detained. let's turn to business and wall street where earnings remain the focus. dow down 181 points. it's the biggest drop in nearly two weeks. apple reported a 38% rise in quarterly profit after the bell. that didn't stop the shares from falling 7% in afterhours trading. we are joined from london. big merger news. what's the latest on that front? >> yeah absolutely. as you point out, i think the markets feel a little tender after the mauling they've had around these technology stocks that are put in earnings that are not impressed. maybe there will be comforted with the fact regulators are finally green lighted this at&t deal. $48.5 billion is how much the giant will pay for directv.

it's taken 14 months for them to say this is acceptable. looks like the regulators will let this deal take place. ultimately it will meet a joint company with 26 million paid tv users. it will be quite a bigs company. regulators say as long as at&t obliges on some conditions they can't see problem for the deal to go through. obviously these conditions relate to access that other businesses will get in term the temperaturesthes of online television services. at&t making commitment it will not make life difficult for them. that story seems to be better for shareholders this will have a few scratching their heads. citi coming out saying they're going to offer refunds, at least $700 million worth of refunds to credit card users.

the company has acknowledged that maybe some of the advertising and marketing associated with these cards was misleading and may have hit some of those card holders in the pocket. they have said that they agree to start compensating card holders. if you're a citibank credit card holder expect a call or hopefully money back if you have been misled in the past through marketing provided by this company. hopefully that will be a bit of brighter news for some citibank credit card holders. back to you. >> a bit of a financial milestone here. the overhaul bill turned five this week. one of the most e significant mandates is just now taking in effect. what's that all about? >> yeah let's not get stuck in the detail here. effectively the vvolcker rule

johnson is suspending the practice. >> at my desk top at work i was via internet accessing my personal g mail account so i could see who was sending me stuff on g mail my personal account. not to be confused with my dhs e-mail i use all the time. there are -- i received a waiver from our chief information officer to do that so to the rules. there are some security risks that have been raised concerning that. i'm suspending that. probably should have done it sooner. when i read the story i said oops, this is not a good practice and should discontinue it. >> johnson went on to say moving forward, he'll use his iphone to access the g mail account at work. still ahead on "way too early." the death of an activist in a texas jail.

we're getting our first look at key video in the death of 28-year-old activist sandra bland, found dead in a texas jail cell three days after being arrested in a traffic stop. the manner of death is ruled suicide, but the district attorney says they're handling the case as a homicide investigation as is procedure.
