tv   Hardball With Chris Matthews  MSNBC  July 20, 2015 11:00pm-12:01am PDT

11:00 pm
can nothing stop him, not even this? let's play "hardball." good evening i'm chris matthews in washington. let's get this straight, there are no heroes in arlington cemetery because they didn't dodge the bullet. there are no heroes in p.o.w. camps because winners like donald trump don't get captured and the bombers that got shot down aren't heroes because they shouldn't have gotten shot down in the first place. refusing to accept release until it was honorable. is this what trump meant to say or should he have meant
11:01 pm
something else or does he think it was some vietnam three star with tv, air conditioning and outdoor pool and more than descent room service? is something i'm proud to show you. here is john mccain himself talking about the time he spent as a prisoner of war when he joined me on "hardball" the college tour. >> the real privilege of my life was not that dark moment but to have the opportunity and privilege of serving in the company of heroes, the reason why i made it is because of the encouragement, help, love and compassion of the men i was imprisoned with. >> kathleen parker is a prize columnist and you reed is national correspondent up, there she is up in new york with msnbc. mr. trump lapped the field for the nomination in a new today abc news poll released late
11:02 pm
today trump has surged into the lead in this contest with 24%, nearly twice as much as the nearest rival and jeb bush is further down. the biggest lead of any candidate in the polling and here is the rub, the poll was taken before trump's comments on sad about mccain and they note his support fell sharply on the one night when voters were surveyed after his remarks. howard, what do you make of that? has he crested because of this comment about mccain not really being a war hero? >> if he has, it's not just because of the substance of his remarks about mccain. i was with mccain the year after that interview -- >> that -- >> i was with john mccain and watched him go into the room, the cell and anyone that seen that would never make the comment donald trump made. it's the notion that he somehow is a little unhinged.
11:03 pm
until now it's been he's crazy like a fox saying all kinds of provocative things, getting support of people alienated from the political system and worried about immigration, people taking him seriously in that regard. this thing makes you wonder if he's not a little unhinged. >> yeah. >> and that, if he is cresting, that will be the reason not necessarily the substance of his remarks and naturally john mccain took the high road, never claimed he was a hero. >> following up with that a bit, if he is unhinged, should he be president? >> well, that's the obvious question. the wall street journal editorial page joined with us at the "huffington post" in saying he should not be taken seriously. you have them agreeing on something, you got a story. >> i hear the old phase, kathleen, about if you leave a a monkey at a typewriter long enough, he'll type merry christmas. i think he was on to something here.
11:04 pm
he doesn't realize being less smart than he seems. getting the working close guy. >> i don't think it's going to hurt him. i really don't. >> how is attacking a guy -- >> look, it's reprehensible what he said and offensive to anyone and everyone that had part in the militariry, anyone that joins the military is a hero -- >> he'll get you for that word. >> the media says i'm reprehensible. >> oh, well, that was as nice as i could put it. listen, rush limbaugh is already on this. >> we get to the that quote. >> okay, i'm sorry, i'm jumping ahead saying look, they are always trying to get us, those establishment people and he brags about the time he made fun of michael j. fox and remarks the that were so offensive, basic recalling her a name. >> what did he say about michael j. fox?
11:05 pm
>> he said he was exaggerating parkinsons similar tons and rush limbaugh made, pretended he had parkinsons. they thought they got me on that and i'm still going strong. it will be fine. someone like, i guess, hermann cane had to do something to get back in the news, mr. nine nine nine, he said look, it's all this establishment elite none sense. i don't think it will hurt him. >> he said trump was firing up the crazies that drew thousands of trump supporters, in response trump went after mccain's military service this weekend moderated by frank luntz and all hell broke lose. >> let me get to it. >> he's a war hero. >> lest not a war hero. >> he is a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured.
