adam, thank you very much. that's all for this evening and now rachel maddow. good evening to you. rachel has the night off. we're going to talk about a presidential candidate that's not donald trump. we will talk about one that has nothing to do with the fact but the fact that it has everything to do with him because everything in politics has something to do with donald trump. here is what i mean. today the republican governor of ohio threw his hat in the ring and running for president. he made the announcement in front of a few thousand people in the ohio state university. >> the testing is what makes you stronger and the challenges is what makes you better. i live through them and become

stronger for them and america is stronger for them. here is how we have done it, by staying together. not by dividing each other but staying together with the eyes on the horizon about the future. >> i am here to ask you for your prayers, for your support and efforts because i have decided to run for president of the united states. >> it's taking the band of brothers that i work with everyday, and we're going take the lessons of the heart land and straighten out washington dc and fix our country.

>> there are a lot of candidates this year. all 16 of them and among all of them he does stand out. at least on paper. he is the two term governor and maybe the key swing state of ohio. it's a state that's going in every president election since 1960. they're going to win back the white house -- he ran for re-election and won by a land slide. that imploded and won it by 31 points. the approval rating sits at 61 percent. another poll shows that 72 percent feel that things are going in the right direction in the state. now, think for a second here

about another candidate and think of chris christie and all of those polls showing how deeply unpoplar he is getting. john does not have that problem at all. ohio could be the state to decide who the next president is. republicans say that they can win over the swing voters that are not too nuts these days and for example he is one of the few governor's that expanded medicaid under the affordable care act. many do not like this, but it could be very attractive in a general election. that's if he can get to a general election. look at how he talks about the issue. a group of conservatives confront him and said this to them. he said when you die and get to the meeting with st. peter, he is probably not going ask you much of what you did about keeping the government small.

he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. you better have a good answer. you not hear them talking and especially when it comes to the key components and then the issue of immigration. remember they got clobbered back in 2012. how many voters of every strip have been turned off by the native noise that's from the republican party. here is what he had to say about the immigration today. he said that i don't believe that we should be dementia niezing people. he sounds like a different republican that you're used to hearing. here is the thing, you can say that because of this and because he says and does things like this he is doomed no matter what. it will not go for someone that talks like this and does things like this. maybe that's true. maybe that is. he said that he is the republican that democrats least want to run against. there's probably something to that argument.

he can tell republicans if you're sick of losing and don't want to lose the third straight election. if you don't want to lose the poplar vote for the sixth time in the last seven. if you do not want all of that to keep on happening, then get on board with me. he can make the argument and has something to back it up. here is the real problem. he is getting in this race late. later than everybody else. he is the 16th candidate in the race, and it's the end of july. look at the calendar for a second year. he faces an immediate and crucial test. it's a critical test that end the candidacy before he gets going if he fails it. that has to do with this date, august 6th. that's the date of the first republican debate. millions are going to be watching it. it's taking place in cleveland. there's a rule for this debate. only ten candidates are going to

be allowed to take part. the top ten in the archg of the most five resent polls before the debate. right now if that debate were being held tonight right now. john kasich would not make it. all of the candidates in his home stake and he would be nowhere in sight. it would be a huge blow to the credibility as a serious candidate. john really needs to get in that debate. now he has just two weeks to bump up his poll numbers and to make that top ten. that's the challenge. maybe the top ten or face the humiliation and be denied a ticket in his own backyard. squl he got in the race today and the kind of bump that john kasich needs right now. this is where you know who comes in.

while he did everything that he possibly could for the attention today, it's not john kasich and it's not his campaign announcement that the political world is talking about. instead, it's this. >> he is registered sir ser owe in the pole. he is doing so poorly and put glasses on so people would think that he is smart. it just does not work. people can see through the glasses they just run and run

and run. you wind them up and they run for office. they don't do anything when they get there. i know them better than anything. they say that they did not like the way that the little -- i'm a little loud or too strong. they don't like it. and then i watch this idiot graham on television today and he calls me a jack a [ bleep ]. every time that i turn on i have a guy hitting me hard. the reason that they're hitting me is that when you register zero on the poll, they have nothing to lose. graham calls me a jack ass. he does not seem like a bright

guy. he actually probably seems to me not as bright as rick perry. it's like owning a newspaper without the lawsuits. it's incredible. so i treated that rick perry should have to have an iq test before getting on the debate stage. people said that was tough. today i get called a jack ass and then i said to myself didn't this guy just call me like four years ago? yes. he called me three or four years ago. i did not know who he is. he said this is senator graham. i was wondering if it's possible for you to call fox because until i ran i had that little thing of fox and friends was so great.

of course he wanted the know if he wanted to see me for some campaign contributions. so lindsey graham says to me please please please whatever you can do. what is this guy a beg er. he is like begging me to help him with fox and friends. i said okay, i will mention my name. >> he gave me his number and i found the card. i wrote the number down. i don't know if it's the right number, let's try. 202. i don't know maybe it's three or four years ago, maybe it's an old number.

