white folks's lives do. >> is the black community

listening to bernie sanders? and i think that is a fair question. because when all of the turmoil was unfolding in ferguson sanders was given numerous interviewing saying the issue is a jobs program. and we've got to focus on the jobs for the country. >> i'm not saying he doesn't have any good ideas. first with white progressives, sub subsuming the issue of race under class has been a faux pas. when class inequality is erased that would suggest that there is no persistent racial animus. but that is not the case. even people upwardly mobile who share space with other white folk kwhor doing well face barriers to them. that is why you have a glass ceiling or ceilings imposed upon black managers. that is number one. but number two. you can't just talk about whether you have done for black people.

you have to talk about how you are struggling with the specific forms of racial brutality and police brutality. and i think bernie sanders actually has said some great things but at the moment you are being challenged you can't be defensive defensive. you have to build wrij bridges and talk about how there are still inequalities that exist that have to be addressed. >> did hillary clinton make the right move by skipping the conference? >> i think she did. because these are not her people. and if what happened there is any indication, thank goodness for her she skipped it because all three of the candidates martin o'malley bernie sanders and hillary clinton do not have a good answer for the black lives matter campaign. and o'malley and clinton both said black lives matter white lives matter, all lives matter. we already know white lives matter. we place more value on white lives and it's imempirically proven time and time again. so it is a huge stumbling block

for the candidates and i would agree that you can't simply reduce systemic racism to an economic problem as bernie sanders has done. so far we have not heard something interest from these candidates. >> when you say these aren't her people? i think these people are going to be supporting hillary. and they were disappointed that she wasn't there. of the. >> well i think -- >> go ahead. >> i would say if bernie sanders wasn't liberal enough for them. hillary clinton certainly wasn't and i'm certain there were a smattering of clinton supporters. but she has higher support than sanders. he is around 5%. and that does have a lot to do with his limited appeal. and his response here was indicative of that. >> i don't think he's been really introduced to the black community. it is going to take time but that is just my perspective. i mean progressives erupted on twitter with the #bernie's so black. so why do some voters believe

walker's handling of the question about homosexuality being a choice. the group posted on its website, of course it isn't a choice. if it was, scott walker would be able to tell us when he chose to be straight. i'm joined tonight by wisconsin congressman mark pokan. your reaction to scott walker's handling of these questions about homosexuality and whether it's a choice or whether you're born gay. i mean it's almost ignore rant bordering on insulting as i see it. your thoughts? >> it's pretty basic stuff. clearly, he's either in extreme pandering mode or unfortunate ignorance mode. neither is especially electable in a november election. so i think, you know he's trying to appeal to every

extreme person he can in iowa to win that primary. if he doesn't win iowa he's toast and going to do whatever it takes to try to get elected. so this is just another one of those situations where again, he knows better but will do whatever it takes to become president. >> well, what about him as a candidate? does this prove that maybe he's not very well thought out, that he may be a good precenter but policy-wise he really doesn't know? >> you know over and over he's had these foot in mouth problems, you know he said that the single greatest active foreign policy by regan was firing air traffic controllers and he stood up to 100,000 union protesters. he was asked about evolution and said i'll punt on that one. that's your inside voice, not outside voice. this is a guy that really did all right here in wisconsin. he had a recall that made him stronger because fundamentally people in wisconsin didn't think that was nice and we're fund

mentally nice people in the upper midwest, but when it comes to this sort of either pandering or ignorance coming out of the walker campaign, he's not showing that he's a very electable candidate. >> well, earlyier today governor walker signed a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. is the timing of this just a political play to win favor from the conservative base? do you make of it? >> you know i think every decision he makes when he has juice in the morning, he tells people it's florida juice because he needs florida votes. if he has eggs, he's trying to see if he'll offend anyone. he wants to be president so desperately, he'll say and do anything to get elected but people will figure that out and i think ultimately, that will be his demise. >> 70% of his commercials were actually running against the

recall convincing the people of wisconsin that the recall should not have taken place, that they hired him to do a job, he should have the full four years to finish the job and tom barrett, of course was out gunned financially some 10-1 and most of the money came from out of state. i mean, do you think that's a story that needs to get on the national level to put walker in some perspective? >> absolutely. in fact, on election day, 70% of the people said they didn't like that you have a recall and yet, i think president obama on the exit polls was up seven points for people who just voted to keep scott walker. clearly, it wasn't about idology but people in the upper midwest thought we have a normal election process to get rid of a governor and that the recall wasn't nice and that fundamentally didn't connect with the public and they spend millions and millions of dollars telling the public it wasn't nice to recall someone and that was effective. people look at scott walker on

paper. he looks like a good candidate but those of us who have been with him a decade or two can tell you more. >> good to have you on thanks so much. that's the "ed show".