11:06 pm
he's a war hero because he was captured, okay? >> why would you say you like people that don't get captured, it's a simple question. >> i do. why? the people that don't get captured i'm not supposed to like? >> are you suggesting that john mccain did something to lead to his capture? >> of course not, how could you think that? >> that's what you said. >> go back to being -- go back to being -- let me explain something. when john mccain calls 15,000 people that showed up in phoenix, arizona to talk about illegal immigration, he calls them a bunch of crazies, he's doing a great disservice to this country. john mccain picked a fight with me. he said 15,000 people were crazies. >> he's not a war hero, he's a war hero because he was captured, i like people that weren't captured. >> no, then if you go on, matt, see, that's what you don't do, excuse me, excuse me, matt, you're the media and you do the same thing, the next sentence is
11:07 pm
he is a war hero. i said that, but they never want to play it and you don't want to play it. >> let me say for the record, we did run the other part of your comments, mr. trump. we did run the part where you said he is a war hero. please don't say we didn't because we did. >> the fact is we just did, as well. >> at the very end he says well, maybe, i think he maybe is a war hero but i think problem lip he was watching the expressions of people in the audience going oh my gosh, you can't say something like that. >> yeah, let me ask you about this thing. i think it goes out to the people he's been courting accidently or on purpose. working people, very patriotic people whether it's immigration or something else. i think he took a direct shot at them in this regard because they do value the mia, pow. you're younger than me. for 30 or 40 years, there is an anger among working people in the country, guys with motorcycles, whatever, you know, they drove around and talked
11:08 pm
about this over, you go down to vietnam memorial now, mia, pow guys up there obsessed with the fact we left people behind and now he's making fun of the guy that was a pow. i don't get why you go at your own base politically. >> you and i agree on a lot but on this i'm with kathleen. i don't see this is going to her. the same people you talk about, chris, if they are part of the republican party base. >> here is the complete political analysis. i don't think you should make fun of guys the that serve the country and suffered. >> my brother was in the army national guard and grew up on an air force base, it's going to hurt him with people you and me but that's not who the republican base is. not going to hurt him with the republican base. they don't like john mccain.
11:09 pm
they don't like him. they never did. he was pushed on them by the establishment because he is the establishment to a lot of people in the republican base. they never wanted him when he was the nominee. he was pushed on them as was mitt romney by the same people lecturing donald trump. so donald trump i think understands the base of that party better than the wall street journal does and better than john mccain does. so at the moment he's firing up the red hots because they like the way he's talking. this is the same base that laughed, latched at john kerry's vietnam service and laughed at his purple heart and put on purple heart stickers to make fun and belittle him. >> rush limbaugh is out there defending trump. here is what some of what he had to say today on the radio. >> trump can survive the this. trump is surviving this. you know, this is a great, great
11:10 pm
teachable moment here. people make the mistake of assuming one thing and that is this, they make the mistake of assuming that the collective outrage of the washington establishment and the media is reflective of american public opinion. >> who buys that? you know, anyway, i'll stick to my point and i think people respect this country, respect the military, respect the guys enlisted to get killed and unfortunately, they were captured in vietnam and killed in the jungle. >> rush limbaugh's approval doesn't prove that donald trump can get anywhere near the republican nomination. as popular as rush limbaugh is, he's a character in the landscape of the media. you can argue the so-called main stream media is, too, but if you look at the polls, donald trump has been polling a lot of support from people that call themselves moderate republicans, moderate republicans and so, you
11:11 pm
know, if he looks unhinged and that's what i think this remark does, that's going to give some pause to whatever growth he was going to have from here on in. >> do you think it's a howard biel thing going on, joy? is this howard biel? >> i think people, absolutely. part of the republican base that feels that they have been pushed around including by the own parties, mitch mcconnells and those who say they aren't good enough and they don't want to be nicer to and they like the feeling of having donald trump give the business and is rush limbaugh a character to the iowa republican caucus going? the hard-core base, the that part of the party is the part that votes in primaries. they like what trump is saying. >> joy, i'm not convinced those are all of who trump's supporters are right now. i don't think it's the hard core tea party necessarily.
11:12 pm
if you look at the polling, that's not necessarily the case. it's not that trump is so id logical, he's a name caller in all directions. that appeals to people less political, not the hard core id logs and that's my question. they look at the character of somebody. his character is interesting and exciting but does he go over the line with something like this? >> trump isn't even a republican. i don't think for one minute he'll get the nomination. we have to understand the entertainment value. people are enjoying it. let's see what he says next. >> along with it is memory. they get a piece of paper and list the strong statements made by other candidates for the last six months into iowa. they couldn't. they can tell you two things candidates have said, two things trump said. he doesn't like hispanic immigrants and thinks john mccain is not a hero. that's all they know. >> scott walker busted through the trump machine considering bombing iran on day one.