>> donald trump in lindsey grahams home state and giving it out to hundreds of people that are in the rally and to anyone that's watching it or seeing it on line, that's happened and taking up a good chunk of the news today. today was the day that donald trump went after the register after it wrote an editorial and trump said that the paper will do anything for a headline in this poorly written nonendorsement and got him some needed ink. it's hard for this not to be news. it's just a bazaar spectacle. here you have a major national figure. it's a guy running for president and now a guy leading in the polls for president. that guy standing up and giving out the phone number of one of his opponents. it's the kind of thing that gets

notice and buzz and drowns out someone and detailing the reasons that he wants to run. everyday something like this is happening and keeps on happening. there's a new donald trump headline and a new controversy and a new spectacle and a new poll leading and the comments about t john mccain being a war hero. it's everything and anything. he has grabbed control of the news cycle for weeks now and he is drawning out everyone else. the mistakes and all of this are very real. when ever you think about it, he is a serious and credible candidate. two decades in congress and two terms of a major state. he has shone the ability to appeal across parting lines. he is promising to talk about issues in a way that many of the others don't. it won't matter.

none of it will matter at all if no one hears them. if he is not on the debate stage two weeks from now, no one is going to hear him. it could go on the vine. so donald trump is more than a side show right now. it very well maybe that we're watching him right now destroy someone else's candidacy. someone that could be a republican of winning in 2016. joining us now is the chief correspondent and a political writer of the new york times. thanks for joining me tonight. this trump talk and there was a lot of talk over the weekend that he finally crossed the line and here he is a few days later. i know that's subject to change but there's no immediate price that he is paying for this. the laws of politics say that someone making it up cannot last for ever and how long can it last. >> i think that it will last longer. we saw in "the cycle" a sere

rees climb up and then fall down. and i think that's highly unlikely to happen to donald trump. when it does, the loose vote that's going to be out in the field is going to be available to people perhaps john and i think everybody has got to figure out what they're going to do to buy their time and then be prepared when he falls. now you're right when he say that is he has to debate. he needs ton on the stage. that's not the last debate. there have to be others. we're going to have one in october and in boulder, colorado. john is going to have other opportunities. i don't think that it's make or break. he does have time to make up and start to hustle. >> when you think back to the races that you have covered or

just know about, have you seen a candidate quiet like this before? they have been candidates that said things. what i think that might be different is somebody who when he is called on it by so many people in the party is completely unapologetic and completely defiant and does not miss a beat and throws it in their face. >> i think that's right. i think the other combination is the rhetoric from trump that he is leading in the polls. herman cain prospered for a while and talked about a tax plan. he is not talking about policy, but going after people. john mccain and rick perry and jeb bush and all sorts of people yet he has not come down. there was a new poll out today suggesting that the bloom had not come off that. i they it's going to.

it has not yet. it's a bazaar spectacle. that was a comedy routine. there was something funny about it unless your john kasich. >> i wonder if it says something listening to that. what i am noticing is that he is ridiculing them and we have the polls up that show the approval rating that's at six percent and washington held in a low regard. there's a detour that you you do not do what trump is doing and then you can not survive in politics and do what he does. he is probably connecting with a lot of poplar disgust out there with the political system. >> there's no doubt about it. every single candidate is dumping on washington. he is doing it for personally.

the audience is listening to him loathe washington. they do not see it as he is insulting, no not at all. the other thing that i think about is the nightmare who has been embraced by the party who has been solicited by the parties and then turning on them as in the cell phone thing. i see the endorsement of donald trump. this is something that the republican party has been apart of. it's something that the party has some ownership on. now they're reaping it. >> yeah, you have to order them and did i just call them or leave a voice mail. >> yeah. >> so maybe more to come. chief washington and thanks for the time tonight. appreciate it.