11:13 pm
>> here is how mccain responded to trump's comments earlier today. >> does donald trump owe you an apology? >> no, but maybe to the families of those who have sacrifice in conflict and those who have undergone the experience. those that inspired us to do things that we otherwise wouldn't have been capable of doing and those are the people that i think he owes an apology to. >> first thing we'll do is show you john mccain, the full statement in 1999. a spectacular statement about
11:14 pm
what went on in those years he spent as a prisoner of the north vietnamese being tortured. we'll come back to watch and and thank you howard, kathleen parker, and joy reid my friend in new york. veterans react and mccain says trump, as you just heard, doesn't owe him an apology but should apologize to those who were held prisoner while serving their country and what life would be like if trump were actually president. how would the bluster fly? that's a "saturday night live"right there. and a nuclear deal with democrats to get behind the bargaining with teheran. donald trump and the people he wants to vote for him. and i know who they are. this is "hardball" the place for politics. why are you deleting these photos? because my teeth are yellow. why don't you use a whitening toothpaste? i'm afraid it's bad for my teeth. try crest 3d white. crest 3d white diamond strong
11:15 pm
toothpaste and rinse... ...gently whiten... ...and fortify weak spots. use together for 2 times stronger enamel. crest 3d white. flo: hey, big guy. i heard you lost a close one today. look, jamie, maybe we weren't the lowest rate this time. but when you show people their progressive direct rate and our competitors' rates you can't win them all. the important part is, you helped them save. thanks, flo. okay, let's go get you an ice cream cone, champ. with sprinkles? sprinkles are for winners. i understand.
11:16 pm
after more than five decades, the united states and cuba restored relations. the flag was raised. in havana, the u.s. flag will be raised when john kerry travels to the country on august 14th. so far the president has not yet nominated anyone to be the american ambassador to cuba. we'll be right back.
11:17 pm
11:18 pm
welcome back to "hardball." i asked senator mccain about his service and began by playing him an excerpt from his book where he talks about some of his darkest moments. >> with my right leg nearly useless, i found it almost impossible to stand. on the third night, i lay in my own blood and waste so tired and hurt that i could not move. despairing a mini relief from pain and further torture and fearing the close approach of my moment of dishonor, i tried to
11:19 pm
take my life. i doubt i intended to kill myself but i couldn't fight anymore and i remember deciding the last thing i could do to make them believe i was still resisting and wouldn't break was to attempt suicide. >> we're back with senator john mccain. what does that tell you about this campaign and your country and -- >> well, you know, i hadn't listened to that in a long time. it always puts things in prospective but it's important to point out because a lot of people have not read that book that the real privilege of my life was not that dark moment, the real privilege of my life was to have the opportunity and the privilege of serving in the company of heroes. the reason why i made it was because of the encouragement, the help, the love and compassion of the men that i was in prison with. >> joined by my guests, david cornwash, thank you for coming
11:20 pm
here with a different perspective. >> listening to trump's comments, just being outrageous, meanwhile, he was nursing a bone spur in his heel staying out of vietnam, mccain was flying off a navy carrier into the most heavily defended target on the face of the earth and enduring five years of mystery. mccain is a hero to those of us in uniform. >> the thing i think most people like to point out who know what they are talking about unlike trump is he could have gotten out earlier. >> oh, yeah, simply one of the most incredible iconic acts of courage i personally know of to decline the opportunity to get out of vietnam -- >> because his father was head of the hole. >> first in, first out and
11:21 pm
refused to go and endured more years of mystery. mccain, again, to those of us in uniform is an absolute hero and i might add life of public service is also an example of an honorable way to serve the country. >> we'll be back to you. david, i mean, you and i didn't serve in the military and my belief is that the way that morally people like me have to live is to pay great reverence to those in the fighting, not just in uniform but to the fighting. the only way to live with yourself is to throw total respect. can't understand why a human being that different serve of military age and different serve for whatever reason, bone spur or whatever would question the heroism of those who did. >> when he gets ahead of steam he keeps on going and ticked off at john mccain for referring to followers of people at the rallies as crazies.
11:22 pm
the rules of engagement, political discourse don't seem to apply to him and i don't, i fear that it's not going to have much of an impact. i agree with joy reed, the people he is speaking to, you know, are going to say go on, get attacked by the media, you go up against john mccain who they don't like because of politics, not because of the war record. that's fine. this party, the republican party is used to what we, you and i have called chicken hawks, nominating people or giving people high position and who did not serve in the military when they had a chance whether dick cheney or george bush and getting out early, that whole story but who are very hawkish about sending other people to war. the fact that donald trump didn't go to war, didn't have a bone spur but now is talking tough about the rest of the world, let alone about john
11:23 pm
mccain, i don't think that troubles a lot of republican voters sadly. >> i'd offer it's going to do damage. one of the last slides i use on every lecture shows a degree of trust the country has for various institutions of the government, the most trusted institution is the armed forces for good reason. their sons and daughters write home and say the sergeant and petty officers are people of honor and courage and integrity. that kind of comment is not just outrageous but also politically lethal to them. it should be. >> just to point -- a point of history about pows and the vietnam war. most of the men, they were men who were captured were flyers, bombing missions that got shot down as you pointed out one of the most heavily guarded targets in the world ever. the guys were fighting in the jungle. they were killed, right? >> we had some prisoned in the south. >> did they take prisoners?
11:24 pm
>> we had marines. >> did they get out? >> most of them died actually in the south. they were tortured to death and tied of malnutrition or mystery. back to the notion that the people flying against those targets up north, air force navy marines were the elite people in our armed forces. just a qualifies the navy carrier pilots. so mccain was a volunteer, 23 combat missions, his performance under stress and hilton was remarkable. i think trump made a huge slanderous comment that affects a lot of people. >> i didn't like his religious comments, either. i'm catholic as everybody knows and i don't like, i don't understand people that talk about religion. it was terrible. >> he's going to keep popping off. >> mr. trump explained his own circumstances that kept him out of the war. let's watch him. >> i had student deferments like
11:25 pm
many people had during the war or around the time of the war. i had a minor medical deferment for feet, for a bone spur of the foot, which was minor. i was then entered into the draft because if i would have got an different number i could have been drafted. i was fortunate in a sense because i was not a believer in the vietnam war. that was another war that was a disaster for this country. >> well, today senator mccain asked if trump's lack of service made his comments worse? >> what about donald trump? are you not resentful that a guy that didn't serve in vietnam is criticizing someone like yourself who still is paying the price day in and day out for what you did and what you endured while in prison camp? >> i put all that behind me. for me to look back in anger at anyone is non-productive. >> well, let's go through this
11:26 pm
because politically and that's what we cover is politics. i can the kind of people, the regular people that trump was appealing to, they weren't all red hot crazy tea party people, people that loved the country and think it's been betrayed by the elite in this country, hasn't looked out for the boarder and so tired of the elite not looking out for the country. a lot of the guys will look at this and say why is he making fun of one of us? >> absolutely. there is 2.5 million people in the department of defense who got families and there is probably some better part of 16 million veterans that got families. i think that kind of outrageous comment about a navy attack carrier pilot is going to do him harm. i hope it does. >> we're flying combat missions now over isis and i talked to a pilot this weekend. they want to know we're behind them 100%. you're not really here if you get shot. it's going to happen. we're going to lose guys. >> my fear is in the next day or two or week, donald trump will
11:27 pm
get out there and say i'm the only guy that wants to build a wall. i'll invade mexico and take on china and that will get to 20% of the base and -- >> you know what walls lead to? >> what? >> you know what walls lead to? >> tunnels. >> and ladders. >> thank you. up next, car service uber, their challenge to new york city mayor only to get turned down to the fast growing startup leverage is huge popularity among millennials against big city politicians. that debate is coming up in a minute. this is "hardball" place for politics. when a moment spontaneously turns romantic why pause to take a pill? and why stop what you're doing to find a bathroom? with cialis for daily use, you don't have to plan around either. it's the only daily tablet approved to treat erectile dysfunction so you can be ready anytime the moment is right.

11:29 pm
11:30 pm
>> welcome back to "hardball." there is a new public policy debate over uber, the ultra popular ride sharing service. republican candidates love government free business approach.