with donald trump in the race and taking up the oxygen is how you can get any attention for yourself. how do you drag the spotlight away from the donald and put it on yourself? how about a wood chipper. the history of a political kind of a stunt is next.

so say that you're running in a retubally can district. you're going to lose, but going to go for it any way. how do you set yourself apart and what can you do to get some of that attention? well we have one option for you here. check this out. >> they call me a long shoot. they say that i cannot win in this district. what happens to an elephant that stands around doing nothing for too long. [ gunshot ] . >> so what do you do, you shoot

in the middle of the desert. that campaign did not bring about the desired affect. after that the gun control group founded by the arizona put out a statement calling the ad irresponsible and offensive. this kind of miss guided on both sides furthers the lack of balance on guns. they decided to take the ad down. showing off the tell er ship. this is actually a long standing tradition across the political spectrum and the newest example is a doozy.

fanlly came together and i threw it on youtube and it's thanks to msnbc and the people that hate it the most is the ones that help it go viral. >> you may not remember her now, but for a brief moment during the 2010 run for congress this arizona republican was kind of everywhere and thanks to an add that triggered liberal outrage.

>> raided 100 percent by the nra conservative is always right on target. >> i am pamela, and i approve this message. >> now, pamela did not win the race for congress and lost to ben quail. he beat pamela in that race in 2010, but pamela won a place in the hall of fame for politicians shooting at stuff. that same year in 2010 john man son of west virginia had better luck with showed up shooting up a copy of the trade bill. >> i will take on washington and the administration to get the government off our backs. i will sue them and take dead i am at the cap and trade bill because it's bad for west

virginia. >> he made it to the senate in 2010 and won the election. who knows how much he owes. voters remember and the second that s that candidates repeat them. in the kentucky senate race allison made a pitch for herself as a skeet shooter. did not work for her. johnny earnst went to the firing range and won her seat. now here is something that caught people's attention. this is running for the senate in alaska. >> millions of dollars of negative ads are flooding into alaska. pretty soon you're going want to do this to your tv. >> he probably need aid new tv after that, but he is also now a united states senator.

also last year in montana a republican went after some bigger prey. >> i am malt and this is how i look from a government drone, and this is what i think about it. >> candidates shoot targets, clay, tvs, affordable care act, will brook of alabama shot the affordable care about a half a dozen times and it did not work. ron shot the affordable care act out of the sky and lost his. democrats shoot stuff too. republicans shoot stuff too. it's one way that they try to make themselves stand out. in today a new twist on the genre. a candidate that does not shoot stuff at all. he is running for president and the poll numbers have been mid-ing. so in fact that the campaign is

quit down in the press and began to ask everything that happened to him. it turns out that he is off practicing with a chain saw. >> i am rand paul and i am trying to kill the tax code. all pages of it. >> the poll has three extended play videos and you can burn the tax code with it if you want or put it through a wood chipper. it's your choice. he put them on line and the main video has about 14,000 views and one of the extended play methods

this evening in marietta, georgia they gathered to remember skipper wells. that memorial was held at wells old high school. georgia actually lost two men in last week's shootings. a sailor was also killed and we learned that randall smith will not be buried in georgia but in the state where he died. another victim staff sergeant

david wyat will be buried in chattanooga. they want him to be buried for the love of the chattanooga community and the out loving support during the time. president obama ordered the g. flags to be flown at half staff and suffered his own eulogy and taking time to remember each one of them. >> back in massachusetts tom sullivan cheered for his boston teams and battle and sully was everything that a marine should be. two tours in iraq he earned a combat heroism and when he was warned that a gunman was there in chattanooga, he ran in so that others could live. today we echo the word of his community and the sullivan was our hero, and he will not be

forgotten. thank you for protecting us. [ applause ] >> growing up in georgia skill wells was a true leader and devoted to god and his friends. quick to lend a hand or put you on his prayer list. during the hometowns fourth of july parade, he was so proud that he went in his dress uniform. just 21 years old. a year out of boot camp. always smiling even during the hardest drills. friends say that skip is the kind of kid that you want on the team. we're grateful that lance corporal wells was on our team. as an eagle scout david was the first on top and found the

calling in the marines and lead with courage in afghanistan and iraq and with compassion as a mentor to comrades with post traumatic stress. he was a gentlemen and a gentle man. nobody knew that better than his wife laura and their two children. today we see as they did why staff sergeant david was the kind that this country needs more of. back home carson was the embodiment and spirit of wisconsin population 1,300. loved country music, fish, hunt and football and loved the marines and showing up at his high school in his dressed blues. he served in afghanistan. he did the best that he could.