11:31 pm
democratic candidates praise the invasion but are concerned about a lack of worker and consumer protection like with the trade bill. meanwhile in new york city, mayor bill de blasio is going to war with uber pushing regulations to cap the rising number of drivers in the city. anyway, buzz field's ben smith writes he's walking interest a political buzz saw. uber has endless cash and panic about getting capped in the market and every incentive. the campaign is being run by david plouffe. well last week, uber mocked the mayor with a feature on the app which warns customers of a 25-minute wait time in an effort to rally users against city hall. now uber launched a multi million add blitz attacking mayor de blasio and extending through august. >> you need to get to the night shift in the south bronx and get
11:32 pm
your baby to the doctor in jamaica queens and while taxis refuse people in minority neighborhoods, uber is there taking people to and from communities. mayor de blasio wants to limit uber cars and drivers and vital service for thousands of new yorkers may vanish. >> don't strand new york, msnbc contributor. i would think the millennials, including my kids love uber. i don't know who would naturally dislike it unless they have an interest or something. is there a philosophical reason or ideal logical reason why someone would oppose this wide open cowboy style business? >> there is two aspects, your kids, millennials and folks from the consumer side, it's invasion
11:33 pm
into the on demand economy, sharing economy that provide as service that's easily accessible, especially for the ma generation. democratic politicians, what are the nature of the employment protections for those that are classified as independent contractors and not employees. in a sense, we have 20th century set up laws and labor regulations that are mismatched to the a 21st century economy. that's the big challenge that uber and many other companies, not just uber are facing right now. >> it seems if de blasio who is popular can shut down uber in new york, he will not be as popular afterwards. >> yeah, it's a tough thing. there isn't a big consit web see. uber going straight for the jugular, trying to make it about
11:34 pm
race. skip the steps on the way to that. >> how is it about -- i don't think i'll let you get past that. how is it about race? >> you look at the uber ad and one of the historic knocks on yellow cab is they won't pick up black people and won't go -- >> okay, look, i've had an african american fellow my age stand in front of me at a cab line and asked if i would stand in front to get the cab. i stood there as a show and he could grab the cab because they weren't stopping for him. he's a well-dressed guy. they must have been afraid he was going to a neighborhood you get a ride back from, fair from or a dangerous neighborhood or i don't think you're in this case the guy will split. i mean, how does uber not avoid -- is uber a good place to get a ride if you're a minority? >> i don't think --
11:35 pm
>> you just brought it up. >> i was referring to the ad you played. this is uber's talking point. it's definitely an absolutely real thing for them and advantage but also a sign of how kind of how intense this political fight is about the to get. >> okay. let me get back to dorian. will there be a city ordinance that says you have to have a medallion? they are like $800,000. >> they are proposing a study to make recommendations. there are thousands of uber drivers on the streets now. it's not as if they are going away. it's limiting the number of new uber drivers, not just uber but the ride sharing services like lift that can come on the streets of new york city but this is the issue, right? it's slowing the growth of uber and lift and these companies which they are upset about from a business perspective.
11:36 pm
there are legitimate, by the way, de blasio can be right and wrong at the same time there are legitimate and environmental concerns, congestion concerns and to go back to ben's point, i would imagine most working class, working families, folks of color probably use public transportation because uber and taxis together are probably outside of the price range of many working class families of color in this city. >> what will survive longer, the horses in central park or uber? >> uber. >> ben -- >> my money is on uber. >> thank you so much. i think they are both going to survive. up next, selling the deal, president obama rallies key democrats to support the nuclear deal with iran. can he muster a minority? all he needs is 34 senators. you're watching "hardball" the place for politics.
11:37 pm
11:38 pm
11:39 pm
11:40 pm
welcome back to "hardball." president obama faces an uphill battle to get congress to approve the deal with iran pivot to securing the votes for an approval in the senate with key democrats including many
11:41 pm
normally reliable supporters of the presidents and bill nelson down in florida under pressure from israeli supporters to vote against the agreement. you'll see the ads on this network against the agreement. another key senator the president is looking for is chuck schumer who i always watch as a leader where this country is going, the presumed successor as the democratic leader. he says he won't be afraid to vote against the deal. >> i'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about it, learning about it and then i'll just do the right thing and not going to let party or pressure or anything else, what is good for america first and foremost and israel, which i care a lot about. there are times when i've broken with the president before when i really think i have a different point of view and the right thing is not what he's doing. >> that will be another tough fight for president obama. joining me now is the round table, ann guerin, jonathan alan and michelle bernard, columnist
11:42 pm
for the 74 and the president of the bernard senate for women. let me go to you, ann, you covered this stuff. the president to win has to over ride a veto, probably. can he do that? i mean, prevent an over ride? >> looks like he will be able to. >> 34 democrats out of 36. >> as you said in the introduction, this will be an uphill battle. tough for the white house but most of the vote counting that i've seen says yes, he can muster enough democratic support to get it through maybe eke it through but get it through. >> tough fight. >> it is a tough fight. >> apax going to drop a ton of money. a lot of people jewish community and elsewhere are nervous about the threat coming from a bomb in the hands of iran, reasonable thing to worried about, go ahead. >> the deal itself is evidence that apax influences. i can't imagine a president
11:43 pm
having cut this deal four years ago, eight years ago, ten years ago. >> do you think there is a mistake of looking too republican? >> oh, yeah. >> right now i think he's allowed himself to be marginalized with prorepublican behavior. he shouldn't be picking sides in our fights. >> he gave the president an excuse to do what he wants. i talked to -- >> what happens when the opposition leader shows up and opposes the deal? >> exactly. this actually gives netanyahu less leverage than otherwise -- >> but he's opposed to the deal. >> right. who will listen to him? already said his peace and it didn't work. what will he say now? >> i'm sorry, i'm trying to make the point if both sides of the political argue the in israel are opposed, does that croak the deal here? >> not necessarily. i think herzog definitely has some leverage here than might not. >> here is a number that might mean something, by a large
11:44 pm
margin, the majority of the people approve the new clear deal. 56 support it. 56 and 37 is a rare amount of firepower but not among people that care a lot, right? it's generally, very skeptical out there will it work. only 35% of those polled believe the agreement will prevent iran from developing nuclear weapons and 64% are not confident it will be a deterrent. >> what happen as i lot in polls but quite frankly, iran, everyone has a reasonable to be fearful that they are going to be deceptive again even in the president's remarks last week, he said if this works, that is the big question with iran. it might not work. and, you know, from what i read and people say, this whole thing about being able to do surprise inspections is porous. they could have three weeks notice to do -- >> so you think people really believe they can build a nuclear weapon without us knowing it? >> yes, absolutely. >> i don't believe that.
11:45 pm
>> not for awhile. one of the -- >> our technology is pretty darn good. >> and the proponents all along is said one advantage is it would prolong the day when this is the true moment, absolute moment threat. >> from the bottom line, if we don't do the deal, what's the alternative? will we do? go to war? >> if you bomb the hell out of them, every bomb, every bunker busted, blow them up, it's three years back at it again. at least this is ten years, none of it is more than a compromise. there is a lobbying by proisraeli groups on both sides of the deal. most are locked up with one another against the agreement including leadership. the fight is for democrats to avoid the embarrassment of having to over ride legislation. john says there is a lot of people that's proisrael and i
11:46 pm
think we ought to listen to our friends, i don't know what that means but the modern u.s. base cautions i think the government of israel will continue and ramp up efforts to kill the agreement. jonathan, this is one of the, some of these statements that come out of israel like this, they are not teaching us. we know the situation but they do face a different situation than we do. iran is not going to bomb us into the ground but they could do that if they were looney enough to israel. >> israel is in a very, very different place and i think -- >> it's called close. >> close. >> i think sometimes proisrael folks in the united states would fight to the last israeli. you know, i think sometimes the folks here tend to be more hawkish. this vote will be very interesting. i expect the president will get what he wants and get this deal done in the end but most democrats don't want to vote for it. a very liberal democrat in the
11:47 pm
house who will vote for it told me it would be much easier to vote. >> the ones up for reelection next year will be least likely. they will do a lot of corralling. >> you mean fundraising? >> no, corralling is when you hold the men and women of the senate in the floor and don't let them leave until you're sure you don't need the votes. >> up next, we take a trip in the "hardball" time machine to 2016 or 2017 when president donald trump is president in the office. this is "hardball" a place for politics. look at that beautiful hotel on tripadvisor. wait. why leave the site? don't you know the tripadvisor you've always trusted for reviews, book! now chec over 200 websites to find the best price? book...book...book! over 200 sites checked to find the best price. so don't just visit tripadvisor... book at tripadvisor.