today we're stronger because he saw the best in him. in his hometown in ohio randall smith is remembered as the high school baseball star with the fierce pitch. he was a fun and outgoing guy. the guy you that you just want to be around. his buddies in the navy knew it. he just reenlisted and his family knew it too. his wife angie that he liked to call the most beautiful woman in the world and his young daughters that he called his little princesses, today we join the people in ohio including dfw post 587 with five flag flying with smith.

>> that's president obama today remembering the victims at the chattanooga navel reserve center. now in chattanooga a spontaneous memorial has been growing. people have been leaving flags, balloons and flowers outside of the other shooting site and the wake of the attack and some are calling for the recruit ers to be armed in going forward and something that's prohibited across the country armed volunteers have been showing up to stand guard outside of the recruitment centers. meanwhile investigators try to figure out the why and the how of how they happened in the first place. officials say that they're focussing on the mental abuse and a resent trip to jordan that we learn that had the shooters urngle has been detained for days as part of the investigation.

joining us now is -- take us to and about the gunman here and here anything else new about this a head of time. >> yes, good evening. it's certainly a two prong investigation happening on two continents. he was living there for five years. he was telling us that the gunman's uncle was taken into custody a couple of days ago. he was questioned by the officials and he continued to remained in custody tonight. our law enforcement officials question us and concerned about the potential role when the suspect and gunman was living there and of course as you know he spent about seven months there earlier this year and returning this month to the

states and we were told that while mohammad youssuf abdulazeez he was living with the uncle, there were periods that he came and went freely and the movements were not watched. that's part of the investigation that's happening over in georgia. here in the state side fbi officials will only say that there's no motive for the shooting. they have not linked the suspect to any type of terror group or organization. so far that's what the investigation shows. they have spoken to us and said that he suffered from mental health issues and substance abuse problems. he said that since the age of 12 or 13 he was diagnosed with being depressed. he had highs and lows in his life. then we go back to tuesday. the shooting as you know happened on a thursday. the suspect has the last interaction and he argued with them and had recently gotten a dui.

they say that's the last time that the parents and gunman were in contact. he then apparently rented a mustang and spent the day driving around town with friends. it was the beginning of a three day drug bend. they were speeding through the town going 80 to 100 miles as early as 3:00 in the morning and then on thursday the shooting rampage and just a few minutes later just a few miles away and the five service members killed. >> yeah, and they were reports of him downloading recording from al qaeda. what do you know about that? >> reporter: the web searches that he had done he had downloaded some audio recordings from a recruit officer and he was listening to them.

he may have downloaded an audio cd and certainly part of the investigation. that raises the red flags and that's all part of the bigger investigation. what o officials are telling us is that they same to believe that he was listening or interested in some type of jihad movement. they say that it's still early and there could be twist and turn in this investigation. >> okay. thank you for the time tonight. >> sure thing. >> all right. lots more to come tonight and a surprise guest that's going to be on the show tomorrow night. i think that you need the set the dvr. i will give you the details ahead.

this was the first and only photo of the whole earth ever taken by a human. it's one of the most widely reproduced photos in history. because it's in the public domain, because no one can make a copy right claim on this toe photo it is on t-shirts, ties, posters, bumper stickers, everything you can imagine since it was taken. now today, 43 years later, after that photo was first taken, we have a new, updated version of it. courtesy of the deep space climate observatory planet known as the discovery. the discover satellite is 1 million miles from earth and responsible for monitoring and alerting the u.s. to changes in solar winds which was a pet project of vice president al gore. brought back to life by the air force discovery is up there now

and just sent back this. this is the first photo from the satellite. it shows a full view of north and central america at solar noon. no shadows a dead-on shot of the planet. this week we have fresh images, not only of earth but pictures of pluto and its moon unclose and from afar. today msnbc learned of this critical space and time discovery. >> 57 years ago today, i did my first report for nbc news. >> no. >> i have been with them ever since. >> that's right. legendary nbc news correspondent jay barbree did his first report 57 years ago today. he has covered every single manned space mission in the united states. every one of them. 135 space shuttle launches. he has been there every time to