this past weekend we saw the largest crowd yet, more than 11,000 people turned out for bernie sanders. trump, that's trump's recent impressive turnout. right there. nearly 10,000 came to see him speak in madison, wisconsin. much cooler place, actually. last week a fox news poll showed sanders in second place among democrats nationally to hillary clinton but hillary clinton still leads the nomination fight by 40 points. interesting, sanders is getting big crowds and trump is getting numbers in the polls. we'll be right back.

we're back with the roundtable. ann, jonathan and michelle. i want you to pause for a moment and close your eyes. don't close your eyes. it's television. the 2016 election is over and donald trump has won. we want to imagine how this would change everything, not just the country but say this town of washington d.c. we know that mr. trump is a brand. there could be new landscaping at the white house. air force one could sport a new logo and his fondness for helicopters, marine one would be personalized for the donald. remember trump airlines? >> the white house would be a skyscraper, first of all. >> huge. >> trump tower, the gift shop. the donald trump ties in the gift shop in the white house and all over washington.
11:53 pm
>> he would have no cabinet because he would fire them all. >> i want to see his first cabinet meeting. go around the table and say what do you do here? what do you do for me? what's your job. >> donald trump doesn't talk as we know like other republican or any other candidates on issues of god and faith which could be another twist washington would have to get used to in a trump president. here's trump. the real trump right now this weekend. have you ever asked god for forgiveness? i'm not sure i have. i just try to do a better job from there. i don't bring god into that picture. i don't. when we go to church and when i drink my wine which is the only wine i drink and have my cracker, that's a form of asking for forgiveness. i do that as often as possible because i feel cleansed.
11:54 pm
what does that mean? >> it was pretty strong there. the little cracker. he acted like he had just gone by a food truck and picked up a cracker and picked up wine. a little taste. and his view of religion and significance of that wine whatever your faith, it's pretty strong. he didn't seem to have the gift of understanding when he was talking about that. >> it's as if it's above his pay level. i imagine if he can't answer that question, what is he going to look like if he makes it to the floor of the debate when he's asked whether he's pro-choice or pro-life. >> never asking god for help is another way of saying i'll never take back anything i ever say which is the problem he's in. i'll have more on that in a moment and i'll go after him in a moment. thank you very much. i don't know what that new 74
11:55 pm
thing is. we'll get back to that. one title per guest. we'll be right back.

kids are expensive. so i'm always looking to get more for my money. that's why i switched from u-verse to xfinity. they have the most free on demand tv shows and movies on all my devices. it's perfect for me because my kids are costing me a fortune. i'm going to cabo! [ music plays ] don't settle for u-verse. xfinity is perfect for people who want more entertainment for their money. let me finish with mr. donald trump and people he wants to vote for him. i have a feeling the guys impressed with the hotel big shot look up to his buildings, success, his ability to say what he wants. i have a further feeling there's as patriot group who have special respect for the men who do fighting for this country, the ones that go into the jungle
11:59 pm
because that's where the enemy is and who fly planes over hostile territory and take tough missions because they believe their country's future is at stake. every one of these guys and women know the risk they take, odds that many times run against them getting through it. they know good men. they knew them who never made it home and never will and why i have to ask myself would any reasonable person want to keep a doubt out there about his total respect for such warriors. as i said at the beginning, we don't honor those who come marching home, we honor the gi who gets wounded and doesn't come home and we walk slowly and speak in whispers at arlington cemetery and honor memorial day and why they were determined to get p.o.w.s home from vietnam. words will not change the duelling facts and dueling tests of courage and patriotism or the fact that who in this case deserves to talk and who deserves to simply sit down and be quiet.
12:00 am
that's "hardball" for now. thanks for being with us. "all in with chris hayes" starts right now. >> tonight on "all in" -- >> he's a war hero because he was captured. i like those that weren't captured. >> there are certain things you don't do. >> tonight why the rnc rebuke of donald trump could set a dangerous precedence. plus, the unbelievable things the so-called grown-up candidates are saying as we gawk at the donald. why black lives matter activists are protesting democratic candidates. >> say that black lives matter! >> and the uber wars rage across america. >> at the end of the day it's about providing folks a choice.
